We’ve restored hope of our people, rebuilt our economy to withstand future volatility, says Obaseki The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration has, in the last seven and a half years, undertaken bold reforms and programmes that have restored the hope of the Edo people and laid a solid foundation for economic stability and growth in the State. Obaseki, while speaking to journalists in Benin City, said when his government came into office, the State’s economy was in the doldrums, but reforms by his administration have rebooted the economy and fortified it against future volatility. According to him, “If you think about the journey, it has been fulfilling. When we came into office in 2016, the economy was in the doldrums. “So, there was a need to rethink the economy and see how it can grow and bring prosperity, improve livelihoods, and secure a better life and future for our citizens. Also, there were serious social challenges. It was like a human catastrophe in Edo because if you recall, at a point in time, our people had lost hope, especially our young people; nobody wanted to stay back and start a life in the State. “We were ranked number one in terms of human trafficking and irregular migration. A report we got from the International Office of Migration (IOM) in January 2017 revealed that we had about 30,000 young Edo boys and girls in Libya, trying to cross to Europe. I remember then, every wreck, every ship, and every vessel that moved from Tangier to Sicily or wherever always had our people. “That was the setting in which we came. So, the first thing was to restore hope from the perspective of building an economy that the people could benefit from and also restore hope by showing our young people that home is good. I mean, nowhere else is better than your home.” Outlining the gains of the reforms by his administration, Obaseki further stated, “Over the last seven years, what have we done? Let’s look at the numbers. Seven years ago, nobody wanted to stay, you barely had one flight coming to Benin. But today, we have about 10 flights a day. “Seven years ago, the place was dark and dingy; infrastructure was not great. Today, the infrastructure has improved tremendously, from government infrastructure to all our public-user infrastructure. From a situation where we were the centre for mass migration to one in which Edo is no longer on the list of top ten states where people migrate from. “If anything, people are now migrating to Edo State. In terms of economic growth, from a position where we must have been about 10 or 11 in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ranking with about $11 billion then, today, we are in the top six and have about $25 billion in GDP.” He added, “In terms of investment inflow, we have seen investment inflow in every sector, from energy, agriculture, technology, and education, among others. So, overall, we are much better off today than we were eight years ago and the evidence is there to show.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/weve-restored-hope-of-our-people-rebuilt-our-economy-to-withstand-future |
How we transited from subsistence to large-scale agriculture in Edo, now have over 70,000ha oil palm plantation under cultivation – Obaseki ...Cassava, maize, others now being farmed commercially The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state government has moved the State from subsistence to large-scale agriculture upon building on the learnings of the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP). The governor, in a chat with journalists, noted that learnings from running large-scale oil palm plantations have been transferred to developing commercial cassava farms used for manufacturing of flour and ethanol in the State. According to Obaseki, “We still produce food in Nigeria at the subsistence level, which is inefficient. It is sad because before the Civil War when we had commodity boards and people were investing in larger-scale farming, which was more efficient. Agriculture was the mainstay of the economy and we didn’t have crude oil at that time. So, subsistence farming for 200 million people is not just going to work. We have got to think about production on scale because we're a huge country – a large country with a lot of landmass. But do we have that culture of agriculture? We produce food like every part of Nigeria, but we don't do it efficiently. You have small farmers going in, doing their shifting cultivation.” On what the Edo State Government did differently, he said: “What we try to do in Edo is to think about how to cultivate large-scale farms. To start with, you have to go for the value crops like oil palm, rubber, and cocoa. We started from that end because of the advantage we have in attracting investors. We did a forest audit and realized that we had quite a lot of land that, unfortunately, had been deforested, which we could use for oil palm cultivation. “We then launched the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP). It was not about just giving out land, but a programme where we help you get land, survey the land, demarcate, go to the communities, deal with the communities, engage them, compensate those who you need to compensate, then do your nurseries, and get planting materials. Today, we have the largest agricultural programme on the continent, with more than 70,000 hectares of oil palm plantation. There are 7 to 8 investors, and everybody is producing.” He added, “What that does for us is that once we have people who now have the expertise to prepare the land for oil palm, I can then move them to help me prepare land for cassava, maize, and other crops. More importantly, what we have done as a government is to bring them in and organize them. My concern is my people, the citizens who are going to work with them. We focused more on developing capacity.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/how-we-transited-from-subsistence-to-large-scale-agriculture-in-edo-now-have |
