jerrypeacelinks:
Visa delayed AGAIN at the Lagos Embassy.

It happened like a mirage
. Though VO was sharing BLUE PAPER like cabin biscuit to all the guys before me. But truth is, they weren't responding fine and when it got to my turn, I approached him smiling. Though I am yet to explain what happened to me cos I was really balling like it was hot...

VO: Hello good morning.
Me: Good morning Sir? How was your night.
VO: Am fine thank you. Pass me your passport and i-20.
Me: Here it is. (Passed it).
VO: So where are you going to?
Me: I am going to TAMUK, Texas to pursue my masters degree in Mathematics and Statistics with a concentration in Statistical Analytics, Computing and Modelling.
VO: okay? How many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to 3 schools. TAMUK, Indiana University and McNesse State University.
VO: so why did you choose TAMUK over Indiana?
Me: TAMUK is a research University and has great research facilities which include the Javelina Algebra Lab which is the computer classroom for my department and the James C. Jeernigan Library which is one of the largest libraries in Texas and I believe having access to such research facilities will be a great boost as it will broaden my academic horizons.
VO: Nodding his head like agama lizard.
Me: (continued) also, in my quest to know more about the school, I downloaded the official school's app which keeps me up to date with happenings in the school.
In addition to this, I developed a good relationship with Professor.... (VO cuts in).
VO: When did you graduate?
Me: November 2011.
VO: What is your highest qualification?
Me: I hold a bachelor's in Computer Science.
VO: So since after school, what have you been doing?
Me: After school, I served and then got a job at xyz bank as a Service Executive. I am an ATM custodian and my roles are blablabla...

VO: nods his head again and ask So why masters?
Me: Sorry?
VO: I said, why do you wanna pursue a masters?
Me: Well, the prospects and opportunities for this course are extremely high in Nigeria and their is a lack of professionals...
VO cuts in: What do you mean by prospects?
Me: Job prospects.
VO: Oh? Okay?
Me (continues): For example, big data and analytics which is one of the courses I will study at TAMUK is relatively new here in Nigeria and experts in the field are hard to source.
(VO again nodding continuously like agama)
Me (continued). Companies here in Nigeria who need the services of big data analysts have no other choice but to hire expatriate professionals from other technologically advanced countries like the US....

VO now nodding harder and harder..

Me: (now feeling like a don jazzy singing ogbeni feli feli continues)...and there is the need to..... (I went blank. Mind you, i never crammed this o. I was flowing and VO was nodding his head and all of a sudden I forgot what I was saying entirely and where i was drivinf at.)

VO was still nodding his head and looking at me ooooo and with the expression in his face, was like, hey? Whatsup nah? Continue, am enjoying the gist...

Me: (I opened my mouth to talk, but nothing came out. Hey? I was doomed....) huh

VO: angry

Me: (stammering....) Am sorry sir....

VO: Just calm down. Take your time.

Me: (Just like Danfo wey dey push down a hill I pick up).... and studying this course will equip me with the analytical and technical skills needed to flourish as a data analyst and will help me fill the gap for a lack of indigenous big data analysts in my country.

VO: (indifferent) Have you travel out of the country before?
Me: No. I have not had any need to.
VO: Who is your sponsor?
Me: My dad.
VO: What does he do?
Me: he is into haulage, supply and distribution of petroleum products. He also owns petrol stations here in Lagos and Aba angry

VO: Are you married?
Me: No, but am engaged.

VO: brings out the devilish love letter from the devil's mailbag)... Am sorry you do not qualify....

Me: (goes deaf)... but summoned courage to ask, BUT WHAT WENT WRONG THIS TIME? (I expected him to say that yeye paper will explain but he said something else).

VO; Am sorry, you failed to convince me you are a genuine student. angry

Me: angry thank you.
VO: Have a nice day grin

Without being told, I know I screwed up when I off like say them press my remote from village....

All the same, I wish my people well... Mercybliss, I will sincerely miss u from the depth of my heart. @Tosin baba, represent us well. Remember you are our TAMUK course rep. @iPhy and @Mayorboi, @ikenna omo Igbo, @ojelade am so sorry I fall una hands big time this second attempt. No doubt it seems my first was even better. I wish you guys a wonderful trip to the States. You guys have been my family here. If God tarries, I will join you guys in due course maybe not now.

@lagosismyhome, @walspring, @my fellow Javelina, and all @Nairalanders you guys are the best.

(I just feel like crying right now but I am a strong man, why shall I cry? embarassed cry
baba sorry about ur delay. the only thing I saw wrong in this was that u crammed and forgot. I think he expects that as a postgraduate student, you should be able to explain ur reasons well enough. from ur transcript,u cud see he asked u a similar question twice and blanking at the second attempt gave hidm a clue u memorised everything. on ur next and hopefully last attempt. try and give urself time to really understand ur course. write it out into plain paper and try to paraphrase into different statements, find at least 2 to 3 ways to explain the same thing. that way he knows u understand what u saying and not just pouring out what u crammed. I wish u the best bro. sorry about the delay

Beeni ooo. Make i tell you something bro.

