grin Thanks bro,I really do appreciate your time and I hope they bring it up in the probation review because the fear of having to move to a new job scares him as He has been blessed with a nice manager who is always on a lookout for him and kinda push him to be a better of myself plus friendly colleagues/environment only the pay kinda saddens him and that happens when He went for lunch with an intern and he highlighted his pay even though He still blame himself for not negotiating better earlier.God bless you …
koonbey:

Wait for your probation review and raise it. That’s the perfect time for it. All probation reviews will have a section where you’ll be asked to air your views and talk about what the company can do to support you better blah blah blah

I say wait because they may already have a salary increase in mind. Companies often don’t wait till the contractual dates, especially if it’s a hot industry/role. That’s what happened in my case.

When raising it, focus on the workload and the internal salaries. If possible keep the external ones out of it. You don’t want to highlight that you have been looking out YET. It’ll be implicit anyway.

Two, talk to your manager, not HR. It’s your manager that’ll advocate for any increase, not HR. You don’t want to go over your manager's head because it’s still them HR will ask about your performance etc before taking any decision.

Three, please perish the thought of claiming you misunderstood your contract. Just bring it up normally - they’ll even be asking you to 'be open and frank’ in the probation review so there’s no need to overthink it. Worst case scenario is they say they won’t increase and you plan your exit to a better paying role. Leaving because you can’t agree terms is not ideal but still normal - Don’t add integrity issues into the mix, please. You never know when you might need a reference or something else.

Servicing other countries kinda add to his hours as there are different time zones and he would need to work outside his normal hours sometimes.

True he has gained a lot of benefits servicing other countries plus having access to being impactful and among key shareholders in company but concern is the bills as he can hardly save after bills plus hearing that intern are getting same pay as him.
Amarathripple0:

He should read through his contract thoroughly before attempting this, as sentences like "the job description is not exhaustive of this list" are a good enough reason to get him to work for other regions. Also, how is servicing other countries adding to his workload; is he spending extra hours, travelling to these countries, etc.? It’s really only an issue if he’s performing too many functions outside of his scope of work and it's messing up his work-life balance. So these factors can be used as leverage to ask for more money.

As for him going above and beyond, that's not a good enough reason to ask for a raise just after a probationary period; this is more of a long-term ask, perhaps a few months before the February increase, so he can get more than the agreed-upon percentage in his contract. I would advise that he also look at the big picture as well; servicing other countries means he’s broadening his skill set and portfolio. Also, more money isn’t always the answer; can he get better benefits?

However, if he feels strongly about getting a raise because he’s doing way too much, he should have an informal chat with his line manager before making an official request.
Travel / Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by AgentXxx(m): 3:11pm On Jan 04, 2023
It’s an IT Support Role so he had to support other offices with different time zones e.g US and Australia so sometimes has to work out of normal office hours.

Because the employee was trying to win the manager and hr over which I think he has done well but he feels he has been robbed with the salary paid considering the average pay of such role plus he got to know interns are paid same fee.

Which of the February? Probation review is February 2023 while salary amendment is February 2024
Lexusgs430:

During the probation, was the employee sent abroad (what do you mean by UK office only)............

Done above and beyond during a probationary period, is a way of proving capabilities and abilities........ Why did the employee not refuse the extra roles ............ wink

Wait till February, but employee should have an informal conversation, over a cup of coffee, to their line manager........ For all we know, the extra roles carried out, might have simply gone unnoticed.......... grin
Travel / Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by AgentXxx(m): 3:04pm On Jan 04, 2023
No, the probation review is for February 2023 and he is already sure to pass as his manager didn’t hide his decision on this but next salary review as stated in the contract is for February 2024. Also He later noticed the average pay for such role is a bit higher than what He was offered and even intern In the company are receiving same thing as He receives but due to just getting a job asap He accepted it.
First of all , who do you think he should talk to first informally HR Director or my Manager?
Secondly, what will be the best form of approach so they won’t be issues since he is suppposed to have read the terms of agreement before signing or can He claim He thought it was February 2023 the first review was going to take place.
koonbey:

My understanding is that the probation review has occurred already - that would have been the perfect time to raise it.

Anyway, if it's February 2023, I would say wait and see what they offer, and if it's not up to par, raise the points made here. I should note though that it's not really a question of the geographical coverage that should be the priority - it should be whether the workload is significantly different, in terms of time and other things like travel etc. If it's taking the same amount of time/effort, the contract will typically be worded to cover that the company can assign you to different duties based on business needs, so they likely aren't actually violating it in any way. You should definitely still make the case for an increase, just bear that in mind in the presentation.

If it's February 2024, then yes, ask ASAP.

My rule of thumb is always to raise things like this informally to 'test the waters' and prime the recipients, before putting in a formal request.

@semmy k, @amarathripple, Lexus and other elders. A Quick Question: Is it possible for a newly employed staff to asked for a raise immediately after probation even though the agreement signed says salary amendment will be done every February starting from next year. But his claim is that the JD was to service uk office but during the probation time he has been servicing all other office ( about 4 of them) and done above what was required of him.