Obaseki tasks Muslims to support govt programmes, ensure sustenance of devt’al strides The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has tasked Muslims in the State to continue to support government programmes and policies and take the right decisions to ensure sustainability of the development recorded by his administration across all sectors of the state’s economy The governor said this while receiving Muslim faithful in Benin City led by the Deputy Chief Imam, Alh Osahon Otokiti, during the traditional Sallah homage in Government House, Benin City. The governor who was represented by his Deputy, Engr Marvellous Omobayo said the Obaseki-led administration is committed to the well-being of Muslims in the State through the Muslim feeding programme, which is designed to ensure that the poor in society are given a sense of belonging. “As the celebration is all about sacrifice, Nigeria is a secular nation and everyone is free to practice his or her religion. As you practice your religion, let it reflect in your life so that people can be drawn to it through your way of life. “We should collaborate and make Edo State a peaceful place and make it habitable for all. I urge you all to continue to practice total submission to the will of Allah. “The governor holds the Muslims in high esteem. The governor is not here today because of his engagement outside the State. The launch of the Muslims feeding programme is not political but to get to the poorest of the poor in Edo State, be it Christian or Muslims. “This programme was devoid of any political linkages as all food items were procured by Muslims themselves without the involvement of politicians or political parties. The government trusts religious leaders to do right and just in the programme.” He noted that the feeding programme also helps in collating and improving the data of the poorest of the poor in the State. Chairman of the Edo State Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alh Abdulaziz Igbinidu, commended the Obaseki-led administration for his commitment to the wellbeing of Muslims, adding, “I want to thank the governor for his support to Muslims across the State. We will not take the support for granted and have enjoyed his efforts in the past seven and a half years. The governor has signed the CofO for the prayer ground and our land, which was encroached upon, has been returned to the Muslim community. We will continue to be grateful. The Deputy Chief Imam of the Benin Central Mosque, Alh Osahon Otokiti said, “The core virtues of this festival is absolute commitment, honesty, truthfulness, sincerity of purpose, obedience, self-denial, sacrifice, patience, tolerance, perseverance and endurance. |
Fathers’ Day: Obaseki salutes fathers for societal role, hails sacrifice, resilience The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended fathers for their enormous responsibilities in holding the society and contributing to societal growth. The governor, in a statement to commemorate Father’s Day, said, “I celebrate fathers for their immense contributions to societal development, holding the family unit together amid the hardship occasioned by the prevailing economic realities.” Obaseki noted, “Despite the economic difficulties, fathers have remained strong pillars of support in the family, toiling daily to make ends meet while juggling roles such as mentor, leader, protector, provider, and breadwinner. They deserve to be celebrated. “On this auspicious day set aside to acknowledge their gallantry, sacrifice, love, and resilience, we celebrate our fathers and assure them of our continued support to deliver on their duties on the home front with dignity, including the State’s civil and service reforms and increase in the minimum wage to N70, 000, the highest in the country.” He urged fathers, noting, “While we urge them, as the family’s reflective mirrors to imbue in their children the right values and character so as to ensure peace, stability, and harmony in our society, especially amid the electioneering campaigns, we will not relent at ongoing reforms to open up the economy so that our fathers would be actively engaged and are productive. Obaseki bags Kingdom Citizens’ Award for good governance The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has been honored by the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church Worldwide for his administration's fight against corruption and advocacy for good governance in the State. Presenting the award to the governor in Government House, Benin City, Baba Aladura of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide, Dr. David Bob-Manual commended the governor for executing impactful projects and implementing reforms that have transformed all the sectors of the State's economy. The leader of the church thanked Governor Obaseki for the massive food palliative for the people of the State through the Christian Feeding Programme in partnership with Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). He said, “The leadership of our church is in your State on pastoral duties and we thought it wise to pay you this courtesy visit and appreciate you for your exemplary leadership qualities which you have deployed to transform and develop Edo State. “We have heard of the laudable projects and programmes your administration has brought to the people of Edo State in the almost eight years of service to the people. On the lips of the people of Edo State, witnesses and testimonies are bound as your administration has touched the lives of Edo people. “You have executed projects and reforms touching virtually all the sectors of Edo’s economy which include education, health, sports, economy, civil service, power and citizens' welfare schemes. You have been able to pay N70,000 when the Federal Government is struggling with N30,000 minimum wage. “Thank you for the massive food palliative to the people of the State through the Christian Feeding Programme in partnership with CAN. It is second to none. Edo State under your watch has produced the highest ever internally generated revenue (IGR) and it’s a testimony of a good