Business › Naira Strengthens Against Dollar, Appreciates To N786.02/$1 At The Offic by Addme(op): 8:10pm On Nov 02, 2023 |
The Nigerian naira appreciated against the dollar on Wednesday, 1st November 2023, closing at N786.02/$1 at the official market.
This represents a 3.73% increase from the N815.32/$1 recorded on the previous day.
The intraday high recorded was N1101.00/$1, while the intraday low was N701.00/$1, representing a wide spread of N400/$1.
According to data obtained from the official NAFEM window, forex turnover at the close of the trading was $105.98 million, representing a 41.82% decrease compared to the previous day.
On the black market where forex is sold unofficially, the exchange rate appreciated by 0.85%, quoted at N1170/$1, while peer-to-peer traders quoted around N1180/$1. More Insights The federal government is considering beginning the imposition of excise tax penalties on foreign exchange transactions done outside the official market window as part of the moves to discourage multiple exchange rates in the country.
This is one of the twenty recommendations put forward by the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, established by President Bola Tinubu in July to evaluate and provide guidance on reforms aimed at shaping Nigeria’s fiscal policy and tax system. The Tax Committee, led by Taiwo Oyedele, proposed a set of “quick win” recommendations.
These recommendations aim to tackle urgent economic concerns, such as exchange rate management, the consequences of removing fuel subsidies, controlling inflation, and promoting economic growth.
One of these suggestions is the introduction of an excise tax on foreign exchange transactions that occur outside the official market https://www.google.com/amp/s/nairametrics.com/2023/11/02/naira-further-strengthens-against-dollar-appreciates-to-n786-02-1-at-the-official-market/%3famp=1

Foreign Affairs › Man Sought In Double Homicide Fatally Shot By Police Officers by Addme(op): 11:44am On Nov 02, 2023 |
Previous Threadhttps://www.nairaland.com/7897064/neighbor-shot-dead-nyc-dad#126737273New York City police officers shot and killed a man on Wednesday morning, three days after investigators said he killed a father and son inside a Brooklyn apartment building during an argument over noise.
The police had been searching for the man, Jason Pass, 47, for more than two days after the shooting deaths of the two men. The father was Bladimy Mathurin, 47, and the police named the son as Mode Chinwai, 27. Before the shooting, the city had received about half a dozen calls from Mr. Pass’s apartment complaining about noises above.
When the police arrived at 11:39 p.m. on Sunday, they found Mr. Mathurin and his son lying in the hallway of the fourth floor of the apartment on Brooklyn Avenue with gunshot wounds to the head and torso. They were pronounced dead at the scene, the police said.
“It was a particularly vicious double shooting,” said Jeffrey Maddrey, the chief of the New York Police Department, during a news conference on Wednesday. Early Wednesday morning, police officers used license plate readers to track Mr. Pass’s vehicle. They found the black car at about 7 a.m. parked near Bay 44 Street and Bath Avenue close to Gravesend, a largely working class neighborhood. When they approached, the driver, later identified as Mr. Pass, ran out holding a six-inch knife, the police said.
Officers chased him to 187 Bay 44th Street, where they stopped him and “contained him,” said John Chell, the department’s chief of patrol, at a separate news conference.
The officers talked to Mr. Pass for about 15 minutes “doing everything they could” to persuade him to drop the knife, Chief Chell said.
Mr. Pass told the officers that what was happening was “not going to end well,” Chief Chell said. Then, he sprinted at the officers, pointing the knife at them.
“Our officers were forced to defend themselves,” Chief Chell said. “He didn’t give us a choice.”
Mr. Pass was struck three times in the chest and once in the leg, the police said. Mr. Pass died of his injuries at Lincoln Hospital.
The police said that they were still investigating how many officers were involved and whether more than one officer struck Mr. Pass. The police did not immediately provide body camera footage of the episode and said the investigation continued.
At Mr. Pass’s apartment, a woman declined to comment or open the door, calling the situation a “tragedy.” Late Wednesday morning, crime scene tape cut off three blocks in Gravesend. Over 20 yellow evidence markers dotted the street, showing where shell casings and evidence had been recovered.
Police officers were standing around a black Honda S.U.V. whose driver-seat door was still flung open.
Neighbors said that children had been crossing the street to get to school and commuters were heading to work when they saw the police talking to Mr. Pass before shots rang out.
Vanessa Del Carmin, 27, said she was in her kitchen getting her 5-year-old son ready for school when she heard gunfire. “It’s a quiet neighborhood, no shootings since I’ve been here. I think that’s why everyone was surprised,” said Ms. Del Carmin, a former Marine who has lived in the neighborhood for more than three years.
At the scene of the Sunday shooting, there were bullet holes in the doors along a hallway.
Dhelma Waters, 73, a neighbor, said her husband was leaving for work Sunday night when the shooting took place. She said she saw blood in the hallway and that the ordeal was “traumatizing.”
A single bullet had gone through her front door and was lodged in a blue plastic barrel drum of evaporated milk she had planned to send to family in Jamaica.
“I’m very nervous. I sleep in the chair right behind it,” Ms. Waters said. “If we hadn’t been packing a barrel to send home, I would have been shot.” https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/01/nyregion/brooklyn-police-shooting-murder-jason-pass.html

