Alleged Graft: Agric Research Institute Workers Want Director Sacked 08/01/2013 18:11:00 THEWILL Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font image SAN FRANCISCO, January 08, (THEWILL) - The academic and non-academic staff of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Moor Plantation, Ibadan, Oyo State, have called for the sack of the Director and chief executive of the Institute, Prof. Adefemi Ogunbodede. Acting under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff, and the Junior Non Academic Staff, the workers, who staged a peaceful protest to drive home their call, accused Ogunbodede of corruption and favouritism. They also alleged that the Ogunbodede-led management misappropriated a whooping N177.5 million meant for the payment of 17 months hazard, transfer and other allowances of the workers. The protesting workers are also kicking against alleged disbursement of funds without due process and reference to the audit department and alleged running of the Institute like a fiefdom by the director. Also, they accused the Director of recruiting his kinsmen and acquaintances at the expense of more qualified applicants. Singing abusive songs denigrating the Director during the protest, they displayed placards, some of which read: “Ogunbodede must go”; “All we are saying is give us our rights”; “ Save IAR&T from collapse”; “Minister of Agric, OAU VC, please intervene and save IAR&T”. Chairman of the Institute's chapter of ASUU, Dr. Olunfunmilayo Ande, who addressed journalists on the crisis, deplored what she described as the apparent vacillation of the authorities of the Institute on the reports of the three panels set up to investigate the allegations against the director by the university, Agriculture Ministry and the Ministry of Finance. She maintained that the workers' joint action became necessary to save the Institute from collapse, adding that there had been no meaningful research done in the Institute since the inception of Ogunbodede’s administration. On his part, the NASU chairman, Mr. Femi Oladeinde, said the workers had lost confidence in Ogunbodede and asked government to sack him. When contacted for his reaction to the allegations , Ogunbodede declined to comment on the issue, referring the anxious journalists to the vice chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile- Ife,Professor Tale Omole, whom he said was the only person competent to speak on the matter. He maintained that as a public servant, he was not obliged to speak to the press unless with the permission of the supervising vice chancellor. IAR&T is a research organ of the Federal Government with OAU, Ile Ife, the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Research Council as supervisory agencies. When contacted on the issue, the OAU vice chancellor, Omole, however, confirmed that he had received a petition on the allegations, which, he said, were being investigated. Omole explained that the white paper on the outcome of the probe was not out yet, because the panels probing the matter were yet to conclude their work. According to him, the one set up by the university, for instance, asked for extension of time. He however advised the workers to be patient, saying "the matter is complicated because the panels were set up by three independent bodies and we have to look at everything before a decision could be made." He nonetheless assured that if Ogunbodede is eventually found guilty, the law will surely take its course. "My administration will not condone any fraudulent act that can damage the reputation of the university,” he assured. |
FG loses millions to private jet owners Written by Shola Adekola-Lagos advertisement ONE of the several ways through which the Federal Government is being ripped off by wealthy Nigerians is by parking unserviceable private jets at the airports thereby denying the relevant government organisations the expected revenue generation. The Nigerian Tribune, at the weekend, gathered that some individuals, who have these private jets have become a thorn in the flesh of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the agency saddled with the responsibility of running the hangar situated at the local wing of the Lagos airport. The private hangar is used for parking by the wealthy private jet owners where they are charged for enjoying such services. According to information gathered, an estimate levy charged for the parking of such jets a day is put at between N10,000 and N20, 000. Apart from these wealthy Nigerians, jets belonging to some rich General Overseers of some churches are also parted at the private hangar. The Nigerian Tribune further gathered that while many of the private jet owners are indebted to the relevant aviation agencies which provide different services for them running into several billions of naira, the private jets belonging to some men of God are not left out. According to information gathered at the weekend, the aviation agency running the private hangar where such private jets use for take-off or landing at the local airport have ordered owners of abandoned private jets parked at the hangar to remove them. http://odili.net/news/source/2013/jan/7/603.html |

