Foreign Affairs › Man Arrested After Faking Heart Attack In 20 Restaurants To Avoid Paying Bill by AImiron(op): 11:44am On Oct 21, 2023 |
A con man living in Spain has been arrested for faking heart attacks on 20 different occasions to get out of paying for his meals at various restaurants.
The 50-year-old man, a Lithuanian national identified as Aidas J., lives in the southeastern port city of Alicante and has acted like a “typical Russian tourist” while he ordered several items off the menu before refusing to pay the bill.
Aidas was first arrested for his scams in Nov. 2022 and his most recent encounter with the law was on Sept. 19, according to Spain’s EFE news agency.
In his latest target, the shameless scammer visited the El Buen Comer in the historic district of Alicante, Spain for dinner and ordered a seafood paella and two whiskeys, which cost roughly $36.80
When he finished his meal and drinks, the man attempted to leave but was stopped by restaurant staff who told him he had to pay.
At first Aidas, who has gotten the nickname “El Gastrojeta” said he needed to go back to his hotel to get the money.
He then claimed he felt “unwell” and threw himself to the ground
It was very theatrical, he pretended to faint and slumped himself down on the floor,” Moisés Doménech, the restaurant’s owner told the US Sun
The restaurant staff didn’t buy the man’s antics and called the cops who recognized the scammer from his prior arrests and once again took the man into custody.
Aidas confirmed his identity to the police when they arrived at the restaurant and requested an ambulance, but the officers verified he was fine and took him to the police station.
Aidas, usually dressed in designer clothing and talked by mixing several languages, would usually order a Russian Salad, “which he seems to like quite a bit,” an officer told Spain’s news agency.
One of the officers who arrested Aidas multiple times claims the man smiles when the police arrive and “he sees himself unpunished,” because he doesn’t care about spending a couple of days in jail before his short trial before the judge, according to the EFE news agency
Doménech has sent the man’s photo to the other nearby restaurants warning them not to serve the scammer.
Several of the local restaurants filed a joint criminal complaint against Aidas, seeking he be jailed for up to two years.
Aidas has been jailed for 42 days because of two unpaid fines, according to the Sun. NYPOST

Ståle Solbakken (Norway Head Coach) : "If you ask me who I think will win the Ballon d'Or, I will say Messi will win it. Thanks to his World Cup triumph. It still has an impact."
Rodri: "Who will win the Ballon d'Or? Leo Messi."
Kevin De Bruyne: "Lionel Messi is the Best. I think he will win the Ballon d'Or."
Julián Álvarez: " The Best is Messi. He will win the Ballon d'Or."

Pep Guardiola has stated that he would love for Erling Haaland to win the Ballon d'Or this year but he realizes Messi is a more likely candidate.Speaking to the press ahead of Manchester City's Premier League match on Saturday against Brighton & Hove Albion, Guardiola opined that Haaland should win the Ballon d'Or as City won the treble last season. He said:" Haaland should win - Yes. We won the treble and he scored a million goals."However, Guardiola is aware of the fact that Haaland might not be able to pip Messi to football's most prestigious individual prize. The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner fired Argentina to the World Cup and received the Golden Ball at the competition. He also won the Ligue 1 title with PSG last season. Messi scored 21 goals and provided 20 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions for the Parisians last season. Meanwhile, Haaland netted 52 goals and laid out nine assists in 53 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City last term.Guadiola added: " The Ballon d'Or has to be two sections. ONE FOR MESSI, and after look for the others. THE WORST SEASON OF MESSI IS THE BEST FOR THE REST.” “ Realistically I want Haaland to have it cause he helped us achieve what we achieved, I would love it. BUT MESSI WON THE WORLD CUP. It’s good players here are up for the award, it makes us so proud.” The winner of the much-coveted award will be announced at the Ballon d'Or ceremony on October 30.SOURCENlfpmod mynd44 frontpage boss

Foreign Affairs › Putin Spotted In China With Nuclear Briefcase Nearby In Rare Footage by AImiron(op): 8:35pm On Oct 19, 2023 |
Video of Russian President Vladimir Putin released Wednesday shows him arriving in China with what appears to be the so-called nuclear "football," which he can use to order a nuclear strike.
"This is not a coincidence," Rebekah Koffler, president of Doctrine & Strategy Consulting and a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer, told Fox News Digital.
"The Kremlin almost certainly deliberately orchestrated the filming of Putin’s version of the ‘nuclear football’ – which is almost never done — and had the Russian media, which the Kremlin controls, highlight the fact that ‘certain suitcases’ always accompany the Russian president on trips," she said.
Putin visited China at a time when he needed to drum up more support for his cause at home as his invasion of Ukraine drags on, having lasted 20 months longer than the roughly two weeks his advisors suggested necessary to capture Kyiv and then take control of the country.
A political consultant and a Kremlin official told The Moscow Times that the trip aimed to rally the Russian public behind Putin and his invasion, but Putin returned without any major deals - for either energy or agriculture - that he had hoped to achieve.
The briefcase remains close to Putin at all times but rarely has ever been shown – especially in such a blatant and focused way. The officer carrying the case is from the naval branch and is known as the "Cheget" after Mount Cheget in the Caucasus Mountains.
Koffler explained that the display is yet another reminder from Putin that the "nuclear card" remains "on the table" should Ukraine try to take Crimea or other annexed territories, such as Donetsk or Luhansk
The Kremlin correspondent of state news agency RIA said in a Telegram post under the video that there are "certain suitcases" that Putin needs to "complete" his trips. Another clip shows the same officers again following Putin as he leaves a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The briefcase is a secure communication tool that links the president to his military top brass and thence to rocket forces via the highly secret "Kazbek" electronic command-and-control network. Kazbek supports another system known as "Kavkaz."
Putin has repeatedly commented on his country’s nuclear capabilities and made thinly-veiled threats to use nuclear weapons throughout the Ukraine campaign, but the longer the conflict goes on, the more blatant his rhetoric and displays have been as well.
"The Kremlin threatens to use nukes if there’s an attempt on Putin’s life," Koffler said. "The Russian nuclear doctrine could be interpreted as permitting such a move — "the very existence the Russian state at risk" clause — as Putin is the Commander-in-Chief of Russia," noting that the Russian state is synonymous with Putin’s "regime."
Koffler noted that the flagrant display follows an International Criminal Court warrant for Putin’s arrest on charges of abducting Ukrainian children – a charge levied against him by several organizations and Ukrainian officials. She argued that Putin wants to "intimidate anyone" who would consider arresting him and "give such authorities a pause … by creating in their minds what Moscow might do." FOXNEWS

