Will Nigerians Allow policies to Work?

My experience yesterday at Fistbank, oba Akran,Ikeja makes me thinking. I was there yesterday to collect a few dollars sent into my domiciliary account by my son am helping to supervise his building. I was at the bank to collect 3.5k dollars but was told that they have only 5dollar bills.what can I do with that and who will change it for me? I asked the lady at the desk when they will have for me to come back or can't the bank change it to Naira for me since they are expected to buy and sell according to what we heard. She said she doesn't know but why can't I transfered the money to a bureau de change that will give me the naira equivalent. I said I don't know any? Immediately a man strategically positioned beside me said he owns one and that I should transfer to his acct and he will transfer at 850 naira per dollar to my naira acct Immediately. I was afraid but to my surprise the lady at the counter assured me that I will not be duped, that i will receive the alert immediately. I quickly reduced the amount to be collected to 1k incase there is problem. Within 5minutes the transfer was done.
Why my story? I think the intention of government is that the bank should buy and sell dollar so that exchange rate will not be left in the hands of speculators. Why are banks officials now using intermediaries to decide exchange rate instead of their normal bidding with central bank?. The man is always sitting comfortably in the bank making deals that does not have receipts on behalf of corrupt bank officials. With this, It might be difficult to have single exchange rate with all these underground deals. Definitely dollars will continue to be on the rise this way. Government always have good ideas but implementation is the problem because of our greed and less respect for laws. PBAT will now be labeled wicked because what is expected to be achieved will not be realized.
I hope this post will reach those concerned and banks should be monitored.
Thanks

The main problem we have in Nigeria is that of human resources. It's mainly the problem of followership but we like to blame the leaders that are chosen from amongst us.

Nigeriens are happy the government was toppled. That alone speaks volume.
The people of Niger are not speaking against the coup because they are tired of something. They needed a change the government is not seeing to. So what does Nigeria have to do about that?

If the people are already tired of how they were being governed, don't you think the whole Nigeriens will join the battle? That will be a serious issue for both Nigeria and ECOWAS.

The only solution to this is deplomacy/dialogue and not war. So ECOWAS/Nigeria should not start what will be largely regretted later.

You are absolutely correct. I observed that too. However, I am above 40 and have witnessed at least one military coups in Nigeria. People are always happy immediately after a military coup but the excitements and hopes fade few months after. Besides, the issue is not about the happiness or sadness of the Nigerienes. It's about Nigeria's interest. Does the coup portend any short, medium or long term danger for our economic and political survival? That's the main thing that should determine Nigeria's moves .

I don't see a coup happening in Nigeria.
If it will, it should have happened during the second tenure of the immediate past 'regime.'

I agree with you. I don't see coup too but something more dangerous for Nigeria than a mere coup. In fact, coup may be better that what is to come if Nigeria doesn't intervene the right way.

Nigeria has enough problems. So they should just keep off Niger's problem.

You are right. However, you have to anticipate a problem and try to nip it in the bud when you can still do that instead of allowing it to fester and become cancerous. The fact that you leave your enemies alone does not mean that they will leave you alone. Don't you think so?
Foreign Affairs / Re: This Is How I Think Coup D'etat Takes Place by Academicwizman(m): 8:41am On Aug 01, 2023
With this, do you still think that Nigeria should not intervene?

Besides, those countries can be a breeding ground for terrorists that may continually torment Nigeria.
Foreign Affairs / Re: This Is How I Think Coup D'etat Takes Place by Academicwizman(m): 8:38am On Aug 01, 2023
Looking at this 2 maps, it appears that the goal of the coup in Niger are to achieve 2 major interconnected goals.

1. Blockade Nigeria
Recall that Nigeria is trying to open a trade route through the North Africa (planned pipeline to Europe through Morocco). Check the preelection townhall meeting of Tinubu with the Northern elites). Niger has to be Nigeria's ally for that to work. That's the only route available before this coup. The blockade seems to serve both Russia as well as the United States'interest but to the detriment of France. Could US and Russia be working together codedly or it is just a coincidence?

2. To cut Nigeria's rising economic and political influence in Africa. The subsidy removal and the liberalisation of the foreign exchange regime are masterstrokes (although very painful now) and the harmony between the legislature and the executive arms of government can propel Nigeria to greatness. Supplying crude to Europe via the North Africa will greatly increase Nigeria's influence in Africa beyond it's traditional west Africa. This is a direct threat to the interest of the real Western powers. Hence, Nigeria must be stopped. The coup leaders will never work with Nigeria, so the pipeline project appears to have been checkmated with the coup. You see a coup, what I really see is a blockade of Nigeria to exploit alternative route from it's traditional coastal route (prone to sophisticated pirate attack).

