ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. – Last week, casketmaker Fletcher Collins loaded a customized tribute memorial into a rented van before he and a couple of friends drove cross-country from his business in North Carolina's Mount Olive community of Elizabethtown to Los Angeles. Collins’ destination over the roughly 2,260-mile trip is a public memorial service Monday for basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna “Gigi,” at the Staples Center nearly a month after their deaths in a helicopter crash in California Jan. 26. There, in front of the center on Tuesday, he unveiled to the public what he calls his masterpiece, the “Staples Center,” which he dedicates to the families of Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter and the seven other people killed in the accident. Kobe Bryant was a longtime Los Angeles Laker, an NBA franchise that plays its home games at the Staples Center. Since his death at age 41, the nation has mourned the loss of the NBA Hall of Famer, who was an 18-time All-Star and 15-time member of the All-NBA Team. Bryant, Collins said, was one of his favorite professional basketball players. “I loved what he brought to the game,” he said. Collins, who has built customized designer caskets for roughly a decade over his 47 years, said social media led to what he called this humbling assignment. Through social networking, he said, a friend of Bryant’s family reached out to ask if Collins could create some type of memorial art to honor Kobe and the other victims. “I tried to capture everything about him,” said Collins, who also is an assistant pastor at Greater Temple Holiness Church in Elizabethtown. Painted largely in Laker purple and gold, the memorial casket is overlain with a mock-up of the Staples Center hardwood court, complete with miniature basketball goals on each end and 24-second clocks. One side is trimmed with what is intended to be the Los Angeles skyline. Source: yahoo.com

Senator Abu Ibrahim, the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Council for New Nigeria initiative (CNNi) says President Muhammadu Buhari will preserve his legacy after leaving office if he saves the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from disintegration. The Senator said this when he led the BoT of CNNi, a group formerly known as National Committee for Buhari Support Groups (NCBSG) before and during the last general elections to pay a courtesy visit to President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for the enactment of laws against all forms of injustice in marriages by state governments. Emir Sanusi spoke on Thursday at the Joint National Conference of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Future Assured Initiative on “Repositioning the Muslim Family for National Development” held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He recommended the arrest of any irresponsible father that sends out his child as Almajiri to beg for alms. “Don’t send your children to go and beg; Stop treating Almajiri as criminals. You should rather go and arrest the father because he is responsible for Almajiri. You are not allowed to abandon your children on the streets,” the Emir said. He added that the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, and himself had packaged a set of laws to address some of the family issues to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state for onward transmission to the state House of Assembly for consideration and passage into law. Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari; First Lady, Mrs. Aisha M. Buhari with the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II; Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III and the Ooni of Ife, H.I.M. Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II at the Joint National Conference on Repositioning the Muslim Family for National Development organised by the Nigerian Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs and the Future Assured Initiative in Abuja on February 20, 2020. The traditional ruler recalled that 12 States in the North had adopted the Shariah laws in 1999 without any need to reform the laws outside of the Muslim Criminal law. He advised men to take full responsibility for their marriages, especially in economic terms, by marrying only when they can take care of a wife, and having children they can cater for. “Everyday, wives are complaining about their husbands who claim their rights but abandon their responsibilities in marriage; women being divorced with their husbands for not taking care of the children and those children ending up on the streets, engaging in drugs, political thuggery, violent extremism. “I can spend 100 years saying that it is wrong and un-Islamic for a man to beat his wife, but it is the governor and the State House of Assembly that should pass the law, it is the courts and the Police that will make sure that the woman gets justice. The scholars and Emirs cannot do that. “So, these groups of human beings are those who will stand to answer to Allah if there is no justice. “The traditional and religious leaders have an obligation to ask for justice, but those with the political powers have an obligation to put in place the processes that will make sure that these justices are complied with,” he said. Justice