Obaseki inspects Uwelu, 19th Street roads, others, assures projects 'll be completed before Nov The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has inspected Uwelu Road, 19th Streets, and Power line road projects in Egor Local Government Area of the State. The governor said the ongoing construction of road projects along the Ugbowo-axis is to enable his administration to decongest the City Center, build circular roads on the eastern part of the City which will take traffic away from the left flank of the City. According to him, “I am glad work is progressing at these sites. The rain was very heavy in 2023. Despite the heavy rain, we laid the groundwork for this project and we are taking advantage of the dry season to continue the work we are doing. “The idea of these roads is to begin to build circulars on the Eastern part of the City. Most of our circular roads are in the West. You have 1st, 2nd and 3rd circular roads that take traffic from the left flank of the City.” The governor noted, “If you are coming in from Lagos, you have to get to the City Center before you take your diversion to other parts of the City. So what we are trying to do is that by the time you get to Ugbowo-axis of the City, you can now make a right turn that will take you to places like Siluko, Ekenwan and even Airport roads to reduce traffic. “Our policy when designing road projects is not to focus on the road we are building but to see how we can drain the entire catchment areas. This is because if you don’t do that over time, when rain falls in those areas and water is not taken away, it will affect the roads. As you have seen in many parts of the City, drainage is very key and critical. The governor expressed satisfaction with the level of work ongoing in Uwelu Road, assuring the traders that with or without the rains, his administration will deliver the projects before the end of his administration in November 2024. “Traders at Uwelu road are quite excited about the construction of the road. I promised and assured them during the last campaign that Uwelu road is one road I am willing to complete before leaving office. The traders have come to see that when I make a pronouncement, I make sure I live up to it. It’s one of our commitments as an administration and we will complete it before leaving office.” The Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Engr. Ethan Uzamere said when completed, the road will decongest traffic in the City, noting that the length of the primary drainage is about 7.4km starting from the Ugbowo-axis through the Adolor-axis draining water away from the area. “The entire stretch of the road is about 23.7km and the roads include 15th, 18th, 19th Streets; Lucky Road; Adolor College Road; Power line and powerline extension. Other roads include: Ohonre Street, Palm Road, Sebastian Street, Golden Gilead, Omoruyi, Osaretin, Ikponwonba, Aghamioghogho, amongst others,” he added. Residents in the area, including Osaro Uwagbale and Itohan Obaseki commended the governor for the projects, appreciating the job done so far. Obaseki, security agencies review strategies, step up efforts to reduce homicide, tackle cultism The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has decried the rising incidents of homicide in the State, noting that the government and security agencies in the State are working assiduously to check violent crimes and tackle cultism in the State. Obaseki said this while briefing journalists after the maiden Security Council Meeting for 2024, held with security chiefs in the State at the EXCO Chamber, in Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital. On the sidelines of the security meeting, the governor also received the newly deployed Commander, 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig Gen Ebenezer O. Oduyebo and Commissioner of Police, Edo State, Funso Adegboye. The governor said the Council reviewed data on crime from July to December 2023, noting that homicide recorded the highest numbers of incidents which can be linked to cult-rated activities. According to him, “We have just concluded the maiden Security Council Meeting for the year and reviewed crime indices, not only for December but for the last six months of 2023. We reviewed the data from July to December and noticed that the biggest security challenge we have in Edo State today is homicide, arising largely from cult-related activities and probably community clashes. “From the month of December alone, out of the 83 incidents reported, 24 are related to homicide. For the last six months in 2023, for instance, out of 500 incidents reported, 135 had to do with homicide and we lost 135 people from mostly cult-related activities and community clashes. “This is an issue of concern to the State and the Council took a decision to delve deeper into the data to understand the specific situation and reasons driving this high level of homicide in the State.” The governor further noted that the Security Council mandated the Commissioner of Public Safety, Kingsley Uwagbale to work with security agencies to tackle cultism in the State, noting, “Cultism will be addressed from two distinct approaches which include ensuring diligent investigation and prosecution of cult related crimes and ensuring high publicity to the crime through the prosecution process. Secondly, we need to get to the root cause of this high incidence of cultism.” Obaseki added, “The Commissioner for Public Safety, working with security agencies and institutions of higher learning in Edo State will be carrying out some activities including sensitization at different public fora and perhaps a conference within the next few weeks to make sure we sensitize parents and members of the Community more on the issue of cultism. “As it relates to the possibility of increased incidence during political activities, we got assurance from various security agencies that action will be stepped up to make sure that venues are adequately protected during such activities and encourage political parties to inform security agencies when carrying out such political activities.