TheNeededShock: what value would the west get from a rail line to the east...the government should put this effort into building of cargo rail lines that connects the north to the SW and a trans-national rail line that connects nigeria to Ghana. Set up ruga operations in the north and bring the cows via rail to the lagos market. The coastal rail is the key to the success of the Lekki Free trade zone. The black line at the top is where the East-West line is supposed to be. The red line is where they want to connect the Dangote refinery and the Lekki port to the coastal rail.

sulaak: What was Nigeria development before the British took over?
By 1902 the British had built a tramway in Lagos, completed the Lagos to Kano railway, the Port-Harcourt railway. Till this day Nigeria cannot build or maintain railway. The Monorail that Amechi started in PH has yet to be commissioned, Lagos light rail that started in 2008 is nowhere to be found. The only mistake they made was joining North and South and messing up the land laws. |

Despite his flaws, Buhari is one of the best presidents in Nigeria's history in terms of infrastructure. And the completion of the Nigeria coastal rail, will cement his legacy as a man who didn't let tribalism cloud his judgement.
The second image shows where the Lagos state government plans to connect the Lekki free trade zone to the national rail network. This will be crucial to the success of the Dangote refinery and the new Lekki Port. The rail will also be connected to Benin and Onitsha and open up the tourism industry in Calabar and Obudu to millions of domestic tourists all over the country.

Visitors to Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso are impressed by the city's wide, spotless streets and easy flow of traffic -- a far cry from the daily gridlock of other African cities like Lagos or Port Harcourt. The Burkina government has embarked on a massive infrastructure push designed to ease congestion and improve quality of life in this impoverished West African state of just 20 million.

With the massive housing shortage, you would think these people would built at least 5 stories to accommodate as many people as possible. But they would rather built bungalows. This is basically a largescale village, not a city.

Faithful007: Actually, as an economic analyst. you'll need to think more like one. First of all, skyscrapers shouldn't be a mark of development. In fact, they're the very reason that property prices in Dubai have crashing for close to ten years. Just simple demand and supply. Cities like Barcelona,London and Paris do not have as much Skyscrapers as Dubai, Shanghai, Newyork and Hong Kong, but who takes in more money in tourism? Multiple skyscrapers are only suited to a business hub. I expected you to complain more about poor house construction and the poor state of infrastructure such as roads. I'm not asking for skyscrapers. I'm just asking for normal human development. How is it that France and Barcelona, Spain was able to built these dense Urban centers over 200 years ago, while Nigerian cities are still looking like slums despite better technology and higher levels of wealth. It simply doesn't make sense. First pic is Paris, second pic is Barcelona. Third pic is mainland Lagos. The European cities don't need skyscrapers because they are using every meter of land efficiently.

Agbegbaorogboye: Pure capitalism does not necessarily facilitate competition. The idea of capitalism is that individuals control the factors of production and the market determines the prices. Even at that, where "an" individual begins to control the factors of production, the possibility of a monopoly comes in which leads to the market becoming unable to determine price as demand and supply become controlled by the individual.
Funny to always blame Nigerians for something govt should take charge of. Ever heard of anti-trust laws in the US? Why don't you read up on it and see how people who realize the weaknesses of capitalism guard against it.
It's not a cultural problem, it's the problem that comes with capitalism. It needs to be solved by thinking about it not just lumping Nigerians together and insulting them. I don't know where you all get the idea that Nigerians should be angels who will not be privy to human nuances. A-conomist You are acting as if the government isn't made up by and elected by Nigerians. If you look closely, you will notice that every aspect of Nigerian society is extremely exploitative and wicked, from the churches to the schools to the hospitals. It's cultural. |
Politics › Re: Petrol: NNPC Can No Long Bear N120bn Monthly Subsidy – Kyari Warns Nigerians by Aconomist: 11:58am On Mar 26, 2021 |
Agbegbaorogboye: 4. Dangote is a classical example of capitalism embedded with cronyism and corruption. It is why capitalism in its purest form can't work in Nigeria. Too many extenuating factors. Our elites who basically control the factors of production are not ready to go into manufacturing as you desire. They are only profit seeking. Capitalism is not a patriotic economic idea. It is based on self-preservation. We can't just leave everything to capitalism especially at the juncture we find ourselves. We need honest assessments that will lead to practical and workable solutions. That's my premise. Pure capitalism is supposed to facilitate competition. Dangote is not practicing capitalism, he is practicing cronyism to an eyewatering degree. The same thing has happened in the electricity industry where the discos are now trying to exploit their distribution monopolies to fleece the public. Nigerians are abnormally wicked and corrupt people, and it's not just the government -- the businessmen are even worse. Until that cultural problem is fixed, I don't see any hope for the country. |

Depressed101: what is wrong with those structures erected by Nigerians... can you give a technical breakdown of what they got wrong ? Buying land for $1 million to a erect a one story bungalow, a single family home or a duplex is very stupid and abnormal. You don't see this behavior in any other country -- not even relatively poor countries like India, Lebanon or Eygpt. High land prices are supposed to incentivize you to build higher, the way these Lebanese did. Nigerians would rather just build a single family home to sell for a unjustifiably high price. |