For instance, while Anambra was assigned a cut-off of 136, Imo, 135, Abia, 128, and Delta, 126; educationally-disadvantaged states like Kebbi had 35, Jigawa, 33, Taraba, 29, Sokoto, 27 and Yobe, zero. This perfectly supports the JAMB records that have consistently shown that Imo, Anambra, Delta and Abia (I admit that Ogun has given Abia a good run for some time now) produce the highest number of university admittants for the past several years. Despite the low quality of education in Nigeria, you cannot dream of JAMB if you do not have the basic entry qualification. |

If a government-owned university facility looks like this, I wonder what facilities in all those mushroom universities in the SW look like |
OOUTH: A teaching Hospital under the Weather Tuesday, November 20, 2012 OOUTH advertisement Ogun State correspondent, Olayinka Olukoya, recently visited the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, (OOUTH), Sagamu, and reports on its state as well as the challenges confronted by patients and health workers in the hospital. THAT the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, is designed to focus on providing high quality healthcare services to Ogun State in particular and Nigeria as a whole is now doubtful. No thanks to the prevailing situation in the hospital which is threatening the capacity of the hospital to provide tertiary healthcare services with a cutting edge. The hospital, which was transformed from general to a teaching one after the establishment of Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), is being confronted with inadequate staffing, dearth of facilities, dilapidated structures as well as unpaid salary. The teaching hospital once ranked as one of the best in the country has now fallen below the par and if urgent steps are not taken to address these issues confronting it, the good successes recorded in the hospital will go into oblivion. OOUTH, indisputably, is a leading light among state-owned health institutions in Nigeria and her graduates are professionals who have been able to demonstrate their dexterity and versatility in the field of medicine worldwide. The hospital is the only tertiary health institution under the care, custody and management of the Ogun State Government. But today, the teaching hospital strategically located in the heart of Sagamu town in such a way that it is the natural point of attraction to accident victims on the Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu-Benin expressways, is confronted with a myriad of challenges. The hospital lacks common X-ray facilities. It was gathered that a patient that needed to have X-ray carried out on him/her has to go to a nearby private hospital whether in the town or an adjoining town before he/she can have it done. Many patients have lost their lives on account of being transported to and fro X-ray centres. Also, the foremost teaching hospital operates in the dark when the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) fails to supply the hospital with power. Health workers attend to patients in the dark with the use of torch lights, mobile phones flash light, candles and lanterns. This is in spite of utility bills which range from N1350 to N2000 paid by each patient on admission. The hospital cannot boast of maintaining electricity supply courtesy PHCN or otherwise for 14 hours in a month. Some facilities within the 25-year old hospital are in a sorry state while some areas are overgrown with weed. The toilets and some buildings are in dilapidated conditions. Speaking with Features Tribune, the President, Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) of the health institution, Dr Peter Abikoye, described the current state of the hospital as one that needed urgent attention. Abikoye hinted that only a quick move by the state government could salvage the hospital from total collapse. He noted that the hospital in terms of infrastructure needed total renovation while all medical facilities must be upgraded. "OOUTH, as of today, lacks facility for X-ray. That is for a patient to undergo X-ray he/she will go to a nearby private hospital. The state of the facility to attend to patients is at its lowest ebb. The only facility is an epileptic radio diagnostic ultrasound machine. "OOUTH lies in blackout if the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) fails as we all know it would and patients have to be attended to in darkness in spite of heavy utility bills being paid by patients on admission. This hospital cannot boast of maintaining electricity supply via PHCN or otherwise for 14 hours continuously in a month. "As if that was not enough, the hospital is strategically located in such a way that it is the natural point of attraction to accident victims on the two of the high ways in the country. The designated trauma centre (designated both by nature and by the pronouncement of the previous government) lacks both the personnel as well as the basic facility for managing head injury patients." The medical doctor said that the association could no longer withstand the psychological trauma of counting the number and records of lives lost on account of