Clean energy drive: Edo to float new gas company, sets target to convert 60% of vehicles to run on CNG The Edo State Government has said it has set up Edo Green Energy Limited to be run as a private sector-facing entity which will engage in the commercialization of gas in the State. Commissioner of Mining and Energy, Hon. Enaholo Ojiefoh, who said this in a chat with journalists, said the company will lead in the extraction, processing, storage and sales of gas in the State. According to him, “The Company will sell gas as Liquified Natural Gas or we convert and sell it as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Already we have a group of investors. “Our plan is to convert 60% of vehicles in Edo to run on CNG. The idea is to significantly reduce the cost of transportation in the State. NIPCO is already working on this. But the new company is coming to work with existing filling stations to do conversions. This will be done by working with an existing Independent Petroleum Marketing Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) team. They already have fuel stations across the State. “We will then have CNG stations across the senatorial districts of the State. We are not stopping at vehicles; we want to ensure that we convert all commercial tricycles operating in the State. Instead of buying fuel for N20,000, you will have to buy N5,000 worth of fuel.” He added, “The CNG innovation runs on an automated system, which ensures that once the fuel is finished, it automatically switches to gas. We also want to ensure that we also convert generators to CNG. We want everyone in Edo to use clean energy.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/clean-energy-drive-edo-to-float-new-gas-company-sets-target-to-convert-60-of |
Obaseki shares Edo’s education reforms’ success story at LSE Africa Summit in London …dazzles global leaders, participants with impact of EdoBEST programme, others The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, at the weekend, dazzled global and business leaders, policymakers and other participants at the LSE Africa Summit 2024 in London, United Kingdom, with the impact of his administration’s education sector reforms, reeling out how these reforms in the past seven and half years have improved learning outcomes, especially at the foundational level, tackling learning poverty. The event was held with the theme, “African Minds Transforming Futures: Building Resilient Education Systems.” Obaseki who was a keynote speaker at the forum dazzled the participants with his lecture on, “The Future of Education in Africa: The Role of African Players in Advancing Education in Africa.” Obaseki, while reiterating the need to sustain investment in education to effectively harness the potential and resourcefulness of Africa’s youthful population, said the continent’s youths hold the key to its sustainable growth and development. “By 2050, Africa will have at least 33 percent of the global youth population and this population holds the key to shaping our world, our culture, and politics, among others. This gives us immense opportunity to reshape the world. However, a bulk of this population could become a liability if we do not invest in them.” “So, on one hand, we have this asset that holds the key to Africa’s future and development, and on the other hand is the challenges. I believe that if we have the political will and make strategic investments, build a resilient and dynamic education system, prioritize skills development to address global challenges, and encourage innovation and inclusive governance, we stand a very good chance of resolving and tackling these challenges.” While identifying obstacles to improving education and youth development in the continent, the governor listed poor infrastructure, lack of teacher training, poverty level and digital divide in accessing necessary technology for education as major obstacles. He stated, “So if we must build a resilient education system in the region, we must understand that education should not just be seen as constructing buildings and classrooms. It is more about igniting curiosity, fostering critical thinking, and empowering young minds to reach their full potential. We must focus on nurturing the flames of knowledge and inspiration transcending mere bricks and mortar.” Sharing success stories of the State’s education sector reforms, Obaseki noted, “We had a unique experience when we came on board. We had a huge challenge in terms of education. Edo State at the time was a prime source for human trafficking and illegal migration. Between 2016 and 2017, we had more than 30,000 young Edo boys and girls who had got themselves to Libya to cross over to Europe. “Our children were significantly underperforming academically; teachers needed more encouragement, support and modern tools and techniques; schools were not properly managed and there was no community ownership of basic education. At the time, the government lacked real-time concrete data for policy making and interventions.” He added, “We knew we needed to create and strengthen our education ecosystem focusing on foundational learning, on the basis of access, inclusion, and quality control. “We focused on system strengthening and organizational development, making the institutions stronger to drive these reforms. We also knew that the key to education is teaching. So, we prioritized teachers’ professional development and quality assurance. We also concentrated on curriculum development and learning outcomes as well as community engagement and partnerships, while paying critical attention to school infrastructure and facilities.” The Governor noted that these efforts and reforms over the past seven and half years have repositioned the State among the top five education accelerator sub-nationals in Africa with radical changes that have positively transformed the education ecosystem. According to organisers of the LSE Africa Summit, “As Governor, Mr. Obaseki is at the forefront of re-enacting Governance in Nigeria and a strong proponent for the use of technology in Government to deliver efficient services to the people. Today, he leads the only State in Nigeria that has fully adopted e-Governance, ensuring that Government correspondences are paperless. “His innovative policies/programs include the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation ‘EdoBEST’, tackling learning poverty through technology, and utilizing public-private partnerships to enhance investment, promote industrialization, and stimulate economic growth in the State. “He spearheaded the Edo State Oil Palm Programme, positioning Edo as frontrunners in oil palm production in Africa. Additionally, Mr. Obaseki created The Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub, a state-of-the-art facility supporting film and music production to boost opportunities within the creative industry.