Thanks for this eye-opening post. But the difference in my own case is that I am his manager, he is also yet to pass probation(it is common for many to become lax after probation or spending over two years in an organisation) and he is trying to use the mental health card which I know vividly that isn’t the case but just as justwise mentioned and other mentioned, I would try to keep evidence and make sure to stay away from making it a personal grudge.
Chreze:
Yesterday when @lavida001 quoted your post, I was so tempted to reply him., I didn’t want to say what I am abt saying as I recently started healing from my experience. I was hoping it will end yesterday, guess it needed to be shared.

I had similar experience too, but mine affected me because going by lavida’s term “he is one of us”. I tried everything to help the homie, did his work, cleaned his mess and all. To the detriment of my own health, as it started affecting my mental state.

Why it affected my mental state was cos I personally don’t believe in treating people specially simply cos we are from same country/region/state. I see it as the first stage of racism. I believe to treat everyone same as we are all one (my personal translations of being a Christian, or a “true Christian” as we call it in Naija). Guess what, I didn’t know when I started treating homie specially, he kept playing the race and my own country person card. I was always angry during and after work. It started with me feeling like an immigrant shouldn’t be like that, to cleaning up his tasks. whenever he was unable to do his task and people noticed, I felt even worse cos people would report to me and expect me to do something or raise it with our manager. Infact, there were couple of times our line manager called me and wanted me to validate some complains he got from other teams, my response was “I am sorry, my work here is to secure the companies assets and grow personally/professionally, I don’t involve in conversation like this in place of work and outside office, there are means for security teams to monitor things, those means should be used”.

This whole issue messed with me for months - close to a year. It was so bad that my conversation with my wife daily was about work. How did it come to an end? One day he said something that got me so so upset that I took some days off. While I was on my days off, I realized I was in a very bad place, my thoughts were more negative than positive, I was losing me. I had to press my reset button. Went back to work with the sole aim of doing my job and logging off. I even told my manager I was promoted cos of my work ethic/performance, not to baby sit anyone and that he should deal with his people management ish leaving me out of it.

That was it, now I go to work, do my shit and log off. I Openly provide materials for everyone to learn and grow. No special treatment to anyone, back to me again.

To summarize the story, there are immigrants too who behave that way, it’s not particular to indigenes, Yes, you may want to argue that the homie in question has lived here for a very very long time, but guess what, with all the years, his accent and diction didn’t change, so the long stay thing doesn’t count either, People will always be who they are “or truly are”, no matter the skin tone. Like everyone has said, just do your work and let him be himself, being in security gives us access to be able to prove if people are working or not, you don’t have to say anything, direct your manager to using security tools to gather his evidence.

No drink panadol for another person headache. Keep your panadol, you go need am after people from Naija don call you to complain Tinubu full everywhere. 😁

He wants to be paid but doesn’t want to work. Universal credit is sweet money 🤩. My guy is going to France next week with his gf 😝
justwise:
Like others have stated..see yourself as a messenger in this case, whatever he says put it in writing and pass it on to your manager or HR.

Mental healthy is a touchy issue in work place and open for abuse, All you have to do is to listen to his concerns and not question or argue with him. At the end he will be asked to bring in doctor or GP report to back up his claim or mental health, though i'm not sure that individual is interested in that job.

So many suprises and I would wonder what the future of the Briton Next Generation is (Because he has many friends who are unemployed and would prefer the Universal credit and the twice a week Music Gig they get)😒

I enrolled him in a course that would let him use the Saas platforms we use in the organisation, My guy was asking me “does he have to do it?” 😂

Thank you so much for this detailed advice. I would stick to it.
Goodenoch:
You need to make sure you stick very closely to your organization's HR policies. Ask HR for assistance and take their advice to the T.

The last thing you want to do is make it seem personal. It's not your company and it's not your time and it's not your personal business, at the end of the day. When you speak to HR or to him or to anyone else, don't make it about you having to pick up his work (although you can cite that), make it about the effect on your team/service and how that's affecting your customers/service users/other teams/the overall business.