After 8months, I'm coming back to thank Ralph Lauren again. I followed your tips bumper to bumper. Did a couple of Schengen travels (9 countries in total). I didn't spend up to 1,000 pounds in all (flights and hotels).

Then I applied for the US visa and..... Boom. I got it. Visa officer legit asked if I had travelled internationally since I came to the UK and I remembered what Ralphlauren said about touring Europe. Boldly told him I've gone to Santorini, Germany,Italy, Spain, France, Poland...... Etc etc. Dude just told me the golden words straight up.

So thanks again Ralphlauren.

Can one explain this as it seems it either a scam or UK want to set me up for credits. Barely 4months in Uk and have been staying away from credit cards at least till am comfortable with it which I was hoping I will give it a trial this January but just today I got mails from various platform such as verypay, clean pay , lay pay encouraging me to shop with them that have got credits to spend. Are they legit? And am I being monitored on my spending?

NB: I did some huge cash shopping in December even though non of this sites were used?

angry {Rep for association of bicycle guys}
Amarathripple0:

If you use an iPhone, use Apple Map; it’ll ease things for you and it’s really good as it mentions traffic lights, alerts you of speed cameras ahead, and informs you ahead of time of turns and the right lane you should stay on ahead of a turn. If you don’t use an iPhone, then download Waze. Waze is equally good, if not better, as it’s more real-time. (I prefer the iPhone map, though.)

Finally, if you have right of way on a main street and you are approaching a corner street and there’s a car approaching at top speed, maintain your own speed and don’t slow down. They'll make way for you. I used to slow down a lot based on PTSD from Nigeria, but a lot of people here respect the right of way. However, there are some insane people, so remain vigilant.

And use your mirrors a lot; before every turn and every stop, these bicycle and scooter guys appear out of nowhere. Driving in the UK is enjoyable, so happy driving.

The only public fund available to non-uk citizens is this - https://www.gov.uk/help-with-childcare-costs/free-childcare-2-year-olds . Even at that, it’s for certain earners and not for everyone. Perhaps, you could read out the policy on council flats and public funds to her from legitimate websites so she doesn’t base it alone on hearsay but on facts.

There was robust discussion on NRPF around housing sometimes back in 3rd week of July (page +/-529). I posted a collation around mid Nov (although with focus on FE and bootcamps).
There's a body/network, NGO I think, focused on NRPF: search for them. [Update: they are nrpfnetwork.org.uk]

In-btw, I find the Wolverhampton Council site collation on NRPF well structured.

A Quick one, I have a neighbor from Nigeria on student visa who is blind. She claims she can apply for council housing using her disability as a reason without affecting her PGSV. Can anyone confirm this? Haven’t been able to get a reasonable answers online .

Thank you

Thanks for this detailed explanation but why am I paying a percentage after one year if I have finished paying for the bike before then.
justwise:

No its not public fund because you will be paying for it either weekly or monthly depending on how your salary/wages are paid.

If you take a bike worth ..e.g £400 or less you are likely to pay nothing as the money will come out of your salary sacrifice rather than from your net-pay.

The cycle to work scheme company will send you a purchase certificate to be taken to bike retailers, you can pick a bike, a lock, gloves etc all must come to a total of the amount on that purchase certificate

After one year you will be given some choices, either return the bike and everything that came with it or pay certain percentage and keep the bike. .

Ahahah, this is very relatable, I will ask myself shey na work we come do or chop and flex,Seriously they work smart and play hard, we have been watching all World Cup matches in the office , if you see our kitchen with food, fruits and edibles, I will just be thinking and crying silently of my working experience in Nigeria, Every Thursdays is Drink night at my office too, Fridays for bonding night, we chose an activity we do which can be indoor or outdoor, Last Friday was Axe Throwing which I never did in my life, we ended up in a club, I had to run home to meet my family, we spent not less than 800£, Sometimes I wonder they make profit with all of their expenses.
TouchOfSpice:
Yeah I think I can relate to some extent.

Jobs in the UK might make you feel like sey village people follow you come .

First 5 weeks in the UK was trying for me , despite the naija expectation I had that I will get a job immediately I arrive in the UK. Countless calls and interviews, even to some reaching final stage with their CTO na still silence later.

But when the time comes, I was opportuned by Gods grace to get an offer immediately after the last interview. Ever since na me dey ignore interview invite and postpone , surprisingly they will wait till any date you reschedule to. (This you can't try with my naija HR)

To cut the long story short, when the time comes , the same CV / your interview format you have been using will now start yielding offers like sey you do jazz.

As someone said above, never emphasize too much on visa sponsorship during the call /interview when you get the offer you can lay it on table and they will most likely oblige you. I did not asked for sponsorship during my interview.

In my present job the Head of HR is already asking me that am I willing to to be considered for sponsorship after my probation period. I am still sceptical simply because I know I am considering a position in Manchester metropolitan with 30% salary increase.

But it's sweet to work with the White o. They work smart but PLAY hard. Imagine having dinner/hangout event every 2 Thursdays of the month . There is even beer and drinks in the fridge to pop when you feel stressed. This I can never imagine in my naija.

Don't give up. Your hustle go click .

Cheers!!