government. “Your performance speaks volumes for you and you deserve all the accolades of the best governor of the year. In governance, you have adhered to the principle of equity, justice, fairness and strengthened trust between the government and the people. “Your stand against corruption and your advocacy for good governance serves as a beacon of hope and integrity in the political landscape as all these and more gave credence for your nomination by our Church to be honoured with the prestigious and highly reserved “Kingdom Citizens' Award”. On his part, the governor thanked the leadership of the Church for the visit and the accolades for the developmental strides achieved by his administration in the last seven and half years. He noted that the recognition is well received and assured the Church that the honour will encourage his administration to do more as it’s clear that the people are watching. Obaseki noted, “In Edo State, we have been guarded by some fundamental principles shared by the church which is equity, fairness and justice as the church plays a very important role in Nigeria especially now that things are deteriorating. “People come to the Church for help instead of the government because the government has failed them and any government that needs to reach the people and is ready to be sincere, such a government should partner the church. “Thank you for the sacrifices and support you give as the church has helped the nation survive so far. Politicians don’t care as most are in government for themselves and what they can get out of government, but the church cares, raising generations of people in a certain way of thinking. “Following the level of inflation and hunger in the land, we decided to partner with the Church and contribute our own widow's mite of distributing food items to our citizens. The CAN president has shown diligence and commitment in ensuring that the programme succeeded.” PHOTO CAPTION IMG_1 Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (left), with the Baba Aladura of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide, Dr. David Bob-Manual, during a courtesy visit, in Government House, Benin City. African leaders converge on Benin, discuss pathways to functional education on the continent … make case for Obaseki’s transformative reforms … ‘African countries not making enough progress because leaders take instruction from Western countries’ African leaders, Thursday, converged on Benin City, the capital of Edo State, for the 2024 Democracy Day Dialogue, to discuss pertinent issues undermining functional education on the continent and propose solutions that will engender growth and development. The event, which was held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and Soundstage, Airport Road, Benin City, was organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, a policy think-tank set up by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. Guests at the event include Nigeria's Minister of Education, Mamman Tahir; former Vice President, Namadi Sambo; former President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi; former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, former Vice President of Zambia, Dr. Nevers-Sekwila Mumba; Deputy Governors of Bauchi and Bayelsa States, and other dignitaries from across Africa. Opening the proceedings, Governor Godwin Obaseki said Africa is at a crossroads and that the continent is blessed with a population of young people hungry for success. He noted that the theme: Functional Education and Effective Political Leadership as a Panacea to Africa’s Growth and Development is apt because it captures the essence of moving ahead and places responsibility at the feet of political leaders in the African continent. He said: “I welcome you all to this great gathering which serves as a platform where African and local leaders have gathered to have an honest conversation on democracy and the undeniable role of education in fostering growth and development in Africa.” Obaseki commended the former President for his actions in keeping Nigeria united following his rare decision to concede defeat after the 2015 general election. “The leadership ability you showed at the critical moment in our democracy saved the nation as your actions have kept us as a united nation. If not for your decision and actions, we would not have the opportunity to celebrate Democracy Day. You will forever be praised in the annals of Nigeria’s history, as your actions demonstrate the vision of your Foundation. “As African leaders, we are responsible for making the decision that will enable the youths to play their parts in developing Africa. The future is for Africa as the decision we make will not only affect the African continent but the world at large. On the State’s education reforms, he said: “People are coming to Edo State to understudy our educational reforms. Our efforts brought us to the attention of the world. We are now placed amongst countries recognized for education reforms. Former President Jonathan thanked the Edo State Government for accepting to host the Foundation as the event coincided with the State’s Education Week, adding, “I thank the keynote speakers for opening the eyes of African leaders, showing them the way to improve and develop the continent. I urge you to meet with leaders in the education sector across the country to discuss the paper.” “I urge our leaders to put in their best in improving our educational system for the benefit of African children.” Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Mamman Tahir, in his goodwill message, commended Governor Obaseki for working hard in making Edo an accelerator State for education reforms. He noted that the figure of out-of-school children in Nigeria remains a challenge, but that the Federal Government has succeeded in returning 2 million children back to school. Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, thanked the former President Jonathan for the sacrifice he made in keeping Nigeria united, as no other leader in Nigeria has beaten his record. According to him: “Free and fair election is all Nigeria needs to correct the errors facing Nigeria as a nation.” He said education remains the most fundamental ingredient needed to keep Nigeria on the path of development. The Keynote Speaker and Chairman of the University Council at Cavendish University, Uganda, Prof. Olubayi Olubayi called on African leaders to ensure that all African children are educated. He added that Africa is not making enough progress because the leaders do what other countries tell them to do, noting: “If Africa is to make any progress, what we must do is not what other countries tell us to do. “As much as you educate all African children, you must set up special schools for the most gifted and talented children. If African countries are to rise, all villages, cities, towns, and local governments must have at least one special school for gifted and talented kids.” PHOTO CAPTION L-R: Nigeria's Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman; Former Vice President, Namadi Sambo; former Vice President of Zambia, Dr. Nevers-Sekwila Mumba; former President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; former Nigeria’s President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan; former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, and former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, during the 2024 Democracy Day Dialogue, organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, in Benin City, on Thursday, June 13, 2024. https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/african-leaders-converge-on-benin-discuss-pathways-to-functional-education

Edo people should elect only a leader that can sustain Obaseki’s vision, legacy, says Jonathan ... as Edo hosts, honours Yayi, Kenyatta, Sambo, Mumba others at State Banquet Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has urged Edo people to elect only leaders that can sustain the vision and legacy of Governor Godwin Obaseki, noting that the governor’s impact on the state’s education and public service sectors is highly commendable and worthy of emulation. The former president said this during a State Banquet organized in honour of visiting African leaders and other dignitaries where individuals and organisations, who contributed to reforming the State’s public education sector were honoured and awarded. It was a night for recognition as the First Lady of Edo State, Dr. Betsy Obaseki, presented awards to visiting guests, including Nigeria's Minister of Education, Mamman Tahir; former Vice President, Namadi Sambo; former President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi; former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, former Vice President of Zambia, Dr. Nevers-Sekwila Mumba; Deputy Governors of Bauchi and Bayelsa States, and other dignitaries from across Africa. Some other award recipients include the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Rosula Foundation, and MTN Nigeria, among others. Jonathan hailed Obaseki for his drive for inclusive education policies and for recognizing groups and individuals who have invested in education in the State. He said: “I know about Obaseki and governors within the Niger Delta. I have an idea about what they are doing. I kept quiet, but you know that when somebody has a vision, people may not be too happy in some areas. It is very difficult to satisfy the human population but one key thing is that Obaseki has a vision for Edo people. “I sincerely thank him for that vision. I hope whoever will take over from him will continue with that vision. He has taken education to a level where if it continues, it will help. Look at what he has done today; he has given recognition to deserving people and organizations that play key roles in the education of our children.” According to him, “We thank the Governor for his vision for automatic employment to First Class graduates of Edo extraction. It’s only a man that means well for his people that can do this. It is similar to what I did when myself and Sambo were in Office. We came up with the Presidential Scholarship of Innovation and Development. That was a special program we designed; it had nothing to do with politics.” On his part, Governor Obaseki said the gathering was organized to appreciate stakeholders for their interest in boosting education in the state, noting, “We want to render our gratitude to each and every one of you who has contributed to where we are today in Edo State. One area that the world has come to recognise Edo in recent times is in the strides we have made in education. Globally, Edo State is recognized as an accelerator in terms of its education reforms, along with about fifteen other countries in the world. I believe that Edo is the number one or two of the sub-nationals in that ranking of nations. “We attribute the success to the support that we received from almost everybody here tonight. When we embarked on a journey to reform our educational system in Edo, we had no choice. But we also did not realize that the success will be this resounding - that the entire world will recognize what we have done or that our children will be learning at the rate they are doing today.” PHOTO CAPTION L-R: Former Vice President, Namadi Sambo; former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta; former President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi; Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and former Vice President of Zambia, Dr. Nevers-Sekwila Mumba, during a State Banquet organized in honour of visiting African leaders, in Benin City. https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/edo-people-should-elect-only-a-leader-than-can-sustain-obasekis-vision

