President Buhari has expressed sadness at the level of poverty in Nigeria.

Speaking when he hosted Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Ministers, Service Chiefs, Heads of Security Agencies and Chief Executives of Federal Government Agencies and Institutions to a breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa, Abuja last night, President Buhari said what upsets him when he drives around the country is the level of poverty he sees.

“When I drive around the country what upset me very much is the status of our poor people in this country. You see young people, the so-called Almajiris with tore dresses, with plastic bowl. They are looking basically for what to eat. The question of education (to them) is a luxury. I think Nigerian elite we are all failing because I think we should have a programme that will at least guarantee some basic education for our people no matter how poor they are.

Crises between two rival group in Anyigba Community, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State on Sunday led to the death of one Ismaila Yakubu Agba, a youth leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the locality.

Igbere TV reports that Agba was shot dead during a gun duel that lasted for several hours.

Although, as at the time of filing this report, the remote cause of the exchange of gun fire could not be ascertained, Igbere TV, however, gathered that the unidentified gun men started shooting around 10am, bringing the town’s activities to a halt.

According to our source, the APC youth leader until his death, was the head of the Kogi East district Cashew Produce of the Revenue Drive Department of Kogi State Government.

He was also the Chairman of Anyigba-Lagos loading point in the town.

The source stated that the militant group, suspected to be from rival leading political parties in the town stormed the enclave of the other party which turned out to be a ‘free for all’, leading to many receiving bullet wounds of various degree.

Igbere TV gathered that the crises may not be unconnected with the November 2 governorship election where both side are said to be doing rehearsal in the battle for supremacy.

When contacted, the Kogi State Police Public Relation Officer, DCP Williams Aya confirmed the incident, saying that only one person (Ismaila Yakubu Agba) died, with one Alhassan Idoko sustaining injury from the attack.

Aya, however, said it was not a political attack but a case of a culpable homicide perpetrated by unidentified gunmen, “which the command is already on their trail.”

Governor Yahaya Bello has declared his support for the endorsement of Sen. Ahmad Lawan and Hon Femi Gbajabiamila as the heads of the 9th Senate and House of Representatives respectively.

The Governor who made this known while on a courtesy visit to the National Leader of the party, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the decision of the party remains his position on the next National Assembly leadership.

He said both of them are experienced and qualified to lead the Upper and the Lower Chambers.

“You are our National Leader and we are your children. You have set the agenda and we shall ensure we make it a reality.

“I supported Hon Gbajabiamila in 2015 but it was unfortunate that we lost out. This time around, we shall make sure the decision of the party prevails by electing the two of them to work with Mr President to move the nation forward.

LARGE proportion of the N7.9 trillion pieces of naira notes in circulation are dirty, mutilated, unfit for Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and over-the-counter payments, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said.

A statement by CBN’s Deputy Governor, Operations Folashodun Shonubi and Director, Currency Operations Department Mrs. Pricilla Eleje spoke of plans to withdraw such notes from circulation.

The officials said the bank had the obligation of providing adequate supply of clean banknotes to facilitate seamless payment and settlement of transactions by the public, government and banks.

CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele is “due in Lagos tomorrow to launch “The clean note policy and banknote fitness guidelines”.

The CBN described the measure as the first step in its bid to address the sorry state of the notes in circulation and create a new culture for better handling of the currency.

The clean note policy provides a uniform standard for the circulation of only clean and fit banknotes; while the banknote fitness guidelines provide the industry with clear and acceptable criteria for determining the quality of notes in circulation.

The policy guidelines, the regulator said, were developed after extensive collaboration and engagements with key industry stakeholders under the auspices of the Nigerian Cash Management Scheme, a Bankers’ Committee initiative.

The plan will ensure that unfit, dirty, mutilated and counterfeit banknotes are not in circulation. This is pursuant to Sections 18, 20 & 21 of the CBN Act 2007 which prohibits the counterfeiting, sale and abuse of the naira.

The statement said: “The CBN cannot achieve these objectives without the collaboration of deposit money banks(DMBs), merchant banks, microfinance banks, government agencies, Cash-in- Transit ( CIT), Cash Processing Companies (CPCs), Market Associations, merchants/retailers, chambers of commerce and industry, security agencies, currency Management equipment manufacturers , bank customers and the general public.”

It explained that over the years, the growth in economic activities and the upsurge in population had necessitated the rise in the volume of banknotes in circulation.

The CBN said: “In view of technological advances, the CBN, like other central banks has introduced various forms of electronic payment systems for effective and efficient settlement of transactions and to reduce the volume of cash usage with its attendant cost implications.

“Despite the prevalence of other forms of payment, cash remains ‘king’ in our day to day economic transactions. As such, people still prefer to use cash in making payments especially where there are no digital payment platforms.

The Federal Government will take another fresh external loan of $247.3m for the development of infrastructure, despite the country’s rising debt profile.

The Federal Executive Council made the approval at its sitting in Abuja on Wednesday.

It came just days after the International Monetary Fund raised eyebrows over Nigeria’s current N24.38tn debt, advising the country to take borrowing slowly.

Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting rose, the Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, gave a breakdown of the fresh loan.

She stated that $150m would come from the African Development Bank, to be spent specifically on rural electrification projects; $50m from Africa Grow Together Fund for other electrification projects; and $20m from French Development Agency, which would be loaned to the  Lagos State Government.

Lagos plans to use the $20m to build new roads and rehabilitate existing ones.

Another $27.3m IADE facility was approved as part of the ‘North Core Dorsal Regional Transmission Project.’

This will be part of the West Africa Power Pool projects with a total loan requirement of $640m.