His Excellency
Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu
Governor of Lagos State
Office of the Governor
Lagos House, Alausa,
Ikeja, Lagos State,
Nigeria

Urgent Plea for Intervention - Delay in Obtaining Letter of Administration for Deceased Mother's Pension and Benefits

Your Excellency,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to you today as a concerned citizen of Lagos State, filled with a deep sense of frustration and disappointment over the prolonged delay in obtaining the Letter of Administration necessary for my deceased mother's pension and other accrued benefits. It is with a heavy heart that I seek your intervention in this matter, as the process has been mired in seemingly deliberate acts of the authorities involved.

Firstly, please allow me to express my utmost respect for the efforts your administration has made in improving the lives of Lagosians. Your commitment to governance, infrastructure development, and welfare programs has been truly commendable. However, I bring to your attention a pressing issue that requires immediate attention and resolution.

The process to obtain the Letter of Administration for my late mother's entitlements began approximately over one year ago. We have diligently followed all necessary procedures, paying the required fees and completing the requisite documentation. Despite our best efforts, the process has been plagued with delays and obstacles, with the most significant setback being the non-release of the Letter of Administration by the Lagos State High Court.

Your Excellency, it is disheartening to note that my mother, a proud Lagosian from both her mother and father's side, dedicated her life in service to our dear state. She faithfully contributed to its development and progress. It pains me deeply that her children, all proud Lagosians ourselves, appear now being denied the right to access her entitlements. This situation not only adds to our grief but also threatens our ability to sustain ourselves and honor her memory.

We recently discovered that pension payments for pensioners have been made by the office of the Governor. It is disheartening to learn that administrative bottlenecks, are causing such distressing delays in obtaining the rightful entitlements of deserving individuals. We place our trust in your commitment to promoting efficient governance.

I implore you, Your Excellency, to direct appropriate authorities to intervene in this matter with utmost urgency. We humbly request that you use your good office to expedite the release of the long-awaited Letter of Administration, enabling us to rightfully claim our mother's pension and benefits. We understand the immense challenges faced by your administration and the multifaceted responsibilities you bear, but we trust in your dedication to justice, fairness, and eradication of corruption.

We firmly believe that the values of transparency, accountability, and efficiency that your administration upholds can help rectify this situation. Your intervention would not only alleviate the burden on our family but also serve as a testament to the government's commitment to safeguarding the rights of its citizens.

Your Excellency, we place our hopes in your compassionate leadership, knowing that you will extend a helping hand to your fellow Lagosians in their time of need. We are confident that you will take the necessary steps to ensure that justice is served, and our family can access our mother's entitlements without further delay.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We eagerly await a positive resolution and remain grateful for your tireless efforts in making Lagos State a better place for all its residents.

Yours sincerely,

Obasanya S.O.

Please help us share far and wide. It's our turn today, it may be yours tomorrow

Foreign Affairs / Re: Ghana's Currency Slumps To World’s Worst Performer Versus Dollar by Academicwizman(m): 6:16pm On Oct 18, 2022
Heffalump:

We are talking in terms of exchange rate here: Naira, Cedi, and Dollar. Currently if you compare the naira and dollar exchange vs cedi and dollar exchange, the Ghanaian Cedi ranks higher than the naira. I am aware they revalued their currency in 2007 and that placed their currency on the pedestal of fresh competitiveness among other currencies of the world. It has positive and negative implications, which I don't have time to enumerate here. It also requires some proactive measures to keep it afloat through strong economic plans and policies, else the value erosion could be massive in the long run. Ghana has tried very well to sustain the strength of their currency for a while now. The situation they are facing is generic all over the world. No thanks to the Ukrain-Russia war, coupled with the pandemic era. With the little insight given above, you could vividly understand my position earlier.

You have thus, proven your ignorance and half education on a public forum like this. I made my point without insulting anyone, but you took me to the cleaners. Your education is a waste if you don't know how to coordinate yourself and address issues properly in the public and communicate with civility. You have scammed your parents for wasting their hard earned money on you in the name school fees. I will aslo advise you submit yourself to the nearest psychiatric hospital for mental health examination, because I could spot some schizophrenic attitude in the fragrant display of unwholesome character.
Nonesense!

