Obaseki mourns passing of Iyase of Asaba, former SSG of old Bendel State, Chief Onyeobi

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has mourned the passing of Iyase of Asaba and former Secretary to Government and Head of the Civil Service of the defunct Bendel State, Chief Patrick Isioma Goodluck Onyeobi.

Obaseki, in a statement, described the late Chief Onyeobi as a consummate administrator and distinguished community leader, who deployed his intellect and resources for the service of humanity, his community, and country.

Obaseki commiserated with the Onyeobi family, as well as the people of Asaba, praying that God will grant all the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

According to him, “I received the news of the passing of Iyase of Asaba, Chief Patrick Isioma Goodluck Onyeobi, with a heavy heart.

“A fine gentleman, Chief Onyeobi was a consummate administrator and outstanding community leader who achieved remarkable success in the various endeavours he pursued.

“He was a beacon of excellence and espoused virtues of diligence and hard work. From his early days as a clerical officer at Western Region Civil Service, rising to a Permanent Secretary at Bendel State Civil Service between 1974 and1983, and later as Head of Service and former Secretary to Government of the defunct Bendel State, his intellect and hard work stood him out, endearing him to all who came in contact with him.

“His demise is even more painful, particularly at this time when we still mourn and are yet to complete the burial rites for the Asagba of Asaba. He will be remembered for his knack for excellence, his undying quest for truth and justice, and an abiding commitment to the development of his community and our dear nation. He will be sorely missed.

On behalf of the Government and people of Edo State, I commiserate with the people of Asaba, the Onyeobi family, friends, and associates and pray that God will grant all the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Obaseki rallies stakeholders in Uhunmwode, Orhionmwon on Regional Devt, Benin City Masterplan, seeks input

…says Edo key to Nigeria’s survival

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, met with residents and other stakeholders in Orhionmwon and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the State to seek their support and input in the State’s Regional Development and Benin City Master Plan.

Obaseki at the stakeholders’ interactive session held at Edo State College of Education, Abudu in Orhionmwon LGA, said the plans will serve as a roadmap for the progress and sustainable development of the State within the next 30 years.

The governor said, “In the last seven and half years, we have done a lot as a government as we will not leave the State the way we met it. We don't have a master plan in Edo and Nigeria and it has led to retrogression, not development. We will put down a plan for the next 30 years which will lead successive administrations to develop the Edo.

"We have brought seven investors to Uhunmwode and Orhinomwon LGAs that will start mechanized and large-scale agriculture. We are working towards feeding the South-South. Edo has fertile land in Nigeria.”

"Every local government must have at least one technical school and must be linked to a particular trade and the students will have a place to work. Abudu Campus is one of the campuses to train teachers that will teach our students,” Obaseki added.

On his part, the Commissioner for Food Security and Agriculture, Hon. Stephen Idehenre said in the master plan, technology will be introduced to agriculture to encourage young people into the sector.

He noted that the State has brought in investors that have invested in the oil Palm industry which is a sector that has the potential for massive employment opportunities for Edo youths.

Also, the MD of Edo State Transport Agency, Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor, said the State as part of the masterplan will develop all forms of transportation in Edo State.

She noted that Benin City has an Airport as another is being proposed in Auchi, adding, “The Edo State Governor has approved for the purchase of water buses for the agency to commence water transportation and it would serve as a pilot scheme. The water buses would look like ECTS buses, as Jetty will be built around riverine areas.”

She added, “We are also working to connect rails into Benin City, Abudu and other areas to ensure people don't depend on road or air transportation alone. The governor has built a bus terminal in Benin City as a pilot phase and it has recorded success and now it will be extended to other parts of the State. The government has also embarked on junction improvements to solve traffic problems in the State.”

In his response, HRH Edobor Uwaifo, Enogie of Omolua-Igbanke thanked the governor for his foresight of a master plan for the State as it will guide the State in its developmental plans.

He, however, appealed to the governor to upgrade the Igbanke General Hospital to enable more people in the area to better benefit from the government’s huge investment in the health sector.

Obaseki insists on ban on open grazing, urges stakeholders’ support to ensure a secure, prosperous Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the ban on open grazing in the State still remains, warning that anyone found wanting will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

The governor said this while addressing stakeholders during an interactive session on the Edo State Regional Development and Benin City Master Plan, held at Iguobazuwa, Ovia South-West Local Government Area of the State.

Obaseki who reassured the government’s commitment to the safety and security of residents, called for the collaboration and support of all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, secure and prosperous Edo State.

He said, “Any herdsman in our bush without permission is working against the law of our State, and anything that happens, they can't blame anyone.

“Let us be sure that nobody gives that person the permission to enter our forest and if permission will be granted, let us know the type of permission given to them to come into our bushes or forest to graze with their cattle.

“Open grazing is banned in Edo State. If they are in your forest, let us know where they are because we have police and vigilantes who will help us get them out through a number we will give you to call.”

Obaseki added, “Anybody that wants to do ranching business should contact you, the community people and you will decide on the land to use and method of feeding their cattle. They should do the business with you and not invade our forest indiscriminately as if there are no owners. The forest and bushes belong us.”

