ComputersRe: Starcomms Suspends Customer's Accounts Indisciminately by agboifo(f): 12:42am On Dec 06, 2009
Individual-A may download 200GB software using Torrent and may never get banned by Starcomms, while Individual-B may download 1MB and get banned.  It is not arbitrary, and although Starcomms can "see" all your traffic, they are not the ones watching your 'moves'.

Owners of copyrighted materials have employed professional snoops who check peer-to-peer networks, rapidshare, megaupload, etc and other download sites, checking for their materials if any.  Don't you wonder why many download sites encrypt their URLs.

As soon as one of these detect your Modem ID for starcomms (which by the way is unique - your telephone number), they write a rather (very) official letter (similar to that posted above from Sony) to Starcomms, DEMANDING that Starcomms take action.  True, Starcomms could tell them to bug off, but they consider the cost.  You (a N30,000 guy) versus an international reputation potentially worth more, and Starcomms naturally will chose to ask you to "shape up".

OK, thank God we've qualified, but that's not very good for weak hearts you know.  We manage to scrape by always and the end result - High Blood Pressure big time!

We are fighters in Nigeria for sure, but fight on our terms.  Sometimes therefore 90minutes is too short a time to decide to wake up, and then it's too late.  This time however, we "decided" to fight within the given time frame.

Thanks be to God!  (but then, the Kenyans prayed too, no? smiley )

Christianity EtcRe: Catholic Archbishop Of Benin City In Serious Sex Scandal by agboifo(f): 11:34am On Oct 29, 2009
Interesting conversation here. First of all, when a story involving more than one person breaks, the person who speaks first gains an (usually undue) advantage because we get to hear only one side of the matter, and make judgments thereby. Imagine you hear another side, your conclusions might be different.

Secondly, if the bishop in question has any concern not to cause (further) scandal for his people (flock, dependents, etc), he will likely decide to remain silent. This will further fuel the undue advantage already talked about above. Some will ask that he "speak", so that they can hear the other side.

Someone here says, "Celibacy oaths are bullshit". I beg to disagree. If there are allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against some members of the clergy (please note "some"), it is not a problem of celibacy, for after all the candidate for the priesthood was fully aware of this before he undertook to be ordained. Celibacy implies a permanent commitment, that cannot be changed at will. The ability to make permanent life-long commitments is what differentiates us from animals and other irrational beings.

The same person who believes that "celibacy oaths" is to blame for sexual abuses is simply being naive. A married man who wants to be unfaithful to his wife will be, irrespective of the marriage VOW he took - same goes for the woman. So you see, it is not a question of a vow, but of a willingness to struggle to remain faithful forever. Some do, some do not!

That said, rest assured that the competent authorities will sort this matter out properly.

ComputersMr. .ng Ndukwe Kalu Is Dead by agboifo(op): 7:40pm On Sep 10, 2009
Many people are credited with bringing the .ng domain home to Nigeria, but Ndukwe Kalu, the pioneer president of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association holds a special place. Today we received the sad news of his death on Tuesday. Very strange and very shocking because we were in touch less than 48 hours ago.

Many things can be said about death, one of which is the suddenness with which it comes. Ndukwe wrote us all two days ago, and some of us replied him in private, not knowing that it would be the last time we will communicate here on earth. Everything changed in less than 24 hours, unexpected, sudden, shocking… for everyone but God. Because he knew.

I have heard a modern-day saint, Josemaría Escrivá tell that God is not a hunter who catches preys unawares; Rather, he is a farmer who only cuts the flowers when they are at their ripest and sweetest. I think this is what happened to Ndukwe. God, who knows everything, called him at the best time.

What can we here do? First, to pray for the repose of his soul. That God may deign to grant him Eternal Rest in His bosom. And then to pray for his loved ones. That God grant them fortitude to bear the loss, and also to grant them the grace to realize that it is His will, and that it behooves us mortals, as painful as it can be, to say with generosity, “May God’s Will be done”.

And for us all Nigerian Internet Stakeholders? Among others things, Ndukwe gave his all for the .ng ccTLD. The best we can do by way of a legacy for this great man is to say that “It will work, and work well!” and we shall all play our parts to ensure Nigeria’s continued presence on the Internet.
Many parties played a role in the .ng domain coming home to roost, but Ndukwe Kalu had a special part in it. He guided and guarded, and today, despite the occasional hiccups, the .ng domain is home. May God bless him!

Below is a Press Release by the deputy president Mary Uduma.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NIRA President, Engr Ndukwe Kalu, passes on

Lagos. Wednesday 9 September, 2009.

The Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NIRA) regrets to announce the demise of its pioneer President, late Engr Ndukwe Kalu, who died in Lagos yesterday.

According to Vice President, NIRA, Mrs Mary Uduma, with the death of late Engr Kalu, “the country has lost a dedicated ICT professional who dedicated his expertise, resources and short presence with us to the overall growth and development of the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in Nigeria.”

Under the leadership of late Engr Kalu, Nigeria recently recorded the successful full redelegation and local management of Nigeria’s country code top level domain name, the .ng.