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R: Professor David Luke; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Democratic Republic of the Congo Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ndolamb Ngokwey; Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Movemeback & The Continent Group, Charles Sekwalor, and Cameroon High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Albert Njoteh Fotabong, on the sidelines of the LSE Africa Summit 2024 in London, United Kingdom, at the weekend. https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/obaseki-shares-edos-education-reforms-success-story-at-lse-africa-summit-in

Edo govt, NDLEA restrategise on combating drug menace, begins rehabilitation of 12 drug addicts … mops up 153,000kg of cannabis, destroys 14,000 tonnes, others The Edo State Government is strengthening collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other sister security agencies to improve strategies and efforts at combating the drug menace in the State. The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, received the new Commander of NDLEA in the State, Callys Alumona and other officers of the agency at the Government House, Benin City, to brainstorm and chart ways to strengthen the war against illicit drugs in the State. Obaseki represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Osaigbovo Iyoha, said the government was empowering youths in the State to discourage them from substance abuse and other social vices, commending the new commander for raiding hotspots in the State and other efforts to end the menace in Edo State. He said, “The issue of drugs for us is a problem that we are taking seriously as an administration because the drug problem leads to other criminal activities. Most accidents occur as a result of the abuse and use of drugs. “Government is taking the issue of drug abuse seriously. We have visited Col. Buba Maruwa in Abuja to discuss how to rid the State of illicit drugs. It is important that you have visited Ihama, Country Home Hotel Roads, and other locations, because that shows that you are ready to work. We thank you and want to let you know that there is more work to be done. “We are ready to provide the necessary support needed for you to succeed in this fight against drug abuse in the State.” Obaseki continued: “I can show you the hotspots around Benin City. We have over 15 hotspots which we are monitoring. The drug business is troubling because some officers collude with these drug sellers and users. They come into these hotspots to request for settlement and allow the illicit business to continue. In doing this, lives are being destroyed. “A breach of intelligence report may have been responsible for the death of some of your men in Edo North during one of your operations to raid drug spots.” He added, “You have a lot to do as we will collaborate with you and other sister security agencies to win the war against this drug issue. Nobody can do it alone. Synergy will help us succeed and win against all odds.” Earlier, the new Commander of NDLEA, Alumona said about 12 drug abusers have been apprehended and are currently being rehabilitated. He noted, “We have been to Ihama and Country Home Hotel Roads and other hotspots for sale of illicit drugs in the State. What we saw was not pleasing at all. Drugs are being hawked like pure water in these areas. This experience has led us to begin to raid some of these places identified. We have raided Ihama about three times to get these people. “We will address the issue of drugs seriously as we have destroyed dry season farming of cannabis and sativa. Our efforts have led to the destruction of about 14,000 tonnes of cannabis sativa. We have mopped up from the streets and about 153,000kg of cannabis and other assorted drugs and this is just the beginning.” PHOTO CAPTION L-R: National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Deputy Commander, Operations/Training, Edo State Command, Nkemdeme Geraldine; representative of Edo State Governor and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Osaigbovo Iyoha, and Commander NDLEA, Edo State Command, Callys Alumona, during a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City, Thursday, March 21, 2024. https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/edo-govt-ndlea-restrategise-on-combating-drug-menace-begins-rehabilitation