You tried with your analysis of Ghana's currency, but I disagree with your submission on the better currency. Before redenomination, 1$ was about 9,500 Ghana cedis. This implies that at the time of introducing the new cedis (re-denominated), 1$ was about 0.95 re-denominated Cedis. As at August, 2022, it is now 10 re-denominated Cedis to 1$. That means that Ghana Cedis lost 10 times its value between 2007 and 2022. That's about 1000%. Compared to Nigeria, around 2007, 1$ was about N130. In 2022, let's say N700. That is about 51/2 times loss in value. Both currencies have lost a lot of value but Naira is still stronger. If you had saved your money in Naira and Cedis at the same time, your Cedis' balance would be worse. Although, Nigeria's economic indices might be responsible rather than the management acumen of our leaders.

Naira is still among the worst currencies of the world.
Those beating their chest about Ghana, their currency is still far stronger than Nigerian naira.

How can you compare yourself with a country whose currency exchanges at less than 13 cedi to 1$ and you, who has almost $750 to the dollar? We are not mate to Ghana at all.
Consider political stability, security, social amenities, trade and tourism (Nigerians trooping to Ghana for foreign training like Dubai). Nigeria is still learning and coming from a distance behind.
See the truth and say it. period

Add four zeros to the Cedes before you compare. Let me help you. When you add back the four zeros, Ghana Cedes to $1 will now be GH₵130,000 to $1. Now, tell me which of the currencies is stronger. Ghana currency is fast going the way of the Zimbabwe's currency unless the country do something extraordinary.

Besides, if Nigeria also re-denominates her currency like Ghana did (removing 4 zeros), 7.5 kobo will be ( nominally) equal to $1. According to your logic, Naira will be more valuable than the US Dollar which is not true.

By calling off the ASUU strike close to election, many youths who have hoped to cast their votes against BAT and Atiku will be destabilised. It will be too late to transfer their PU from wherever they register to their schools. The game appears to be rigged against the enlightened youths burning with anger to change the status quo. Many of them don dey Japa internally and externally. This makes it difficult for Obi's emergence as the next president.
Autos / Re: Am Buying A Used Bike On Jiji What Are The Document I Need To Collect by Academicwizman(m): 7:00pm On Sep 05, 2022
1. Original purchase receipt. Make sure the 'chassis no' on the receipt tallies with the one on the bike.

2. Registration documents if the bike is already registered. The documents include:
i. Allocation certificate
Ii. Weighing certificate
iii. Vehicle license
iv. Certificate of road worthiness
v. Insurance certificate

Please note that the i-iii are the important ones.

3. Court affidavit for change of ownership

The most important document is the original purchase receipt (not photocopy). Verify that the chassis number on the original receipt is the same as the one on the bike. This is very crucial.

Check that chassis number on all documents received are the same.
CAVEAT EMPTOR (Let the buyer beware)

Enjoy!

Family / Re: How I Survive On A Salary Of 95k As A Married Man by Academicwizman(m): 8:38am On Aug 22, 2022
tomtomastom4:
I created this thread in response to the post on front page about ladies that date men who earn less than 100k. Below is the link.

https://www.nairaland.com/7292274/ladies-relationship-men-earns-100k

Of a truth, its not easy to manage such amount, but when one is already in such situation, you just have to manage and improvise.
Now like the OP of the above thread requested, here is the break down of how we make our expenses.

To start with, I was earning about 130k previously before we got married by March this year, but I changed job and the pay of the new job is 95k. STarted the new job around Feb this year, even though there was a loan I was paying off.. Need I add that my wife was working in a firm where shes paid 45K, but two months after our married, she quit the job due to pregnancy stress. Am sure ladies will understand.

This is our break down.
Monthly salary 95k
I remove 40k first from the salary and transfer it to 3 different acct.
The first acct receives 20k. This acct is not touchable except on extreme emergency. Its our main savings acct.
The second acct gets 10k and its for our rent, also non touchable. Rent is 150k per year. Before u say my rent is high compared to my salary, I like my privacy very well. and the cost of rent isnt friendly in my state.
The third acct also gets 10k. This one is for semi savings. This acct is touchable when cash at hand have been exhausted before the next month salary.