Ex-President Jonathan commissions Edo State Secretariat Complex, hails Obaseki’s reforms, commitment to state’s devt Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has commissioned the Edo State Secretariat Complex, on Sapele Road, Benin City, commending Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to the progress and development of the State. Jonathan also laid the foundation stone for the 1500-capacity Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Auditorium, which is being constructed at the Secretariat Complex. Dignitaries at the commissioning ceremony include Governor Obaseki and the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki; the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Engr. Marvellous Godwins Omobayo and his wife; Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa; candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2024 governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo and his wife; the Deputy Governorship candidate and Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., and the Head of Service (HOS), Dr. Anthony Okungbowa. Others are former Deputy Governor of Edo State and Chief of Staff to former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Mike Ogiadhome; Speaker Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, members of EDHA; Chief of Staff to Edo State Governor, Dr. Osaigbovo Iyoha; Edo State PDP Chairman Anthony Aziegbemi, serving Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries and religious leaders in the State, amongst others. Speaking on the new complex, Jonathan noted that the buildings are some of the best in Nigeria, commending the governor for his vision to complete the dream of late Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, the then governor of Bendel State, who started the construction works. He encouraged other governors to emulate Governor Obaseki in investing in the public and civil service and recruiting first class graduates into the service through automatic employment. “I want to join the civil servants to thank you for your visionary leadership and improving their welfare and paying them N70,000 minimum wage. That is a wage that will actually take them home. “If you have a vision, certainly you will find a way to overcome all challenges before you. Edo State workers are happy for your transformative leadership which has changed their lives for the better.” On his part, Obaseki said the commissioning of the Secretariat Complex will certainly transform the landscape of Benin City, as it is not just an edifice but represents what the future of what city should look like. “It is not just an edifice, but represents how we want to run our affairs now and in the future by prioritizing what matters most which are productivity, efficiency and excellence. “The structures are a reflection of the investment we have made over the last seven and half years to rebuild our institutions. This has been a painstaking process which includes a total overhaul of how the public and civil service in Edo State operates. We have now built a workforce that will now drive change and advancement in pursuit of the core values of our democracy and good governance. He continued: “After securing my mandate to govern the people of Edo State in November 2016, this complex, particularly Palm House, was the first place I visited. I started work and built this place, which was in bad shape as the civil servants were working in an uncomfortable environment. I made a pledge to them, myself and to God that I will rebuild the infrastructure of this Secretariat. Today, we are here to see for ourselves what we have done. “The takeaways from the building of this Secretariat are that it tells us that we can achieve anything we set our minds to irrespective of the opinion of anybody. When we started the building process, many people didn't see the big picture, but today look at where we are. “This building is one of the most advanced Secretariat buildings in Nigeria. It has 24 hours daily power supply and high internet connectivity. We have done all this because we believed that government bureaucracy must work if we must make progress as a State.” The governor noted that the concept of the Secretariat complex are replicated in other locations across the State, noting that they include the health hub, built environment hub, agricultural hub and the education hub. Minimum wage: We planned for N70,000 wage three years ago – Obaseki … to set up transition c’ttee for next administration The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the State Government made plans for a N70,000 minimum wage three years ago when the telltale signs began to show that the economy was going in the wrong direction. The governor disclosed this when the Editorial Board of Tell Magazine presented him with the Award for Exceptional Courage in Leadership, in Government House, Benin City, the State’s capital. He said that the state made the plans for the increase in minimum wage when he started raising the alarm on the excessive borrowings by the Federal Government to meet its statutory obligations. According to him, “We are able to pay the N70,000 minimum wage because we planned ahead in the last three years because we knew a day like this would come. “Thank God that we have been vindicated today, as our sincerity has helped us prevail over every situation. We see prospects for a better economy and transparent government in Edo State because of the institutional reforms we have introduced to better manage the State.” He continued: “We have always prevailed because the majority of Edo people understand, appreciate and endorse what our government has done. This has been the reason for the courage with which we have tackled any problem we faced along the way.” Noting that the state was on a steady growth trajectory, he said: “For the next few months that are left for our administration, we will finish strong. We will finish all that we have started. This week, I will set up my transition team that will aggregate and document for the next administration all our achievements, projects and undertakings for our administration.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/minimum-wage-we-planned-for-n70-000-wage-three-years-ago-obaseki |