Sports › Lionel Messi Named World’s Most Marketable Athlete For 2023 By SportsPro by AImiron(op): 10:08pm On Oct 18, 2023 |
Argentine soccer legend Lionel Messi has been named as the world’s most marketable athlete for 2023. The Inter Miami forward tops SportsPro’s annual list of the world’s 50 Most Marketable Athletes (50MM) for a second time, finishing ahead of National Basketball Association (NBA) icon LeBron James.
Messi’s return to the top of the rankings, having previously reached number one in 2020, sees him become only the second athlete in 50MM history to take top spot on two occasions.
US Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) striker Alex Mogan is third, with NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo and Morgan’s USWNT teammate Megan Rapinoe completing the top five.
Last year’s number one, Portuguese soccer great Cristiano Ronaldo, slips to 27th in the list. Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is another big mover, dropping out of the top 50 from number seven in 2022.
This year’s list also underlines the growing commercial influence and value of women’s sport. There are four women in the top ten and female athletes make up nearly 50 per cent of the top 50. US Open tennis champion Coco Gauff takes the title of the most marketable teenager, with the 19-year-old sitting in 12th place.
Soccer, basketball, tennis and motorsport have the greatest number of athletes in the top 50 but other major international sports are less well represented. Notably, no rugby players made the cut and while US athletes accounted for 26 per cent of the top 50 there are no players from Major League Baseball (MLB). College sports stars Angel Reese and Olivia Dunne also cracked the top 50 as the impact of name, image and likeness (NIL) rights continues to be felt.
Now in its 14th year, SportsPro’s 50MM list has once again been compiled with the support of NorthStar Solutions Group, which has developed an enhanced methodology to deliver the most comprehensive assessment of athlete marketability ever undertaken.
SportsPro and NorthStar Solutions Group’s expanded methodology assessed hundreds of global athletes across three key scoring pillars: Brand Strength, Total Addressable Market, and ECON – Triple Bottom Line.
For the first time, sophisticated qualitative research was integrated with quantitative marketability measurements, while comprehensive mathematical and statistical formulas from multiple data sources were then applied to determine the final rankings according to each athlete’s Total Marketability Score.
“This year’s 50 Most Marketable Athletes list follows the most comprehensive assessment of athlete marketability we’ve ever undertaken in the 14-year history of SportsPro’s annual ranking,” said Michael Long, editorial director at SportsPro.
“NorthStar’s robust methodology and rich, data-led marketability model has produced not only a compelling list in its own right, but a wealth of fascinating insights and storylines that highlight the ever-evolving trends shaping the sports marketing industry – from the gathering commercial momentum in women’s sport to the growing importance of authenticity and shared purpose in athlete-brand relationships.”
Chris Collins, president at NorthStar Solutions Group added: “This year, we’ve gone even further by introducing innovative additions such as the qualitative research approach, Social Media Ethnography, and a market research perspective that views athlete brands in a sports category similar to how we view brands in a product category. These enhancements have allowed us to unearth deeper athlete stories and broaden our understanding of marketability across entire sports ecosystems.
“As we continue to sponsor the 50 Most Marketable Athlete List, our commitment remains unwavering. We aim to adapt and evolve with the dynamic sports industry, constantly striving to set new standards in delivering a comprehensive understanding of an athlete’s marketability.” SOURCE

OGC Nice is a French professional football club based in Nice, France. Nice is currently second placed in the Uber Eats Ligue 1.
OGC Nice have suspended Youcef Atal until further notice after a social media post regarding the ongoing situation in Gaza.
Mainz suspended Anwar El Ghazi on Tuesday
The is the club’s official statements:
Upon his return from the national selection of Algeria, where he has been since October 9, the leaders of OGC Nice convened and exchanged with Youcef Atal. OGC Nice hears that the player acknowledged his mistake by quickly removing the sharing of the publication and offered his written and public apologies.
Nevertheless, given the nature of the shared publication and its seriousness, the club took the decision to immediately take the first disciplinary sanctions against the player, prior to those that could be decided by the sports and judicial authorities. As such, the club has decided to suspend Youcef Atal until further notice.
We would like to emphasize that the reputation and unity of the OGC Nice result from the behavior of all its employees, which must be in accordance with the values defended by the institution. As in its message last Friday, where OGC Nice recalled its firm commitment to peace prevail over any other consideration.
