The colleagues of movie star Funke Akindele who was arrested and arraigned over violating the social distancing rule have expressed sympathy with her colleagues and called for leniency over the case in court. Most of her colleagues took to their instagram handles to express their sympathy as they equally prayed for her. They acknowledged that the Africn Movies Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA) award winner had been of a good behaviour over the years and had contributed meaningfully to the growth of the Nigerian entertainment industry. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Akindele was arrested on April 5 for violating the Lagos State rule of social distancing in view of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic. Akindele contravened the state rule when she organised an indoor birthday party for her husband JJC Skillz at their Amen Estate, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, the party which had over 20 people in attendance. Actress Bidemi Kosoko wrote on her instagram handle: “You can’t be broken sis because God is on your side. It is just so unfortunate that we live in a country where just one mistake erase millions of good things you have done. It is well sis,” she said. Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also had this on his instagram handle with Akindele’s picture: ” You will overcome,” he said. Also, veteran Actress Fathia Williams wrote: ” To err is human, to forgive is Divine. Be strong, the Lord is with you,” she said. Actor Yomi Fabiyi said “My prayers and concerns are with you Funke Akindele. I am particularly happy that you explained and apologised. “I have known you to be a very disciplined individual who pays attention to details, public association or authority instructions. “Your passion and desire to help save lives during this COVID-19 pandemic was quite rapid and evident. Hopefully, no immediate risk detected. “I join millions of your fans to say sorry and appeal for leniency. Social distancing is relatively new and most who violate never did it deliberately, aim to hurt others or intentionally disobey or trivialise the matter. “Funke don’t assume this will define you in its entirety, after your many years of meticulous uprightness and service to the entertainment world in Nigeria, hang in there, this too shall pass away. I am with you. “Maintain your apologies to the government and Nigerians, it should work at this crucial moment. Nigerians and the government appreciate humility and honesty. President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered distribution of 150 trucks of rice seized by Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to the 36 states of the Federation. The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists at a news conference in Abuja on Monday. The news conference was on the fiscal stimulus measures in response to COVID-19 pandemic and oil prices fiscal shock. Ahmed said the seized trucks of rice had been handed over to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management for onward distributions to Nigerians. She added that in addition to this, the president had also approved distribution of grains from strategic grain reserves across the country. The minister stated that as part of the effort to support the farmers, the president also approved reduction of the price of fertilizer from N5,500 to N5,000 per bag. She added that this was another measure to give subsidy to farmers in view with the economic crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic. According to her, more measues will be taken to provide broader benefits to the citizens. “We don’t want to rush and announce measures that will end up benefitting only a few of the segments. Our interest is to make sure that as much as possible a lot of Nigerians are productive and have liquidity in their hands. “This will help to increase the consumption thereby assist to improve the economy. “This is not something we will announce in a hurry without consulting with the central ministry and also without consulting with the key participants in the sector,” she added. The minister noted that the emerging health and economic risks resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and decline in international oil prices posed existential threats to Nigeria’s economy, healthcare system, national security, as well as the lives of the citizens. She emphasised that extra-ordinary measures would be required, as the situation evolved, to address these challenges. The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have rejected the invitation by the Federal Government of a Chinese medical team to help Nigeria in its coronavirus response. The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, had disclosed on Friday that gifts of medical supplies were being expected from China, organised by a group of Chinese companies working in Nigeria. “A special cargo aircraft shall leave Nigeria in a few days to collect the items, which include commodities, PPE and ventilators. Of great interest is an 18 man team of Chinese medical experts, including doctors, nurses and public health advisers, who shall come along with the flight,” the minister had said. NMA President Dr Francis Faduyile, in a statement yesterday, urged the government to rescind the decision in the overall interest of the country. He asked the government to declare