Attack on Soldiers: Edo South residents urge Govt not to back down on ban on Okaigheles …say ‘they are threats to devt in communities’ Edo residents have asked the State Government not to rescind the ban on the activities of Okaigheles in communities across Edo South Senatorial District. A cross section of the residents who spoke to journalists on Tuesday, said the decision to ban activities of the community youth leaders was long overdue, noting that it will put a check on the criminal activities that have posed serious threats to the security of lives and property across the seven local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District. Recall that in a statement, at the weekend, the state government reaffirmed its decision to ban the activities of Okaigheles and Cultists in Edo South communities. Government noted that the State Security Council data showed that two groups - Okaigheles and cultists - posed the most severe threat to the security and stability of the State, resulting in the decision of the Council to place a total ban on the criminal groups. A resident in Abudu, Orhionmwon Local Government of the State, George Osadolor said: “The government should never allow Okiagheles to return to our communities again. They have not been peaceful in the way they operate. They were set up to protect the communities but their actions have rather shown that they do not have our interest at heart.” A resident in Isihor, Ovia North East, Douglas Egberanmwen, said: “I love the state government's decision. These youth leaders go about harassing and threatening people instead of protecting community assets.” Omo Isibor, who lives in Uteh community, appealed to the Edo State Government not to rescind its decision on the ban, noting, “Please I want to appeal to the Edo State Government not to go back on its decision to ban the activities of the Okaigheles in Benin. The ban should be enforced for our collective good.” On his part, Godgift Idahosa narrated how community youth leaders threaten the peace in communities across the Benin City, stating: ‘These same people (Okaigheles) came to collect working tools from workers (tilers) last month at a construction site, claiming they are the new leaders in the community. We were made to pay N200,000 before we were allowed to continue work.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/attack-on-soldiers-edo-south-residents-urge-govt-not-to-back-down-on-ban-on |
Obaseki bags Tell Magazine’s award on exceptional courage in leadership The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has been decorated with the award for exceptional courage in leadership by the Editorial Board of Tell Magazine in recognition of his contributions to the development of the State in the last seven and half years. Presenting the award to the Governor in Government House, Benin City, the Publisher of Tell Magazine, Nosa Igiebor, commended the governor for his outstanding achievements in various sectors of the state’s economy. He said: “You don’t like talking about yourself. Neither do you like noise making but prefer to record achievements in silence. There are people who have watched you in the last seven and a half years as Governor of Edo State and they have seen in you someone who has worked very hard. You have shown that things can be done differently. “The Editorial Board of Tell Magazine doesn’t give awards but we have a policy where we identify individuals making differences in a very fundamental way, both in the public and private sectors. We believe we have the obligation to recognize them; not just only talking about them but presenting them with awards. “What is so unique about you as a Governor is that you are a different kind of politician, who understands the gravity of the responsibility of being in the office you occupy.” He continued: “You raised an alarm about the economic situation of Nigeria in 2020, saying that the country is technically broke and that those in power were trying to cover up by printing money. You warned against it; you got bashed left and right but today look at where we are? “The duty of the Governor is to serve the people and in the estimation of the Editorial Board of Tell Magazine, you have consistently done that for Edo people in the last seven and half years. You have shown that you are a different kind of leader.” On his part, Governor Obaseki thanked Tell Magazine for the recognition, noting that when a leader continues to shout and scream about their achievements, that leader has not really done much. He said it is “those that have benefited from one's leadership that should tell other people about your success.” Obaseki noted, “We focused on completing what we set out to do. This is so that by the time we focus on communicating our achievements to the people, our achievements will be visible. “As a leader, sometimes you sit down to ask if your sacrifice is worthwhile? People are watching and appreciating the efforts one is making to create a better society. “It’s very rewarding to realize that many more citizens may not have the voice but share in your vision, commitment and passion. It is very consoling. This award came at a very auspicious time for me when we are going through very interesting and perilous times, but we have been fervent. When we see people appreciate us, it makes us happy.” The governor added that the country is at a crossroads, noting, “This is a time that we need fearless leaders that will say things as they are. This is so that we can look for a way out. The solution to our national problems can’t be restricted to certain ideas as Nigeria is a large country with problems and this is the time for everybody and leaders from the entire spectrum to have a serious conversation about the future of Nigeria. “This is not the time for trade blaming, fault picking can’t be now as we all should come out and put our hands on deck to steer the ship of Nigeria out of troubled waters back to safe water. “Thank you for this acknowledgement of our modest contributions, particularly in the area of governance. This has propelled every other reform that we have undertaken. Getting our citizens to know that