Edo Regional, Benin City Master Plans roadmap to Edo’s progress, devt …engages stakeholders in Edo Central on 30-year development plan The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the State’s Regional Development and Benin City Master Plans will serve as a roadmap for the progress and sustainable development of the State within the next 30 years. Obaseki said this during a stakeholders’ engagement on the State’s 30-year development masterplan held at the Okaijesan Town Hall in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area (LGA) of the State. The engagement session brought together stakeholders from Esan West, Esan South-East, Esan Central, Esan North -East and Igueben LGAs. The governor said, “Planning must start from our Communities and all of us must collaborate to ensure that the plan works as one person can't solve the problem. “The masterplan is a document that lays the roadmap for development which will last for 30 years. That is an entire generation and we will continue to check the plan every five years to measure the progress we have recorded. “The plan will keep other leaders in check as the people will be able to ask our leaders questions on why they have not done this or that, according to the plan. We want to assure the people that this plan will certainly lead us to development.” Obaseki continued: “We are on this engagement drive to enable Esan people to contribute to the masterplan. This plan, when implemented, will also develop the grassroots. “The masterplan is for all of us, not for one person. The promises of politicians are not master plans. Most politicians like to deceive the people but this can't work anymore. The master plan will guide and expose politicians and leaders that come to office to deceive the people.” Restating his commitment to ensuring a prosperous and progressive Edo where all citizens are empowered to realize their full potential, Obaseki noted, “I didn’t meet any plan on ground but will leave a plan before leaving office.” A Director of Policy, Planning, Research and Statistics at the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, Engr. Dr. John Obanor, said: “Our focus is to collaborate to make Edo State one of the States with the best city linkages in Africa. The Obaseki-led administration has completed 56 roads in Esan land and about nine roads are still under construction, with about 17 other road projects already designed.” The Onogie of Igueben HRH Ehizogie Eluojieror thanked the governor for his developmental strides in Esanland, commending him for making the College of Education in Igueben the headquarters and fixing the Ugiogba Road. He explained that as against the rumour making the rounds that the school has been closed, the school is very functional. Also, the Onogie of Ewu Kingdom, Alhaji Abdulrazak Isesele Ojiefoh lll thanked the governor for helping his people solve the gully erosion problem facing Ewu kingdom, adding, “We want to equally thank you for reviving the Bendel Fill and Flour Mill which is now operational.” PHOTO CAPTION L-R: Edo State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security - Stephen Ehikioya Idehenre; Commissioner for Physical Planning, Housing, Urban and Regional Development, Isoken Omo; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, during a stakeholders’ engagement on the Edo State’s 30-year development masterplan, at the Okaijesan Town Hall in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State, Wednesday, March 20, 2024. https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/edo-regional-benin-city-master-plans-roadmap-to-edos-progress-devt

Obaseki: Local manufacturing, exports best bet to tackle forex crisis ... oil palm revolution has positioned Edo to lead Nigeria’s exports The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the Federal Government can tackle the current foreign exchange crisis by advancing fiscal policies to encourage manufacturers to boost local production and access necessary credit to boost exports of Nigeria made products. Obaseki said this when he received the National President of the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN), Otunba Francis Meshioye with other executives, who were on a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City. The governor, who said the survival of the nation’s economy depended on the manufacturers’ association, noted that Edo State is leveraging its unique advantage with the availability of raw materials for production and manufacturing to drive economic development. He noted, “Nigeria in the last 40 years has continued to rely on imported goods and services that they don’t produce. We have gotten to a point where we must consume what we manufacture in this nation because we don't have foreign exchange. We don't export any manufactured goods as a nation and MAN has a role to help by redirecting the country towards manufacturing.” Obaseki further stated, “We have to create the enabling environment for the association to thrive and move away from the notion that it’s not our responsibility to create wealthy people, and government should not be in competition with the private sector, or people providing services for us as it affects the policy thinking of government where the government sees these people as criminals but those who pad budget as nationalist.” On efforts to boost production activities in the State, Obaseki said, “We have come out with strong environmental policies to re-grow the forest and wood industry, ensuring that forest guards are re-introduced to police the forest and stop illegal logging, and have created encouraging policies for people who want to go into timber plantation.” Noting that Edo State has the largest oil palm development programme in Africa, the governor noted that, “The State through the ESOPP Programme gave seven investors 70,000 hectares of land to grow oil palm.” According to him, “In Edo State, we long saw this coming, and we took bold steps and one of the fundamental steps taken is re-structuring our educational system, particularly the foundational education, ensuring we produce a generation of citizens that are well taught. We see ourselves in the next few decades producing the best quality manpower in Nigeria.” Earlier, the National President of the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria commended the governor’s strides in Edo’s economy, making the State a leading destination for private sector Investments. “With the Midwest as a hub for industrial activities, it’s imperative for collaboration with the government to revive the manufacturing Industry in Edo State through policies and programmes to fast-track industrial growth. We are glad about the progress in driving the influx of investments in Edo through the annual Alaghodaro which has birthed the Duport Refinery, Green Hill Ethanol Plant, Ossiomo Power, and Edo Production hub, among others where the private sector partners with the government in manufacturing.”

