Our church has charged all parents of young children to read a Bible story each day to our children so reading from my son Noah’s children’s Bible has become a part of our regular bedtime routine. Sometimes I try to hit stories that relate to the current holiday in the Christian calendar and other times we simply pick stories that look interesting to him (there are pictures to help with the choice). There are also stories that he considers to be favorites–Noah and the Ark of course, Zacchaeus (because he loves the song), and Jonah. I have been very happy with his eager responsiveness to the stories and to reading them. He will even pull out his children’s Bible to share the stories with his stuffed animals–or at least some version that he remembers or can guess from the pictures. One day when he related the story of Jonah to Fred the green rabbit I was struck by how close to home the story strikes–for Noah, for me, for all of us. Noah’s version of Jonah: God told Jonah to go to a special place but Jonah didn’t listen. He went on a boat to another city instead. So God sent a storm and threw Jonah into the water and a giant fish swallowed him up. Jonah was in time out in the fish for three days before God told him he could get out of the fish. Then Jonah went where God told him to go. The End. Noah to Fred: “You have to listen to God or you’ll get in time out too!” Noah’s story is simplistic but then so is the essence of Jonah’s story. The moral of the story is simply that we must listen to God. If only it was as simple as that! Of course we know that. No matter what our religion or creed we know that we must listen to God. We know we must follow the rules and guidelines that God has set down for us. Children, like Noah, know they must follow their parents’ rules and dictates or there will be consequences. Often those consequences involve a time-out for Noah so the story of Jonah strikes home with him. Obviously as he grows older the rules that he must follow will come from many different sources and many will be unspoken. This is why his father and I now set down rules and boundaries for him. Obviously it makes our home life easier if he follows set rules and other rules are necessary for his protection, but even more important we are teaching him to follow the rules that God and society have set down for him. We learned rules as children for the same reasons but as we grow up and learn to abide by the rules of God and society the punishments we receive change and become more subtle. We no longer are put in time out but instead encounter punishments that more often come in a social or monetary form. For many of us it becomes increasingly easy to ignore these punishments without the threat of a big whale to swallow us up. As a Christian, I think God’s message to us is simple. He wants us to love him and to show that love by loving and helping others. All of Jesus’ lessons and teachings can be tied to that simple theme. It is simple and yet so very hard. What have you done this week to love and honor God? What have you done this week to love and help others? What worries me is that some people get so wrapped up in following other messages they have gleaned from the Bible that they often overlook or directly contradict these essential truths. While the Bible and its teaching are incredibly complex, one can find the truth by simply studying Jesus’ teachings and actions. There is truth in the simple question–What Would Jesus’ Do? It is simple and yet so very hard. What have you done this week to love and honor God? What have you done this week to love and help others? Of course the difficult challenge is the fact that by not doing these things we are just as bad as Jonah. We are not doing what God has told us to do. Don’t look now, but isn’t that a big whale coming up behind you? Source: https://www.mychristianlifeministries.com/2020/03/lessons-we-can-learn-from-jonah-and.html |
Nigeria’s 43 cabinet ministers have donated 50 per cent of their March 2020 salaries to support Federal Government’s efforts in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. This was contained in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja by the Special Assistant to the President, Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Segun Adeyemi. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, according to the statement, quoted the Minister of State for Transportation, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, who coordinated the donation, as saying it was a gesture of solidarity and support for the Federal Government’s efforts at tackling the disease. “This global virus outbreak will require nations, continents and smaller communities to pull together to contribute their resources and support one another. This will facilitate an early resolution of the problem,’’ Mohammed further quoted Senator Saraki as saying. According to the statement, the ministers also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his leadership role in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. That Holy Book, called the Bible, is the only Book like it. While many