Pope Francis will not lead any public celebration for Easter due to the coronavirus, the Vatican said on Sunday, a move unprecedented in modern times. “All the Liturgical Celebrations of Holy Week will take place without the physical presence of the faithful,’’ a statement from the Prefecture of the Pontifical Household said. The celebrations will still take place, but in ways that have yet to be defined in accordance with anti-virus contagion measures, Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, said separately. Easter, which this year falls on April 12, is the most important Christian holiday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. There are several ceremonies leading up to it, during a so-called Holy Week. One of the most solemn is a Good Friday evening procession by Rome’s Colosseum, the Way of the Cross, led by the pope and attended by thousands of worshippers. Another key event is the Holy Thursday’s foot-washing ceremony, which Francis has performed in the past in prisons, migrant detention centres and hospices for the disabled. The Vatican’s decision “opens up an unprecedented scenario: rites with no people,’’ Massimo Faggioli, a professor of theology and religious studies at Villanova University in the United States, told DPA. “Francis is facing a situation similar to predecessors, who were popes, while Rome and Italy were riven by war and general upheaval: just in the last two centuries, Pius IX, Benedict XV, Pius XII,’’ he added. In his Sunday Angelus prayers, which have been broadcast online rather than delivered to crowds in St Peter’s Square since last week, Francis sought to reassure the faithful. “In this epidemic situation, in which we find ourselves living more or less isolated, we are invited to rediscover and explore the value of communion that unites all members of the Church,’’ he said. “United with Christ we are never alone, but we are a single body.’’ Francis also thanked priests in Lombardy, the Italian region worst hit by the coronavirus outbreak, for “inventing one thousand ways to stay close to their flock’’. In Italy, where all church services are suspended, there have been reports about priests leading Mass via Instagram or driving around town reciting prayers through a loudspeaker. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Vatican has previously cancelled Francis’ public engagements and closed St Peter’s Square and the Basilica to the public. In late February, there was some concern about the 83-year-old pope’s health, as he caught a cold just as the pneumonia-like COVID-19 was spreading across Italy. The Vatican never confirmed press reports that he was tested for the coronavirus and got a negative result, but in any case, Francis seems to have recovered. Nevertheless, his Wednesday weekly audience, his Sunday Angelus prayers and his morning Mass in Santa Marta, the pope’s Vatican residence, are now broadcast online. For the weekly audience and the Angelus, this will continue until April 12, the Prefecture of the Pontifical Household, said in its statement. Public gatherings have been cancelled in countries across Europe as the continent battles with a growing number of COVID-19 infections, which have turned the continent into the world’s coronavirus hotspot. Italy, the worst-affected country in the world outside of China, where the outbreak originated, reported more than 21,000 cases and 1,441 deaths as of late Saturday. Ekiti State University, EKSU, Ado Ekiti, has retained the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Chancellor of the institution. It would be recalled that Governor Kayode Fayemi, appointed Sanusi, the Chancellor of Ekiti State University, EKSU, in 2019. A letter dated 12th March, 2020, by the Management of EKSU and signed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eddy Olanipekun, addressed to the former Emir , said the university will continue to recognize him as the Chancellor of the university despite his present travail. The letter entitled: ‘Letter of Solidarity’, said the step was taken owing to the university’s firm belief that Sanusi’s wealth of experience would be useful to the university. It reads: “We will continue to recognize you as our Chancellor with a firm belief that your wealth of experience would undoubtedly be beneficial to our university”. The university sympathized with the deposed monarch on his travail, saying his leadership in Kano will forever remain a reference point. “The news of your dethronement rendered the entire university community devastated and that has gone to confirm the assertion that only God gives power and at the same time relieves, if he so wishes. “The university acknowledges the fact that you had done your best, within the limited time God availed you on the throne. “On behalf of the governing council, Senate, staff and students of EKSU, where you serve as Chancellor want to identify with you at this critical moment of your life. “We will also like to reassure you of our unflinching support and cooperation as you traverse a