…kicks off construction of water stops in various communities

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government has commenced the construction of water stops in various riverine communities across the State with the plan to launch the State’s water transportation system next month.

Obaseki disclosed this while addressing stakeholders during an interactive engagement on the Edo State Regional Development and Benin City Master Plans, at Ovia-South-West Secretariat in Iguobazuwa.

The governor, who noted that the transportation system was a critical aspect of the State’s master plans, said the water transportation system will kick off with three passenger boats in the Riverine Community.

Present at the meeting are the Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq, serving Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries, market women, youths, religious and traditional leaders, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Hausa Community, amongst others.

We are starting with three passenger boats in the riverine communities. We are building water stops in various communities around the riverine communities in the State.”

On the State’s Regional Development and Benin City Master Plans, Obaseki said, “The plan I met expired, hence the need for another plan. A master plan is not forever; it's for sometimes. I want to leave a plan for the State that will guide other successive administrations to continue the development plan.

“Today, we have developed our master plan that will guide every area of life. We are here to hear from you and have your input on the plan. Before I leave office, we will take it to the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) to ensure it’s signed into law.”

Earlier in his welcome, Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Ethan Uzamere said, “Planning is very important as it is vital for development and Governor Obaseki with this plan has left a long-term plan that other administrations follow. Planning is important for real development.”

Edo deploying novel model to boost response to medical emergency - Commissioner

… we’ve responded to 27 emergency calls in one month

The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli, said the State Government is leveraging strategic collaboration with the private sector to boost response to medical emergencies in the State.

The commissioner, in a chat with journalists, said residents in the Oredo, Egor, and Ikpoba-Okha LGAs can access medical and ambulance services by calling the Edo Emergency Toll-Free Number, 112 or 739, noting that, “This is a pilot phase for residents within Benin City.

“After this pilot phase which will last for about a year, the State Government will extend the medical emergency services to other parts of the State. After we have looked into the things we didn’t do well in the pilot phase, we can now extend it.”

“We cannot start something new and you want to cover a large area. This is why we are starting small. Then as we make progress, we will review what we have been able to do in one year. We can now close the gap and extend it to all over the State. So part of the programme is to extend it to all over the state but gradually.”

Dr. Alli said the State is executing the Medical Emergency Response Programme with the partnership of “Emergency Response Africa which is well noted for executing such a project and actually they are also bringing some level of expertise and funding to ensure this project is established and effectively executed in the State.

“It is a partnership that the State Government is benefitting both in terms of technical expertise and in terms of funding. It is a win-win for the citizens of the State.”

According to the commissioner, the “initiative is encouraging because it covers all the areas. There are ambulance services and first responders- those who are the first persons to attend to the accident victims. We are training people on that. How do you even respond in terms of emergency? These are things everyone should know actually.”

According to the Project Manager, Edo Medical Service (EMS), Kate Ibeanusi, “In one month, from 18th March to 16th April 2024 we have responded to 27 emergency calls. Out of this, the number of calls dispatched to the ambulance is 21 and 6 hospital transfers. Within this period, we had one hoax call. We encouraged residents within Benin City to take advantage of this initiative by reporting medical emergencies to save lives.”

EducationEdo Impresses World Bank With Impact Of Edobest Reforms, As Situation Room Track by Aisosa25(op): 12:35pm On Apr 22, 2024
Edo impresses World Bank with impact of EdoBEST reforms, as situation room tracks performance

The World Bank has commended the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for his government’s reforms in the basic education sector, expressing satisfaction with the progress and impact of the reforms in the last six years.

A World Bank delegation led by the Bank’s Education Economist, Martín De Simone, said the State has continued to meet set goals, significantly progressing with its basic education sector reforms and upskilling the State’s teeming youth population through the Edo Basic Education Sector and Skills Transformation (EdoBESST) Program.

The delegation which is on a 4-day working visit to the state is collaborating with stakeholders from the Edo State Ministry of Education, the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB), and other government agencies implementing far-reaching reforms geared at repositioning Edo State in basic education and skills development.

According to Martín De Simone, “we are evaluating and reviewing the progress achieved so far in the implementation of the state-wide basic education and skills transformation reform which was launched in 2018 by the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.”

He said, “We have held extensive meetings with key stakeholders over the past four days and have identified key areas where progress has been made and areas that need to be further strengthened as we work toward achieving the goals of EdoBESST.

“We are particularly pleased that the data before us shows that there is improvement in the basic education system since the implementation of reform in various areas, including the performance of the pupils in state-owned primary schools.”

After the team visited The Situation Room situated at Block B, State Secretariat at Sapele Road in Benin City, Martín commended the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration for creating the facility where activities of the program are monitored.

De Simeone said, “The Situation Room created to monitor teachers, students, and schools’ performance is unique because it helps in real time data gathering, compared to what the bank has seen in other states.”

“The Situation Room from where activities of teachers, schools and pupils are being monitored will help in improving the overall performance of each school as teachers are cautious because they know their activities are monitored and it will equally improve the performance of the pupils.”