Don't get into an argument with this person. Put everything on paper and send via email to him or your supervisors/HR etc.

If he's late with work, ask him why by email. If he has not closed a ticket, follow up via that same platform etc.

For emphasis, the most important thing to do is don't make this about you on a personal level. Do everything you can to avoid that or you'll find yourself defending against allegations of bullying and discrimination that everyone knows are nonsensical but will not say due to needing to seem politically correct, and you may end up being thrown under the bus by your organisation.

It wasn’t mentioned during application/interview process, it was when issues started coming up that he now mentions it. he said it was previously diagnosed and fixed but keeps coming back.
Lexusgs430:
Mental health is a grey area, over exploited by many (simple because it's abstract)......

Is he medically diagnosed or self diagnosed.......

And was this disability, mentioned during the interview/application process....... An employer needs to make reasonable adjustments, if disability was mentioned........

I never knew the word until when he used it with me and what i got online most especially Reddit was that micro managing is bad 😞. How do i document the abuse of business hours with evidence. Unless I take a video or picture of him and won’t that be trespassing?
justwise:
yes and there is nothing wrong with that, document his abuse of the business houres and pass it to your line-manager.
TravelRe: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by AgentXxx(m): 12:24pm On Jun 26, 2024
I informed my Manager from the start too (though informally during our 121) but I have been documenting it in a HR platform we use called Culture Amp after all of our weekly meetings but during last week meeting, another twist came in as he claims to have suffered depression and was on anti depressants for years and music is what makes him focus and he suffers mood swings which have left me clueless on how to handle his case. Mental health seems to be most excuse used in here. Wallahi, I don tire .
Lexusgs430:
My problem with your position, is not officially documenting your concerns (from DAY 1).....

Why did you deem it your responsibility to cover up, for an employee you are meant to micro - manage.......

If you don't document your concerns or raise concerns with HR/line manager...... They never happened.......

So when his probation review is due, you want to download all your concerns/observations, at one sitting.......

If i was in your shoes, from a few weeks of observing negative work ethics from the employee, I am washing my hands off........ 🤣😂

To the Seniors In The House

Hello everyone,

In April, an employee was hired to directly report to me, in the past few weeks, I noticed he is always slow to respond to tickets, make so much errors which I have been covering his ass for, spends loads of time surfing the internet for music related stuffs including elections stuffs, listen loudly to music and would have to tap him to communicate with him. whenever this is pointed out to him, he is defensive, he lashes out that he is being micromanaged. is this really being micro managed? What is the best line of action to this? Even though I did sent a report of this to my line manager the IT Director last night and also have minute of our 121 meeting documented(with some of this issues mentioned).

NOTE: He is yet to pass probation in which review will be in about 2weeks.

They are many loan companies who are less concern with credit score but their interest rate are damn high(just search online) plus you can look into getting an Overdraft from your bank(interest would be high for long term borrowing too)
headofschool:
Guys, please I need advice. My employer recently sent my 3yr CoS to me and while it's a good thing, the cost that goes along with it seems to be much at the moment as we just finished paying tuition fee. Loan companies needed us to have good credit score before we can be eligible for loans. Are there any alternatives we could try to be able to get a loan?

1) The 39k must be earned by one person.
2) Yes
Paxziano:
Good day all

Please I need clarity on 2 issues

1: The £39k needed for COS, is it to be earned by one person or the family together (husband and wife). There was an argument today where I was so I want to be sure

2: If a fresh graduate gets a job that pays about £31k, would the person be eligible for COS? Considering the fact that the amount isn't up to the new UK govt threshold but it's up to the new graduate threshold

Thanks

Hi Fam,
Good evening.
Please I need insights as to how to land accounting roles interviews.

I am currently on a graduate visa due to expire December 2025. I have 7 years experience in the accounting world in Nigeria. And I have been working for more than one year with a charity organisation (paid volunteer) here in UK.
However, practically all my applications have been met with unfortunately feedback.

Your contributions to atleast land an interview will be highly appreciated.

Thank you.