inadequate facilities. The association, in a letter dated October 8, 2012 addressed to the state commissioner of Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, expressed concern over the attitude of the state government towards the state of the hospital. The body said that the response of the commissioner to the letter was that funds were not available to address all the challenges confronting the hospital. He also stated that the association had made representation to the government on the payment of 17 months of CONTISS salary arrears and 13 months CONMESS, but observed that the state government had not come up with any commitment. Corroborating his colleague, Dr. Olatunji Tijani, the Vice-President of ARD, said that almost every department in the hospital had been losing accreditation, saying further that training, one of the focal points of the hospital, was missing. "Patients care is paramount to us. Patients on admission are made to pay for electricity and they pay as much as N1,500 everyday under the guise of utility bill. "Most of the departments in this hospital are having partial accreditation. The situation in this hospital is getting worse and no definite commitment has been made by this government," he added. The association attributed the numerous challenges in the hospital to lack of a board of management and even a substantive Chief Medical Director. The association then appealed to the state government under the leadership of Senator Ibikunle Amosun, to salvage the hospital which is on the verge of sinking, saying a stitch in time, saves nine. A patient at the male surgical ward of the hospital, who despite persuasion insisted that his name should not be mentioned, commended the efforts of medical personnel of the hospital for putting in their best, but lamented the absence of some basic facilities in the hospital. He wondered why the state government failed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with a public outfit running the diagnostic centre within the hospital in the interest of patients. The patient said he paid as much as N1,500 everyday for electricity that will serve them between the hours of 12pm and 5.00am when PHCN takes light. In his reaction to various issues raised by the ARD, the Acting Chief Medical Director, OOUTH, Dr. Haroun Ajibode, said the state government had promised to focus on upgrading facilities in the hospital and other health institutions in the state. He also said that government was aware of all the outstanding arrears such as, CONTISS,CONMESS/CONHESS, and February and March 2011 deductions and April 2011 salary inherited from the last administration. The acting CMD said that government had already started offsetting arrears and would pay the rest with the availability. He added that improved equipment and facilities would be purchased as part of government effort to reposition the hospital as a centre of excellence and first state-owned accredited teaching hospital in Nigeria. http://odili.net/news/source/2012/nov/20/603.html

Tragic end in Ogun State: Landlord's son hacks pastor to death Metro Tuesday, November 20, 2012 *Akinyemi Oguntula… cut down in his prime advertisement By DAUD OLATUNJI, Abeokuta If he had exercised restraint instead of complaining about the smoking of Indian hemp by his landlord's son and his friends in his rented apartment, perhaps Akinyemi Oguntula's life would not have ended so tragically. If only he had ignored and endured the inconvenience caused by the smoking of the noxious Indian hemp, he would have been alive today. But, alas, he had paid dearly for daring to challenge the alleged Indian helmp smokers who turned his rented house to a convergence point to indulge their passion. Akinyemi, a pastor and a staff of a cement company, met his untimely end penultimate Sunday shortly after an argument with his landlord'son, Bankole Suderu, over the propriety of the latter bringing his friends to his father's house to smoke the offensive hemp. Pastor, as Akinyemi was more popularly called, was dealt severe machete cuts by his landlord's son. And the man died. It was a tragedy that shook Onigbedu, a community in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State. Vanguard Metro, VM, reliably gathered that many tenants of the bungalow were discomforted with the nuisance act of their landlord's heir but, were afraid to confront him. In fact, it was gathered that, many of them discouraged visits from friends and relations on account of this, preferring instead to host their guests somewhere else. But, on that fateful day, it was learnt that the deceased confronted his landlord, Mr Sunday Soderu, accusing him of allowing Indian hemp smoking individuals into the house who constitute a nuisance to tenants. VM further gathered that upon receiving the complaint by the deceased, the landlord reported him to a factional monarch of the community, Oba Michael Ajibulu, who reportedly summoned Akinyemi to his palace. Few hours after he was summoned by the monarch, the alleged killer stormed the pastor's room and attacked him. It was, however, gathered from an eyewitness,Wasiu Adekunle, that the deceased had cried for help when he was