eph12:So his whoscored rating is low. Also he scored no goal and made no assist. And we already proved that he is the most dribbled player in the team. What exactly is he so good at that he should be rated higher than his team mates who are specialists at scoring goals (Martial, Rashford), creating goals (Bruno), and stopping goals (AWB). How is running around the pitch like an Ikwerre masquerade superior to scoring and creating goals? There is a reason when they are giving Player of the Year awards and Golden Ball awards at tournaments the goal scorers and creators are recognized first. |
eph12:2 things can be true. He had a lot of great defensive performances but he is a liability going forward. And a full back who is a liability going forward especially in this day and age is a problem for a top team that will face lots of bus parking teams. AWB because of his defensive 1v1 mastery would always get votes for his defensive performances HOWEVER a player can perform well individually but not be the best option for the team. At the time Evra replaced Heinze, he was still probably not as good as Heinze defensively but SAF knew we needed an overlapping full back like Evra rather than a CB masquerading as a full back. I have always lauded AWB for his defensive abilities but even in games where he shines and locks up his opposing wingers like happened with Sterling you see hints of the problems to come. If he continues playing well defensively and struggling offensively he won't last in a top team. That is sure. |
eph12:Ok. How many goals or assists did Fred have. He is after all a midfielder. |
eph12:If you want to troll let me know. Heinze won this award and 2 years later he was surplus to requirements. Herrera won this award and 2 years later he was surplus to requirements. |
eph12:I don't carry agenda on my head like most people here. Everybody knows i am the President of Greenwood FC but when people were trying to completely absolve him of blame here i was extra critical on him. Ponder on this. afrodoc2: |
eph12:I just checked Whoscored. Our top season average performers in the EPL last season were: 1) Bruno Fernandes 7.73 2) Marcus Rashford 7.35 3) Anthony Martial 7.31 4) Wan-Bissaka 7.19 |
eph12:Not until resumption. His performance level dropped right from January when Bruno arrive and Matic regained form. Fred was good from Aug to Jan but afterwards he was quite terrible IMO. Bruno, Martial, Rashford, and even AWB before Fred for me. AWB was good for a longer period than Fred and he was actually good until the resumption before he fell off a cliff. |
eph12:He was what until the resumption? |
TrebleChamp:How did it help Mourinho when he came out publicly to demand players? Publicly asking for players will not change the mind of Woodward or the board so what is the point? Unless this is another opportunity to just criticize OGS for anything and everything. |
eph12:Exactly. I watched a game full of senior players and all they did was do “pass to Adnan and hope for the best”. |
Sniper4real:Figo was one of the last relatively slow dribblers. The guy would slowly move into the box from the right and slide passes across the box. Giggs was another bad guy. Most speedy wingers struggle with vision and execution of the final ball. That was where Giggs was different. He was quick and also could pass. |
Sniper4real:Valencia is a kick and follow winger. He would be useless as an inverted winger. If you check inverted wingers practically all of them are good at manipulating the ball either through step overs like Ronaldinho, Neymar, Nani or close control dribbling like Messi, Robben, Ribery. It is that skill and not their speed that creates the space to cut in and shoot. Straight line runners like Valencia can’t consistently create the space to cut in and shoot. |
I am sure Ole won't try it. Firstly there is no space in the 1st team for Garner this season. That midfield is already looking crowded. In addition, Garner isn't ready for the EPL. he needs a loan in the Championship or a weaker league for at least a season. Mengi is physically ready to contribute to the first team, especially with all the sicklers we have in defence. I don't want to hype the guy too much, but apart from the fact that i would have preferred him to be a bit taller he has no real weakness as a CB. |
Nezzjnr:Jimmy Murphy Award. Well deserved. It was either him or Mejbri. |
Nezzjnr:We have mentioned him here before. Youth team forward. Plays best as a LWF but can also play on the right and through the middle. Similar style to Martial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_BI_Ca5BUc |
MRTA7:Welcome onboard. There is a reason i didn’t get involved in the Sancho debate until i was directly questioned. |
