By now, there are some comments you shouldn't be replying. Concentrate on those that have offered you ideas on how to start. Anyone blasting you by telling you how he or she struggled before making it, is actually the one feeling self-entitled. Trust me, life is not black and white. You just need to appreciate yourself more, change your approach and perception and watch the others will follow suit. Instead of offering you advice, they would love to work with you. Boast about your skills and package your self better. For example, in Lagos, tailoring is no longer called or viewed by that name; they call it fashion design and a lot of folks are into that field. Buzz me when you are free. I'll link you to other writers.

Thanks for the great words and taking the time to assist, bro. It means a lot.

I just sent you an email. Thank you.

Bro , he doesn't need a PC to get started and what happened to the internet sub he uses to browse NL daily ...STOP MAKING EXCUSES ON HIS BEHALF.

The first thing I noticed while reading his post was the fact that he writes well and I'm sure he doesn't even know he could earn from it .

My advice to you is this

- DON'T start a blog with the hope to earn from it , you might not even earn up to $10 in a year ....There are so many people looking for good writers daily here on NL...there was a guy in the business section that writes 1,500 words articles for 250 naira a while back...the last time I contacted him he told me he now charges 1K / 1,500 words now( he even told me he had up to 15 articles to write so he politely told me he didn't have the time )

- Download the wordpress app from playstore and open a free blog, write 5 posts about anything that comes to your mind ...then come back to NL and open a thread to tell us that you write articles and don't be greedy by charging too high for starters..

- find a way to guest post on good blogs in naija and let there be an option to contact you.

Aeker ... see I'm going to tell you what I was told during service and I hope you take it .

[bLIFE IS A PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY...don't expect anyone to hand anything to you

Those lamenting and sympathizing with you have nothing to offer you ...listen to those chastising you or better still ask them how they did it
Thanks for the kind words, bro.

I especially like the emboldened. Those are great words.

Actually, I'm a writer. I have been since I was young. It's just that I haven't taken freelancing as seriously as I should. Had a Fiverr account but it got blocked mid this year. Opened another yesterday and am about to see how far it gets me.

Thanks.

Op, keep on. A few people have identified one of your key skills for you, that's writing. You should check inwards and see how you can develop that. What relationship do you have with your parents, do they give you advices. Are they concerned about your progress. If yes, pls do not move anywhere if you can't g enough support where you are going. Though, I will advice you find a mate and find an apartment since you are the first child. If you cannot afford that at the moment, when you have saved enough, you should do that. I have friends who perhaps could have leveraged on the support of their parents but had this silly self made, move out of your parents house to be successful mentality. Today, he is still jobless, living everyday like that when there is perhaps a man that can guide him through life. One last thing there is no such discovery than self discovery. Man know yourself and what has worked for you. Check through your past successes, how did it come, how it happened. There in you will have answers

Great words from a wise man.

Thank you so much for highlighting these.

I will keep them in mind.

Herein lies the problem. U need to ditch that idea of wearing suit and sitting in an office. There are a million things u can do to earn income. Academic writing, what does that even mean What u need is courage. U need to summon courage to move ahead. Forget corporate white collar jobhunting

I'm thinking in this direction presently. Think I've had enough of roaming the streets for jobs.

However, academic writing is quite helpful, especially for individuals like me who lack startup capital for business. I've been writing for a while now, so I try to venture into different industries.

That's great but telling him $500/month wouldn't help him mentally in the job. You also need to write well to get bids. You also need a Payoneer or Paypal account which is the easy part. 200-300$/month should be his target now.

Thanks for his, bro.

I know what your story feels like. I still do but not with the disdain I got in that first 18 months without a job at home. If I could trade the mental depression I got then with some physical permanent pain, I'd done so. You wonder how that nice man you call dad became a... I moved out to help my sanity.

The thing is, this world is not fair. What you have here is random and chaotic. It is not even about how much you work or how smart you are or how much you pray(yes, look around) but random favor or connection. For me, sanity is my number one priority. In 100 years time all these will be no more.

True talk, bro. You get the picture.

Do you have accounts with the websites that I mentioned earlier? And who told you that writing jobs are not consistent? Perhaps, you know something that I don't know?

I had an almost 2 years old Fiverr account. Got closed sometime in May or so. I had like 3 clients at the time. They were repeat customers, but that was about it. Getting other jobs was difficult. Maybe it was because I was using a Nigerian IP address at the time. At least, that was what some guys attributed the issue to. Barely made $95 per month.

Could be that I was doing the bidding wrongly. Whatever it was, I just couldn't get it right. Unfortunately.

Dust your laptop and he'd over to fiverr or any of those freelancing websites and help yourself.

Yes, boss. You can contact me whenever. I'd PM you my phone number so we can communicate via WhatsApp. Thanks.

I have steady power supply, sharp and responsive laptop, and enjoy internet connection 24/7. I doubt there'd be any issue with those.

Thanks.

Bros you are not lazy, don't be discourage. search on family section, there is this guy, his moniker is phonetik or close to it, he teaches phonics as regards to pronunciations. learn them n reach out to parents n tell them you can teach their ward phonics at home, most parents wants their kids to flow in that regard, I tell you it will sell. just package yourself well n it must sell. you can start with small amount per child. It is well.

Thanks for the expedient suggestions, Graxie. I find your words quite encouraging.

Thanks again.

This is the lot of 80% of fresh naija graduates.

Most escape it either by luck, wit or divine design.
It's worse If you don't have older siblings who are doing well and whom you can turn to for small change time to time.

I can see you can fairly write and with a good imagination.
Why don't you do a tour of Advertising agencies in Lagos and hunt for a placement as an in house writer?

You can start from there...or you send your CV to amiloaded, the newest blogger.

True talk, and thanks for the tips, bro.

My case is even worse. I'm the first of six. So there's no one to turn to. But that doesn't deter me at all.

However, I'm not based in Lagos. That notwithstanding, I'll explore the second option.

Thanks.

You are a good writer. You can make at least $500 monthly freelancing at home.

Read through the pages I pasted for more info. All you need is there. You don't need to pay a dime to anyone.

Thanks for drawing my attention to this, bro.

Actually, I have been writing freelance for a while now. I was on Fiverr for about two years. Unfortunately, I had just three repeat customers who kept coming back for more. Whether it was down to my using a Nigerian IP, I'm not sure. Think my highest earning in a month was about $95.

They closed the account sometime this year. I haven't tried opening another. But I would on your recommendation.

Thanks.

A word of warning bro...

For the sake of your time, if your intent to get a blog is to substitute it for a job as a means of making money, please have a rethink.

Blogging is not an investment that can yield you anything worthwhile within a year.

Thanks, bro.

I write articles, so I understand your POV. I only intend to use it as a means for earning passive income. Not much else. That's why I keep spreading my tentacles.

im not a graduate yet but then I presume you're meant to be a graduate to make a difference. What have you done to garner money ? I mean occupying yourself with any work that can bring money . If possible , leave your comfort zone , your parent house ... Since you're eating food everyday, you'll be accustomed to the routine in your home and environment . If it's teaching you're able to find in any reputable school ; do it to garner money . You can't be idle afterall ...you're a man !

Wise words, bro. Thank you.

I'm currently making arrangements to leave my parents' house for good. But for as much as I want to leave, I do not want to jump onto a life of uncertainty so hastily. I've made contacts and am willing to move to any state for a teaching job or just any sort. I have been moving places to see if things could change, all to no avail.

I'm really trying. But lack of funds means that I am unlikely to cover as much distance as I should.

Will keep trying. Thanks.

Travel to the north and import foods like yam, cucumber, onions, beans or something else and sell in Lagos.