being attacked but ,nobody could rescue him from his alleged killer. "We heard while he was being attacked by his killers, but we could not come out to rescue him. He was shouting help me,please help me, they want to kill me; I am dying. But, after a while, his voice, which initially was loud, faded till we could not hear him again," the eye-witness said. However, VM gathered that, apart from his complaints about the smoking habit of his killers, Pastor Akinyemi, whose wife-to-be is a corps member, was killed because he was reportedly seen as a stumbling block in the Obaship tussle in the community. Two Obas in the village have been at loggerheads over who should exercise authority there. According Wasiu Adekunle, the alleged killers planned to kill Akinyemi so as to intimidate others who are loyal to a rival Oba. "And after they killed him, they made attempts to sweep the matter under the carpet by hiding the remains of the deceased but, some neighbours who had earlier heard the deceased's shout for help reportedly frustrated the plan," he alleged. The deceased's body has been deposited at the Ifo General Hospital's Mortuary. Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Muyiwa Adejobi, said two suspects, who were the landlord and his son, have been arrested. He, however , disclosed that, the Command has commenced an investigation, saying that, upon the completion of investigation, the suspects would be charged to court. http://odili.net/news/source/2012/nov/20/333.html |
Some men are softer than p./u.s./s.y Tuesday, November 20, 2012 Lagos: My wife beat me -Husband by Agency Reporter advertisement A trader, Sunday Olagoke, on Monday pleaded with the Grade B Customary Court, Orile- Agege , Lagos, to dissolve his 16-year-old marriage alleging that his wife maltreated him. The petitioner told the court that he also wanted dissolution based on "threat to life, constant fighting, lack of care and absence of love." He testified in tears that his wife, Christianah, treated him like a slave, ruined his business and did not respect his family. Olagoke said, "My wife does not cook for me, the worst is that she used to beat me whenever I confronted her. She behaves like a man and I was scared of her all through the period we were together. "We had no issue together; we lived like cat and mouse and she eventually left the house a year ago without telling me. "I really suffered in her hands; I was the wife while she was the husband. But I thank God it is now over." "I heard she is now married to another man and I want the court to dissolve the marriage so that I will be free from her bondage." Christianah, however, did not show up in court, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. The Court President, Mr. Joseph Adewusi, told the petitioner to maintain the peace and adjourned the case until November 29, for judgment. |

Lagos: Woman drags hubby to court for inserting pepper into her private part Crime Alert Tuesday, November 20, 2012 advertisement click here Click here to find out more! By Onozure Dania A middle-aged woman, Foluke Olayiwola, has dragged her husband Festus Olayiwola to an Ojo grade A Customary court, for allegedly putting pepper in her private part and also trying to strangulate her. Foluke, a teacher said she met her husband in December 1989, and after they got married, they have being living together until 1996, when her husband started suspecting that she was having affair outside their matrimonial home. She accused him of always beating her up at every slightest provocation and inflicting injury on her face which she showed to the court. She said that whenever Festus sees her discussing with any man, without knowing who the person is, he would always accuse her of sleeping with the man. "Each time I attended our landlord meetings, he would always accused me that I had gone to have sex." Foluke, who resides at No 11, Obadiaya Street, in Ojo area of Lagos, said in 1996, she went to her sister's place and after she returned from the journey, he accused her of having gone to have sex with a man. "After much quarreling, I slept off and in the middle of the night, he put pepper in my vagina and I was feeling hot in my private part. The next day, I ran away to meet my parents and he later came to explain that it was Chinese balm that he put in my vagina. "He continued with his accusation until in June 8, 2008, when he tied my neck with rope at night when I was asleep. Before then, I use to think that it was a dream and whenever I told him about it, he would say it is a dream, not knowing that it was real. Until that fateful day, at exactly 12.30am, when he first tied my neck and I was turning on the bed, thinking that it was a dream. He quickly untied my neck. I looked at the time and saw that it was 12 ;30am in the morning, so I pretended to be sleeping. After sometime, when he thought I had slept deep, he took the rope again and started tying my neck with it, I still pretended to be asleep, as he was still tying my neck, I just opened my eyes and he was shocked. Then, I asked him why he wanted to kill me after all the suffering I have been going through in his house. "He now prostrated on the