you thought ankara was hot. check out KHANGA the “KHANGA” or kanga or lesso is a traditional east African cotton printed fabric used by women as wraps. The fabric is named after the noisy, sociable Guinea fowl. The traditional wear is mostly associated with coastal communities and it serves as an apron or a decorative wrapper in 'kitenge' outfits.Just like any other clothing, khanga designs have evolved and are now available in various patterns such as fruits, abstract designs, silhouettes and more recently subtle designs like stripes. One can have a tailor design anything from a khanga piece for instance; a halter dress, wrap top, two piece tube dress or off-the-shoulder top.The best thing about the khanga is that one can make their own outfit, especially in cases when one is in dire need of an elaborate dress for a festive function. Here is a tip on how to get creative with your Khanga. • For an off-the-shoulder to mid-thigh top, fold the khanga into a triangle then using pins, pin it from the shoulder where it falls off to join the ends. • If long enough, it can be worn as a dress, if not, pair up with elegant pair of trousers.