know that it is a holy Book, they do not know exactly what the Bible is, or why it was given. Once those two thoughts can be understood, then we will be able to answer the above question satisfactorily. In an effort to be able to answer both at the same time, this outline should help to answer the question, Is the Bible something we can use to live by? To this question, the only reasonable answer is a definite Yes. 1. Yes, Because Its Author Is Divine The Scriptures declare themselves to be of God. In II Timothy 3:16 the Bible tells us “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…” This word “inspiration” does not refer to the type of inspiration a poet, or a writer gets today. No, this was a special thing. It referred to the fact that “God-breathed” out the Scriptures from Himself. That is actually the Greek meaning of the word. In other words, the idea is that God so directed that “men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (II Peter 1:21), with the result that the words of the written Bible were inerrant (incapable of any error). In applying this truth a little further, it can be seen that God was able to produce an infallible Book because He is Himself infallible. He also knows all things (omniscient), and He knows what we will need to live for Him. 2. Yes, Because He Has Given Believers His Spirit This here is a point that needs to be very seriously considered. It is the dividing line between who can follow the teachings of the Bible, and who cannot. Having religion is not enough, and having the Ten Commandments is not enough to please God. He requires that we be made new by His Spirit – new, in the sense that our old way of life, and thoughts, are forsaken, and He moves in after baptism – and forgives the past transgressions, and His presence transforms the believer. Apart from this transformation that He makes in us, there can be no salvation. Christ died to bring us forgiveness, and redemption, and a new life – a life through the Spirit of God, and of His Son is us. His Spirit enables the believer to do what he could not do before. 3. Yes, Because It Covers All The Bases Should the believer today live by the Bible? Yes, and he can, because God knew everything that he would ever face – through all the ages of the earth. The Bible was given, first to point mankind to the Savior, Christ, and then so “that the man of God may be perfect (mature), throughly furnished unto all good works” – this comes right after the above verse on inspiration. It is a Book that perfects the believer, and makes him so that God might be able to bless the life. 4. Yes, Because It Brings Blessing From Him What a joy the believer has who seeks to be guided by the Bible! They are specially blessed by God Himself. In Psalm 1, the Bible tells us that, if a believer will walk different from those around him, and according to the Bible, that God will bless him – and he will be happy (not necessarily trouble free). In fact, the promise goes, if that believer will stay in the Bible, and daily think on its teachings with the intent to live by them, then God will bless them. His blessing will be compared to making them “like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (Psalm 1:1-3). 5. Yes, Because It Prepares Us To Meet Him My final point is this, that the Bible should be followed because He gave it to prepare us. In the Bible we read of His love, and of His Sacrifice that Christ paid for us to be able to live with Him one day. Apart from some necessary do’s and don’ts, the Bible is basically a letter of love – to the believer. When a believer follows the Bible, then the Spirit can guide him better, and give that person a greater joy and peace. Trouble comes so often for the believer – because we are not following Him. Obedience strengthens our relationship with Him. When a person loves God with all their heart, it is never an issue because then we will understand that all He wants us to do is because of love, and it will enable us to draw closer to Him in love. Following Him prepares us to live apart from sin, and in a sinless environment – Heaven itself. David declared the condition of the believer who follows the Word carefully: “Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart” (Psalm 119:2). President’s office fumigated President Muhammadu Buhari says he is on top of ensuring that Nigerians are kept safe from the coronavirus pandemic. Buhari gave the assurance yesterday through a tweet by his spokesman, Femi Adesina. Adesina, on his twitter handle@FemAdesina, was reacting to an audio report suggesting that Buhari and his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, had been flown out for medical reasons. The presidential spokesman said those spreading lies were people with diseased minds incapable of clean and edifying thoughts. His tweet read: “Why do some people imagine vain things and concoct lies and evil? Simple, their minds are diseased, and incapable of clean and edifying thoughts. “President Buhari is on top of ensuring that Nigerians are kept safe from Covid-19. The good work continues.” President Buhari, who had tested negative