What’s happening in Oyo is the more you look, the less you see.

You can ask them the things he has done in Oyo State that gives him the active and performing governor tag. grin
LOL. Nothing can shock me about Naija politians. They are very good at blowing their own trumpet.

Yeah yeah. He's foolish to risk thousands of lives. He is most definitely regretting his actions now. I just hope he's the only one infected, so that he'd pay fully for his negligence.

That will teach him a lesson one way or another and I'm sure when he survives this, he'd be a better person altogether.

The rally situation isnt disputing the fact that's he has been a good, performing and active gorvenor so far.

That is what actually makes it more disappointing. Someone that was being held up as smart and with bright ideas, at the first hint of a crisis showed himself to be more of the same clueless lot that have dominated our political scene.

I posted it because it was sensible. He made some stupid remarks about the virus which is really foolish of him, right but he realized his mistakes and he apologized admitted what he did was wrong. I'm not trying to defend him or anything, I'm just saying. Without the rally, the virus might still enter the city because the virus was already in the country then.

Already, he has the virus already so that should be enough punishment for him.
It was quite a senseless statement from him. As the leader of a state he should have known better. What nonsense world was he living in that he was not aware of the pandemic.
At a time that pastors and imams were being castigated for holding services for a few hundred people the dunderhead was holding a political rally for thousands of people.

Yes without the rally the virus might have spread because it was already in the country, but that actually makes his actions worse. A numbskull governor was holding a political rally AFTER it became public knowledge that there was spread of a pandemic into the country.

He should have apologized and left it at that, instead of trying to hide under the banner of "we acted based on information we had at the time". Senseless statement.

Calm down bros.

I don’t think we have ever been in this situation before in our entire history as a country. I don’t think we have ever been in a situation where we lack ventilators in the country. afrodoc2 & Unlimited22 can shed more light on that.

This is not even about defending the govt, shouldn’t the govt be making efforts to get ventilators anywhere they can get? Is it until we have a spike in cases before they start looking for ventilators?
We have always lacked ventilators in this country. It is just that COVID-19 has highlighted the problems Nigerians face daily.

Nigerians have been dying like chickens for years because of lack of hospital funding, staffing, training, and equipment. People just took it as part of life, dazzall.

Pre-pandemic we didn't have enough doctors, nurses, ambulances, intensivists, emergency physicians, ventilators (both invasive and non-invasive) e.t.c

The major point you and i agree on is that this is not the time to start wasting time pointing fingers while lives are lost. Let us just find any solution to this crisis for now, then we apportion blame later.
To clarify, the sitting President and his government have to take a large chunk of that blame when it is time to share it like the national cake. It is just not the right time for that.

I saw the map indicating the ratio of doctors to patients per region and I felt like hunting him down. If we get critical case, we are doomed.

A part of me wants him to contract corona with heavy viral load, no "abload" to run to.

I'm tired of this country.
Ngige is another slowpoke. Imagine a medical doctor being so clueless about the true state of affairs in the health sector?

If our leaders can be so moronic how dull do you think the common man on the street will be?
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by afrodoc2: 7:09pm On Apr 02, 2020
Even if they import the ventilators who will operate them?
How many healthcare workers based in Nigeria have expert experience in using them?

Practically every doctors’ strike over the years has been met with opposition by the general public and even here on NL.

Doctors complained about not being properly trained, equipped, or remunerated for years but the narrative that the people loved to believe was that of the lazy and greedy Nigerian doctor.

Now we have neither the equipment nor the staff to respond if this pandemic sweeps us like it has done in Europe and America.

I think the issue beyond pride for me is why does Nigeria have so few ventilators.

Can you imagine if Nigeria had 50,000 cases? Other countries have been overwhelmed because they are dealing with circumstances far more dire than ours. If Nigeria was a well run country we would even be in position to capitalize from this crisis.
The ship on why Nigeria has so few ventilators has sailed.
Do you guys realize we don’t even have enough doctors in Nigeria?

Like Dayo stated, all these are long term problems that were created by 60yrs of mismanagement and can’t be solved in 2 weeks.

What we should be focusing on now is what can be done to improve the situation RIGHT NOW, rather than lamenting or complaining about lack of facilities and equipment.

After asking Elon Musk for ventilators, does Nigeria have the drugs for intubation or Anaesthetists to run intubation?

Afrodoc2, Unlimited22, how many Nigerian doctors do you know that read Anaesthesiology?
LOL that one na the next problem na. Personally i know only one of my classmates that is an anaesthetist in Nigeria, and he is in Port Harcourt.