Obaseki said this when he led other government functionaries to the Edo State Library Complex, at the State Secretariat, Benin City, to cheer Osariemen Angel Asein, an indigene of the State who is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon reading aloud by an individual. As at the time of the governor’s visit, Osariemen Asein, who kicked off the attempt on February 23, 2024, has read for 207 hours, surpassing the current 145-hour Guinness World Record for the longest marathon reading aloud. Speaking to journalists, the governor said the vision of Osariemen aligns well with what his administration has done in the State in the last seven years, developing the reading culture of our young ones and re-enacting the education system, particularly basic education. He said, “I am very excited and it's gratifying for me to see one of our own, Osariemen Angel Asein attempting to break the Guinness World Record in reading. It's just ties in with what we have preached and the work we have done in the State in the last seven years, trying to re-enact education, particularly basic education, and develop the reading culture of our young ones and children in this State. “It’s quite pleasing to see one of them trying to take it to another level, letting the world see how well Edo young people are doing; how aspirational and globally competitive they have become. I believe that there can't be a greater reward for our administration than what this young lady is doing. I am asking all of you to support her in this quest as we are here to support her as she has broken the world record in reading; what a record to break! it's quite gratifying and fulfilling.” Obaseki who also received Prof. Demas Nwoko, one of Africa’s greatest architects at the library to support the aspiration of Osariemen Asein, commended him for his architectural work across the globe. He noted that Edo State has also benefited from Prof Nwoko’s architectural work as Oba Akenzua Cultural Center is one of his works. Obaseki noted, “Here we have Prof. Demas Nwoko, most people may not realize he is one of Africa’s greatest architects; he is joining us here today. One of his seminar works is the Oba Akenzua Cultural Center which is one of the 1001 buildings you must see in this world before you die. “He is here in Edo State with us as Osariemen read from one of his books. He is here to see one of his works, the Oba Akenzua Cultural Center which we are going to finally try to complete and make it part of the cultural district which we are building for people to come and see.” In addition, the Edo State Ministry of Education through its EdoBest Programme launched the Book and Art Festival with the maiden theme, “Every Child a Reading Champion.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (right), with an indigene of Edo State who is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon reading aloud by an individual, Osariemen Angel Asein, at the State Library, in Benin City, Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Obaseki boosts emergency response with launch of Edo EMS ...trains 200 community-based first responders The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has boosted emergency response with the launch of the first phase of the emergency medical services in the State. The emergency medical service provides toll free numbers of 112 and 739 linked to the Solomon Arase Command and Control Centre in the State to enable residents to get medical services within a space of ten minutes. The Edo EMS emergency medical services number for prompt response to emergency health issues covers Oredo, Egor, and other selected parts of the State for the first or pilot phase of the programme. 200 Community-Based First Responders (CBFR) are to be trained in the next one week to flag off the programme. Speaking to the 200 CBFR, at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA), Governor Godwin Obaseki said the Edo EMS emergency medical services number is one of the most innovative services that has been launched in Nigeria's healthcare system. According to him, “The Edo Emergency Medical Services is an integrated system, as you can't do one without the other. You must have a network of responders, carefully selected people across the network, give them required training and support, have communication devices, and a functional command and control Center where calls come in as each step is monitored, and a system that pays for these services on a sustainable basis. In Nigeria, we have not been able to sustain our emergency response. "We have been able to crack it in Edo State and I am here to be trained as an emergency responder. We must care for our people and care for each other. We have partners ready to collaborate with us as they are truly committed to providing emergency services for our people.” He further noted, "This service is possible because of the diligent steps taken in the last six years as a government to think through how to provide services for our people and citizens, particularly in the healthcare sector. We realized early that healthcare is not equal to hospitals but a system that provides for the well-being of the people. "Early in my administration, we decided on the health improvement plan for Edo State and thanks to the CMD of UBTH who was with us in the beginning when we conceptualized what you are seeing today. "We must decentralize health care, and make sure the primary health care system works as that system has recruited most of the responders we see here today. Healthcare is all about having committed and dedicated people that will man the healthcare system and make it work.” Speaking on the State’s Health Insurance Scheme and efforts to make healthcare affordable for Edo residents, Obaseki said: “Our own health insurance scheme is one of the best run in Nigeria as we have over 200,000 enrollees in the short term we have established it. The enrollees have been paying their premium diligently and we are proud of their services.” He charged the responders, “You are the most critical factor as you are being trained as emergency responders. I want to thank you for volunteering yourself to receive the training and skills required to provide the support. I want to assure you that we have thought it through very carefully as yours is a network to be encouraged and supported because you are a critical factor in saving lives in Edo State.” Representative of Partner Emergency Response Africa, Folake Owodunni who made a presentation on Project Overview of Edo EMS said emergency care is the right of every citizen and should be accessed by everyone in the State. She noted, “We have selected 200 responders who will be trained as we have developed a robust training curriculum. We have revitalized and prepared four ambulances for the pilot phase for Oredo, Egor and selected parts of the State.” PHOTO CAPTION L-R: Edo State Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Kingsley Uwagbale; Project Director, ERA, Folake Owodunni; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; Project Manager, ERA, Kate Ibeanusi, and Health Commissioner, Dr. Samuel Alli, during the launching of the first phase of the emergency medical services in Edo State, on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/obaseki-boosts-emergency-response-with-launch-of-edo-ems