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R (front row): Edo State Commissioner of Public Security and Safety, Kingsley Uwagbale; Commander, 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig Gen Ebenezer O. Obaseki’s reforms: Edo ranks second in fibre optics infrastructure deployment in Nigeria On the back of investment by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in strengthening digital infrastructure across the State, Edo has emerged second in the ranking of States with fibre optic infrastructure in Nigeria. Edo with 4,892.71km of fibre optic cable network ranks only behind Lagos State with 7,864.60km out of the 78,676km of cable infrastructure in Nigeria. This was contained in the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy’s white paper on ‘Deepening Nigeria’s National Backbone and Middle Mile Infrastructure,’ which was released recently. According to the report, “Thus far, 78,676km of fibre optic cables have been deployed as of 2023. Lagos leads with 7,864.60km; Edo, 4,892.71km; FCT, 4,472.03km; Ogun, 4,189.18km; Niger, 3,681.66km; Kaduna, 3,028.88km and Delta, 2,750.42km. Kano and Kogi follow with 2,697.72km and 2,602.25km in that order. “The least 10 States in fibre deployment are Yobe (1,233.31km), Borno (1,190.04km), Gombe (1182.40km) and Ekiti (1,178.04km). Others are Jigawa (1100.53km), Taraba (1,076.58km), Sokoto (1,066.56km), Plateau (997.45km), Ebonyi, 651.65km and Bayelsa (407.88km).” The whitepaper noted that individuals and communities face a growing barrier to navigating the interconnected landscape of modern life without reliable and affordable Internet access. The Governor Obaseki-led administration prioritized investment in digital infrastructure as one of the key pillars to drive economic growth. This is aimed at powering the State’s E-Gov platform and sustaining the bourgeoning tech ecosystem anchored on tech initiatives such as the Edo Tech Park and the Edo Innovates Hub as well as the providing public internet with the deployment of free WiFi in public spaces to encourage youths to participate in the gig economy. https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/obasekis-reforms-edo-ranks-second-in-fibre-optics-infrastructure-deployment |
Edo, market women, community leaders, others reach agreement on clean Edo initiative The Edo State Government and relevant stakeholders, including market women, religious leaders, and community leaders, have signed a 10-point resolution to keep the State clean and green. The stakeholders reached the agreement during an engagement on environmental sanitation and pollution control tagged: ‘Edo must be clean and serene’, held at the New Festival Hall in Government House, Benin City, the State capital. The Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Joshua Omokhodion, urged for collaboration among stakeholders, which was the best way to solve the challenges of waste disposal in Edo State. He said a mobile court has been set up on environmental issues where defaulters will be prosecuted so as to serve as a deterrent to those who flout environmental laws. “The governor in his wisdom said his aspiration is for Edo State to be the best place to work, do business and live before 2050. To achieve this, the environment must play a pivotal role by being clean." A representative of the Arewa Community, Kabiru Abbas expressed appreciation to the State Government for the initiative but stressed that waste managers often fail to evacuate refuse from the streets. The high point of the engagement was the signing of the 10-point resolution on how to keep the environment and State clean by leaders of various groups present. The points include: “No indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road median, walkway; all market to be kept clean or shut down; no burning of refuse as offenders will be apprehended and prosecuted/fined; no littering or throwing out litters from vehicles; mobile Court set up to prosecute offenders; no noise pollution, amongst others.