for coronavirus, stayed at his official residence yesterday. His deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, who also tested negative, is still in self-isolation at home, while holding meetings on teleconferencing. Meanwhile, a comprehensive fumigation of offices in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, commenced yesterday as part of measures to halt the spread of coronavirus. Fumigation experts, who arrived yesterday, would fumigate the environment in State House, including the floors, corridors, and key pathways. Personnel of the Department of State Service (DSS) were seen enforce the restriction measures in the presidency. Buhari, in another statement by his media aide, Garba Shehu, yesterday also called for more compliance with regulations and restrictions on movement and gatherings for the safety of all citizens. He reassured that government directives would not affect production and distribution of food, medications, medical equipment and other essentials as the nation wades through the global health challenge, which already portends dire economic strains. He said that the collective effort of all Nigerians would make a historic difference in checking the spread of COVID-19, rehabilitating those already affected and keeping citizens alive. He called on all leaders across the country, including religious and traditional leaders, to further support the federal and state governments in the ongoing sensitization programmes on the need to stay at home, keep a safe distance in the public, and dissuade citizens from panic buying and rumour mongering. He also directed all relevant agencies and regulators to provide enabling environment for industries to sustain their operations by ensuring reasonable access to industrial supplies and inputs like water, fuel, gas and essential infrastructure and relaxing of stringent laws. The Federal Government says it is considering stopping inter-state and inter-town travels, except for essential services, among measures to stop spread of coronavirus (Covid-19). The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at a media briefing to give update on the measures being taken by the government to tackle the pandemic. “We are considering tougher measures to stop the exportation of the disease to states that do not have it and minimise spread. “The possible measures include, stopping inter-state/inter-town travels, except for essential services and closing all motor parks and inter-state rail stations. “Already, all train movements nationwide have been stopped. “We are also considering using fire fighting and other adaptable vehicles and personnel to fumigate cities and towns,” he said. The minister stressed that time is running out and there is the need to take urgent and more aggressive measures at preventing the pandemic. “We have a short window within which to stop this pandemic or face an explosion in terms of the cases. We cannot afford to be complacent,” he said. Mohammed confirmed that the strategies so far taken at containing the pandemic were working, though there is still a long way to go. “We have taken very bold measures in stopping international flights into the country. “We hail the state governments that have taken equally bold measures in their states, which include the closure of markets and the prohibition of large congregations. “However, we are determined to be more aggressive in enforcing the measures aimed at containing the spread of the virus. “The measures are; Social distancing, Contact tracing, Testing, Isolation of suspected cases and ensuring that our messaging gets down to the grassroots,” he said. Mohammed hailed the decision of five domestic airlines; Air Peace, Aero, Azman, Dana and Arik to suspend their flight operations. He said the suspension was a boost for the efforts of the government to check the spread of the pandemic. Some in the congregation in Galatia were hawking a tenet of salvation by works. Paul asks and answers three stunner inquiries of those Galatians who were attempting to hawk this regulation. These three inquiries and their answers left their salvation by works message speechless. You recall, obviously, that Paul accepted that Jesus' blood dealt with the wrongdoing issue for mankind. Presently here are his three explosive inquiries and their undeniable answers. Question #1: "Did the Galatians get the Spirit by crafted by the law or by the becoming aware of confidence?" Galatians 3:2. As it were, would you be able to work to get the Spirit or is that a result of accepting on Jesus and getting Him (by confidence) as your own guardian angel? Obviously, getting the Spirit stops by confidence after accepting Jesus as deliverer. Works have nothing to do with it. Paul's rationale, at that point, powers the end that works of the law have nothing to do with the expulsion of our blame and sentiments of shamefulness for our wrongdoings. This is exclusively through Jesus' blood which is God's preeminent demonstration of beauty. The blood of Jesus is appropriated by confidence and not by works by any stretch of the imagination Question #2: "Since they began