The reason why we seem very choosy on helicopters is because not many helicopters can fly high as the Oryx.

- Mi38 : 5,900 m
- Pave Hawk :4,267 m
- Super Puma : 5,180 m

Just subtract 2000m from the given figures then you'll see how high they'll be flying off the South African ground.

The keywords here are "hot and high" performance. See, South Africa is a mid to high altitude country where most of its inland altitude is hundreds to thousands of metres above sea level. That affects helicopter flight dramatically because what could be eg 5km up in sky from the German surface is just 3km up in the sky from South Africa inland surface so helicopters have to fly even higher to compensate for that and that's where the European helicopters fail.

See, in South Africa everyone has an opinion on everything. Even student unions have a say about military affairs. The issue here is that the current administration appoints people with no experience in PR, when they have to go on TV and justify (or explain) the purchase of simply things like OPVs they simply avoid the media THEN social movements end up being more vocal.

There's a million reasons why you simply need to purchase the OPVs ASAP, Operation Phakisa is one of them. The Asians are literally stealing fish worth millions of dollars in our oceans just because we can't patrol efficiently.

My solution would be simple, we need a black budget that covers new military purchases THEN attach them to economic growth. When the economy grows outside the expected projection, those funds generated through taxes are immediately allocated to the Black Budget. Eg, the economy grew by some 1% this year unexpectedly , that's the total GDP of Gabon and Botswana immediately added to our GDP. The state tax collected on that growth is enough to cover the purchases of new equipment without it going public.

Crime in those cities is exceptionally high, every bit of specialised units help. Cape Town should be adding more specialised units, the crime in the Cape Flats townships is out of control.

Speaking of medium-lift helicopters, in 2025 we'll have to replace our 39 Oryx. We missed a trick by closing the production line and selling the un-used Puma air frames which could've formed the base for Oryx2. As it is, our current Oryx is on par with the latest Airbus H225M. With budgets being as niggardly, we won't afford the H225M.

2 choices really: new Mil Mi-17s which we would have to modify for African conditions (as we did with the Puma); or used Black Hawks which we'd also need to similarly modify.
Personally, I'd plumb for the slightly used carefully-chosen UH-60.

No Russian equipment please. I dislike them with passion, the Russians can't design nice looking things.

We rather get Uncle Sam... By the time those Oryx start falling off the sky, there'll be a new administration in power and probably the economy would have improved to increase the military budget. If you think about it, the only guy who was into Russia was JZ.

It's an African thingy, SSA politicians never stop to amaze. My business often render services to the state. I remember my municipality setting up the "Bring Back Our Girls" campaign. They threw a big galla event with all sorts of very important people talking all kinds of diplomatic words. In my mind was "does Boko Haram even care, it's just a waste of time and state money"... But I personally laughed all the way to the bank.

As for competing against the world, yes South Africa makes some of the finest tech in the respective fields. We don't make everything but what we make is amongst the best in those particular fields.....
