Culture / Re: Yorubas Are The Most Educated Tribe In Nigeria by africhika(f): 9:03pm On May 29, 2011
according to this study from the 2008 nigerian demographic and healthy survey, IGBOS are the most educated, including their females
(as posted on the bbc website)

_________

"Female literacy is seen as the key to raising living standards for the next generation. For example, a newborn child is far likelier to survive if its mother is well-educated. In Nigeria we see a stark contrast between the mainly Muslim north and the Christian and animist south. In some northern states less than 5% of women can read and write, whereas in some Igbo areas more than 90% are literate." BBC

You know I talked abt this last week with a friend.

Ihu na anya. To See clearly with the eyes.
If I'm right,in the olden days one thinks of courtship and marriage with the "eyes" only and infact whatever one"sees" after many investigations could make or mar an alter bound courtship.here goes:
Parents search for spouses for their kids.
They observe and watch the person for years(some start from birth)
For females:your waist is considered(the broader the better),your dance steps, the way u balance your water pot, your cooking, your height, cleaning abilities etc.
For males:your farm harvest(cocoyam, cassava, yam sizes),the size of game u bring home, palm wine tapping and general climbing strenght, height, strenght etc.

Both parties are also watched and investigated for gene-related diseases, generational curse etc.Marriage wud only take place when the almighty "eyes" of both families, relatives and communities concerned have done enough roving and come out satisfied hence the proverb "anya na ebu onu uzo eri" . . .
thanks for this thorough explanation

Food / Forbidden Foods? by africhika(f): 9:33pm On May 26, 2011
My dad recently told me that his people (meaning the entire village and most of the local govt) don't eat coco yam. He refused to tell me why. But after my persistent interrogation, he finally admitted that coco yam is associated with one of the traditional idols. So, he will never eat it--I was surprised

What "forbidden foods" do you know of?

BUT, on the other hand-----9ja men like long hair!!!!!!
one lady at my church has short, natural hair. her fiance (recently moved from 9ja) told her that she needs to "do something with her hair, because she can't be looking like a man." what nonsense! now, she wears weave.
Culture / Re: ***hmmmm Nigeria Women*** by africhika(f): 4:33pm On May 19, 2011
LOL!!!!!!!
kennyman, i do agree that 9ja women wear toooooooooooo much weave. it's ridiculous the amount of weave on their heads.
at my university here in atlanta, the 9ja girls were always ridiculed by the african americans because of the bad weave.

on a recent visit to naija, i was shocked at the amount of weave.

i dont wear weave. and as soon as i landed in 9ja, pple kept asking me, "what is wrong? why don't u wear weave-on?"

oh, well, hopefully more 9ja woman can learn to appreciate the hair god gave them. look at s. africans, many of them don't wear weave. most of my 9ja friends would never be caught dead without their weave. in a group of african women, you can ALWAYS spot out the 9jas with the fake hair. na wa oh