a state of emergency in the health sector and fix health institutions urgently. He said association was disappointed that the government neither carried it along in arriving at the decision nor took into cognizance the extant laws regulating the practice of medicine in Nigeria as enshrined in the Medical and Dental Council Act. He said: “We are therefore profoundly dismayed to learn that the Federal Government is instead inviting the Chinese who from available accounts are not out of the woods themselves. The spike in cases and the death toll from COVID -19 in Italy coincided with the arrival of the Chinese in the guise of offering assistance. Even the United Nations has only just recently commended the efforts of Nigeria so far. “It is a great disservice to the morale of the long-suffering frontline health workforce if the government goes ahead to invite these Chinese doctors. The invitation demeans their sacrifices so far in this pandemic. We fail to see how the 18 man team would impact the current efforts in any significant way.” The NMA president said the lack of personal protective equipment, grossly inadequate test kits and test centres across the country as well as lack of insurance for the workforce were critical issues begging for attention. Similarly, TUC President Mr Quadri Olaleye and Secretary General Mr Musa Lawal-Ozigi, in a statement, advised the government not to invite Chinese doctors. The union leaders said that the move to invite the Chinese doctors was unnecessary, saying that those in Nigeria were on top of the challenge. According to them, the minimal number of people infected and deaths recorded is a proof that Nigeria is not doing badly in the efforts to handle the situation. “Truly, the Chinese authorities have done well by not recording more cases in their country; it is novel and also shows their proactiveness and commitment to crises. “That notwithstanding, we insist that we do not need them now; rather, we shall continue to adhere to precautions by health professionals to make the job easy,” they said. Experts in various sectors of the Nigerian economy have given indications that the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the private sector negatively as many firms are struggling to survive. The pandemic is already affecting businesses in advanced economies such as the United States and United Kingdom. For instance, the US Department of Labor recently announced that employers cut over 700,000 jobs in March. While there is yet no current statistics on job losses in Nigeria, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that in 2019, Nigeria’s unemployment rate rose to 23.1% and underemployment to 16.6%. This might be further worsened by the effects of the pandemic, experts say. NBS data indicate that over 20 million Nigerians are unemployed as at 2019 and looming job cuts as a result of COVID-19 will likely worsen the situation. Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed An economist, Tope Fasua, said the recent partial shutdown of Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, Lagos, and the administrative headquarters, Abuja, by President Muhammadu Buhari and other movement restrictions across the country as a measure to check spread of COVID-19 is likely to affect the prospects of many businesses. “Goods are acquiring demurrage at the ports and if the lockdown persists, many importers will simply abandon the goods – and many will go bankrupt,” he said. On looming job losses in Nigeria, Fasua noted; “The bankruptcy that is already rolling abroad will soon make a landfall here (Nigeria).” Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted that the global economy will fall by 12% due to the impact of COVID-19. Already, businesses are already feeling the brunt of the pandemic even as the Nigerian economy is bleeding. The international price of oil has fallen far below the country’s bench mark upon which the 2019 budget was predicated. “Rating agencies have downgraded Nigeria to B Negative, almost the default zone, and the prognosis is not looking good at all. Foreign investors are listless right now,” Fasua said. Workers in the aviation sector, hotels, oil and gas as well as the financial services sectors are likely to be affected the most. Daily Trust on Sunday’s findings show that key employers in the aviation sector have asked some of their staff to proceed on compulsory leave without pay pending when the situation improves. An employee of a top hotel in Abuja told Daily Trust that they were asked to go home without details of what to come next. He said they were categorically told that they would only receive half of their salaries in April, and what comes after that would be determined by the prevailing situation in the country. The employee noted that operations at the hotel have virtually been grounded with no over 95 percent of the rooms now vacant, adding that the future of many of the company’s staff remains uncertain. Meanwhile, analysts have unanimously argued that banks and other financial institutions will almost certainly need to manage the earnings impact from the sudden COVID-19 pandemic which has forced a near shutdown of economic activities. Most financial sector players have activated their business continuity plans and strategies for survival. Analysts at PwC said post COVID-19, banks would need to rethink their balance sheet challenges while