Also, a Senior Education Specialist with the World Bank, Dr. Olatunde Adekola while commending the governor stated that, "We encourage the governor to urge UBEC to come learn from Edo SUBEB as this is the way to go as it will help Nigeria’s education system as the education system has improved in Edo State.”

The Executive Chairman of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB), Ozavize Salami reeled the impact of the program which was launched six years ago.

She said, “This is the sixth World Bank mission in the course of the EdoBESST program. The program has been on for six years and the partnership with the World Bank is for four years now and we have seen the results of what we set out to achieve.

“We established The Situation Room in Edo SUBEB to gather real time data for the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) program. Now we can track the performance of our teachers, head teachers and pupils directly from our office in Benin City. It provides us with a reliable means of gathering information to guide us in making better policies.

“It also helps us to set realistic goals and monitor our progress in real time. We have redefined school level quality control in Nigeria through The Situation Room. Right now, I can monitor the performance of our teachers, students and schools right from this office.

According to the Edo SUBEB Chairman, “currently, EdoBEST is catering to the learning needs of over 380,000 pupils across the 18 local government areas of Edo State. The program has improved teaching and learning quality by upskilling teachers and equipping them with well-researched materials for teaching. It has provided technology for efficient school and classroom level management.”

… says new deal with Italian govt ‘ll drive growth, bolster socio-economic devt in Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has sealed a new partnership with the Italian Government to strengthen sociocultural and economic relationships between both countries, advancing opportunities in agriculture, technology, tourism, and culture and facilitating cooperation in technical and vocational training, among others.

The deal was signed with the Veneto region of Italy on the sidelines of the 60th International Art Exhibition organized by La Biennale di Venezia where the governor served as the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion.

The Governor while signing the deal reeled impact of his government’s impact on various sectors of the economy, noting that the State Government is committed to exploring collaborations in culture, agriculture, technology, technical and vocational education with the Italian Government to empower youths in the State with the right skills to compete favourably globally.

The partnership is aimed at facilitating cooperation in technical and vocational training, advancing opportunities in the agricultural sector, enhancing Information Technology capacity, promoting tourism, increasing economic opportunities in the textile industry, and promoting social and cultural relationships between both countries.

According to Obaseki, “I have served as Governor of Edo State for over seven and a half years, and during this period, we have expanded the scope of our collaboration with the Italian government, spanning joint efforts in migration management, cultural collaboration, international exchanges, among others.

“Today, we are here to strengthen the bond of collaboration between the people of Edo State and the Veneto region. These would span across Culture, Agriculture, Technology, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

“These are key areas of focus of my government and we have made tremendous strides in strengthening institutions that advance these causes in Edo State over the last seven years.”

Stating his government’s achievements in the past seven and half years, Obaseki said, “In particular, our government embarked on wide-ranging reforms in the civil and public service that have dramatically improved service delivery ensuring that government institutions are not only responsive but that services are seamless with the use of digital technology. Edo today is the first State in Nigeria to go fully digital – all government business is conducted electronically.

“Aside these, we have advanced reforms in the Arts with the ongoing development of the Benin Cultural District and the construction of the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) in Benin City, which provides a space for interrogation of our State’s rich cultural heritage and allows our youth to reignite the spirit of creativity.

“In agriculture, we have the biggest oil palm development project in Africa with about 70,000 hectares of land under cultivation. Investment in food processing has also been on the rise in the State as we have two active ethanol plants on the verge of completion. All these are made possible by the efforts to boost investment inflow into the State, which has resulted in the State emerging as one of the fastest growing economies in Nigeria.”

On vocational education, Obaseki said the State has invested in expanding our vocational education institutions in the State to train best-grade technicians with support from international organisations, adding that a model institute is operational in Benin City and more are spread across the State, providing quality practical training to our youths.

“Through this effort, we are ensuring that our people are well skilled so that when they migrate, they are more useful in whatever society they find themselves in,” he noted.

Obaseki added that one of the most ambitious projects is the investment in technology infrastructure, which is intended to serve as the superstructure for our digital economy, adding “So far, we have completed the installation of fibre optic internet cables across the 18 local government areas of the State. These ensure that every part of the State is able to operate on high-speed internet.

The governor noted, “It is quite instructive that we have a considerable number of our people over here in Italy who have continued to promote the ethos of hard work, diligence and excellence.

“The rich history and art scene of Veneto mirrors the vast promise that Edo possesses. We are therefore building bridges to share success stories and collaborate on building a mutually beneficial relationship for the benefit of our people.

“We have come on a very interesting journey these past years and are happy to have had the people and government of Italy as worthy partners.”

He added, “We appreciate all that you have done and assure you that with the strengthened relationship forged today, we will achieve more in the quest of building a more impactful relationship for shared prosperity.”

He said, “I want to thank the Association for the multiplier effect of the Conference holding in Benin City on the economic output in the State. It will affect the State and its people positively, especially in the hospitality business which will receive high patronage while the Conference lasts.

“I have listened to you carefully and for me, this is not a courtesy visit but a thank you visit as all you have come here to do is to thank the governor for what he has done for your Association. In no paragraph in your speech were you are asking the government for something. This means that the Obaseki-led administration has done 100 percent.

