PoliticsFlashback: Why Deeper Life Turned Down Jonathan’s Request To Visit Church by adem30(op): 9:54pm On Oct 01, 2018
President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid to ‘worship’ at Deeper Christian Life Ministry during the presidential election campaign hit the rocks as pastorate of the church outrightly turned down his request, DAILY POST has learnt.

It was gathered that President Jonathan, who worshiped in most churches across the country before the March 28 presidential election, was denied entry into Deeper Life, when he wrote authorities of the ministry to inform them of his visit last January.

Jonathan had during one of his visits to Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Abuja, explained why he was embarking on ‘presidential church tour’.
According to him, “Traditionally, we have the State House Chapel where I worship every Sunday. If we do not have the chapel, probably I would have been here one or two times before this time.

“It is only during the Christmas period, maybe two Sundays before Christmas and the Sunday before and after New Year that we sometimes close the chapel, and allow people to participate in their church services and that time, I do go round.

“This year, we have decided that from now onward, until I leave the State House, every last Sunday of the month, I will go to different churches.

“Yes, that is the State House Chapel presided over by a chaplain and from time to time other men and women of God come to preach to us.

“But I feel that it is good for me to go round and continue to appreciate what our brothers and sisters have been doing”.

However, DAILY POST learnt that the Special Adviser to Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abata had on January 22, written the authorities of the church through the office of its spokesman, Pastor Segun Babatope to inform them about his visit but the leadership of the church refused to acknowledge the letter.

According to an insider, when Babatope informed leaders of the church about the development, many of them kicked against it, saying that the ministry is not a platform where politicians come to campaign.

Jonathan was originally billed to visit Deeper Life on February 8 after leaving Redemption Camp, but he had to proceed to the Lord’s Chosen when he discovered the church was not ready to welcome him.

The highly-placed source said the church’s decision to honourably turn down the request was because of how some sections of media misquoted Bishop David Oyedpoe of Winners Chapel during Jonathan’s visit to the church.

Oyedepo was quoted as threatening to open the gate of hell to anybody who campaigned against Jonathan.
The alleged statement triggered social media war as many were lambasting the preacher for using his church to campaign for politicians.

However, Oyedepo denied making such statement.

The source said, “Leadership of the ministry was very careful not to allow politics or politicians dent the image of the church or pastor Kumuyi. The presidency had invited him severally for meetings with the president, but he would wave it aside.

“When Abati wrote the church to inform them about Jonathan’s visit, precisely January 22, the church leaders deliberated upon it and decided to turn it down”.

Asked if Kumuyi was aware of the decision, the insider said, “of course, but he has no final say. Though he founded the church, he does not decide how such thing is being handled. He had to allow leaders of the church to handle it. And when it became obvious that they were not ready to welcome the president, Daddy Kumuyi had to accept their decision”.

It was gathered that the president had to leave Redemption Camp for Rev. Lazarus Mouka’s Lords Chosen in Ijesha when he discovered the church was not ready to welcome him.

In Chosen, he warned politicians against using church to campaign.

The President said, “I would not say much because this is not a good period for those of us who are contesting for election to talk so much in church. I do not want to be accused of coming to campaign in churches because I believe that we should not campaign in churches. We may discuss with people but not to use the platform of the church to campaign”.

Breaking: Ben Bruce withdraws from senatorial race

The commonsense Senator, Ben Murray Bruce, has withdrawn his ambition to return to the Senate for a second term in 2019.

The Senator abandoned his ambition to represent the Bayelsa East Senatorial District following widespread rejection of his candidacy by the stakeholders of the district.

In a letter written on the eve of the senatorial primaries of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Bruce thanked his district for giving him the opportunity to serve.

The letter said: “I thank God and the good people of Brass, Bayelsa East Senatorial District who offered me the golden opportunity four years ago to represent them and the state in the Senate, Nigeria’s highest lawmaking chamber.

“It is without doubt that I have tried to discharge my duties as a legislator and representative of my people creditably to the best of my ability so far.

“My voice has been very loud on the issues that matter to our people and our country at all time.

“My support to our party, my people and state government is unquestionable. I am humbled that the national leadership of my party supported by the State chapter in appreciation of my efforts offered to support my reelection to the senate to continue my service.

“I have also intensified consultations in the last couple of week in the course of which I have come to realize an existing local rotational arrangement of over 20 years beginning with the late Great Chief Melford Okilo, by which arrangement the Senatorial seat rotates per local government area among the three councils for four years in the Senatorial District.

“Even with the support of my party at the National and state levels with the full backing of my state government and leadership, as a man of honour interested in the well-being of my people, I hereby announce my withdrawal from the Senatorial race.

“I do not want whatever reason to appear to have used my privileged position and influence to do anything other than the well-being and the stability and the good of the people.

“I am in all of these for the people, not for myself.

“Once again, I thank the former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebelo Jonathan, the National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, my colleagues in the Senate and Governor of Bayelsa State, the Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson for their support and encouragement.

“I also thank the leadership of my Senatorial District and state, for being there for me.

“I thank specially the people of my constituency for their trust and confidence in me to serve and represent them in the Senate.

“By trusting me with this mandate, I have come to know them and our people even better, an experience I will never forget for the rest of my life.

“I am indeed grateful to my darling wife, my children, and other members of my family for their support and prayers. I appreciate the efforts of my hardworking campaign staff for their support and dedication.

“Again, I thank the leadership of the party for their continuing support. I also assured the party of my availability and readiness to serve at any capacity when the opportunity comes”.

Forget Your Senatorial Ambition, Oyun Youths Tell Gov. Ahmed

Youths in Oyun local government area of Kwara State have told Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to forget his senatorial ambition, stressing that Senator Rafiu Ibrahim remains their preferred candidate for the Kwara South senatorial seat in 2019.

Governor Ahmed had on Monday, 24 September, 2018 visited Oyun to solicit the support of stakeholders and party faithful for his senatorial ambition ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary elections. But the governor was left bewildered as the chants of 'Sai Rafiu' 'Rafiu Leekansi' rented the air.

The Oyun youths pleaded the governor to shelve his ambition and support the re-election bid of Senator Rafiu, whom they said has performed creditably well in the Senate since he got there in 2015. They further appealed to the governor to prevail on the party's leadership that Dr Rafiu be given the PDP ticket.

Both Ahmed and Senator Rafiu are vying for PDP ticket for Kwara South senatorial seat in the 2019 general elections. The lawmaker is seeking a return to the Upper chamber of the National Assembly.

For his outstanding performance in the Senate in the last three years - delivering quality representation and facilitating developmental projects to Kwara South - Senator Rafiu's re-election bid has received massive support and endorsements from stakeholders within and outside Kwara South including traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth and women groups.

lackren:
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) says there is an alleged plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig the Osun rerun election.

INEC had declared the governorship election held Saturday inconclusive and subsequently fixed Thursday for a rerun.

The rerun will take place across seven polling units in four local government areas (LGAs) of the state.

CUPP, in a statement issued on Monday by Ikenga Ugochinyere, its spokesman, said INEC has refused to make public the list of people with permanent voter cards in the affected LGAs because it plans to “to announce a fictitious figure of uncollected” PVCs.

This coalition says the endgame of the plot is to release the PVCs to “imported voters read more
