When you take consciousness to mean awareness, I think is seriously flawed, when you relate it to the stone case. Reacting to the environment cannot be taken as being conscious of the environment. Inanimate (stone in this case) does not responds stimulus but can react with other objects. Remember this "Every object continues in its state of rest or linear motion on a straight line except when it is being acted upon by external force". Take inanimate objects as zombies who cannot make but could be made or could be made to make. Alfa Seltzer: We don't know. We are almost sure that a stone has no sensation but we can never be 100% sure. What we know however is that it reacts to its environment. And for me, that is being conscious of its environment because I don't see how you can react to something you are not conscious of. |
Can you apply this to inanimate objects? If you hit a stone, does it react as a result of sensation or as a result of the impact of the force? Alfa Seltzer: Yes. Everything is conscious. The problem we are having is that we are defining their own consciousness based on our own. We don't know how they express their consciousness but it is there. How do I know? Because everything reacts to something. I am reacting to this thread because I am conscious of it. My typing on my keyboard is my own way of expressing this consciousness. A stone hit with a hammer reacts. A piece of paper but inside a bottle reacts; may even change colour to express this reaction. This is what I call being conscious. It is very different from being alive or being able to think. |

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have given the Federal Government certain conditions to be met before the union could call off its four-month old strike.ASUU Gives New Conditions To Federal Government Part of this condition, Saturday PUNCH learnt, is that all federal parastatals in charge of fund, labour, and education must sign the agreement purportedly reached between its leadership and the Federal Government on Tuesday. A prominent member of the union, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on behalf of the union, told Saturday PUNCH that doing this would give the association the confidence that “the Federal Government knows what it is doing when it signed the agreement.” He said, “I must tell you that our mandate remains. The only mandate we have is that 2009 agreement must be met. We have not reached any agreement with the Federal Government. “Since the Federal Government wants to be releasing N220bn every year for five years, then all monetary and regulatory agencies must sign. The Central Bank of Nigeria, Ministries of Finance and Labour, National Assembly, Office of the Presidency, National Universities Commission, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Trade Union Congress and our umbrella body, the Nigeria Labour Congress, must sign with consequences stated. “The reason we will ensure this is that we don’t want argument tomorrow that the agreement was entered in error or that they don’t know the implication of signing the agreement. If possible, documents that will provide for automatic deduction of the agreed money at a particular/agreed date must be provided.” The leadership of the union had engaged in a 13-hour marathon meeting with government delegation led by President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja between Monday and Tuesday. Though it was generally perceived that both ASUU and the Federal Government achieved breakthrough in negotiation for the first time after the lengthy meeting with the President, Saturday PUNCH learnt that the lecturers might not be in a hurry to go back to class. Another source close to ASUU who was also part of the marathon meeting with the President in Abuja, said there was nothing new in what the President promised members of the union. According to him, government had always failed in implementing agreements reached with ASUU. He said, “Truly the President sat down for more than 13 hours with us. He told us that we were not leaving the venue until the issues were resolved. The Federal Government also promised to inject funds into the system, but a promissory note is not enough. “Where would the money come from? There is no assurance that government will provide money especially with the mop-up policy in place that ensures that unspent money is refunded to government’s coffers at the end of every year.’’ Asked when the lecturers would call off the strike, he said, “I doubt if the strike is ending soon. The problem is with the Finance Minister. Where is government getting N1trn from? A government that could not implement agreement between 2009 and 2013, what is the guarantee that they would honour this agreement. “It is all politics. We are still awaiting directives from our branches. We have told them the outcome of the meeting with the President but we are waiting for them to tell us what they think of government’s proposal. “Imagine the Minister of Education has travelled out of the country. He was appointed Vice President for UNESCO General Assembly. How can he travel out of the country without resolving the crisis in the education sector?’’ He said the Federal Government should spend the trillions of dollars in its Sovereign Wealth Fund to finance university education and improve infrastructure in the country. A key component of the agreement reached by both ASUU and the Federal Government was that government would inject N1.1trn into public universities in the next five years. Government is expected to inject N220bn yearly into the public university sector beginning from 2014. But government said it could only release N100bn this year, noting that the amount had already been processed. The Federal Government also indicated that the N1.1trn would be domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria to show its commitment to the agreement. The money is expected to be released on quarterly basis to the universities so that there won’t be any problem about funding the deal. The National Universities Commission and the Trade Union Congress will be the joint guarantors of the agreement while the Minister of Education will be the implementing officer. Government, according to sources at the meeting, also agreed to revamp public universities by ensuring that all the issues that always lead to strike are dealt with once and for all. Asked to confirm if lecturers were planning to call off their strike, ASUU Chairman, University of Calabar branch, Dr. James Okpiliya, said the local chapter was yet to get formal briefing on the meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan. He, however, said the union would make its position known to the press on the President’s offer after the end of a meeting scheduled for mid-night Thursday. Also, Chairman of ASUU in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Adegbola Akinola, said that members must be properly briefed on the resolution between the Federal Government and representatives of ASUU in the last marathon meeting. He said the only condition that could make its members accept any offer would be the provision of necessary documents. He said, “The NEC meeting may not hold now. It is the local congress that is expected to hold first which is either tomorrow or Monday. “Our members are not yet briefed about the details, so it is when we meet that we will know the details and then discuss whether what we got is sufficient enough to justify our action or demand. “I can’t really pre-empt the mind of other members. But if we are to accept any offer, there must be document to back that up. We need to obtain documents on that. Maybe if there is a document, people may look at it critically.” However, the Federal Government said it would include the N1.1trn promised ASUU in the education budget starting from next year. It also said it was waiting for the union to know the next step to take. The Director, Press and Public Relations of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Olu Lipide, told one of our correspondents on Thursday that government was waiting for ASUU to take the necessary steps. Meanwhile, the Dean of Social Sciences, University of Lagos, Prof. Omololu Soyombo, has said that the general ASUU body must agree before the strike could be called off. He said, “It is difficult to believe the President but we give him the benefit of doubt. We believe that the President is noble, the ASUU president promised to give him a feedback. If this had been done earlier, the strike wouldn’t have extended for so long.” Corroborating his view, the Chairman, Lagos State University, ASUU, Dr. Jamiu Oluwatoki said, “It won’t be long again. By next week there should be a NEC meeting and subsequently the congress meetings before the president can call off the strike.” |