“When you work with a man with a vision who has the development plan with him, he will surely welcome those that will help him achieve his vision and plan for the State. The master plan is very important to the State and it's very important to revive it and improve on it so as to put the state on the path of development. This prompted the governor to come up with the 30-year Benin and Regional Master Plans.”

Commending the Council chairman as the first Edo person to have attained the feat, Obaseki said, “The NIESV is a noble Institution with a high reputation because of what it stands for in the society. We are happy that after 53 years of its existence, you are the only Edo man to become the president of the Council and I thank you for bringing the Conference to Benin City, Edo State. We know that your tenure will open more chances for Edo people to lead this body.”

The governor further called for improved collaboration between the Edo State Government and NIESV, describing it as a symbiotic relationship that will continue to improve the built environment.

On his part, the National President of NIESV, Johnbull Amayaevbo said, “We are here in Benin City for the 54th Annual Conference as the Conference begins tomorrow 18th of April 2024 as the governor plays a crucial role as the Special guest of honour. We have international speakers from America, Europe, and Asia. The theme of the conference is, ‘Nigeria's Trillion Dollars GDP Dream: Harnessing the Wealth of our Land.’

“For this Conference, all the hotels in Benin City are fully booked and flights into the City are now difficult to book-this is what we have brought into the State. Our presence in the city has boosted economic activities in the City and State in general.”

Commending Obaseki’s impact on various sectors of Edo’s economy, the NIESV President noted, “I am currently doing my senior executive course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategy. Most of the facilitators are using the Edo model, x-raying the successes recorded in various sectors of Edo State by the Governor. I am proud because of the work of Obaseki.”

Let me also appreciate the Curator – Aindrea Emelife, and the organizer of the programme – the Museum of West African Art, for making the Nigeria Pavilion at the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale such a success.”

On the theme of the exhibition, the governor said: “The ‘Nigeria Imaginary’ is particularly appropriate in view of the challenges we are currently going through as a country. We face what can only be described as an incredibly difficult time in Nigeria with an economic crisis that has caused most Nigerians to see their earnings and savings decimated by devaluation and inflation.

“It is during trying times like this that hope for a better future and a belief in the ability to make a difference become essential. This exhibition - Nigeria Imaginary, looks back to great moments of Nigerian history, imagining where we could have been as a nation, but also invokes hope for a brighter future. The great artistic traditions and rich cultures of Nigeria and West Africa have had and continue to have a profound impact on global arts, music, fashion, and culture.”

Obaseki added, “As some of you may know, this is my last year as Governor of Edo State, and at this stage, one begins to think about legacy, and review what one has managed to achieve in the last 8 years. I can say unequivocally that the thing that I am the most proud of is igniting the spark that has become the fire called MOWAA, the Museum of West African Art and the 13 acres Cultural District which is now under construction in the historic part of Benin City in Edo State. It is my aspiration that it will serve as the venue for the homecoming of this Nigeria Imaginary exhibition when it comes to Nigeria.”

On requests for the Nigeria Imaginary exhibition to tour internationally, he said, “I am aware and excited that there are already requests for this Nigeria Imaginary exhibition to tour internationally before it comes back to Nigeria. This is clearly an indication and testimony of the quality of what we have been created by these amazing artists. But when the exhibition eventually comes back to Nigeria, I look forward to seeing the Nigeria Imaginary in its real domicile, and to see all of you at its opening ceremony.”

HealthEdo To Save Irrua Specialist Hospital N37m Monthly Cost With Solar-powered Proje by Aisosa25(op): 7:05pm On Apr 16, 2024
Edo to save Irrua Specialist Hospital N37m monthly cost with solar-powered project

The Edo State Government is set to commence a solar power project at the Irrua Specialist Hospital (ISH), to supply 24 hours of electricity to the Federal Government-owned specialist health facility.

The project on completion will save the hospital over N37m spent monthly for the procurement of diesel.

The Commissioner for Mining and Energy, Engr. Enaholo Ojiefo, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, said the project is part of efforts by the state government to support major health facilities in the State to reduce their running costs and consequently cut healthcare costs.

The announcement followed the groundbreaking ceremony of a solar power project at the Nigerian Army Military Hospital in Benin City.

The project is expected to begin with the major health facilities in the State and expanded across the State’s 18 local government councils.

According to Ojiefo, while speaking at the groundbreaking for the solar power project at the Nigerian Army Military Hospital in Benin City, said, “We see our people coming here, especially the pregnant women, who come for healthcare services. The governor instructed us to ensure we support them with constant electricity.

“We are looking at a month plus for the project to be completed and ready. We have one of such project working in Eyaen already. There is a 1MW facility at Aduwawa and this will be another 1MW.”

He added, “The next project is Irrua Specialist Hospital which uses over N37 million on diesel. The governor has charged us to go after the major health establishments in the State to reduce healthcare costs.”

Earlier, Governor Godwin Obaseki who was represented by his deputy, Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, said the government remains committed to proffering a lasting solution to the power problem in the State.