by the Spirit, what makes them figure they can change from the Spirit to the substance to proceed with their Christian experience? What makes them figure they can change from the Spirit to the carnal works of the Law to complete out their Christian experience?" Galatians 3:3. They can't. In this way, Jesus' blood, concerned us by the Spirit through confidence, will deal with our blame and shamefulness issue. Thus, Christians who rest and trust in Jesus' blood won't be brought under servitude for dishonor brought about by the blame of their transgressions. Therefore, they won't let these sentiments of blame and dishonor meddle with God's endowments of recuperating, flourishing, family prosperity and salvation contained in the Abrahamic contract for them. Question #3: "Did the person who serves the Spirit to them and works wonders among them do these things by the knowing about confidence or by crafted by the law?" Galatians 3:5. Obviously, he did these things by confidence and not by crafted by the law. Paul's rationale, here, powers the end that (1) since these Galatians got the Spirit by confidence and not by works of the Law, (2) since they can't change from the Spirit to works of the Law to keep up their Christian life and (3) since the ones serving the Spirit and works wonders among them keep on doing them by confidence and not by works of the Law, at that point neither can the Galatians subjectively change from salvation by confidence in Jesus to salvation by works of the Law. Neither would they be able to endeavor to follow any blend of confidence and works. From the previous, clearly Paul accepted that Jesus' blood dealt with everything. His blood was the finesse of God in real life. His blood dealt with the blame and sentiments of dishonor for every one of our transgressions. To add one thing to this brilliant recipe as any strict work that we should do to get our blame and dishonor expelled would void God's effortlessness and render Jesus' demise pointless and good for nothing. Never let the fiend or his group reveal to you that you can't have your Abrahamic gifts of mending, success, family prosperity and salvation on account of sentiments of blame and disgracefulness. source: http://www.mychristianlifeministries.com |
Governors from the North-West states on Wednesday converged in Kaduna to review their security approaches in tackling the common challenges of banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities in the region. All the governors of the seven North-West states were in attendance, except Kano, who was represented by the Deputy Governor. Also in attendance is Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger state, whose state shares same security challenges as the bordering North-West States. Declaring the meeting open before they went into a closed-door session today, the Chairman of the North-West Governor’s forum and Governor of Katsina state, Aminu Bello Masari said, while the region had succeeded in fighting cattle rustling, new challenges of kidnapping and banditry have emerged. He said the meeting was also to plan on ways to arrest the situation, explaining that, the acts of banditry, unwanted destruction of lives and property in the states and the nation at large were worrisome. Governor Masari however said the meeting, which is a continuation of what started since 2016 when the states were faced with cattle rustling, would be reviewing what had happen and the next step to be taken as governors and state’s security chiefs. According to Masari, “We were able to achieve certain level of success with regards to cattle rustling, but over time, the criminality has developed into kidnapping, banditry and unwanted and unwarranted criminal activities within our states. “So, we thought it is wise we should come to Kaduna, the old headquarters of Northern Nigeria to review what has been done. We are here to address North West and Niger state and also review what had happen and the next step to be taken as governors and security chiefs who are saddle with the responsibility of protecting life’s and properties of the people.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/north-west-governors-meet-in-kaduna-over-killings-banditry.html |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the Integrated Payroll Personal Information System (IPPIS) was not the only reason for which the union embarked on the ongoing two-week warning strike. EDITOR’S PICK: Strike: Again, FG, ASUU fail to reach agreement as govt makes new proposal ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, on Wednesday said other issues which led to the industrial action include Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it had with the federal government in 2009, 2013, 2017 and Memorandum of Action (MoA) in 2019. Other issues concerning its members which are yet to be addressed by the government are the visitation panel report, mainstreaming of salaries, revitilisation of universities, and earned academic allowances. But Prof. Biodun lamented that outstanding issues as contained in the MoA were overshadowed by the issue of the IPPIS. He