“You lied”, Okonjo-Iweala tells Coscharis Motors on controversial import waiver for Oduah’s armoured cars. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Thursday distanced herself and her office from the raging controversy concerning the two armoured BMW cars recently imported into the country for the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah. While the Chairman of Coscharis Motors Limited, Cosmas Maduka, told the House of Representatives committee on Aviation probing the N255 million purchase that the Federal Ministry of Finance granted his company waiver for the importation, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala dismissed such claims as “totally false and without foundation.” The minister first issued through her twitter handle, saying the customs waiver she approved had no link to either the aviation ministry or bullet proof cars, but for the importation of 300 cars ordered by the Lagos State government for the National Sports Festival (“EKO 2012”). She then followed up with a formal statement for clarification. “On June 23, 2012, the Lagos State Government applied for Waiver of Destination Inspection Charges and Duty Exemptions for Coscharis Motors Nigeria Ltd, the official Automobile Partner for the National Sports Festival (“EKO 2012”), to purchase 300 vehicles on its behalf for the event,” the Special Advicer to the Minister on Media, Paul Nwabuikwu, said in a statement. “Since the Lagos State Government met the laid down criteria, the waiver was granted. It is also important to clarify that the waiver granted to the Lagos State Government for the event did not include the purchase of armoured vehicles.” At the public hearing by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the Deputy Comptroller General of Customs, Manasa Jatau, had also accused Coscharis Motors of lying, by deceiving both the Ministry of Finance and National Security Adviser, NSA, into believing that the two armoured cars were among the ones acquired for Lagos state government for the National Sports festival. Mr. Jatau, who alleged that the N10.1 million import duty due to Customs for the two cars were not paid, said Coscharis had used the same waiver for the Lagos State cars on the controversial BMW’s associated with NCAA. “Coscharis imported the cars without paying import duties claiming there was a waiver from the Ministry of Finance. Coscharis obtained the waiver claiming the armoured cars were part of 300 vehicles imported for the Sports festival in Lagos last year, and therefore the beneficiary was Lagos State government. The cars had an End User Certificate from the NSA office in the name of Coscharis,” Mr. Jatau told the committee. The NSA office had apparently issued End User certificate without knowing that it was doing so for cars to be delivered to Stella Oduah or the NCAA. Reliable sources close to the office of the NSA, however, told PREMIUM TIMES last week that no such authorization certificate was ever issued to either the Minister of Aviation, Ms Oduah or the NCAA, to procure the controversial vehicles. |
France was in shock on Monday after the discovery of an underfed and dehydrated baby girl who had been forced to live in a car boot, apparently since birth. The little girl, aged between 15 and 23 months, was found by mechanics on Friday when her mother brought the car to a garage in Terrasson, in central France. Police said one of the mechanics heard "bizarre noises, like moans" coming from the car boot and opened it to discover the girl, who was naked, lying in her own excrement, dehydrated and feverish. The girl was taken to hospital where doctors said she was suffering from delayed growth and mental problems. The girl "was hidden, it seems since birth, and more seriously, she is suffering from significant (developmental) delays," local prosecutor Jean-Pierre Laffite told AFP. The situation "defies belief," he said. The girl's mother, 45, and her 40-year-old partner were arrested and charged on Sunday with child abuse and endangering a minor. The two are facing up to 10 years in prison. The mother told police that she had given birth in secret and hidden the baby's existence from everyone, including her partner, the girl's father. The couple had three other children -- a four-year-old girl and two boys aged nine and 10 -- who were handed over to social services following their parents' arrest. The couple were both of Portuguese origin and both unemployed. The mechanic who found the girl, Guillaume Iguacel, told AFP on Monday that he was still reeling from the discovery. "I'm still having trouble sleeping, it was a horrifying sight, seeing this little girl in her own excrement, not able to hold up her head, white as a sheet," he said. Iguacel said the girl's mother appeared to have little concern for her daughter. "We were deeply shocked because she didn't find this abnormal. We told her to remove the little girl (from the boot) and give her something to drink right away," he said. http://news.ng.msn.com/bizarre-news/shock-in-france-as-baby-found-living-in-car-boot-5 |