The cost of energy, when reduced, will go a long way to help reduce the running cost in the facility. It will save the cost of diesel and will reduce the burden.

“It’s a laudable project and as an administration, we need to sit down with the 18 local government chairmen across the State to see how to positively design such projects so it can be extended across the State.”

He added, “We have a very good plan for the State and have gone more than 70 percent in its execution. I am sure we will finish well as a government.”

Obaseki inaugurates solar power project at Benin Military Hospital, to extend facility to 18 LGAs

...project to be commissioned within next 60 days

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Monday, performed the groundbreaking ceremony of a solar power project to supply 24 hours of electricity at the Nigerian Army Military Hospital in Benin City.

Obaseki, who spoke to journalists after the official inauguration of the project, said the facility will be delivered and commissioned within the next 60 days.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Omobayo Marvellous Godwins said the government remains committed to proffering a lasting solution to the power problem in the State.

He said, “I had cause to felicitate with my people in Edo North for the Sallah celebration as this is my first official assignment as Deputy Governor of the State. I am grateful to God Almighty for this. This is historic as God has perfected the plan that it will be in a healthcare facility and it means so much to me.

“The Commander while speaking was looking at the running cost of the project. The cost of energy, when reduced, will go a long way to help reduce the running cost in the facility. It will save the cost of diesel and will reduce the burden.

“We have a mortuary, equipment and human resources here at the Military Hospital Benin, and energy (electricity) is required to run 24/7 services. There should not be downtime at all. This project here in this hospital is timely and needs to be approached with all sense of seriousness. I have no doubt at all in my mind that in the next 60 days, we should be close to commissioning this project.”

On extending the project across all councils in the State, the governor noted: “It’s a laudable project and as an administration, we need to sit down with the 18 local government chairmen across the State to see how to positively design such projects so it can be extended across the State.”

He added, “We have a very good plan for the State and have gone more than 70 percent in its execution. I am sure we will finish well as a government.”

On his part, Commissioner for Mining and Energy, Engr. Enaholo Ojiefo noted that the project is a collaborative effort between the Edo State Government and the Military, adding, “The Commander approached us to appeal to the State Government to work and collaborate with them. We see our people coming here, especially the pregnant women, who come for healthcare services. The governor instructed us to ensure we support them with constant electricity.”

The Commissioner continued: “By tomorrow, the team will be here, followed by the panel installation. We are looking at a month plus for the project to be completed and ready. We have one of such project working in Eyaen already. There is a 1MW facility at Aduwawa and this will be another 1MW.”

Earlier, the Director of Military Hospital Benin, Brig. Gen. Pauline Olubunmi Aburime, who identified poor power supply as one of the greatest challenges facing the hospital, said: "We explored all forms to ensure we have constant power supply. We wrote to the Military authority, met with Discos, and interacted with the Edo State Government to see how to prioritize power.

“The state government agreed to kick start a solar project to support us and improve our electricity supply to the hospital which will surely improve our services. I thank the Edo State Government for their proactive response.”

Why FG nominated Obaseki to lead Nigeria’s delegation to Biennale Arte 2024

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, was nominated by the Federal Government to lead the Nigerian delegation to the Biennale Arte 2024 due to his government’s landmark successes in promoting the State’s rich cultural assets, arts, and heritage and advancing the economic potential of tourism in Edo State and Nigeria.

The governor is expected to be in the Veneto region of Italy from tomorrow, Tuesday 16th to 18th April 2024, and will be serving as the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition (Biennale Arte) organized by La Biennale di Venezia.

In a letter to the organisers and the Italian Government to nominate Governor Obaseki as the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion and leader of the country’s delegation to the art festival which is one of the world’s most prestigious cultural art exhibitions, the Federal Government said Obaseki’s bold and transformative reforms in Edo’s arts and culture sector is in line with its quest to revitalize the cultural sector as the main revenue generator for the country.

The letter reads, “We would like to propose Edo State Government as the Commissioner for the Nigerian Pavilion and would like to respectfully put forward Governor Godwin Obaseki from the Edo State Government to be the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2024.

“Edo State and its capital city, Benin City, have been a main heritage, cultural artistic hub in Nigeria for centuries, and Governor Obaseki has a strong desire to support arts and culture.

“In support of this centuries-old arts and culture tradition, the government of Edo State is planning to develop a cultural district in the centre of Benin City. The Cultural Hub is intended to span a large expanse of land that will bring in new structures and also accommodate existing ones such as the National Museum Benin City.

“The development of the Cultural District is intended to expand the cultural and creative industries to attract tourists to the country.”

The Federal Government further noted, “This giant move is in tandem with the Federal Government's quest to revitalize the cultural sector as the main revenue generator for the country. These plans are also being supported by other stakeholders and partners.”

The governor will, as part of activities lined up for the event, sign an agreement with the Italian Government to foster sociocultural and economic relationship that will be beneficial to the improved growth, development, and productivity of Edo State and Italy.