Obaseki assures sustained collaboration, pledges to promote independence of judiciary The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government will continue to prioritise reforms to guarantee the independence of the State’s Judiciary, assuring better collaboration with the Judiciary and other stakeholders to sustain the peace, security and stability witnessed in the State. Obaseki gave the assurance when he received members of the body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) led by Ighodalo Imadengbelo who paid him a courtesy visit in his office, at the Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital. He said his government will continue to support the Judiciary, ensuring a safe and enabling environment for the judicial arm of government to effectively carry out its duties and responsibilities. Obaseki said, “I want to leave a stronger Judiciary than I met. We believe in the independence of the Judiciary and that’s why I have signed into law the autonomy bill of the Judiciary and the legislative arm of government. “We need these institutions to be strong and independent because they serve as a check to each other and serve to strengthen the basis of our democracy. “The Judiciary is the bastion of our democracy as it's the Judiciary we run to when politicians don’t agree. The Judiciary is very important and the basis for our existence because without law and order there will be anarchy.” He further noted, “Investing in the judiciary is very important and a priority as we have invested in physical infrastructure like building official accommodations for Judges across the State and have earmarked more developments for the system; we are revamping the Magistracy and will soon start commissioning Magistrate Courts across the State. “We have worked to improve the efficiency of the Judiciary through training in excess of 100 court reporters over the last few years, deploying technology and connecting our Courts across the State with fibers and high speed internet connectivity. We will make all the investments needed to make our Judiciary number one in Nigeria.” Obaseki added, “We are glad that you appreciate what we have done till date but what is more important is the improvement of physical infrastructure you see and in our view, is not as important as ensuring a total reform in the process of reforming the Judiciary itself.” Earlier, members of the body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), led by Ighodalo Imadegbelo commended the governor for his developmental strides in the Judiciary. Speaking on their behalf, Imadegbelo said, “We have watched you for the past seven years as governor of Edo State and we have seen what you have done in the State, especially for the Judiciary as the High Court Complex is a testament of your infrastructural development in the State. “As a critical stakeholder and the body of SANs, we always know what is happening in Nigeria. MPR: Obaseki blasts CBN, warns of tougher times ahead … ‘Nigeria must focus on production, discourage dollarization of nation’s economy’ .. ‘Edo among leading States in GDP growth’ The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has predicted tougher economic times for the country due to bad economic policies by the Federal Government, condemning the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to increase the interest rate to 22.75 percent. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the CBN had last week raised the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), also known as the benchmark interest rate by four hundred basis points to 22.75 percent from 18.75 percent. Obaseki, who spoke at the annual Edo Zone Bankers' Committee Dinner held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, cited the potential adverse effect of the interest rate increase by the CBN on businesses and the nation’s economy, reiterating the need to focus on productive activities. The governor said, “The next few months will be difficult because the policies rolled out by CBN will unfortunately not support growth in our economy. The interest rate is already high and jacking it up will not allow small businesses access to credit to make them grow. “We must focus on the fundamentals which is increasing production, making sure our citizens produce what we consume and depend less on imports. Our economic and monetary policies should not be determined by exchange rate alone. “The issue of increasing the cash reserves in a bid to tighten liquidity is going to be detrimental to our economy. We should focus on fiscal issues to enable us to grow our economy, not panic about the interest rate. Creating jobs should be a priority for us as a nation.” Commending the role of commercial banks in societal development, Obaseki tasked the banks to come up with products and services which can assist the majority of citizens in overcoming the harsh economic realities experienced nationwide. He however reassured that his government will continue to partner with the financial sector to cushion the effects of the present economic realities on the people of the State. Noting that his government has over the last seven and half years undertaken several policies and programmes to reposition the State as a leading subnational in terms of GDP growth, the governor reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the welfare of the people. He said, “We have built institutions, empowered our people with skills, and ensured they are gainfully employed and seven years after, we are ranked as one of the top States in terms of GDP growth in Nigeria. “I am here to thank you for collaborating with us to grow the economy of Edo State in the last seven years. You have supported me to make progress this far. I thank each bank and management for taking advantage of the opportunities created in the last seven years, especially with our reforms and growth. “In the last seven years, we have improved our security, ensuring our people walk freely as the ability to restore security gives confidence to our people who come back home to invest in our State.” The governor further stated, “Before now, our young ones traveled at will to seek greener pastures but our administration in 2017 got the report about how desperate our youths are traveling out but we have changed the