ground and started begging me, he even asked the children to help him plead with me, to forgive him, that it is the work of Satan. I said in 1996, it was the work of Satan, today, in 2008, it is still the work of Satan." Continuing, Foluke, told the court that a times, when she wakes up, she would find knife on the bed beside her and whenever she asked him, he would say he doesn't know how it got there. "I would call my son that made the bed and he would say he doesn't know. My husband would always claim that his actions were spiritual. I threatened to leave him severally but each time, he would plead that I stay because he cannot cope without me. Even when we relocated to a new compound, he continued with his accusations. The situation degenerated to an extent that he could not pay our son's school fees. I brought him to court because of the continuous threats to my life not just because he cannot take care of me and the children,"she stated. After listening to the petitioner's evidence, the trial president, Bola Giwa, of Ojo grade A Customary Court, adjourned the next hearing of the matter, till December 4 2012, for the respondent, to give his evidence. http://odili.net/news/source/2012/nov/20/322.html |
A top Nigerian cardiologist, based in New York, Dr. Oluyemi Badero, has been named among the top interventional cardiologists in the United States, according to a prominent US rating organization for the medical profession. Castle Connolly, the organisation which publishes distinguished US doctors, has listed Badero among the top US doctors, based in the New York metro area, which includes New York, New Jersey and Connecticut states. The publication, which is the 15th edition and dated 2012, was released recently, reporting that Badero, who earlier had been named among top US cardiologists, is one of the interventional cardiologists to reckon with in the US. Interventional Cardiology is deemed a rarefied specialty in medical practice, and fewer African-Americans and blacks are qualified in that field. Commenting on his listing this year by the Castle Connolly, regarded as eminent among US medical professionals, Dr. Badero said the recognition would further spur him to do more and do better, adding that “I feel highly honoured.” Badero was among a handful of US black doctors and Nigerians on the Castle Connolly. Some of the other Nigerian doctors, who had featured on the list, include Professor Ferdinand Ofodile, Dr Ola Akinboboye and Dr Chukwuma Okadigwe. Badero’s training in Africa was noted in the publication. He graduated with an MBBS in 1984 from the then University of Ife. However, it added that Badero had two residency programmes in the US, both at the State University of New York between 1990 and 1994. It was also highlighted that Badero had two post-residency fellowships at SUNY and Yale, between 1994 and 1998. The publication also noted his three levels of America medical board certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology. The publication stated that the process of selecting the top doctors “begins with the identification of a select pool of board-certified physicians from the total numbers of doctors practicing in a given area.” The process involves a survey of already distinguished and leading physicians and hospital CEO’s and medical directors, who are asked to nominate top doctors on an annual basis. |
shymmex: And what is the correlation between Emeagwali's claims and this thread?Because they are both false. However one is personal, the other is organizational. |
Rossikk: You sound very ignorant. America is a place that has been and remains highly segregated. NOT at the instigation of blacks, but whites. You can only ''COMPETE'' when there's a LEVEL PLAYING FIELD, and if you say there IS, you're even more ignorant than I thought. And 'black only unis' which you scorn out of stupidity, were established in the first pace because of the historical white policy of segregation in education and access to national resources in that sector. So do please go and study the US before opening your mouth to utter uninformed gibberish. You are a buffoon. Chinese and Indians come here and compete at the highest level with whites and you are here yarning ignorance. There is no white segregation in science as of today, got it? The best blacks are those heading places that are multi-ethnic. Anyone cocooning themselves in black-only societies are being mediocre. I strongly hope he belongs to the main society. |
PhysicsQED: The first university was probably in North Africa:Can you condemn the blatantly false claim and stop sitting on the fence? |
shymmex: @OPWhat was bad about Emeagwali making claims? You can make claims but don't make claims that are thoroughly false and will ridicule you. |
dayokanu: There is a National Society of Black Engineer, Black lawyers etcAnything scientific for blacks only is inferior in the USA. Because they cannot compete, they segregate. Hey! Many of the so-called naija profs here are teaching in Black-only unis. |
Founded in 1947, yet they have the brazen effrontery to claim third in Africa and 27th in the world? Yoruba people go kill person with fake claims ooooo!!! |