The minister explained that the projects were to connect Nigeria, Niger, Benin Republic, Togo, and Burkina Faso “with a high voltage 330 kilowatts transmission line, to facilitate energy trade among participant countries.”

The minister, who gave more details on the approvals by FEC, said, “Council approved three memos for Ministry of Finance. First, it approved a $150m loan facility from AfDB and $50m loan from African Grow Together Fund to finance the Nigerian electrification project. The project is a nationwide initiative to be implemented by the rural electrification agency.

“The project aligns with the strategy of the Federal Government on electrification of rural communities. The project has four components: First is solar hybrid mini-grid for rural economic development, the second is productive appliances equipment for up-grid communities, and the third is energising education while the fourth component is institutional capacity building.

“The impact of the project when fully implemented, about 500,000 people will be able to have access to electricity for about 105,000 households. The maximum power that will be generated will be 76.5 megawatts installed generating capacity part of which is 68,000 megawatts of solar.

“Eight universities will benefit from this scheme and about 20,000 small, micro, medium enterprises across different communities in the nation.

“The second approval is the North Core Dorsal Regional Transmission Project. This is a project that is part of the pipeline for the West Africa power pool priority projects. The intention is for the creation of a regional power pool in the region of West Africa. The pool project aims to connect Nigeria, Niger, Benin Republic, Togo, and Burkina Faso with a high voltage 330 kilowatts transmission line, to facilitate energy trade among participants.

“The project is in the total sum of $640m, out of which each of the four countries involved has a component. Nigeria has the smallest component in this pact, which is a total loan of $27.3 m IADE facility, a concessionary loan. This is a loan that the four countries are taking together; the other three countries have concluded theirs. So, this is one of the final stages for Nigeria to conclude its process.”

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has employed the services of a US lobbyist firm to advance his challenge of the outcome of the February 23 presidential polls.

President Muhammadu Buhari defeated Atiku with over three million votes in the election but he rejected the results and filed a suit before the presidential election petition tribunal challenging the process which he said was “heavily militarised” and results manipulated.

According to a report by Centre for Responsive Politics (CRP), Bruce Fein, former justice department official and his firm Fein & DelValle PLLC registered on March 24 as foreign agents on behalf of PDP and Atiku.

The firm is expected to “encourage Congress and the executive to forbear from a final declaration and recognition of Nigeria’s February 23, 209 presidential election until outstanding legal challenges to the initial government of Nigeria assertion that incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari was the victor are impartially and independently resolved by the supreme court of Nigeria without political or military influence, intimidation or manipulation”.

Atiku is seeking to be recognised by the US as the president of Nigeria, and halt the final declaration of Buhari as the president until the matter is ruled upon by the supreme court.

According to the firm, parts of its services on behalf of Atiku includes to “Meet and consult with members of Congress and staff in an effort to pass House and Senate resolution(s) to forebear from a final declaration and recognition of a winner of the 2019 Federal Republic of Nigeria presidential election pending legal challenges to the initial assertion that incumbent President Buhari was the victor are impartially and independently resolved by the Nigerian judiciary in accordance with the rule of law and due process, free from military or political influence

“Draft articles and op-ed pieces to spotlight the issues in Nigeria post-2019 presidential election arid to promote the rule of law and due process in resolving electoral disputes in Nigeria.

“Make television and other media appearances to engage in public advocacy discussions of these issues.”

In a letter replying Atiku’s request for their services, the firm said a “Nigerian barrister and trusted confidant of Your-Excellency Dr. Lloyd Ukwu, will assist in the operations of the U.S. Situation Room”

It added that Fein will be paid $30,000 over a 90-day contract.

The firm said its lobbying effort will demonstrate that an Atiku presidency is “the will of the People.”

It added that its services will convince the United States that an “Abubakar presidency” will open a fresh and new chapter in Nigerian politics, while “highlight the declining rule of law, democracy and clue process in Nigeria under the APC and the current administration.”

It said it will establish that if Atiku “is denied victory”, problems like genocide, poverty, corruption and strife will “undoubtedly continue.”

Nigerians were among the world’s hungriest people in 2018 according to a new joint United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU) report published on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.

The 2019 Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) from the UN which disclosed that Nigerians were among world’s hungriest people in 2018, also disclosed that the number of people unable to meet their daily food needs without humanitarian assistance has been rising for several years.

While a short-term outlook of food insecurity for 2019 also showed that Nigeria will remain among the world’s most severe cases of food crises ( as the other seven currently affected), data pooled from 15 agencies in the international humanitarian and development community showed that Nigeria, northern Nigeria to be specific, was one of the eight countries that housed two-thirds of the 113 million people who faced acute hunger across the globe in 2018.


“The worst food crises in 2018, in order of severity, were: Yemen, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Sudan, South Sudan and northern Nigeria.


“These eight countries accounted for two thirds of the total number of people facing acute food insecurity – amounting to nearly 72 million people,” the report read.

“Large segments of populations in most of these countries risk falling into Emergency (IPC/CH Phase 4) levels of acute food insecurity. At the peak of the lean season, three million were acutely food insecure in the three north-eastern states affected by the Boko Haram insurgency where protracted conflict and mass displacement disrupted agriculture, trade, markets and livelihoods, and pushed up food prices,”the report added.

Food crises across the world in 2018 were primarily driven by persistent instability in conflict-ridden regions and adverse climate events, and it was further gathered that it affected 16 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 5.3 million people estimated to be “in crisis or worse”. Worst-hit were identified to be three million people resident in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, northeastern states that have bore the brunt of a 10-year insurgency by terrorist group, Boko Haram.