“With his passing away, we have lost an irreplaceable individual who was passionately committed to ensuring the growth and development of the Nigerian Internet community and pursued this with zeal to his last day on earth”, added Mrs Uduma.“

For us at NIRA, we were shocked to learn of his demise but have taken comfort in the conviction that it was the way his Maker had willed it. But we remember him for the zeal he has contributed to the activities of NIRA particularly the landmark achievement of full control of Nigeria’s domain name on May 13, 2009 leading to full local management of the registry ”, added Mrs Uduma.

According to the NIRA Vice President, the body will liaise with the family which is expected to announce further burial arrangements in due course. Before his passing on, late Engr. Kalu was into design and installation of various networks for over a decade. Also noteworthy was the fact that Engr. Kalu pioneered IT publications in Nigeria.

This was through the publishing of Nigeria’s first IT magazine called IT WATCH AFRICA in 1994. From there, late Engr. Kalu revolutionized newspaper IT reporting by conceptualizing and commencing the first robust IT section in the Nigerian Newspaper history, tagged InfoTech ThisDay in 1998.He was a member of several professional bodies some of which are Nigeria Society of Engineers, Nigeria Computer society, Nigeria Institute of management, Chartered Institute of Administration, Institute of Data processing and management (IDPM) London, among others.

Late Engr. Kalu also served on various boards some of which are Amsco Telecoms Limited, Amsco Nigeria Limited, Admiral Insurance Company Limited, Pricehouse Communication Limited, Alphastream Solutions Nigeria Limited, among others. He also recently served as a joint committee of the Nigeria Communications Commission and ISPN on developing a suitable regulation for the use of ISM band. In 2004 he was elected as National Vice President of the Internet Service Providers Association of Nigeria (ISPAN).

Also he served on the NCC Industry committee set up to advise on VoIP regulation.Late Engr. Kalu also served on the National Cyber crime Working Group, a body set up by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to fashion out effective legislation and system to fight cybercrime in Nigeria.Engr.

Kalu has recently spearheaded several initiative to improve teledensity and Internet penetration in Nigeria, one of which is Naijawifi, an alliance of Nigerian ISPs set to blanket all of Nigeria with Wi-Fi Internet Access. He was also the Chairman of NCC/Presidential Committee to actualize a sustainable Internet Exchange for Nigeria.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: The Sad Tale Of My Employment Life - Please Help ! by agboifo(f): 12:14am On Aug 18, 2009
@poster, sorry about the stress.

Some ideas:

1. Wash Cars: In Victoria Island, Lagos, there are hundreds of thousands of cars whose owners do not have a driver. Go to a company and offer to wash their cars for a low rate. It convenient for the guys who could allow you come three times a week to do that. You may end up washing for the whole company. During an entire morning you'd have done and be through. You have the whole afternoon to yourself.

What is more, other companies nearby may need your service and you have a full day's job.

200N per car x 10 cars = N2,000.

2. Use your mobile phone for a call centre.

3. Take items to sell in Victoria Island - office to office. There's something win-win about this: the convenience of having goods come to you will make many professionals patronize you.

Just some ideas and hoping they'll help.

May God be with you!
BusinessCbn Sacks Ceos And Management Of Five Nigerian Banks by agboifo(op): 12:20pm On Aug 14, 2009
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed the Chief Executive Officers and other top management of five major Nigerian Banks. The banks are Intercontinental Bank, Union Bank, Afribank, Oceanic Bank and Fin Bank.

This appears to be the first step in a drastic plan to clean up Nigeria’s ailing banking industry.

The news comes at a time when the CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a risk management expert is preparing to sit down for a meeting with all the Chairmen and Chief Executives of all twenty five of Nigeria’s banks, later today in Lagos. Our sources say that no proxy representation is allowed at the meeting and this has forced many Chairmen and CEOs many of whom were on holiday abroad to fly back to Nigeria in the last twenty four hours.

WebmastersRe: Whats The Cheapest Web 2 Sms Website? by agboifo(f): 10:41pm On Jul 16, 2009
The bulk sms business is a tricky one but if you deal with a trustworthy person you're a lucky guy.

Why?

Some will offer you N3.00 per sms and you will prefer it to the guy who offers you N6.00, but there is something the first guy is not telling you. Asian sms gateways (India, for one) are the cheapest but they are not reliable.

Now if you're the sort that cares less whether the sms is delivered or not, fine, then you can go for the Indian route, but be sure, you cannot do any serious business with that.

The most reliable routes are the European sms gateways and believe me, if you get anybody selling you sms on the European gateway for less than N5.00, I say, run!

I know this because this is what I do for business. I don't bother haggling with anyone who asks me to reduce my price, because the mission-critical clients prefer what I offer. It gets delivered first time, all the time, and in less than 60 seconds.

Sure, I'm taking advantage of this to market and do a bit of bragging smiley But it works - I know!

Please make contact if you want to talk.

I did.
I sold "Cold Mineral", pasteries, "akpu", etc.
It was ok and I was happy to be able to contribute to the family income.  My dad had gone to school to get a late degree and we all had to chip in to help my mum. We sold after school and after home work. I think it was even some fun.
I'm happy I did.
