Rasputinn,

Thanks for pointing all those out. I think pushing for a bill like above will help root out such practices.

If the source of funding is known and how much each source donated stated, some members of the public like you who already know about the back dealing of the govt. and the businessmen will raise alarm when some suspicious amount is donated.

I think it is also possible to put a cap on how much an individual donates to a campaign fund. Such .will make it difficult to allow such huge donations like Dangote would give to PDP.

The bill also require the publication of campaign expenditure.

Their will be a monitoring team that includes the journalists that will compare the said expenditure and what was seen on campaigns. Any perceived irregularities will be made public and such will count against the individual contesting if he is not disqualified out-rightly for irregularities.

nas 00:
As i write, I hav slept only about 5hrs in the last 48hrs (d usual trend 4 me). I cannot remember when last I saw my family. As I type these words, i may b called at d emergency dept to come attend to a patient cos i'm on call again. I barely have time to myself anyday, let alone a date(dat's not my problem, anyway), I could go on 'n onBack at work, there are inadequate diagnostic facilities/ equipment, leading to sheer wastage of precious time. Very often, lack of power supply would compound d woes of d doc and his patient, we are exposed everyday (more than in any other work class) to d dreaded HIV/AIDS infection (1 in every 4 patients are infected in d facility where i work), every patient wants d doc to be beside him or her all d time. Often, d nurses are deliberately making life unbearable for d doctor (beef), Again, I could go on and on. These are only very few of d challenges being faced daily by d average medical doctor in nigeria.

Now, i don't really know where to begin addressing d high level of ignorance some people have displayed on this thread, about d plight of Nigerian medical doctors. It's just sad and unfortunate, to say d least. I was particularly amused by d pig-headed fella who kept arguing about a profession he obviously knew very little about (probably nothing more than d words- 'Optometrist' and 'Opthalmologist'). That guy is a charlatan, albeit fat in the head.

In essence, Nigerian doctors should refuse to be distracted by such charlatans. Let's continue doing d best we can 4 our patients 'n of course, stand up 4 our rights all d time.
I feel for you my dear. You are probably still doing your house job. If not then you must get the reward somehow. It is a good news though. However, I don't think you are always on call except your hospital is short-staffed. You are the first to mention some real problems. However, it is not the best to abuse someone with a different opinion no matter how irritating it may be to you. you can only lay your argument and counter his or just ignore him.

Guys we want to get something done. We have whined enough. We have called names. We need someone to bell the cat.

Let us start somewhere. What do you think? Complains alone cannot solve a problem. Lets start with something!

God bless Nigeria!!!!

Kobojunkie,
That's cool. If there are more people that think that it is possible we may go ahead put a bill together. Even 2 people can sponsor a bill anyway.

Where are the lawyers and the activists in the house? Let us do this one!

Guys

I was just wandering if it is not possible to monitor source of campaign funds in Nigeria.

The issue of godfatherism and so on could be tackled.

Is it possible to push for a bill that will
1. mandate every contestant to open an account dedicated to his/her campaign.
2. mandate the campaign team to disclose detailed earnings and donations to the fund
3. disclose the names of donours to the fund etc.

I am not a legal expert to know if that will consitute an invasion of ones privacy in Nigerian law.

Please say what you think? If we agree that it can help and it is possible, we can agree to sponsor a bill to that effect.