Politics › Delta Concert: Pinnick Sues Davido For N2.3bn, Demands 4-day Public Apology by Addme(op): 11:26am On Nov 02, 2023 |
The former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Amaju Pinnick, has sued famous Afrobeat singer, Davido over an alleged breach of agreement.
DAILY POST reports that Pinnick had on October 7, 2023, called out Davido over his failure to show up at the 19th edition of Warri Again Concert in Delta State.
The concert was held on October 6 to celebrate entertainers who hail from the Niger Delta region.
Pinnick, who is currently an executive of the world football governing body FIFA, accused Davido of receiving $94,600 to perform at the concert.
Also , he said a chartered plane “which cost another $18,000” was booked to convey Davido to Warri.
Reacting to this on his Instagram story, the singer vowed not to refund the money and assured his Warri fans of a performance soon.
He wrote: “If I’m returning any money I will return it to any football charity organization. In fact, I will double it. Mr Dream Crusher, imagine how many Nigerian footballers have had their dreams crushed because person one lives for Ikoyi by force.”
However in a new development, the organisers of the concert on Tuesday, filed a lawsuit of N2.3 billion against Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) Limited before a high court in Effurun, Delta.
The claimant, under the name Brownhill Investments Company Limited, is seeking damages of N2 billion, N30 million for the cost of filing the suit, legal and professional fees of N150 million. Also, the company asks the court to order the singer to tender four days public apology in two national daily newspapers and on his social media accounts.
Brownhill Investments noted that the musicians’ breach of contract caused significant financial losses. The company had already expended humongous resources on print and social media adverts and promotions for the event. It also had to pay for the private jet and other expenses related to Davido’s performance https://dailypost.ng/2023/11/01/delta-concert-pinnick-sues-davido-for-n2-3bn-demands-4-day-public-apology/

And the way Fubara is talking, It would have been better if Rivers people are with him but with what happened during the election, I doubt if anyone will support him now except if the support will come to spite Wike. This is the best time for PDP to rally round him but unfortunately Wike still has them in his pocket. Not the best time for Fubara |

There is nothing wrong if fidelity demand that those 3 meet certain requirements before they are considered valid for financial transactions. Dey there make soap enter your eyes for bathroom. MMM case is different from these neobanks Are they not NDIC registered? What makes them different from normal banks is just because they are digitally inclined and less stressful to open than these commercial banks. Where was Fidelity bank when Emefiele started his madness. Most of them including Fidelity Bank still have unresolved transactions since then till date.