narrative. “As I wind down as governor, I am leaving a strong State economically; agricultural production has been ramped up significantly. We are leaving a State that is the most digitally connected in Nigeria today as we have laid over 2,000km of fiber optic connection across the state and we have connected the 18 LGA and all your branches are well connected.” “We are leaving a State that is leading in terms of electricity generation. We have Azura, contributing to the stability of the national grid. We also have Ossiomo Power. Investors are ready to support our initiative in the State. We have the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Law that will allow us to regulate those who want to generate and distribute electricity in Edo State.” “We have laid the basis for economic growth and development in Edo State and Nigeria. We saw this difficult time coming but could not move and make the necessary decision that would have saved us, but those who ought to act to save us failed to do that, hence here we are today,” Obaseki added. How Edo’s transparent, open public procurement system is saving cost, driving devt, says Obaseki The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the transparent, open and technology-based public procurement system being operated in the State has helped the government significantly save monies which is deployed to pursue more developmental projects across the State, ensuring improved livelihoods for the people. Obaseki said this when he received members of the Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC) of Liberia led by the Executive Director, Bodger Scott Johnson, who were on a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City. The team is on an exchange programme visit to Edo to understudy the State’s e-procurement system which has continued to earn global acclaim. The governor said, “Procurement is at the core of our development. If we fail to procure properly and spend much more than we should on the procurement of goods and services, our development process will be stunted. It's important to us as a people who do not have financial resources to put in place systems and processes to get the most value for the money we are spending on behalf of our people. This is the core of our strategy and motivation to procure properly. “We started our process over 15 years ago when we obtained our first budget facilities and had to revamp our procurement system as a State. It has been a case of gradual growth ever since. “We have learnt some lessons along the way and will be able to share some of the lessons with you so that you will be able to avoid such pitfalls or challenges that we have to deal with.” He continued: “We want to let you know that, politically, it’s difficult but for the technical people on ground, you will want to do things right. There will be political pressure which is one of the biggest challenges you will have to face but if you have the political support, then you are likely to be able to hold your ground. “Technology will help you progress on e-procurement systems as it makes it easier in our view and better to have a properly structured and designed procurement process that is transparent to you and everybody else.” Obaseki added, “Procurement helps build trust as we don't take procurement for granted in Edo State.” Earlier, Bodger Scott Johnson said, “We have come to learn how the e-procurement processes work as we are planning to launch our e-procurement system. We are learning from the Edo State e-procurement team and taking great knowledge back home to impact our own e-procurement process. “We commend the friendship between Liberia and Nigeria as your Country played a very vital role in restoring peace in Liberia. We are grateful to Nigeria as our big brother and giant of Africa. We are happy because we are in safe hands in Nigeria.” He noted, “We are here to take back the knowledge learnt here and make our procurement better and less of human contact, making it transparent to ensure credibility.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R Executive Director, Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC) of Liberia, Bodger Scott Johnson; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq.; Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Edo State Procurement Agency, Henry Idogun, during a courtesy visit, at the Government House, in Benin City, recently. Edo developing a technological workforce to provide innovative solutions to societal problems, says Obaseki The Edo State Government has said reforms in the State’s civil service, over the past seven years, are aimed at developing a new generation of workers equipped with the necessary technology and expertise to create and provide innovative solutions to societal challenges. The government said it is developing a technologically savvy workforce and harnessing the power of technology to enhance performance across all sectors of the State. The Edo State Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa spoke during a Design Sprint Showcase event held at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy in Benin City, the Edo State capital. Represented by the Permanent Secretary of Human Resources, Mr. George Igberase, the Edo Head of Service reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to establishing functional institutions that are capable and well-empowered to address societal needs. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and facilitated by the ACIOE Associates in collaboration with the Edo State Government, the Design Sprint exercise empowered over 150 graduates and officers from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) within the State's civil and public service on the use of digital tools and processes to enhance service delivery. According to Okungbowa, “The administration of His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki from inception set out to revolutionize the traditional way of doing things by focusing on revamping the civil/ public service of the State. One of the cardinal objectives of this goal was to create institutions that work. “A look down seven years before now shows a period of unprecedented technological growth. The Government did not only embrace technology but adopted technology as a means of carrying out work processes in the service.” He added, “One of the impacts of this is an improved and technology-driven workforce. Today, we are celebrating the achievements of some of our first officers in the service who now think, breathe, and speak technology. Today the officers will pitch their prototypes to us having gone through rigorous sessions of workshops and field work to identify challenges. They will also propose solutions that can be delivered through technology.” In his remark, the Commissioner for Digital Economy, Science and Technology, Hon. Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor expressed confidence that the solutions developed during the course of the event would be put to good use, adding that the execution of projects stemming from these solutions would propel both the government and the governed forward. He noted, “We had this Programme for the last two weeks where civil/public servants in Edo State have been coming together to brainstorm to figure out solutions to some of the problems we have in Government and in our society. They were able to showcase competence and their knowledge in understanding possible solutions.” Stakeholders from various ministries, departments, agencies, and private partners attended the Design Sprint event. It also garnered participation from top government functionaries, including commissioners, Special Advisers, permanent secretaries, directors, and executive senior staff from different MDAs to discuss potential challenges affecting the State and explore innovative solutions to addressing them. Our core role is to provide security to our citizens and anyone resident in Edo State and we have succeeded so far because of the level of cooperation and assistance we have received from security agencies, particularly the federal security agencies like the military. “Under my watch, we have been able to improve the relationship between Edo State Government and the military such that today we have two operating bases, one in Ehor and the other in Sobe which have helped to provide comfort and assurance to our citizens that whatever the situation is, it can be dealt with.” “We can collaborate as you assist us in training our drivers as we have a transportation hub in government as its operation is now centralized. According to him, “Amid the huge success recorded in the global fight against female genital mutilation, there is the need to accelerate progress and eradicate this scourge completely, which makes it imperative for stakeholders to increase efforts in this regard, ensuring better investment, education and awareness on the dangers and consequences of this harmful practice.” Acknowledging the strides made in eliminating the scourge in totality, Obaseki said, “In Edo State, we take a strong stance against Female Genital Mutilation and have been working closely with all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community organisations, and religious leaders, among others to improve public education campaigns and raise awareness against this harmful practice to safeguard the health and well-being of our women and girls while promoting their rights and dignity. “We are implementing laws and policies that prohibit FGM and have provided penalties for those who perform the procedure. We are providing economic opportunities and alternative livelihoods for women and girls, to reduce the economic incentives for FGM, including job training and entrepreneurship programmes, and educational opportunities, among others.” Obaseki added, “While we have trained healthcare providers to identify and respond to cases of FGM, the government is also working assiduously with its partners to ensure that women and girls who have undergone FGM have access to comprehensive healthcare services, including post-FGM care, psychological support, and access to safe birth options, among others.” According to the United Nations, “Over the last three decades, the prevalence of FGM has declined globally. Today, a girl is one-third less likely to undergo FGM than 30 years ago. However, sustaining these achievements in the face of humanitarian crises such as disease outbreaks, climate change, armed conflict and more could cause a rollback of progress toward achieving gender equality and the elimination of FGM by 2030. More than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation. This year, nearly 4.4 million girls will be at risk of this harmful practice. This equates to more than 12,000 cases every day. “With seven years remaining in this decade of action, our collective actions must be centered around creating environments where girls and women can exercise their power and choice, enjoying full rights to health, education, and safety. And this is possible through investments in initiatives led by survivors of female genital mutilation who are challenging harmful gender and social norms. Their voices and actions can transform deeply rooted social and gender norms, allowing girls and women to realize their rights and potential in terms of health, education, income, and equality.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/obaseki-urges-increased-education-investment-to-accelerate-progress-against |
Ward Delegate Election: Edo PDP says results from Etsako Central canceled over kidnap of nine electoral officials ...urges aggrieved aspirants to approach Appeal C’ttee ...Aziegbemi says delegate election best in Nigeria since 1999 The Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anthony Aziegbemi, on Monday, explained that the State’s 3-man Ad-hoc Ward Delegate Electoral Committee led by Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah canceled results from Etsako Central Local Government Area because election did not hold in the LGA as nine electoral officers were kidnapped at Jattu on their way to the LGA. Aziegbemi disclosed this while briefing journalists in Benin City, on the success of the election that was held yesterday across the State, which he described as the best ever conducted in Nigeria since 1999. He said: "The Congresses went on well. It was peaceful, fair and credible but with one incident that led to the Committee canceling the exercise from Etsako Central. "The nine electoral officers were kidnapped around Jattu on their way to Etsako Central Local Government Area of the Edo State on the morning of the exercise. As at the time we were closing the Congress yesterday, the whereabouts of these men were not known. “The Commissioner of Police was immediately called upon to investigate the issue. As at the end of the exercise, the electoral officers were still not seen. So, the Committee took the decision to cancel results from Etsako Central as the result from that area will have no effect on the overall results in terms of the governorship primary on the 22nd of February 2024.” According to him, “In PDP, life comes first and the lives of the electoral officers are important. So, canceling the result was the best decision the committee took in this regard. People can't be in the kidnappers' den while the election takes place. “We expect that Etsako Central is supposed to give 31 delegates and overall, we are expecting 594 delegates to vote in the governorship primary later in February. If you take that ratio 31 to 594, perhaps the decision to cancel is the best taken by the Committee. “The