S.B. Na-Malam of the Kano State High Court has granted the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, leave to file a motion seeking judicial review of the preliminary report issued by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) asking for his suspension pending investigations into allegations of financial misappropriation. The court said because the case was transferred from Court One, it has to be started afresh, saying one of the two ex-parte applications filed by the emir on January 21, 2020 was an abuse of court process as it was a duplication of the earlier one filed on June 6, 2019. Justice Na-Mallam said while he disregarded the second application, he has considered the first one and granted same. By this ruling, the emir has satisfied the requirement of seeking leave and has obtained the leave, thereby making his case ripe for hearing at the next adjourned date. Meanwhile, the court has restrained the PCACC from proceeding with its investigations against the emir pending when the substantive matter would have been heard. The case was adjourned to March 10, 2020 for hearing of the motion on notice. In a similar development, the case filed by Alhaji Munir Sanusi (Danburam) and four others, where they wanted the court to declare PCACC incompetent to investigate the emir, could not proceed as one of the defendants in the matter was not ready. The case was adjourned to April 8, 2020 for the hearing to continue. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/emir-sanusi-to-challenge-anti-corruption-commissions-report.html |

Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum, has declared Monday, February 24, 2020 for statewide fasting and prayers alongside an intensified offensive by Nigeria’ military and volunteer forces against Boko Haram insurgents. Zulum disclosed this on Wednesday in a six-minute broadcast to the people of the state. He, however, said there will be no public holiday on Monday next week. The insurgents have lately resumed serial attacks on communities in different parts of Borno state with the latest in Chibok on Tuesday after previous one in Auno last Sunday. The governor, after enumerating ongoing collaboration with the military, mass recruitment, equipping and deployment of thousands of volunteers in the Civilian JTF, hunters and vigilantes, said his call for prayers was a strange but necessary decision made based on popular wish of Borno people. “Even though this decision is based on the popular demand of our people, some observers may rightly argue that it is a strange call. But then, Borno has been befallen with a strange evil since 2009, and sometimes, strange ailments require strange approaches. “As your Governor, I hereby declare Monday the 24th of February 2020 as a day of devotion to pray for the return of peace in Borno. I intend to fast on that day and I appeal to every one of us in Borno, who can, to join in that simple, but pricelessly rewarding spiritual endeavour. “I also appeal for the sacrifices of all other well-meaning friends and associates of Borno who can, to join us in fasting on Monday, insha’ Allah, for the restoration of peace in Borno state and rest of Nigeria. “I urge all of us to be steadfast in prayers. But in doing that, we certainly do not need to congregate in open fields for dramas. “It would also not matter whether we are within or outside Borno State and whether we are at work places, markets or not. There will be no public holiday; after all, God is everywhere, at home and at work. “Let us pray to Him with the purest intention, total devotion, submission and unwavering faith. “His eminence, the Shehu of Borno has assured me of his call on Imams of all mosques across the 27 local government areas of the state to recite the Qunut throughout the five congregational prayers on Monday. Leaders of the Christian community have also assured me of special prayer sessions in churches. “However, as citizens, we are all free to pray in the best ways we prefer,” the Governor said. Daily Trust reports that Zulum began his broadcast by recalling recent security threats posed by the Boko Haram. The governor urged citizens to pray for those killed by insurgents, armed forces and volunteers who died fighting the insurgents and troops currently in battle fronts. The Governor also called on citizens to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari whom he described as sincerely committed to ending the Boko Haram insurgency. “We should pray for our President, Muhammadu Buhari, whose sincerity in the fight against Boko Haram has never been in doubt. “Fellow citizens, as your Governor, I testify that President Buhari is supremely dedicated to ending the Boko Haram insurgency. The evidence of the President’s dedication is the military’s freeing of thousands of abducted citizens and the liberation of many communities in Borno State hitherto under the sovereign administration of insurgents. Majority of these communities were rebuilt and are now occupied by resettled citizens. “These gains for humanity, are what the Boko Haram insurgents hope and are determined to reverse. We cannot let them succeed. “We must fight and pray for good to triumph over evil. “May God free Borno and the rest of Nigeria from insurgents and all enemies of public peace and security,” the governor said.