said: “IPPIS is not the only issue. We did say last time that we had a memorandum of action that we are tracking. What that means to us is that government actually ignited the ongoing crisis. Not when government introduced IPPIS and tried to scale it through dialogue but when it resorted to the use of force.” He added that “Government officials courted the crisis by stopping the payment of salaries of our members citing Mr President’s budget speech as a directive, and they insists that universities must enrol in IPPIS platform at a time we thought we were engaging ourselves.” Recall that the FG and the ASUU had on Thursday, last week reached an interim agreement to integrate both the IPPIS with University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) after proper review. After over 8 hours of meetings between the FG and the ASUU on Tuesday, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige said the Federal Government had tabled a new proposal regarding the impasse over the Integrated Payroll Personal Information System (IPPIS) enrolment for members of the union. “Some of these issues that are outstanding, the ASUU’s team will take them back to their bigger council to be on the same page with them before they get back to government. “We have also agreed that the tentative time to get back to government would be before the week runs out. We expect ASUU to get back to government in writing and if there is need for other meeting on that, you’ll be informed,” Ngige said. Prof. Ogunyemi had, in his remark, noted that they have improved on where they stopped in the previous meeting. He said that they had what they can call “concrete proposals to our members.” “But, as we usually say, those of us here can’t make final pronouncement on any of the proposals. We have assured government’s team that we will report faithfully to our principals and get back to government accordingly,” the ASUU President said. However, at the end of the meeting, both the FG and ASUU did not reveal to journalists what the proposal was. Daily Trust reports that the two-week warning strike, which the union declared, will elapse on Monday next week. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ippis-not-only-reason-for-strike-ASUU.html |

We are all potential Ex-es: ex-student, ex-director, ex-lecturer, ex-senator, ex-governor, ex-president, ex-oba, ex-emir…. The inimitable Zik famously reminded us when he had a spat with Ukpabi Asika that Ex was an inevitable prefix for any human being as was evidenced by the fact that a certain young man who would someday become an ex-Administrator, was the son of an ex-postmaster! So, what’s so apocalyptic about Sanusi Lamido Sanusi joining the ranks of ex-potentates? Nothing? Everything! Don’t ever think that bell you are hearing is tolling for the former Emir of Kano. No. It could be signalling the beginning of a comprehensive demystification of traditional rulership by plebeians holding tenured political power. In centuries past, no plebeian messed with the traditional institution. The halo of nobility, the sheer vastness of a prince’s hereditary powers, rights and privileges, made the subject know his place. Yesterday’s subjects are today’s political sovereign. They make no pretences to sophistication. They load a gun to kill a spider. When you dethrone a monarch and then deprive him of his liberty, forcefully banishing him to a place without electricity and potable water, you are playing god. If it was all a public relations Olympics, the calm dignity with which Sanusi handled the humiliation made people all over the world admire his chutzpa and hand him the gold medal. Life and its many puzzles! Why is it that for some men and women, “their sleep is taken away unless they cause some to fall”? What do you do about an ego that knows no satiation? As the Preacher in the Good Book timelessly says, “All the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full… The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear content with hearing… there is nothing new under the sun”. The Yoruba have a poem that says just that. “The horse struts and frets and then dies. Being a veteran walker is no immunity to getting lost. Nothing new under the sun. I’ve seen kings reduced to slaves; and servants who mounted the throne. Haven’t my eyes beheld both river and sea? Haven’t I seen a hunchback on spindly legs, and a midget climbing a ladder to add condiment to the soup pot? Tell me, has anyone ever started a building from the roof? The new Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, is a cousin of his predecessor. As royal intrigues go, when the dust is settled the sword will be sheathed and brother will embrace brother. That is the way of princes. Eventually, outsiders will realise that all they can ever be in palace politics is outsiders. Our very own Nobel prize winning Kongi was not amused by the scandalous extra-judicial detention of the former emir. He put the emir’s travail down to his progressive stance: “Emir Sanusi was a one-man EFCC sanitisation squad in the banking system, taking on the powerful corrupters of that institution…. “Most