handelex: ![]() It is the hope that kills you. It is you guys that are still expecting anything from the board that are stressing yourselves. We already said that they spend only if their financial bottom line is at risk, and that is mainly about Champions League football. Maybe now that Spurs has started spending and improving they might feel threatened enough to buy some players. It is the fans that are after titles. The board is happy with Top 4 and Champions League football. The sooner people accept that the better for their peace of mind. It is what it is. |
Roland17:LOL. Rodgers might be the BOAT but he is definitely not the GOAT. This is coming from a Rodgers fan. |
A40:Stephen A actually called him out and said his job is in jeopardy. Doc can't dodge the blame in this one. |
Sniper4real:2 major shifts in football philosophy have led to the preference for inverted wingers. 1) The most significant change was the switch from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. With 4-4-2 there were 2 strikers in the box which meant the chances that a cross from a traditional winger would find a striker was still high. However with teams now using 1 striker the chances of cross and nod working has drastically reduced. Now rather than just crossing for 2 strikers who are meant to supply almost all the goals the winger has to be able to cut in and contribute his own share of goals. 2) The evolution of the full back from a purely defensive player to an attacking outlet providing width. In order to have that space up front to run into it is better that he plays with an inverted winger who drags the full back inside thereby creating the space. Both of these changes happened around the same time i.e late 90s and early 2000s which is why the last truly great traditional wingers Figo, Giggs e.t.c overlapped with the first truly great attacking full backs Roberto Carlos, Cafu AND inverted wingers like Pires, Ginola, Ronaldinho, Robben, Ribery became more and more prominent. |
Godx:Haba! |
elrony:Now you see why he has been crossing the ball from 40 yards out on the left flank rather than taking the opposition full back on. He does not have the acceleration he had pre-injury. At least not yet. |
iamJ:. |
GloryIsaac:Lol nah. Wasn’t giving shots. Was just illustrating the amount of belief Madrid have in him. |
Botfuss:Rodrygo would be almost as expensive as Sancho, if not more sef. Madrid bought him as a relatively unknown 18yr old from South America for 45m Euro and view him as one of their future stars. How much do you think United would sell Greenwood now if another club came calling? That is the amount Madrid will ask for Rodrygo. |
eph12:Maybe. But immediately Madrid insisted on the buy back clause we should have moved on. The season has started already, this is not the time for useless discussions. |
Oasis007:This is part of the foolishness the board exhibits regularly. What is there to discuss? If they don't want to remove the clause then we should move on to another LB like Telles or whoever. |
eph12:1) I think Dortmund are really serious and won't even sell him to us now if we come this late in the window and they can't get an adequate replacement. 2) If we go by the true value of players he is not worth that amount, especially in this post-COVID era where all clubs are feeling the pinch. However most players are sold for more than they are actually worth, therefore if you go by Karvetz 80m Euro, Victor Osimhen 72m Euro, Chilwell 50m Euro then Sancho should be worth about 100m Euro. 3) I don't want him to be bought for 120m Euro especially this late in the season because of the added and unnecessary pressure that he will face. Firstly he would be the first 100m pound English player. Secondly coming after the foolishly protracted negotiations there will be so much scrutiny compared to if we had done it quickly and early in the window. Thirdly he would be coming without any pre-season with his new team mates. To summarize, it is a complex situation and even though i would prefer us not to go above 90m pounds i.e 100m Euro, i think we might have to if we mean business. Both sides have good arguments but i don't see why some are insulting each other and going so personal with the issue though. Lastly Sancho or no Sancho we need a LB to compete with Shaw and keep him on his toes. Move Williams to RB as an attacking sub for AWB. |
Leyqute:3 respected posters here o. Especially Eph12. The guy was so cocksure of Pepe's success he wanted to fight people here while defending his main man. Well such is life. I hope he has learned from his mistakes. ![]() |
Now that we have handed Eph12 the L like a crown of glory can we go back to the Sancho fee debate? ![]() |
Expert17:I can't deny Sancho or Greenwood. NL is littered with my posts hyping them. It is when Pepe fanboys like Eph12 start looking for trouble that one has to hand them the L like a medal of honour. |
eph12:And? Putting someone in a list of 5,6 options doesn't mean much. Like the people mentioning Perisic today as an alternative or dropping a list of 4,5 alternatives to Sancho. It is when people start guaranteeing success like you did with Pepe that we know it is serious. Here is my assessment of AWB before we bought him. afrodoc2: Let us see your assessment of Pepe. ![]() |