The partnership, according to the organizers, will further facilitate cooperation in technical and vocational training, advance opportunities in the agricultural sector, enhance Information Technology capacity, promote tourism, increase economic opportunities in the textile industry and promote social and cultural relationships between both countries.

Obaseki celebrates Eid-el-Fitr with Muslims in Edo, assures better support

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, joined Muslim faithful in the State to celebrate Eid-El Fitr after the successful completion of the Ramadan fast.

Obaseki, who hosted the Muslims at the Government House in Benin City, assured them of better collaboration and support.

Obaseki was accompanied by the Edo State Head of Service (HOS), Dr. Anthony Okungbowa and Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare and other top government functionaries.

The governor said, “As a government, we must continue to work with religious leaders because citizens in distress can easily meet religious leaders as they know and can deal with issues swiftly. So, we must cooperate with religious bodies.

“We know things are difficult for citizens but we will continue to pray to God to see us through this trying period and will overcome like we did during COVID-19. There is hunger in the land and we will continue to support palliatives and others.

“I thank the Chief Imam of Benin and Muslim faithful in Edo as in the last seven and half years, you have been a pillar and have helped us consolidate and renew our beliefs as Edo people. I thank you for the peace you have continued to help us maintain in our State.”

According to him, “Listening to the Chief Imam made me realize that all of you are close observers of what we have done in the State. One government can't finish all the work and what we have been doing in the last seven and half years was re-directing the path Edo must go.

“What we met was not what it ought to be but we have tried to change the narrative and now instead of our young people travelling out for greener pastures, people are coming to Edo for livelihood.”

Assuring on efforts to ensure sustainability of the government’s projects and achievements in the seven and half years, Obaseki noted, “When the time is right, by the grace of God, I will bring my successor to you, so that you will understand how we have come along in this last seven years so that we can build on what we have achieved and not go back to the situation we met.”

Commending Obaseki for his inclusive style of governance, the Chief Imam of Benin Central Mosque, Alhaji Fatai Enabulele hailed the Governor’s developmental strides across various sectors of the State’s economy.

He assured that the Muslim community in the State will continue to support the governor to finish well and strong.

Edo swears in 38-year-old Omobayo as new Deputy Governor

…Obaseki says choice of Omobayo a symbol of belief in power of youth to transform Edo

38-year-old Omobayo Marvellous Godwins has been sworn in as the new Deputy Governor of Edo State.

He was sworn in, on Monday, at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, by the Edo State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa.

His swearing in followed the impeachment of Philip Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA).

Dignitaries at the swearing in include Governor Godwin Obaseki; Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq.; members of EDHA; Chief of Staff to Edo State Governor, Dr. Osaigbovo Iyoha;, Chairman Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi; Local Governments Chairmen; party leaders, Permanent Secretary from various Ministries, PDP leaders across the State, traditional leaders from Akoko-Edo, among others.

Speaking at the swearing in ceremony, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, said the choice of the new deputy governor will provide the needed impetus to rally round all interests and persuasions within the State to work more closely together in realising our vision for a viable, strong and prosperous State that will be the envy of all.

According to Obaseki, “At 38 years old, the new deputy governor is a symbol of our undying belief in the power of our youth to transform our dear State, bringing vigour and renewed energy to the drive to place young people at the centre of our politics and developmental agenda. He is a man for this season.”

The governor said, “It is with profound respect and humility that I address you this morning on this auspicious occasion of the swearing in of Omobayo Marvellous as our new deputy governor, who will be working with me in these last few months of my administration as we make progress on our promise to finish strong for the benefit of our dear people.

“We have run a very interesting and eventful tenure since we took office in 2016 and gained your trust to continue on our mandate for another term in 2020, and at no point in this journey did I envisage that I will be having to work with two deputy governors before the end of my eight-year run in office. But as the Bible says in Proverb 16: 9: ‘You may make your plans, but it is God that directs your actions.’

“The legislative arm of government, in the past few weeks, carried out their constitutional role, providing checks and balances in our democracy, and today, we have arrived at this difficult but inevitable juncture.”

He added, “As there cannot be a vacuum in government, we have by consensus selected Omobayo Marvellous to take over the baton as the new deputy governor of our dear State.

“A thorough-bred young professional, his choice will provide the needed impetus to rally round all interests and persuasions within the State to work more closely together in realising our vision for a viable, strong and prosperous State that will be the envy of all.”

In his remarks, His Royal Highness, the Imah of Somorika, Oba Sule Idaiye, thanked the Governor for this position, noting that the decision to appoint someone from Akoko Edo as Deputy Governor was historic.

“In the history of Edo State, you have broken the record again with the choice of a Deputy Governor from Akoko-Edo. We are all celebrating today. This is the biggest position ever for the area.

“You are a magician. As to how you arrived at the 38 years old Omobayo Marvellous Godwins is surprising. The Deputy Governor is a machine, loved by the people, pleasing to our people. We thank you for what you have done for our people. We thank you for this great thing you have done for our people."

In his response, the new deputy governor thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve, pledging to work assiduously with the governor to finish well and strong.