new terrain,” the letter concluded. Some residents of Awe Local Government area of Nasarawa state, have appealed to the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II not to leave Awe community, assuring him of their cooperation. They described the emirs presence as a blessing, saying it has brought the community to limelight. They said Sanusi’s presence in the community has boosted its security and popularity. A cross-section of those interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria, on Thursday in Awe, headquarters of Awe Local Government Area, said that they were happy to host Sanusi. One of them, Hajiya Fatima Kande, said the community would do everything to make Sanusi’s stay memorable. Kande said members of the community would appreciate Sanusi’s permanent stay with them. “The people of Awe are peace-loving people and we like receiving visitors from every part of Nigeria. We are hospitable people. “We will do everything possible within our power to make the deposed emir’s stay memorable. We hope that one day he would decide to stay with us on his own forever,” Kande said. A resident, Malam Dauda Muhammad-Awa, said that although he was initially shocked by the sad news of the emir’s removal, he considered himself lucky living in the same community with him. The Kano State government had on Monday, March 9, dethroned Emir Sanusi II over alleged “total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the state governor and other lawful authorities, including his persistent refusal to attend official meetings and programmes organised by the government without any lawful justification which amount to total insubordination.” The 14th emir of Kano was hours after his removal banished to Nasarawa State, a development that elicited outcry from different quarters. He was subsequently replaced by Aminu Ado Bayero, the son of the 13th emir of Kano. The deposed emir now lives in Awe town of Nasarawa State amid tight security by federal forces including the police and operatives of DSS. Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on Thursday faulted the deposition of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, describing it as “innate travesty of justice.” In a statement titled, “FOR WHOM THE GATES OPEN WIDE”, Soyinka stressed that the conduct of Kano state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, was at par with “repudiated” colonial order. According to him, it is an action “that out-feudalized feudalism itself, and is synonymous with authoritarianism of the crudest temper.” The Nobel laureate said, “The record shows, in this particular instance, that it is one that embodies modernized cronyism and alienated pomp and power – never mind the cosmetic gestures such as almajiri reformation. “It has proved one of the worst examples of a system that enables even the least deserving to exercise arbitrary, unmerited authority that beggars even the despotism of the most feudalistic traditional arrangements.” While hailing the deposed Emir, he said Governor Ganduje was misadvised in removing Sanusi whom he described as an “Islamic scholar, royal scion and seasoned economist,” saying days of reckoning await the governor. Soyinka said: “Why, I am not certain, but I do have the feeling that the palace gates of the Kano emirate are not yet definitively slammed against this Islamic scholar, royal scion and seasoned economist. It is just a feeling. “Closed and bared, or merely shut however, the doors of enlightened society remain wide open to Muhammad Sanusi. As for his current crowing Nemesis, a different kind of gates remain yawning to receive him when, as must, the days of governorship immunity finally come to an end. Those whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad. The list is long; there are comrades in impunity awaiting their day of reckoning. The files remain open, and the nation remains on the watch. The wheels of justice grind slowly, but sooner or later, they arrive.” He recalled that Sanusi was “one-man EFCC sanitizations squad in the banking system taking on the powerful corrupters of that institution.” “Unblinking, he trod on the interests of powerful beneficiaries of a worm-infested sector and, in the process, created permanent enemies. By contrast, confidence in immunity has catapulted his tormentor to the ranks of the most notorious public faces of the disorder that Sanusi strove to eradicate. “Obviously, vengeance lay in wait, and he was not unaware of it. The signs were omnipresent and Sanusi acknowledged their imminence. I know this for a fact. Apart from exchanges some mutual associates – we held, not so long ago, a phone conversation during his visit to London, just after the shrinking of his domain signaled the commencement of a systematic attrition of his status. “I assured him I would shortly fulfill my long-standing promise to pay him a visit. He sounded very much aware of the impending fall of the axe of vengefulness and power primitivism. I can testify that he remained totally unfazed,” Soyinka wrote.