important of all, and most pertinently for the nation, Sanusi was one of the early warning voices against religious extremism whose bitter fruits the nation is currently reaping…. The doors of enlightened society remain wide open to Muhammad Sanusi. As for his current crowing Nemesis, a different kind of gates remain yawning to receive him when, as must, the days of governorship immunity finally come to an end.” Support for Sanusi is not limited to radical voices. Veteran technocrat Alhaji Ahmed Joda penned a panegyric in support of the ex-emir: “The purpose of this letter to you is not to commiserate with you, because I know that you must have known the likely consequences of the principled position you have taken. The reality we must face in Northern Nigeria is that the evil forces of feudalism that have kept us in bondage for so long are still there and fighting. You have been the only voice that has been telling us this truth….” It is easy to kick a man given a pin-fall by fate, or piss on the grave of a fallen warrior. Dead men don’t bite. Real friends show up when you are in life’s valley. Say what you will, I would rather have a friend like Nasir el Rufai when the chips are down. In the midst of all the turmoil, conspiracy theories have surfaced to the effect that the dethronement is but a political sleight-of-hand to propel Sanusi to Nigeria’s presidency in 2023. Caution! Let’s separate the issues. Political succession is totally different from fundamental human rights. Sanusi is not my next president. My views on power rotation are well documented. The ex-emir will go down in history as a champion for the rights of the poorest of the poor. He advocated for a new Northern Nigeria where old backward practices such as the almajiri system and irresponsible parenting will be abandoned. His was the voice crying out in the desert, lift my people up from the cesspit of penury. The attempt to demonise him after dethronement through various allegations, including one on religious fundamentalism, is dead on arrival. The same fate will befall the vilification of El Rufai on account of his loyalty to Sanusi. Please quote me: Modern challenges can never be resolved with a resort to medieval solutions. Christopher Hitchens’ Q&A may someday apply to the ex-Kings College boy who’s now an ex-king. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says 15 corpses, including a family of four, have been recovered from the scene of Sunday’s explosion which occurred at Abule Ado, Trade Fair axis of Lagos state. No fewer than 60 students of Bethlehem Girls College located within the area who sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incident were also taken to the Nigerian Navy Hospital in Ojo Cantonment. Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Acting Coordinator of NEMA in Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the couple and their two sons were caught by the explosion on their way to church around about 9:00a.m. on Sunday. Farinloye said over 50 buildings, including Bethlehem Girls College and a popular hotel, were damaged in the explosion. He said: “The resulting fire later spread to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) oil pipeline passing through the area even though the pipeline has been shutdown as a precautionary measure. “The fire was eventually extinguished about 3.30p.m. through the combined efforts of officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and Nigerian Navy Fire Tender.” Also, Rear Admiral Oladele Daji, Staff Officer, Western Naval Command, told newsmen that the students were stabilised at the Navy Hospital, adding that those who have fully recovered would be discharged soon. Daji said although the cause of the incident was still unknown, some residents of the area told security operatives that there was a large number of industrial gas cylinders close to where the explosion occurred. He said the Nigerian Navy in collaboration with other security agencies had began clearing the pipeline right of way across Lagos State, adding that the government should revoke the Certificate of Occupancy of houses sited very close to pipelines. On his part, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osayintolu, Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said the government would carry out a thorough investigation to unravel the cause of the explosion. “Our advice to people is that there is no need to panic. We are on top of the situation and the fire has been put out through collaboration by the various agencies. “We can neither smell gas nor petrol, we can’t really say this is what led to the fire. “We are still waiting for the outcome of the result to know the cause of the fire outbreak,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. One of the victims of the incident, Mr Abayomi Abeyi, said his building was severely damaged while his wife sustained injuries from the explosion. Abeyi, who is the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Mile 2, Amuwo Odofin Branch, appealed to the Lagos State Government to come to the aid of the victims of the unfortunate incident.