managing loan stresses. They noted that the banks would need to find ways to trim their costs quickly by resetting their revenue outlook and recalibrate for the future. An analyst said, “The COVID-19 pandemic could be the most serious challenge to financial institutions in nearly a century. As the economic fallout spreads, retail banks will find themselves juggling some big priorities that require concrete steps to reposition now while also recalibrating for the future. Egypt’s main cancer treatment facility has 17 cases of the novel coronavirus among its medical staff, an educational institute said Saturday, sparking fears of exposure among vulnerable patients. Cairo University, with which the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is affiliated, said in a statement Saturday that “17 doctors and nurses” at the NCI had contracted COVID-19. The university said it would open an investigation “to determine whether there was any negligence” at the institute. Earlier in the day, NCI director Hatem Abulkassem had told a private TV channel that three doctors and 12 nurses were infected. Abulkassem said the facility would be sterilised and patients who were in contact with the medics would be tested, along with all staff members. He said patient visits had been suspended in recent weeks. “It is tough to trace where the first infection emerged as the majority of the (institute’s) medical personnel work in several other places,” Abulkassem added. Last month, several Egyptian hospitals were closed for sterilisation after cases were detected there. Egyptian authorities have officially reported 985 COVID-19 cases and 66 deaths. The North African country, with a population of over 100 million, has imposed strict social distancing measures, including a night-time curfew, to reduce the risk of contagion, and several villages have been placed under quarantine. Tourist and religious sites are shuttered, schools have been closed and air traffic halted. Authorities have threatened penalties, including fines and imprisonment, for those caught disobeying confinement orders. Saudi Arabia has imposed 24-hour curfew in the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina on Thursday, extending measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus, which has infected more than 1,700 people in the kingdom and killed 16. The Interior Ministry said in a statement there were some exceptions, including for essential workers and in order for residents to buy food and access medical care. Cars in those cities’ residential districts may only carry one passenger to limit the virus’ transmission, it said. The country of 30 million has taken drastic steps to contain the disease, halting international flights, closing most public places and suspending the year-round Umrah Pilgrimage. On Tuesday, it asked Muslims to put plans for the annual hajj pilgrimage on hold pending more clarity about the pandemic. Restrictions on movement have tightened, with entry and exit to Riyadh, Mecca, Medina and Jeddah heavily restricted. Some neighbourhoods in Mecca and Medina were already under full lockdown, but in the rest of those cities, the curfew was previously from 1500 to 0600. The eastern oil-producing province of Qatif, where the kingdom’s first coronavirus cases were reported last month among Shi’ite Muslim pilgrims returning from Iran, has been on lockdown for nearly four weeks. Saudi Arabia has the most infections and deaths among the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council. But public health officials say past experience combating the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) helped prepare the kingdom for the new coronavirus outbreak. The Adamawa State Government has imposed a two-week lockdown across the state, as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The state governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, in a statement on Monday, said the lockdown takes effect from midnight Tuesday, 31st March, 2020. He said the decision, though painful, was necessary to save lives of all citizens in the state, as the number of confirmed cases hit 111 nationwide. He reiterated that inter-state and international travel restrictions are also imposed as the state shares borders with Cameroon. Fintiri explained that the ban also affects taxis, tricycles and bus operators throughout the state. He said the earlier directive given to workers on Grade 1-14 to stay at home was not strictly adhered to, hence the need for total lockdown in the state. The governor also said that social activities and markets are restricted with the exception of Pharmaceutical, Filling Station, food stores and banks who may operate skeletal services. “Social activities such as clubbing and Joints are banned; Markets are also hereby restricted, except for those selling food items, Pharmaceuticals, Filling Stations, while Banks are to provide skeletal services,” he said. He called on the people of Adamawa to ensure basic hygiene, hand washing and avoid crowded places. “Measures are aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus outbreak that has hobbled the economy, threatened to overwhelm public healthcare and killed more people than any other disease. We all have to forgo something for the good of Adamawa State,” he stated. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/covid-19-fintiri-locks-down-adamawa.html |