I was looking at my parents pictures smiling the other day when i saw twood comment about "nigerians are as dishonest and fraudulent". I looked at my parents picture again and this thought came saying if what your parents you adore so much are as dishonest and fraudulent? The thought just flashed through my mind.

That is to show you how words can go a long way but then i remembered he's also nigerian with family and i concluded in my heart that then " His family are also as dishonest and fraudulent" if what he's saying about Nigerians are true
this comment is uncalled for. he did not specify ur family or anyone. u sud check ursef for reasoning that way. is it a lie that many Nigerians are fraudulent. if u know u are not fraudulent and dishonest then simply ignore , I don't see a reason why twoods matter sud cause issues like this. no doubt we have very truthful Nigerians but it still doesn't mean we don't have the dishonest ones. like a Yoruba adage says" the bad ones have spoilt the good ones". that is the reality we face. God help us all. am sorry if u feel insulted by my comment

As for all the backlash I got for withholding the name of the School earlier, I was confident by now I'd get couple of responses after disclosing the name of the "bleep" school.
u need to be patient when dealing with people especially those you don't know. have u tried calling the admissions office. its better calling in most cases cos most times they might have a whole lot of applications to deal with. and secondly no one is stationed here for you, we are all here assisting each other. the least u can do is to be modest in the way u address peeps. call them especially if its post graduate studies

Tis almost 3 months and I'm yet to get a response from the school I applied to. I'm this close to being tired of calling and mailing...
there are many reasons why u are being asked to mention the school.
1.there cud be someone in the thread who has applied to the same school and in the same scenario as u.
2. the gurus cud actually have an idea about the school admissions process
3. there cud also be someone who currently studies in the school and cud give first hand info abt the process.
in all honesty. there are over three thousand schools in the states and keeping the name of the school makes it so difficult for anyone who is willing to help.

Getting a supervisor is one thing, meeting the admission minimum requirement is another and comparing your application package with other applicants is another. All these go into assessments and selection of highly competitive students for a department.

Getting a supervisor is ONLY one part of the rigorous admission process. If the university request that you get one prior to applying, it applicable to every applicant and it is no guarantee that you will be admitted. You application package( transcripts,GPA/average point, Letter of intent, references, research interest etc) will have to distinguish you as you are also competing with different applicants from various part of the world with same interest as yours. Nothing is Guaranteed untill you have been offered admission.
thanks for the comment. but nawa for this supervisors then. why tell someone to apply when u know they might not be accepted. person go come waste app fee. its well sha. i read some departments return app fee for admitted students

greetings everyone, i av been getting conflicting reports here regarding getting supervisors and all. i saw from a university depaermental website that admissions depends on you getting supervisor and the supervisor willing to offer u space. if this is the case, is it still possible to get rejected despite meeting this criteria. anyone sud kindly explain cos a lot of effort is required to get supervisors and if some are saying with facts that these doesnt always guarantee admissions, isnt it advisable not to bother doing tht or channeling ur resources into other parrs of the application?

Whoever application fee is an issue to, shouldn't even dream about studying in US. Not even up to the compulsory SEVIS fee of $200.
i feel your opinion is myopic. i can pick free schools to increase the amount of schools i will apply to. it doesnt necessarily mean i cant study in the US.

well to me applying to more than enough schools simply means one doesn't know what one wants and when that happens you've lost the focus/aim of applying.
are you applying for the fear of rejection ?
or they all have what you're looking for ?
at the end of the day you choose one? imagine making a decision to chose 1 from amongst 10 schools if he/she gets accepted to all
since you don't have the power to know if u will he accepted then there's no limit to the amount of schools you should apply to. it doesn't mean the person has lost aim. he is simply increasing his chances of getting admitted. I believe that's the purpose of the so called "safe schools".

everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. on the contrary if we really take a deep look at our countries and compare with many other countries who are not as religiously inclined as we are. we realise we are far from where we should be. can we call politicians or public office holders who say prayers before holding meetings where they usurp our funds religious?. the reality is that if u find yourself in this thread, its either u have aspirations to leave the country or u want someone u care about to leave. if am to get twoods right, maybe he was saying if we channeled some of the energies we put into prayers into actually doing something productive, then our country wud be better than it is. prayer is key because we are religious but hardwork is also as important as prayer.even the bible says the same in james 2vs 14

lolz its the same here in cyprus. the students are not really into the grades since their economy has privisions for them so a few of them that are actually intelligent and also care about grades are really loved by the professors and encouraged to go for doctorate degrees.

Bro, I empathize with you and I know how it feels. In my final year in the University, a course i had a B was turned to a C. How do i know i had a B you may ask? The course was a 300 level course and the result was on my portal and i printed it out. With this printed copy i had an evidence which i use to complain to the department severally. To cut the long story short, guess what i was told? I was told i already had a first class degree why should i still bother over a grade that was changed and it makes little difference in my CGPA. Moreover, from my transcript i never had a C, so at least it shows the department is very strict with marks. Do you know the difference of 0.01 costs me from being the Best Graduating student in the school? The Best graduating student's CGPA was higher than mine with 0.01.