This shows the importance of education. No matter how old, education is relevant. All youths must take a clue especially the Northerners. |
78-year-old Mariana Ong’ango Ololo, a new pupil at Obambo Primary School, is not only the oldest pupil in her class, the grandmother is also the oldest pupil in the school. Ololo, who hails from Siaya county, reportedly showed up at the school unannounced on 14 May, in a school uniform with a shaved head and accompanied by her 56-year-old son George. The school principal Joseph Muloand told the Daily Nation, “It is a unique case. We have to lay down a strategy of handling such an elderly pupil.” Ololo has already missed classes on several occasions due to her poor health. The Nation reports that she is a mother of eight and has been a widow since 2002. She reportedly started school because of an interest in politics and was inspired to do so by the election of Uhuru Kenyatta. She told the Daily Nation, "“Uhuru Kenyatta is not an old man, but took over as fourth President because he has got an education. That is a clear indicator that a person cannot rank highly in society without an education.” Her story is very similar to that of Guinness World Record holder Kimani Maruge who enrolled in primary school at the age of 84. Maruge had a 2010 movie, called The First Grader, made about his experience. Source: http://african.howzit.msn.com/kenyan-granny-starts-school

OK. Go and sin no more. |
specialguest: We throw dirts through the window of a moving vehicle so the wind can blow it away to the road side. When you throw satchet of water, bottle of table water, Gala wraps, Suya wraps etc out of the window, it makes the environment dirty and ultimately block drainages. I felt like slaping the hell out of those I saw doing it. Very pathetic. |
alutacontinua: because most of the public transport mediums don't have a waste-bin in them. If the habit is to be curbed, we need to start from there. That is not enough excuse for the bad habit, though.God bless you. Can the MOD push this thread to the front page? Let people see this. NL may be the avenue to stop this behaviour. Thank you. |
Most Nigerians are in habit of throwing dirt through the window of a vehicle. I wonder sometimes if this habit is inherent, learnt or exists in our gene. Nigerians are aware of the consequence of this ugly behavior but their persistence is second to none. It cuts across all levels of society either old or young. It does not matter either rich or poor. Everyone partakes. Even if our market women are dirty, what about the elites? It beats my imagination going to smaller countries and finding them neat but my dear giant of Africa is full of craps on the road. Everyone is dirty. A boss of mine embarrassed a police office asking him why he didn't iron his cloth? I will recommend the those that agree with me to caution the next person that is found wanting in this ugly behavior. |
Since last year, I have been the only one to leave office earlier than others simply because of Lagos traffic snarl. That alone makes me hate going out late in the night. Staying late outside is certainly not my hobby. I must have got worked up sometimes before leaving office. I don't see any reason for hanging thereafter. |

?
This doesn't make it right but it is what it is.

When you throw satchet of water, bottle of table water, Gala wraps, Suya wraps etc out of the window, it makes the environment dirty and ultimately block drainages. I felt like slaping the hell out of those I saw doing it. Very pathetic.