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R: General Manager, Edo State Waste Management Board, Mr. Charles Imarhiagbe; Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Edo Government House Chapel undergoing renovation – SSA, Religious Affairs ... Temporary place of worship provided at Festival Hall, Government House Our attention has been brought to a baseless and unsubstantiated video and an accompanying report making the rounds on social media to the effect that His Excellency, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has purportedly shut down the Edo State Government House Chapel located within the precinct of the Government House. It is quite unfortunate that the architects of the fake narrative intend to embarrass the Edo State Government and cause religious discord among peace-loving Edo people with the manner they have tried to twist the narrative. It is therefore necessary to state unequivocally that the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, regards persons of all religions, faiths and spiritual persuasions with utmost respect. The Governor has over the years maintained a healthy relationship with the religious leaders in the State, engaging constructively with them to ensure peace and harmonious living among the people. It is therefore a grave mischief for anyone or a group of people to fabricate rumours that the Governor has shut down the Chapel in the Government House and evicted a priest from the Chapel, in an attempt to curry political sympathy. It is also instructive to note that the Chapel is a facility for interdenominational worship, providing a space for members of different religious persuasions to congregate and attend to their spiritual needs. The Catholics conduct a weekly Mass every Tuesday at the Chapel; the Anglican Communion use the Chapel every Thursday while Pentecostals congregate every Wednesday. The Government House Intercessors use the chapel regularly while the Government House Praise Team uses the venue for a monthly Holy Ghost praise programme. Hence, the Chapel is not the preserve of just one Christian creed. In view of the plethora of activities that the facility was being used for, wear and tear is sure to set in thereby necessitating renovations to give the Chapel a facelift befitting its status as a Government House Chapel. The request for renovation was made and the Governor graciously approved this. While the renovation work was about to begin, an unauthorized personnel proceeded to move some of the equipment and materials in the Chapel to an undisclosed location without authorization. Obviously acting with a premeditated motive, he recorded himself in the act and shared it on social media with a misleading narrative. Relevant security operatives have since been briefed on the matter and an investigation has begun to address the issue and ensure those found culpable are duly sanctioned. The Government House Festival Hall has since been provided as the temporary accommodation for the chapel and its activities, while the renovation works last. Therefore, our respected religious leaders, the Christian community and indeed members of the public are implored to disregard the video in circulation and its content. It is the handiwork of mischief makers who are bent on scoring cheap political points by instigating one religion against another. The Edo State Government under the sterling leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki will never engage in actions that will undermine religious harmony in the State. How we created opportunities to boost access to credit, economic expansion in Edo – Obaseki The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the expeditious processing of Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) and land titles in the State are some of the reforms that have enabled business owners to leverage their landed assets as collaterals to access credit. The governor, who made the submission in a chat with journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, noted that efforts have been intensified to attract investment into the State. According to him, “We opened up more job centers to train and assist young people to obtain jobs while we sustained the enabling environment for private businesses to grow. By issuing C-of-Os and land titles expeditiously, many more citizens were able to have collaterals with which to obtain credit.” He added: “The state health insurance scheme reached almost 200,000 enrollees, thus further strengthening our healthcare system. As a result of the financing and quality control provided by the Health Insurance Scheme, we continue to improve the quality of our primary healthcare footprints and work is also progressing on our secondary healthcare facilities in Benin City and Auchi while work will commence in Uromi in the year 2024” The Obaseki-led government has continued to push reforms that have opened the State’s economy to new investment in the real estate, manufacturing, food processing, energy, lifestyle and hospitality, e-commerce, and sports sectors. https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/how-we-created-opportunities-to-boost-access-to-credit-economic-expansion-in |

