Talking of wishful thinking, there's something called programming by wishful thinking in TDD. So, wishful thinking isn't so bad.
About how we get along, what other choice do we have? It's either we blow via tech or blow via tech. I don't mean creativity by saying wishful thinking I meant procrastinating, and feeling accomplished because it has been played out in one's head |

All4good: Coding is challenging (write, debug and run) and being able to sell your skill for the right price is increasingly tougher these days so it's easy to be demotivated. Mentors have always adviced that it is best practice to have a personal project you would be developing with what you are learning. This will help you stay focused on what languages you need to achieve a set goal. Rather than jumping from learning one language after another. Absolutely |

Before I started coding I don't fancy music. these days it's Seyi vibez, Teni, john drille, and other non-mainstream artists that do the trick for me with their vibe jams, Coding is hard with idiotic bugs that get solved sub-consciously while doing anything else but coding . How do relax and kill the deadline tension . The main issue with anything worth doing is productivity, the mind has a way of making you feel good about wanting to do something like you've actually done that thing, it's really funny, it's called wishful thinking a fundamental problem we all have, How many times have you thought about doing something how many times have you actually done that thing on time, This is actually one of the problems we have when giving the opportunity to be able to work from home. All of us want a remote job, How many of us have the discipline, focus, and resourcefulness to actually get along. There is no solution to that problem regardless of how many self-help videos you watch on youtube, the only solution is to actually do that stuff now no matter how small it is, as you will have guess I am not a good writer but I am learning, no be only code we go dey write nha. Grandlord: There are two types of programmers.
1) The ones who learn frameworks just enough to whip up an application. These ones are standing on the shoulders of the actual engineers because they rely on libraries, APIs and frameworks built by the engineers.
2) The actual software engineers who have a deep grasp of the concepts of algorithms, data structures, system design, architecture, design patterns etc. These ones are the programmer's programmer
Any self-taught programmer ambitious and curious enough, can always go from being the former to attaining the level of the later.
A CS graduate is expected to be an engineer already. He can easily learn frameworks if needed.
Just have a roadmap that shows where you're going and follow through with it. You can be the first guy and start earning some bucks but never ever stop there. Go deeper. Tech is fast changing and what's trending today might be outdated tomorrow. But the core fundamentals never change. Where did this write up come from, thumbs up man. Where u dey now no.1 or no.2 |

seunoni34: How can you say mongodb is not used in production? This is a very ignorant and misleading statement. Java /c# is not even in the top 5 most used languages as at current. Javascript/nodejs still tops the list.. Alongsides python, php, golang, rust and ruby on rails.. The only companies that still use java/c# are older enterprise companies with legacy codebases. Even at that some are alr3sdy moving to kotlin or exploring other newer and better technologies. There's nothing java/c# can do now that golang doesn't do better. Go handles concurrency with ease (with Goroutines) I don't know which linkedin/indeed that you're doing your job search o.
I work for a fintech and they use mongodb and nodejs extensively in production. My last company was a top ecommerce and they used node.js in nearly 70% of their microservices.
I'm surprised you're advising people to learn skills and you failed to mention cloud skills (aws, gcp), containerized architectures like docker and container services like ecs and kubernetes...
Also DSA are very necessary and important to get a job in this very day and time. Every company I've interviewed for (both home and abroad) required me to take coding tests on Codility/hackerrank in their early stages.
You really need to do a lot of research yourself.. Don't say what you don't know. Nice one boss, what u wrote is d diff btw swe and a coder, I think he is just advocating for d fastest way a junior dev can start making money through development of simple scripts and customization or creation of platform codes |

Sergey brin dropped out of a PhD in computer science to build google. Google was even a PhD project before they decided to make it a business. Those guys were seniors both in practical and academics and as of then no stack overflow or anything to ask any questions. Pure super coding. JavaScript was just a year old. Most things had to be done in C, C++ and assembly. Yeah, he is no noob. But was he a senior dev, what's does dat even means, anyways no p, there is no need to argue but it's not every app that would be used by up to 1k concurrent users not to talk of millions, it's like telling a PHP script dev that wants to do something to learn system designs before building that thing. |