Describing Obaseki as a youth-friendly governor, Omobayo said, “This appointment shows the governor seems to understand Akoko-Edo very well and the complexity there in. I thank the governor for today is a day of the Lord. If I am to draw the face of the Lord right now with a pen and drawing sheet, I will draw the face of Godwin Obaseki.

“I am not the best youth to come out from Edo State, this could only have been God. I understand my job description which is to actually complement the work of the governor. We have a consummate administrator like Governor Obaseki. I have studied his developmental plan over the years very sincerely. I have also looked at the master plan of this administration and will surely support him to finish well. I admire his style of administration and am sure to build on the existing structure in the plan as an engineer.”

PoliticsWe’re Empowering, Grooming Youths For Leadership, Says Edo Govt by Aisosa25(op): 7:15pm On Apr 03, 2024
We’re empowering, grooming youths for leadership, says Edo govt

The Edo State Government has said it is grooming youths in the State for leadership, empowering them with the skills and tools to thrive and become globally competitive.

The Chief of Staff to the Edo State Governor, Dr. Osaigbovo Iyoha, said this when he received the National President of Niger Delta Students Union Government (NIDSUG), Comrade Scott Ogunseri, and his executives from the nine Niger Delta States, who were on a courtesy visit to his office, at the Government House, in Benin City.

Iyoha, who identified the indispensable role of youths in societal development, urged the union to brace up and make themselves ready to take up leadership through active engagement and participation in the country’s political process.

Commending the leadership of the union for their achievements since assumption of office, he pledged the state government’s continuous support and partnership.

He stated, “Edo is busy now as the political activities in the State have increased and the State is on top of the political ladder in Nigeria as the next election in Nigeria will take place in Edo State.

“We are doing a lot as we round up this administration to finish well and very strongly as there are lots of projects we have started and want to finish and conclude before leaving office.

“The youths should be ready to participate and not stay aloof in politics. They should not say we are not politicians. Let's look at the big picture ahead as we have a long way to go. Look at the candidates in the election, look at the one you want to be like, the one you think can do the job, the person you feel will make the Country and State a better place for you.”

Iyoha further charged, “This should not be about the party but the person. It should be about our tomorrow as we have to get things right. We are not doing well as a Country and need to take the Country back.

“We should not stay back but rather have our voter’s card to vote for the right person and change the Country. We are stakeholders in our own future.”

He added, “Your programme, enhancing students in the area of politics is key as it’s one of the areas we have failed as a nation. Participating in school politics prepares you for political life outside the campus and helps you to stand on a firm ground.”

Commending the association for embarking on the campaign against social vices in society and assuring of the government’s continued support, the Chief of Staff said, “It’s important we skill up side by side with whatever degree we have as individuals. We should make sure we skill up in some areas to keep up with whatever challenges we face economically. We should look at other areas where we can improve our lives rather than relying on our degree alone.”

Earlier, Comrade Scott Ogunseri thanked the Edo State Government for its support and encouragement which has served as motivation for the executives’ performance in the last five months in office.

PoliticsEdo Reels Gains Of Obaseki’s Reforms As Okpella Cement, Don Mac Ltd, Duport, Oth by Aisosa25(op): 5:25pm On Apr 02, 2024
Edo reels gains of Obaseki’s reforms as Okpella Cement, Don Mac Ltd, Duport, others lead firms with pioneer status

… manufacturing, food processing, agribusiness emerge as active sectors

The expansive reforms by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration have attracted a number of companies into Edo State which now enjoy pioneer status approval from the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC).

The details of the company’s status were released by the NIPC in its Report on Pioneer Status Incentive Application for Third Quarter of 2023 covering July to September, 2023.

The NIPC said the release is in compliance “with the requirements of the Industrial Development (Income Tax Relief) Act Cap I7, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and the Pioneer Status (Delegation of Certain Statutory Functions) Order of 2017.”

According to the commission, the companies in Edo State with active pioneer status include Okpella Cement Plc, which employs 570 staff and has invested N178 billion in its operations which span manufacturing of cement, limestone, and plaster in the Okpella axis of the State.

The other companies include: “Don Mac Limited, which has invested N8 billion in the State and employs 175 staff. It has an active license which spans for 3 years, from 2021 to 2024. The company is involved in the manufacturing of gas cylinders, tanks, reservoirs and containers of metal.”

Other companies in the State that are processing their applications include Saro Allied Resources and Processing Nigeria Limited, Duport Midstream Company, Greenhills Agricultural Products Limited, Dufil Prima Foods Plc and Flour Mills Nigeria Plc.

The featured companies are those that have invested in the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP) and other off-takers in the agribusiness sector. Manufacturing companies such as Don Mac Limited put up a strong following with the volume of investment. This is just as cement manufacturing is captured with Okpella Cement Limited, operated by Dangote Group.

Lecturer and policy analyst at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ikponmwosa Nosakhare said the development bodes well for the local economy, as it is evident of the State’s dramatic shift from a civil service State to an industrial haven.

“The State has taken a turn for the better as the rise of manufacturing, food processing and agribusiness concerns means increased productivity and more jobs for the locals. It also means that the graduates from the universities in the State are more likely to find jobs locally. The labour requirements are quite specific so we expect that a lot of effort would go into supporting the higher institutions in the State.”