Frank Evboumwan’s bitterness against Obaseki By Crusoe Osagie Only people who are not conversant with Frank Evbuomwan’s history with His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki will miss the fact that his piece, riddled with falsehood, was birthed from a place of personal loss, bitterness and envy rather than patriotism or pursuit of an egalitarian society. That Obaseki refused to return Frank Evbuomwan for a second term of 5years as Managing Director of the Edo Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS) has left him extremely bitter, because Evbuomwan felt a bit entitled to that position, being the pioneer chief executive of the agency. Also, Evbuomwan erroneously considers Obaseki his mate having served in the State Executive Council of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole where Obaseki also served as Chairman of the Economic Team. Frank, however, fails to take into cognisance the fact that Obaseki served pro bono, while Evboumwan on the other hand, was being paid by the government. Evboumwan also does not consider the fact that before coming to his home state to serve his people, Obaseki already conquered corporate Nigeria, founding arguable the biggest investment bank in Nigeria today. So, my brother Evboumwan, Obaseki is not exactly your contemporary. He is your senior brother! Away from Evboumwan’s motive for writing his bile-ridden piece, it is important to provide some clarifications on the comments made on a number of projects and the progress of work done till date. Benin Port Project - The Benin Port Project, a 300,000 TEUs per annum facility, is well on track. - The call for expression of request was advertised in February, 2023. By July, 2023, after a thorough bidding process, Motal Engil, a renowned global infrastructure development firm, emerged as the preferred bidder for the project. - Motal Engil is currently sourcing financing in the international market to commence construction. It had important critical heavy duty equipment mid last year to facilitate execution of high impact projects in the country. The project is expected to be delivered through a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Maintain and Transfer (DBFOMT) model. - It is being developed through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) involving the Ministry of Transport, Nigeria Port Authority, Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), and the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), among others. Benin Enterprise Park - The Benin Enterprise Park is also very well on course. Hon. Ikponmwosa Osayande, a finance expert and account, is the Managing Director of the Park. - The Park covers an area of 1000 hectares and the design of the main infrastructure network, sewage system, among others, are all complete. - The anchor tenant at the facility is the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), which has procured 50 hectares for development. - The Park, a 1000-hectare facility, is connected to the 95MW Ossiomo Power Plant, assuring adequate electricity for its clients. - Work is expected to commence soon on the NCDMB portion of the park, which will open the facility up for more big-ticket investors. Edo North Cargo Airport - A Cargo Airport has been proposed to be built in Edo North Senatorial District, to facilitate movement of goods and passengers from the axis of the State. - The agency regulating air transport, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has conducted a study on the proposed site in Uzairue, and certified it as appropriate. Farm development - Under the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP), the Edo State Government has launched the largest oil palm development project in Africa with over 70,000 hectares of land allocated to at least 10 private investors. - Over $500m has been invested in the programme and a number of the integrated farms are aimed at developing integrated farms and an ethanol plant that would meet 5% of Nigeria’s ethanol needs. Road infrastructure - The State has constructed over 565 roads, covering a total distance of 737.37 kilometers. - Some of these roads, including Benin-Abraka Road, Ekehuan Road, Ugbiyokho Road and Junction Improvements, are undergoing reconstruction - The Junction Improvement work is almost complete on Third Junction, at the Sakponba axis and the Sapele Road axis. EdoBEST - The State has trained over 15000 teachers on use of computer tablets to deliver lessons to over 300,000 pupils across the State. - The government has rolled out recruitment of 5200 new teachers to address shortfalls across the State. The EdoBEST programme has been vetted and praised by the World Bank, leading to even more funding to increase the impact of the project. Health Sector - The Edo State Health Improvement Programme (EdoHIP) has overseen the revamp of over 30 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHC) across the State. This includes the provision of solar-powered electricity, potable water and telemedicine facility. - The Edo Health Insurance Scheme (EdoHIS) have proven to be quite impactful with increased enrolment. At the moment, it has over 200,000 subscribers. College of Agriculture - The Edo State College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi, has been completed, with staff already engaged. Admission is ongoing and a new session will commence soon. - It is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to train staff for the growing number of investments in the oil palm sector and other parts of the agricultural sector. It is not surprising that Evboumwan may harbour some bad blood against the governor, but that is not sufficient to embark on a campaign to smear impactful projects that were undertaken by Governor Obaseki. 