From the remaining 50k,
I send 10k to my family acct. I and my brothers do contribute 10k+ every month and its been used to run expenses WRT our parents and last born.
I gv my wife 10k for her monthly up keep. Its small. But its the sacrifice we all have to make for the good of the family.
I hold 10k myself for logistics and transport. I must confess, is not enough. But One have to strive. My wrk place isnt far. SO transport is N100 to and fro, thats approximately 3k per month. The remaining money i use it for other logistics. 4k out of this money goes for gas wch last for abt 2 weeks. And when we want to refill and there is no other money left, we fall back to the 3rd acct.
The remaining 20k is strictly for food ( On this food issue is where I "duff my hart" cos shes really managing things well and trying.
Sometimes, I really feel for her, cos this her pregnancy makes her to crave for things that is not on our food menu, but then when the money is not there, she just surpress the cravings. At times I feel bad.

The remaining 5k, for now is used to pay back a tailor who sewed multiple pregnancy gowns for my wife.

Its good to add that any small money I make like 1k or 2k on side hustle, I directly buy mudu of rice, beans or flour for swallow.

Its not easy at all. But there are families with kids leaving below that.

My wife is abt 5mnths pregnant, we plan to divert the 20k savings to buying baby things in preparation for child birth.

The truth is that the economic situation in this country is bad and so cost of leaving is very high. But then one have to survive.
But then in Nigeria now, how many percentage of the population earn above 100k. In fact how many jobs out there pays such as amount.

The only advice I have for ladies is that if you are not working and you parent family is the type need financial help from your husband after marriage, or you are the type of lady that is high class and wont settle for less or manage with your man. Plz kindly wait and take your time to look for a man that is RICH or financially capable of taken care of you and maybe your family. Please dont hide under the cover of you want to marry quick and then accept a struggling man only to start putting pressure on his head. Plz wait and marry a rich man.

Most responsible men wont really appreciate it if you are always demanding for things you knw fully well that he can not afford.

It is also good to note that no condition is permanent, things will definitely get better. A better job might come or my wife might get a job after her maternity which will increase our income.

The bottom line is, as a couple, but of you will have to work things out to improve your finances.

Oga, I doff my hat for you for the struggle that you are going through. However, I do not see a plan for an escape route from this your analysis. I see you walking tighter rope in the future if this continues (I pray it doesn't/ Therefore, I'll like to ask the type of job that you do, particularly the timing. I am asking to know if a suggestion can be made.

prost80:

I will only comment one 1 & 2 and then if i have time on the others

1. This is a no brainer but it will be impossible to do, because of the following. Firstly from the point of view of the investor, no investor will want to come into Nigeria, with a history of policy flipflops, the price of electricity is not cost reflective , coupled with the laws of generating, transmitting and distributing are no not streamlined. The kind of investors one is talking about are the GE & Siemens type, as they are ones with the financial muscles for this. From the point of view of the populace, they have gotten high bills from NEPA(PHCN) with no corresponding power being given, coupled with that is that the purchasing power of the populace has been eroded by the gross mismanagement of the Buhari administration. So there are no likeable solutions neither are they easy.
However, the first we must safeguard is the investor. Nigeria does not have the amount of money needed to upscale the power gradually so people can feel it, besides there is a gulf of mistrust from the citizenry. Another option is to Borrow but we all have that past bad results and this will likely not be an easy sell neither will it sail through
ONLY SOMEONE WHO HAS ENOUGH POLITICAL CAPITAL CAN PULL THIS OFF. SOMEONE PEOPLE CAN TURST. PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO TAKE SOME PAIN BUT WHEN THEY SEE THE LEADERSHIP NOT TAKING THE SAME OR GREATER PAIN THEN YOU ARE AT A LOSS, WHICH IS WHY I BELIEVE THE LIKES OF TINUBU AND ATIKU CANNOT CHANGE THE COUNTRY BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY POLITICAL CAPITAL . IF THEY ENTER AND TRY IT , PEOPLE WILL RESIST ANY INCREASE IN PRICE IN ELECTRICITY E BECAUSE THEY SEE THEM LIVING LIKE KINGS(THEY DONT WANT TO FEEL ANY PAIN) AND THEY WANT EVERYBODY ELSE TO PICK/FEEL THE PAIN, BUT THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO DO SAME (CUT THE COST OF GOVERNANCE). LEADESHIP IS BY EXAMPLE NOT COMMAND. PEOPLE SIMPLY DO NOT TRUST THEM. i AM NOT SOLD ON OBI BUT , WE ARE SEEING PEOPLE HAVE HOPE IN HIM AND THAT IS SOMETHING ONE CANNOT BUY.
I wrote the above in capital because that is the starting point. the following is needed: First we need to make laws that make it possible for states or regions(I believe we should go back 6 regions) to generate, transmit and distribute without going to the national grid. Also we have to accept that fingers are not equal. Some places will get electricity running quicker than others, places where investors know they can get huge ROI because it is a risk to invest in a junk status country like Nigeria. SO places like Lagos, P/H, Abuja, Abeokuta/Otta might see investments first. Government must be willing to allow this. We must give the investors free hand, like GE or Siemens, so they have control of the whole value chain form generating to distributing to homes, with cost reflective prices . If more pipelines need to be built in these places so be it. So to facilitate this, you must have a one-stop shop for this. call it whatever , but this place must be run like a Project Management Office (PMO) and they have the ears of the president.