politics is about service to God and the people. Thank God we have been vindicated. Our sincerity has helped us prevail over every situation. Okomu clash: Obaseki visits wounded soldiers, vows to apprehend perpetrators …to pay hospital bills of attack victims The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has visited soldiers wounded during an attack by assailants in Okomu Community. The governor, who expressed his displeasure over the incident, vowed that the State Government will fish out individuals and groups behind the attack. The governor was represented during the visit at the Military Hospital in Benin City, by the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare. He was received by the Director of the Military Hospital, Brig. Gen. Pauline Olubunmi Aburime. Other government officials in the entourage include the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Kingsley Uwagbale; Commissioner for Mining & Energy, Enaholo Ojiefo, and heads of security agencies in the State. Obaseki said, “It is not right for the military personnel to be attacked in any community here in Edo State. A few weeks ago, we were aware of what happened in a community in Delta State where over twenty (20) soldiers were killed by youths. “In Edo, we have the issues of cultism and Okaigheles. The data available to us at the State Security Council meeting showed that Okaigheles are largely responsible for the threat to the security of Edo State which led to the ban on their activities.” The governor added, “Just as the State Government banned Okaigheles and their activities, some people are condemning the ban saying people should ignore it and this has encouraged those that went to Okomu forest to attack soldiers protecting our assets. “Three soldiers were badly wounded. We have one here now while others are worse. Their gunboats were destroyed. We don’t want a situation where we will be losing soldiers to reckless, dangerous cult groups. “We appeal to leaders of Edo South to discourage the youths who are armed to desist from these acts as they are not only attacking soldiers but also civilians on the streets. We are here to visit the soldiers and appeal to them that the Edo State Government will take care of the bills incurred.” Governor Obaseki warned the perpetrators to desist from such acts because the State Government will not tolerate such acts to prevent what happened in Odi Community in Bayelsa State or the incident in Delta State. He noted: “All Edo people, irrespective of party affiliation, must support the government in this fight against cultism and killings in the State as the State has lost over 150 people as a result of the acts. We thank the Nigerian Army, a responsible organisation that doesn’t take the laws into their own hands if not it would have been a different story. “We will start an operation this week to flush these people out, as we have a lot of security information and data that will help us flush them out. We advise those that belong to any cult group to return the arms they have, renounce their membership of any cult groups they belong to.” |

He noted that “the development of a nation depends on the quality of education provided for its citizens. It passes through different stages of development and is influenced by developments in science and technology. “The quest for national development and the need to meet global changes led to reforms in policy and curriculum changes to meet the development needs. These changes are affected by curriculum and schooling. (The Asian Tigers have become a force to reckon with in the world of technology, computers, electronics, handsets, and automobiles, and they can feed themselves. What makes the difference is education.)” According to him, to achieve the national goals on education various interventions should be put in place, including but not limited to the Teacher Professional Development, Universal Basic Education Act (2003), which makes basic education free, compulsory, and universal, provision of instructional facilities, Child rights acts, and curriculum review, among others He further said, “The first phase of this workshop was held in Nasarawa, Gombe, and Kano States, representing the North Central, North East, and North West, respectively, while the second phase is taking place in Ondo, Ebonyi, and Edo States, representing the South West, South East, and South-South, is taking place simultaneously. Why we enjoy a harmonious relationship with labour, Edo workers, by Obaseki The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government’s commitment to the welfare of workers in the State has led to the harmonious working relationship between the labour unions in the State and the government, ensuring improved productivity and employees’ job satisfaction. Obaseki, who spoke while addressing journalists in Benin City, said workers are the most important factor of production and their well-being is necessary in ensuring optimal productivity and service delivery. He said, “As a government, honestly, we do not understand why there should be government-labour tension. Labour is a factor of production because they provide labour, the human capacity for production and it has to be paid for. “Labour is not free, which is why as a government, we focused on issues that will enhance the productivity of the workers in government. “We understand that if the environment in which you work is not conducive enough, it cannot be productive. If the system, the processes, and the procedure that you worked with are not clear and efficient, the workers cannot be productive and above all, if they do not network into a modern age, using digital technology to enhance their work, they cannot be globally competitive. “Lastly, if you do not train them, if you do not build their capacity, you do not expect them to perform magic; they can only give you what they have.” Obaseki continued, “So, those have been the plans of our reforms in Edo. One of the key promises we made was that we are going to build and rebuild our institutions, because we will come and go, but our institutions will remain and it is these institutions that will help us transit one generation to another. “That is why it is important that we invest in the people who will manage, maintain and sustain these institutions, who are our workers. That is why we don't have that labour-government tension in Edo State, because we expect that we will build the best quality public Service on the continent. That is our goal and I believe in few weeks time, all the heads of service from the sub-region, the BRACED States, will come to Edo, being one of the first in a series of peer review and exchanges that we will be conducting.” He added, “That will make sure that we are all seeing things from the same perspective, because if the government doesn't work, if the institutions of government don’t work, then we are not going to move an inch in terms of development and prosperity.