Basic Special Forces Training Cycle complete, after 57 gruelling weeks. During the qualification parade - always held at night - these guys get their berets and Operator's badges. From here, based on assessments and conversations with instructors, they go to appropriate operational Commandos (Squadrons in SAS/SBS & Delta speak) within 4 or 5 Recce. The Advanced Training Cycle in their chosen area of specialisation awaits, even though they're now Recce Operators.

Fun Fact: During the war in Angola, they had to go on a mission before they could call themselves Recce Operators.

11 guys made it through the selection, I envy them. They fear non nut God.

It won't be a lone roikat. It will be at least 5. There mission and role has not changed. The job the 105mm would do in South Africa is done better by the Olyphant and ingwene launchers of the rate and badger.


We not excepting the roikat to attack defended positions alone.

But assaulting flanks or cutting-off heavy armour from being reinforced by medium or light armour would also work with the kat, for that a bigger gun would also help. Doing 4 Rooikats behind enemy lines has its disadvantages, they're big and noisy and would leave too much dust no go unnoticed, you'd honestly scout better with a minibus taxi coz you'll look the part.


As for the Ingwe ATM, let's be honest here, how many missiles do you think could be used in a conventional war? Just 50 of those fired would leave the Army with no money for the rest of the operation, unless your objective is to fire less than 10 and scare the enemy to surrender.

And they were not specifically built for anti armour......they were built for combat recce. Anti armour is a secondary(possibility even tertiary) role.

That's not how they're being used today. It might have been developed for long range recorn but that's not really possible in the 21st century, warfare has changed. A lone Rooikat inside a fully capable enemy would be dead meat and the SANDF generals new that as soon as the Bush War ended. No one bothered with the 105 Rooikat because in the 90s we were certain that we were getting those 100+ MBT with the Arms Deal. The new MBTs never came, then we would have to supplement the Olifants with something and the Kat is the only thing that can fit the 105 turret without falling on weight. Truth be told, it's highly needed so it be used on flanks in a tank vs tank war.

Slightly off-topic

That Zuma's free tertiary education is not feasible nor is it practical. It is calculated that you you'll need almost R60bn annually to fund it, increase it according to tuition fees which means it can reach R100bn in less than 15 years.

The problem in South Africa's economics is not the lack of graduates but it's the lack of startup businesses. So after spending R60bn on people (who eventually dropout) they'll still have little prospects of finding jobs, at least the ones they studied for. I personally know plenty of varsity graduates with shitty jobs. So what is my solution.....?

It's simple, the only free education that the state should engage in is at technical college level like FETs (or TVETs as they call them now). Someone who can't afford to go to university should at least get a technical skill that he could turn into a job. Secondly, cut down on child support grant and invest that money on business opportunity making schemes especially in the townships and rural areas like affordable light industrial zones and office spaces. At least then graduates with technical skills can make use of them for self employment opportunities.

Till then, everything will crumble in the name of free education with no benefits.

As Frumentius pointed out, they're used on CIT and truck hijacking. They're Chinese. They don't just block cellphone signals but satellite tracking and police communication as well. They're very common with Zimbabwean syndicates.

Literally around the corner from my parents house, it's along the route we take when we walk the dogs. I often wondered who lived there - with the high level of security (done on the cheap and really ugly) and the armed guards.

Even when they started talking about the Saxonwald Shabeen I didn't put two and two together. More than a couple big houses with mysterious owners around those parts... Imagine my surprise when I see that house pop up in my news feed.

Heck if I had known who's house it was, you bet I would have spent my university holidays training our dogs to take tactical dumps on their driveway.

That's actually the SANDF doctrine, it got Seleka talking "South Africans used powerful weapons" but that's for another day. We've been using the first generation Milkor MGL so it was about time.

Dude, how do you fighting without means to repair on the field? I don't know if you noticed, Casspirs, Buffels and Ratels always had extra wheels on them. The SADF almost wrote the doctrine on carrying extra wheels into battles. Vehicles like the Elands had run-flats. The Rooikat was designed not to ever ever need a service vehicle and didn't even need extra tires, it would still be operational even if it lost 25% of its wheels.


Remember this, the Border War was different from any conveniental war. Every operation taken had to be quick and it had to leave no trace back to South Africa. Add nothing on your operation that will slow you down in a country you shouldn't be in in the first place.

The battle was fought in what we called operations, it wasn't 7 months of non-stop fighting. At the end of each operation, the vehicles would go back to Namibia so there was never a base inside Angola. The only thing that was almost permanent in Angola was the 32Bn foot patrol and the Recces.