He added that though a form of investment incentive, the pioneer status policy is engineered to lead to growth and expansion in the local economy in the long run because the companies would boost local capacity and ultimately contribute to economic returns.

Edo to host Nigeria’s largest coated calcium carbonate processing plant

… facility already under construction

On the back of reforms by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, Edo State is set to host one of Nigeria’s largest coated calcium carbonate factories in Lampese, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the State.

The Commissioner for Mining and Energy, Hon. Enaholo Ojiefoh, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists, said the facility is already under construction and will run at 200,000mt capacity.

Ojiefoh also noted that Rosatum, one of Europe’s largest nuclear energy companies, has commenced exploration of lithium in Edo and has gotten the state government’s approval to build a lithium processing plant.

According to him, “We have allocated land for the company to build a lithium processing plant and it will soon commence production of lithium batteries in the State.

“We are also very keen on driving the governor’s holistic industrialization plans and have performed the groundbreaking ceremony for one of the biggest coated calcium carbonate factories in Nigeria here in Lampese. It is under construction and will run at 200,000mt capacity.

“Also, a Commodities Trading and Mineral Analysis Center is being completed in Dangbala in Akoko-Edo.”

According to him, the State Government has secured over 40 new licenses for solid mineral deposits in the State through Associates Mining and Investment Company, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) promoted by the state government, noting that the State will rent the licenses to interested private investors to exploit the mineral deposits in the State.

The Commissioner further stated that not less than three multinational companies are constructing processing plants in the State, which is an indication that the state’s solid mineral market is attaining maturity.

Obaseki: Edo children’s literacy, numeracy rates now at 70percent, at par with counterparts in Europe, Asia

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said children’s literacy and numeracy rates in the State are now at 70 per cent, and at par with their peers in Europe and Asia.

Obaseki, who spoke in a chat with journalists, noted that the 70 percent is far more than the national percentage which is 30 percent.

The governor said this was achieved by building a resilient education system over the past seven and half years through the Edo State Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme.

He explained that when his administration came on board, the State’s educational system had collapsed, which necessitated the urgent need for a holistic reform in the education sector to tackle learning poverty by leveraging technology to improve learning outcomes.

According to him, these reforms have led to the training of over 11,000 teachers and impacted over 400,000 children across various schools in the State.

He noted, “We had a unique experience when we came on board. We had a huge challenge in terms of education. Edo State at the time was a prime source for human trafficking and illegal migration. Between 2016 and 2017, we had more than 30,000 young Edo boys and girls who had got themselves to Libya to cross over to Europe.

"A lot of our young people could not find jobs because they were not employable and the reason was the educational system had collapsed. As a government, it was a wake-up call that we needed to do something drastic and more fundamental.

“We needed to look at the foundation of our educational system to understand why our children were not learning so as to take necessary and urgent steps to fix it. This led to the launch of the Edo State Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) Programme, which today has continued to gain global acclaim.

The governor further stated, “Today, children’s literacy and numeracy rates in Edo are now 70% at par with their peers in Europe, more than the national percentage which is 30%. The reform has trained more than 11,000 teachers and impacted 400,000 children.

“In these past few years, as a government, we are confident that we have built a resilient education system with the EdoBEST programme and tackled learning poverty by leveraging technology to improve learning outcomes.”

Edo, LAPO seal deal to empower, support small businesses in 18 LGAs

The Edo State Government has entered into a partnership with LAPO Microfinance Bank to empower and support small businesses in the 18 local councils of the State.

The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., signed the agreement on behalf of the state government, on Monday, at the Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

While noting the future impact of the new deal, Ogie said micro finance schemes, all over the world, are the engine room of the economy.

He said, “I congratulate the board, Edojobs and LAPO Microfinance Bank and appeal to all beneficiaries to make use of the loan facilities that will be given as it's not a grant and should be put into good use.

“Microfinance schemes all over the world are the engine room of the economy. These small companies you see around, the number of people they employ is a lot and the government doesn’t take note of them. Governor Godwin Obaseki does take note because he is an investment banker. The governor is doing a lot for Edo people.”

Earlier, the Chairman of the Advisory Board MSME Fund, Peter Obaseki, who commended the government for its sustained support for small businesses in the State, noted: “This is the mandate of Governor Godwin Obaseki for economic empowerment of small businesses. The difference is on the concessionary interest rate at 9 per cent to enable residents of the State to benefit.

“This is part of the social transfer scheme to empower residents in Edo State and it must not be an urban phenomenon. It must get to each of the 18 local government areas of the State. Enumeration and disbursement must go to each of the 18 local government areas.”

He further stated, “This scheme is not a grant but a loan. It is a concessionary loan and the test of the scheme is the ability to revolve not to be stuck. We will ensure that enumeration, disbursement and refund is completely monitored, ensuring that the funds come back to enable others benefits.”

Speaking on behalf of LAPO, the Executive Director, Corporate Services, Gloria Bassey, hailed the state government’s commitment to youth development, reassuring sustained partnership with the government.