2024 Armed Forces Day: Nigeria's fundamental defects need to be addressed else we are forced into a reset ... hails bravery, sacrifice of fallen heroes, reechoes call for nation’s restructuring The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has urged for urgent moves to address Nigeria's fundamental defects so that the country is not forced into a reset. The governor also hailed the sacrifice and bravery of Nigerian fallen heroes, saluting their contributions to the peace and unity of the country. Obaseki who spoke during the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, in Benin City, the Edo State capital, reiterated the need to urgently redesign and restructure the country to address its defects and place the country on the path of growth and prosperity. He said, “We thank God for another year and opportunity to remember those people who have sacrificed their lives for the peace and unity of Nigeria. “The people we are honoring today have paid the supreme price with their lives and it's important not to forget their efforts. That is why this event is important and we should be sober about it.” On the need to restructure the country, the governor said, “We all know that things are not going well in the Country today and most Nigerians are concerned and worried because the economic situation has created a State of hopelessness for the citizens. “This is an opportunity to reflect on the situation and crisis that resulted in the loss of those we are remembering today. It's the right time as Nigerians to sit back and think very deeply about what is going on in the Country today so that we do not repeat some of the mistakes in the past that have led us to where we are today. “It’s an opportunity for political leaders to reflect deeply, particularly given what is happening around us in West Africa. It’s time to stop pretending and deceiving ourselves and know that we must restructure Nigeria. Political leaders of Nigeria understand that it's time to redesign this Country and failure to do so may lead to crisis; my prayer is that it doesn't happen.” Obaseki added, “We can’t continue this way as it’s time to release the energy of the young people in this nation, put more resources on the table and fund security services better so that we don’t lead ourselves into another crisis. “As we remember the fallen heroes of the nation, we must ensure we put enough pressure on the political system to be more sensitive to what is going on in the Country and note that the most important assignment of the Government of Nigeria today is to redesign and restructure Nigeria as the fundamental defects need to be addressed in order for it not to be forced on us.” The governor also inspected the warehouse for artefacts at the premises of the National Museum at Kings Square in Benin City, venue for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, which is still under construction. Obaseki: How we revolutionized Edo’s health system in seven years, ranked State among top five in Nigeria …reels out plan for State’s healthcare system in 2024 The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government in the last seven years, revolutionized the State’s healthcare system, placing the State among top five in terms of healthcare provision, life expectancy, and other key indicators in Nigeria’s healthcare space. The governor, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, noted that the reform of the healthcare sector in the State is taking firm footing, as the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme now has over 200,000 subscribers. Noting that the government is decentralizing the State’s healthcare system, Obaseki said his administration is strengthening the primary healthcare system which is to be supported by secondary, tertiary and specialist hospitals to provide comprehensive healthcare across the three senatorial districts of the State. The governor said, “We have almost 50 primary healthcare centres that have been revamped and upgraded to world-class standards but it is not just about the centres. What we have done in the healthcare system that is revolutionary is healthcare financing. Why do people not go to clinics or hospitals? It is because they are afraid of the payment. “But we have eliminated that and have come up with the Edo health insurance Scheme which is now compulsory. This means once you have registered, you can walk into any registered centres, either public or private to get healthcare. That is revolutionary.” According to him, “Today, Edo ranks among the top five States in terms of healthcare provision, life expectancy, and other key indicators in the country’s healthcare space.” On plans for Edo’s healthcare system in 2024, Obaseki noted, “We have set aside about 10% of the budget to address the needs in the health sector. This includes funds for the completion of the In-Patient Department as well as the Accident and Emergency Wards of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital. This will also cover more work across the Primary Healthcare Centres across the State. “We are also making statutory payments for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and our own Edo State Health Insurance Scheme, which provides necessary impetus to attract more private sector providers into the State and also cut out-of-pocket spending for health services.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/obaseki-how-we-revolutionized-edos-health-system-in-seven-years-ranked-stat