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/why-we-enjoy-a-harmonious-relationship-with-labour-edo-workers-by-obaseki |

Obaseki stated, “I don't bother when people talk about things they don't know. We have no regrets; the money they refused to use for Edo people that is the money we have turned around and used for our people. “In the last eight years, we have fought different battles and have overcome them all and will always come out victorious. No matter what they do, we will continue to use Edo money for Edo people. “We have money in Edo State but when we steal the money, there will be no money to take care of Edo people. Governance is all about using the money to develop the State and its people.” Obaseki thanked Edo people for their support and prayers, while thanking God for giving his administration the ability and grace to turn the fortunes of Edo State around and restore hope. Obaseki said this while receiving a German delegation from the Ministry of Economic Cooperation led by the Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy in Nigeria, Susan Schroeder, who were on a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City. The governor, who called for improved partnership, said his administration has put in place programmes to discourage youths from illegal migration and redirect their energies to other productive endeavors. He noted that some of the programmes and training for the youths have been successful and productive, adding that what is now needed is creating local and international markets for their services. Obaseki stated: "We are happy and excited to have the German Government and its agencies here with us here today because you are special as you collaborated with us in 2017, coming up with concrete programmes to help us combat human trafficking in the State. “Our success in this regard has been made possible with your support. We also need your support in this area of policy direction wherever we want to go next. “With the program put in place, we have been able to change the mindset of our people who are no longer interested in risking their lives to travel anymore because they have seen opportunities here. We have implemented our programmes practically as our youths can now choose a career path. “We have to build the future, train our people, and build the market both internationally and locally as we have taken advantage of the bilateral relationship with the German government. We have young men and women who can provide technology services to Germany from here in Edo State.” The governor added, “Our relationship is not narrow but all-encompassing, starting from culture, and technology services. One of the things we took away when we came to visit Germany is how your educational system works, supporting job creation. This is one of the things we are doing with our own education system in Edo State.” Earlier, the leader of the delegation said the visit is “to see what they are implementing and explore further areas of cooperation with the State Government and have had a fruitful exchange on developments in Edo State.” She commended the governor for his strides, especially in the area of digitization and economic development. Edo govt condemns attack at CVR center in Idia College, accuses APC thugs of plot to obstruct, disrupt process The attention of the Edo State Government has been drawn to deliberate attempts by the State’s Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stir violence and cause crisis in the State, in a desperate move to halt the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The State Government strongly condemns the recent attack and shooting at Idia College a couple of days ago, which led to the injury of an innocent student. To say the least, this is most troubling, disheartening, and shameful and is never a way to play the opposition role expected of a responsible opposition party. It is utterly appalling that a political party would resort to attacking a CVR center to obstruct eligible voters from registering to participate in an election that they are contesting. One is left to wonder how the APC plans to get the electorate to vote for their candidate. We say no to such shenanigans and resort to violence by the APC and their agents and call on security agencies to rein in these agents of violence. We thank God there was no loss of life from the reprehensible act and are therefore warning the APC to desist from this dishonorable conduct and rather embrace democratic norms. If the APC really has a candidate to sell and believes in the viability and credibility of their candidate, they should get more people to register and should also campaign to convince the people to vote for him instead of resorting to attacking Edo people and disrupting the peace in the State. We urge all Edo people not to be discouraged by the desperate antics of the APC and their agents but leverage the opportunity of the CVR exercise to register for their Permanent Voters Card s (PCVs) and participate in the September 21 gubernatorial election with a determination to collectively work towards a free, fair, and violence-free electoral process.