This is just to give an insight on what is happening in our institutions. All said, i was asked to do my MSc in that same school, me? Only if they know the resentment i hold against them.

Bro, never give up, you don't have to prove anything to anyone and with God by your side your best is yet to come.

Grades alone cannot define your future but Grace can. Do your best, this American Dream must be achieved.

Sorry for the long epistle, I've never said all these to anyone.
thanks for the encouragement. i had gotten over that since and have gone up to have amazing results afterwards. i only made my situation know to point out a misconception of someone not seeing a reason y a person sud go for another undergraduate degree.

My good friend dropped from 2.1 to 2.2. Was a small margin and it took it down to less than 3.5. She wasn't the only one. We all tabled our cases and she told me hers was corrected. I was happy for her, imagine carying a 2.2 because of some miscalculations.

And no, they didnt dash them marks, the manual calculation showed the true cgpa. I guess they took their own seriously because of the impact. I had a diff of 0.04 less my cgpa and I am not very okay with it.

So poster, why didnt your HOD assist resolve yours? Did you say your lecturer introduced that software? Because that's not what I heard.
the software if i am really correct started with my set in the faculty of education. before 2007/2008. results were calculated manually by the course adviser. but it changed for us. if u ever had of prof temi busari.who died in education. she was the dean who introduced that software for results calculation.

You dont need to prove anything to anyone, as long as you are sure of what you are saying. Leave people who are quick to rain abuse on others for nothing, forgetting they need to err on the side of caution when they are in doubt.

I am still asking, why did you accept something you know will hinder your academic planshuh Did your parents/guardian not contest this?
God bless u. i did then and i went with my uncle in 2009 and i was assured it was going to be rectified my cpga dropped to 2.38/5.0 and that it will reflect in the convocation of 2008/2009 which will be done in jan 2010. i went for service just for me to call my friend to check the convocation list which bought out my name but no rectification was done. if only two of the four courses . che 101 (4 units) and che 102 (2 units) which i didnt register for or even sat for cause İ was direct entry was removed then i wud av entered 2.40. i still went back after my service and applied for pgd in education. i was not admitted and by that time, the dean of education (prof busari) who knew my case had died and by 2011 after going up and down. the new hod for science and tech edu siad she had never had of my case. i gave up at that point and thank God for my parents encouraged me to do another undergraduate. it was not as if i didnt fight. i just chased a better dream and thank God it turned out well. its just a pity people who dont know anything about unilag all come out here talking. the days of ibidapo obe when course form was by paper and results were in broadsheets.

I find this very hard to believe. Except you graduated in like year 2000-2003 o. That kind of thing can't happen in Unilag. What happened to CITS that your department HOD would have his or her own software. Oh so there's even a software to use, meaning you probably graduated between 2008 and this year. And CITS was functional then, post ume was even computer based. So in Education an HOD used software to spoil your CGPA and you didn't go to DSA or Senate or even the CITS. You're a joker sir. Sell another story. They changed 2:2 to third class for you and you're telling us cool story here.lol. Don't spoil Unilag's reputation o biko. People would start thinking HODs can make their own software to calculate GPA for them. HODs don't even record anything, the lecturers submit the result to the department and the department takes the results to the senate for approval. Mistakes like that can only come from CITS and it can't be that bad or else it'll affect the whole department in which case it'll be resolved. So accept your Grade and don't blame Software sir.
why i like people like you is that u always think people are lying when u havent heard of such a case before, well i graduated in 2008. chemistry education. you dont know me and i had no reason to put up the story. i only did when someone made mention of why someone had to do a second undergraduate. well i did a second undergraduate. did exceptionally well and still doin fine till today. but saying i sud accept my grades and not blame the dept. i wont take that from u. if u feel am lying. contact me personally and İ will show u my transcript and u will have to come to the thread and apoligize cos u clearly said words u knew nothing about

You mean about 4 courses you didn't registered for in a semester your departmental lecturer gave you E and your course adviser used it to process your result, then your HOD and your faculty dean signed it, all those profs for senate sat down together approved it?

Ha! Ha!! Ha!!! Something is not right at all.

Are you serious or you are kidding or you fomulated this theory? because even waec exam if you didn't go for a single subject, waec won't put F but instead write absent in front of the subject.

It is not possible to get E in about 4 courses you didn't registered for because the course form your submitted is what will be used to process your semester result and I find it hard to believe that what is not on the course form that you submitted was recorded for you as E..

Lemme ask are you a fan or member of APC. huh

Lastly if I may ask, what is the name of that your university and department who recorded E for you in about 4 courses you didn't registered for in a semester because I need to blow their whistle gringringrin
maybe because God wanted a better life for me. i did direct entry to enter the program. chemistry education unilag and in my final year. my then departmental hod (dr busari may her soul rip) introduced a software for results calculation and as unlucky as i cud get. thw software operator went to record year 1 courses which i didnt do for me and put E along with a year four course which i did and scored C then recorded as F. u cud say my hometown witches followed me well. lolx but thank God cos everything in life has a reason for happening