Which brings me back to another thing. Anyone who enters that has political capital, should be quick. Fully deregulate the fuel and electricity and the subsidy pour into something people can feel, more on that later. Such a person should be priming the people, and once he has his cabinet(not like Buhari after 6 months, but any serious person, should form his cabinet within 7 to 14 days, for they must hit the ground running). deregulate quickly, say one month after taking power.

A serious government would have had discussions before entering office, but it wont be easy!!!

2. The solution is to restructure. If anyone is not considering restructure to move us to a producing country, then please dont waste peoples time. The current system does not reward or incentivize innovation. Most of the states in Nigeria are not doing anything, and are not viable, and so the states that can be productive -their wealth is being shared with others that do not do anything and do not want to exploit their human and natural resources. This cannot be. In my opinion we need to restructure Nigeria into 6 regions/development centers (in other of economic strength and innovation -SW, SS, SE, NW, NC, NE)and the areas that produce more will get most of their wealth back-revenues. That way you are rewarding hardwork and discouraging laziness. The regions that dont have enough to stand like NC, NE.government should assist them by investing this areas-and they must look for what they can produce on a industrial scale).

Also we must learn to think. Agriculture is good, but if we want to drag people from poverty , Technology/Manufacturing is the way forward. Take a look at the whole west africa, we are all into agriculture( let us leave subsistence farming for other African countries-let the place like NW-mechanize their agriculture), what we really need is to focus on Tech and manufacturing (from cars, tractors, shoes, equipment, agro-processing)-we are the largest English speaking country in Africa, and we are located at the trigger of Africa on the map. Our foreign policy is too docile, we just follow the west and do not court others , if the west want our support then we will only trade it with huge financial inputs, else we stay neutral and court others- This conflict is a gold mine, to play your cards to both the west and china/Russia axis. This is what even the Saudis and Indians are doing but our docile Buhari criticized Russia and for what? his continued medical tourism to the UK? For us to really crack tech and manufacturing, part of the subsidy removal money should flow into our educational institutions & to support our industries. Each tech/manufacturing facilities should be tied to an institution of higher learning(they will be the problem solvers for the industries operational problems)-This must be done on purpose. We have a diaspora of unparalleled intelligence, our embassies should earn their money and invite them., maybe have then visit Nigeria and give us directions, once they see we are serious , they could pioneer new industries.

We need to professionalize/train and standardize our artisans, this should be part of the subsidy removal money. our mechanics, police, builders, welders, plumbers- so they are do things faster and with super quality, (good soup na money cause am). We ,then, have to protect our industries and people. Dangote is building a refinery and importing foreigners, indians, that should not be so, no matter how rich billionaires indians are in their country they cannot bring low paid foreigners to work in their country, Why are we allowing dangote and others do such? I can go on. I have a write up on this, and can share

This is a very good, rational thinking. Although rather than considering these proposed solutions as standalone, deliberate efforts should be made to employ system approach that will consider tradeoffs that maximizes benefits. We need sincere, detribalised think-tank, political capital (just like you said). Buhari had the best political capital in Nigeria's modern history but he appeared to squander the priceless 'political capital' to get many things working. I do not blame him entirely because the structure of the country stiffles growth and does not encourage efficient management.

It can't be too late because I am not the president yet grin

For you, yes, but for Nigeria who can't immediately ask you to leave presidency when you already have power without solution, it may indeed be too late. ☺️

Many people wish that Buhari can just leave the seat today but it still remains a wishful thinking.

I told you what I'd do. The truth is all that's necessary. If they don't accept oh well no big deal. They can stagnate in poverty and disfunction as they please. Lol it's unpopular so what? Unpopular policies pass all the time with little push back. They protest and strike in I'll simply fire people ban them from the civil service like Ronald Reagan. If they're private sector another company will fill the void.

The goal of this thread is not to try but to win by all means. You need to make them accept. Practical alternative routes to achieve that?