While anaesthetists can do a job, it is actually intensivists that are best suited for this particular situation, and there are even fewer of those ones in Nigeria.

In America they are breaking new death records everyday before I went to sleep last night it was 850 which broke Tuesdays record, Tuesday broke Monday record and they say the worst is yet to come

States like Florida that refused to lockdown early and still had their beaches and normal life running 2 weeks ago are the next in line

Lousiana that hosted Mardi gras festival is also getting ready to be the next hotspot

Unfortunately most of these states are not as rich as New York.

If American president is predicting 250k deaths what should Nigeria get ready for?

Positive news afrodoc I heard the TB vaccine that all babies born in Nigeria take might give us some form of immunity. I am not sure o
Yeah a friend of mine mentioned it to me today. Not sure how that works because it doesn’t make obvious sense.

They are going by the mortality rates in countries with BCG programs, rather than hard medical findings.

We’ll see how it pans out. Correlation does not imply causation.

If it is true then it might just be the escape route for Nigeria.

Bros how can the government order lock down without proper amenities to the people.
No electricity since this lockdown has started we have been running generator atleast we can afford it what about others.
Food :some people have to work before they can feed their families hunger will kill them before Coro get them.
They have been talking about audio food since Monday until people die of hunger before the food get to them
I just hope this lockdown won't result to stealing and breaking into people's home
There is already a breakdown of law and order in parts of Southern Italy( the poorer half of Italy).
People have started starving over there.

However the government can’t magically take a few days to fix all the problems that we have had as a country for decades.
If you want the government to fix poverty, poor electricity, corruption, lack of good facilities in 1 week before we go on lockdown, you are on a long thing.

The question is simple. Do you want disease or do you want starvation?

Good doctor, my theory is that our mortality rate will be a lot lower. I think Europe is running at circa 0.5% for starters given the lack of testing.

Also

1. We have a much younger population

2. A good percentage of our population with co-morbidities have died already. There is almost no Nigerian with Cancer or Cardiac problems for example that hasn't already died except the super rich. You will just hear "he died after a brief illness"

3. Vast majority of Nigerian men are in good cardiovascular fitness which seems to be a determining factor. And by Nigerian men, I don't mean those on Nairaland, but those who hit the street everyday and are naturally fit as a result of daily survival.

So I think our mortality rate will be much lower, maybe 0.2%.

And if you consider most of our population will activate chloroquine early unlike Europe who don't have access to the drug at home, maybe less.

Social distancing will inevitably fail in Nigeria given our living conditions, lack of education especially in the North, and need for daily survival. We should just ride it out. More would die from lockdown.
I had this debate with my mum recently and funnily enough I was more on the side of loosening the lockdown while she wanted a tight lockdown.

There is no perfect answer. We are between a rock and a hard place, between the devil and the deep blue sea.

The lack of an established social benefits system and the relatively high rate of poverty in Nigeria means the government is torn between allowing disease to kill its citizens and leaving the people to starve to death.

I don’t know what the answer is, but all the options seem painful.
You do have a point about a younger and less obese society in Nigeria, with lower rates of smoking, chronic respiratory conditions, cancer, and likely diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease.
However 0.2% (if we are that lucky) is still about 200,000-250, 000 people.

Nigeria’s Egungun has to be extraordinarily careful.

Naija should just go with herd immunity please.

Only the middle class who can afford to sit home are promoting this thing. The masses cannot survive lockdown.

Social crisis will take place in Naija in just two weeks if every is forced to sit at home.
There is a strong case against herd immunity, and that is why your government and other proponents have drawn back on it recently.

The best kind of herd immunity is the one derived from vaccines, but we don't appear to be close to that yet. This means that the only other option for developing herd immunity is infections.

Herd immunity derived from actual infections is a tricky thing. You need a certain threshold percentage of a population to be immune before you can get herd immunity, and this threshold percentage varies from disease to disease based on how infectious it is.

For example for a highly contagious disease like Measles you need over 90% of the population to be immune before you can have herd immunity. It is estimated that with the level of infectiousness of COVID-19 you need to have about 60% of the population immune i.e infected to develop herd immunity.

So if we take Nigeria as an example, 60% of the population is about 100million, meaning at least 100million Nigerians need to be infected to develop herd immunity. If we are assuming a mortality rate of 1-2%, that means potentially 1-2 million Nigerians will die of COVID-19 if it is deliberately left to spread in order to achieve herd immunity.
