McSquishi: I don’t care if they look like Lagos. And there are parts of those cities that do look worn down and underdeveloped...
Americans can’t be compared to Nigerians as the histories and politics and culture are totally different so naturally the populations will face a different reality.
That was also beside my point. The worst part of New York is better than the best part of Lagos. Thats why the people are largely satisfied from an infrastructure perspective. |

McSquishi: ask New Yorkers why New York looks like a slum or ask why LA looks like a slum and you’d get the same defensive responses. This is not a Black thing or a Nigerian thing, humans get defensive over things/people/places that shape their identity. Well New York and L.A. aren't slums. If they looked like Lagos, the people would revolt. Americans aren't sleepy and primed for mediocrity like Nigerians are. |

owobokiri: That's a billion dollars project! Which socalled private investor is going to take such gamble in Nigeria, when he can make double with that, say in the oil and gas sector. It's not a billion dollar project. Basic paving and piling would cost maybe half the price of a road, which is $1.5 to $3 million per km. (The whole coast is around 15 kilometers, and they don't have to do it all at once) After that, the private developers only have to make restaurants, marinas, shopping, etc. |

Grgton: onitsha skyline isn't that bad, while coming in from Asaba via the Niger bridge The skyline looks good compared to other Nigerian cities. That's not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about paving the river bank. This small improvement would have a transformational impact on the city. |

PROUDIGBO: One thing we’re forgetting is that you don’t build a impressive row of skyscrapers unless you have the political-economy to sustain it! Had Onitsha the status of say Hong Kong, Monaco or evening Lagos here, then a impressive and awesome waterfront would have evolved organically!
So let’s be fair on Onitsha! I'm not talking about the skyscrapers. I'm talking about paving the area between the water and the land as is done in developed countries. Some cities use wooden planks to cover this area. This development prevents erosion, makes the area safe for tourists, and beautifies the environment. It is a key feature in every riverine city.

gwafaeziokwu: By the way will heaven fall if federal government give an important commercial city like Onitsha a befitting water front? Will Nigeria break if federal government do meaningful projects in the south East just like is obtainable in all regions.
Since the east is expected to do everything by themselves even with low allocation, allow us to prioritise biko.
If successive fed government regimes in Nigeria has built an airport in Onitsha like they promised maybe Obiano would have used the airport funds to do other meaningful things.
I hate it when people will wear wrist watch and be looking for a mirror to check how beautiful it is. I'm not here to defend the FG, but remember they are building the second Niger bridge in Onitsha. And the East to West rail is also designed to connect Onitsha with Benin. What more do you expect? Anambra should be like Lagos and develop its own income streams.

Show us the pictures of other waterfront so we can all do a general discussion. Until then keep your observation to yourself. All of them are bad, including Lagos. The only place where we have a well-developed waterfront is Eko Atlantic. |

These governors and house of reps members could develop this whole area with one year's salary. All they have to do is pay an international architecture firm, like Gensler, to draw up plans for the area. Complete the land acquisition, and pay a private company like Julius Berger, ITB, or CCECC, to execute the plans. Development is very easy nowadays. There are private companies that can do all the thinking and work for you -- all you need is vision. |

It is only those of us who are cursed blessed with high intelligence and exposure who understand the gravity of our situation. Africans are like the living dead. Other races are ready to explore mars and develop self-driving cars while our people can't even pave a simple waterfront. It's unbearable to be stuck in a race like this. Onitsha is one of the most unique cites in Nigeria, famous for it high rise buildings. But the waterfront is completely undeveloped. The first image is the Onitsha waterfront. The second image is the waterfront in Luanda, Angola, and the third image is the waterfront in Singapore.
While other states in Nigeria are building brand new ports and metro rails, Anambra can't even provide a basic improvements to their city. The people of Onitsha are wailing about Buhari, meanwhile their local government is comprised of zombies.
edit: I'm not talking about the buildings. I'm talking about paving the riverbank

Ikeja is another overrated slum just like it's GRA I'm complaining about Lekki, Ikoyi, and Banana Island and you want to talk about ikeja? Ikeja looks like something from war-torn Congo or South Sudan. When I was last there, I couldn't believe that was really Nigeria. Most of the foreigners I was travelling with were also stunned at the subhuman and monkey-like conditions of Ikeja -- unfortunately, that's where the airport is located, so you can't avoid it. I felt massive embarassment to see such a zoo in my country... It's not even worth discussing. I wish someone would burn it down. |

Aderr: You this pained boy again? Did you know the population density in Lagos is at least 3 times higher than Shanghai? Building those wide roads is easier in places like Shanghai and Abuja than Lagos. Many houses have to be pulled down in Lagos if you want to see many of such wide roads in Lagos. Then those houses must be TORN DOWN before it is too late. The longer lagos waits to do this, the more expensive it will be. If you want to use density as an excuse, here is Mubai, India. Look at how wide and pleasant their streets are. Lagos will never be a modern city until this basic improvement is made to the transportation network.

Wide streets do more to improve quality of life and beauty in a city than almost anything else. The problem in Lagos is not overcrowding, its poor transportation planning. Imagine building these massive structures next to a tiny baby road like this? The traffic will be unbearable within 10 years.
There are at least 5 skyscrapers planned on Bourdillon street alone, but the government is making no attempt to widen this road.

RuudVanNisteroy: Look at the Niger Delta states that have had thrillions pumped into them through NDDC,state allocations and 13% oil derivations with nothing to show for it. As long as fantastically corrupt leaders lead a state or country, there will never be any progress when it comes to provision of basic amenities such as education, portable water, electricity, healtcare and good road network. Restructuring would still improve things by forcing people to hold their local leaders accountable. Right now in the SS and SE, most people are focused on blaming the federal government instead of their terrible governors. In the NE and NW people will support their incompetent ruling class to keep northerners in charge. Lagos is the only state that has evolved past this pathetic way of thinking -- the rest of the SW is just jungle, imo. |