valzey: I don't think you understand the importance of system design and architecture. It's fine trying to build a social media app as a personal project, but always keep your mind open for what you don't know. There's difference between an app that 100 persons use and what 100,000 people use. You can't get that knowledge on your own.
I've seen people on this platform saying they can build Facebook. I see that as a sign of ignorance because the person clearly doesn't understand the difference between creating an app on localhost for himself and creating for the world to use.
Can you show any at some point u would realize that u need to understand what ur codes run on and how to make it highly available to clients with low latency, and that shouldn't not stop someone from creating something, how I wish we could discuss this in length. Over engineering doesn't solve any problem, the goal should always be to move quick. That's my opinion though. |
Programming › Re: For Developers Especially Beginners And Junior Developers. by africonn: 11:41am On Apr 17, 2021 |
valzey: There's this trend I've noticed with new developers where
They learn to code, build a few sites and suddenly want to be an entrepreneur. I see that as crazy. You don't have any experience about design systems and architecture and haven't worked on a real job to at least gain a tiny bit of experience so you don't make obvious mistakes.
They build a few sites, I'll admit that some are beautiful and post the links here for us to admire and encourage them. That's ok but what's more important at that level is code reviews, your site may be fine but your code would be poorly written with bad support for maintenance.
They learn about backend, follow a few tutorials though some may do it on their own but suddenly they want to make Facebook. All I can say here is LOL.
They learn to code but do not care about unit testing. The solution is obvious.
They discover optimisation techniques and overuse them. Just as there's premature ejaculation, there's also premature optimisation.
They do a few projects on their laptops and not care about source control. You must learn to use git PERIOD.
They think that getting jobs is easy, no my friends it isn't, sometimes you have to work with a messed up startup that's just as bad as a slave owner just to add years of experience in your resume.
They do not develop their problem solving skills, it's not easy but you can check out hackerrank and try their beginner problems to get acquainted.
They learn their stack superficially, I understand that it's not easy to go deeply in any stack but it's important. There's this interview I had regarding react, they asked questions in a non react way but expect you to respond in a react way. Some answers included Context API, Refs and design patterns.
They just stop at writing code. You should always try to be better than yesterday. Check out the SOLID principles and try to apply them to your projects, it'll make life easier for you especially during interviews and code maintenance.
The summary is know your level, develop a plan to improve and implement the plan. Never ever think you have arrived.
My advice is that try not to do these things.
Senior Devs in the community can contribute and I can update the list. I guess Zuckerberg was a senior developer when he wrote the earliest version of havard connection, or page and Sergey when they wrote their search engine |

The market is tough and harsh, it doesn't give a damn about anyone's over-bloated self-ego and wishful thinking which I believe we all suffer from. I haven't gotten anywhere but here are the things, I am working on to become better in the field. Staying in African as a dev should be an extra motivation to double the hustle but no human nature would always kick in and you will get hit series of syndrome that will want to slow things down before you know you are lagging behind. Here are the things you need to know as an aspiring Software Engr. 1. You will never be good enough (Imposter Syndrome): I guess you already know what that means, start doing whatever your goals are for learning to code immediately. 2. Never code without Mock-up: You can say but I am not a UI/UX designer, it doesn't matter, knowing exactly what you want to make will save you a lot of UI debugging time, companies that spend money on product designers are not dumb and besides it doesn't take that much time to grab the basics, though becoming an expert can take a lifetime, but hey the basics to is okay for you as a FE developer. 3. Know exactly what you want before you write your first print function: I know this seems easy but I can bet it's not cos it's a trap I have fallen into myself, From backend engineering with node.js to js 2D canvas games to FE with react.js, next.js to AWS to chrome extensions development and UI testing. It seems I have fallen into endless learning which in the end there is almost nothing to show for it. Assuming I had stuck to the react.js community and just did the needful, I might have landed a remote job by now after spending 3 years in the space. 4. Network like mad: Again, I failed here, I can't stress enough how your network is your net worth. A lot of ideas comes when you don't even think about it when your brain wave frequency is very low, You can know what problem people have that you can solve if you don't get out there and network, Linkedin is your best friend in the regard, reduce FB and bird app to the minimum if you don't want to trade networking for productivity which at the end will feel meaningless. If you have ideas, the MVP is ready, if you have quality the network the sky is the limit. 5. Get exposed: I am taking a lot of petty skills seriously these days, I have widened my horizon, I don't code for as long as possible again, I try to take inspiration from many spaces through I get to know about many problems, e.g I have YouTube channel on Bet bots, Do I play bets? No. But there is a community of people who do who will be super happy to handle over their cash to me if I can solve their gamble problems, which is basically reducing loss. 6. Find mentors: It is really difficult to find people who wanna mentor people with course to sell or hidden agendas that's why I commend people like tensazangetsu20 (bro where u find u moniker self ) for his persistent talk on coding miseducation, Listen to what he said works and it's your job to cut the bullshit out by wiving the ultimate Google. There are a lot of things to discuss and say, In fact, I never start, but I believe am still learning, and learning never ends but never allow learning mess up your productivity.