governor has spoken with the Police and Inspector General of Police to ensure that these people regain their freedom and expect that they will not be harmed. The security situation in Edo State has improved tremendously and incidents of kidnapping have also reduced. This is a one-off act which is very sad; I trust the security agencies will get to the bottom of this.” Noting that the outcome of the delegate election was peaceful, fair, and credible, the PDP chairman further noted, “The electoral officers appointed by the electoral committee were all in their centers on time, making sure logistics were made available to ensure a smooth process. The process of the election was very credible and transparent. “The outcome of the Congress has shown that PDP in Edo State is the best organized in the Country. This is so because the leader of the party and governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki is driving the party to achieve this. “On behalf of the PDP family in Edo State, I congratulate the leader of the party in the State who has pushed us that much to be able to achieve such a credible, fair, and peaceful congress in the history of PDP in Nigeria.” He added, “In line with the timetable released by INEC and the PDP National Headquarters, on the 4th of February 2024, the National Working Committee organized the election of three ad-hoc delegates in Edo State. “I have never seen a well-organized and transparent election in the history of PDP and the Congress is the best organized since 1999 in Nigeria. We took it upon ourselves as a party to print the party's register in the 192 wards collation centers in the State. “The party’s card and voters card were used as means of identification. The electoral officers used these two important documents to clear members in the party's register to enable them to vote.” On aggrieved members, Aziegbemi noted: “They have a right to their views but I disagree with their position as the Congress was very peaceful, credible, and fair. I urge them to approach the appeal panel which was set up to address the grievance of aspirants and headed by Sen. Seriki Dickson former Governor of Bayelsa State.” |
Edo PDP applauds peaceful conduct of ward delegates congress, hails NWC, electoral c’ttee, others …condemns abduction of officials in Etsako Central, charges IGP on swift investigation The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended the National Working Committee (NWC) and other stakeholders for the peaceful and credible conduct of the ward delegates’ election to elect three ad-hoc delegates across the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 192 wards of the State. The State Organising Secretary, while condemning the abduction of the officials, called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to order a swift investigation of the incident and promptly ensure the release of the affected officials, whose families are troubled by the fate of their loved ones. Hon. Philip Shaibu, where eight of the officials heading to Etsako Central Local Government Area for the election were abducted.” He noted, “The party hereby calls on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to order a swift investigation of the incident and promptly ensure the release of the affected officials, whose families are troubled by the fate of their loved ones.” Anenih added, “Edo State chapter of the PDP by this medium expresses profound gratitude to leaders of our great party, the National Working Committee, the Ward Electoral Committee, and all organs of the party for their keen supervision of this process that has resulted in a successful ward. |

Obaseki while receiving the group, led by the Chairman, Alhaji Badamasi Saleh, at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital, hailed them for their contributions to the peace and development of the State. Governor Obaseki who noted that many youths in the Country had resorted to drug abuse and other criminal activities as a result of the hardship they face, said his government will continue to empower more youths to discourage them from crime and criminality. He said, “We have tried as a government to reorganize the security structure; this is the reason for the state’s vigilante whose responsibility is to provide security in the various Communities. “Some of you have been here for years and we have lived in harmony and we don’t discriminate. You have been instrumental in supplying food items, and cattle, among others as such we do not joke with you. We are ensuring everything is fine. The security attack is not targeted at the Hausa Community. But what we are facing is a general in society.” He further noted, “As a State, we are prepared for any security challenge as the hardship in the Country is affecting our youths negatively leading to an increase in crime. “The Hausa Community in the State are peace-loving people. I want to encourage you people to continue to cooperate with the State government and provide us with useful information about criminal elements in the society, as we will respond promptly.” Obaseki charged, “I urge you all to call 112 or 739 in case of any emergency, and our men will promptly respond to the situation.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (right), with Chairman, Hausa Community in Edo State, Alhaji Badamasi Saleh, after a meeting at the Government House, in Benin City, on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Obaseki, InfraCorp, others seal N228bn deal for reconstruction of Benin-Asaba Expressway …partners Triple A Infrastructure, InfraCorp on a 25-year highway concession project …charges FG on concession of Benin-Auchi Road, others …we’re making history in infrastructure devt funding, says Edo gov The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, signed a N228bn agreement with the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp) and AAA Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (Triple A Infrastructure) for the reconstruction of the Benin-Asaba Expressway. The road project is to be funded by Triple Infrastructure and InfraCorp and supported by the Edo State Government as an equity investor under the 25-year Highway Development Management Initiative (HDMI) Concession to Africa Plus Partners. Signing the deal at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital, Obaseki who described the partnership as a great financing model for unlocking infrastructure development in the Country, urged for sustained partnership between States and the Federal Government. According to him, “Between 2000 and 2001 when a Committee was set up to redesign the Pension arrangement in Nigeria, the whole idea was to move into a contributory pension arrangement and begin a process of capital formation in the Country by getting workers in the Country to contribute their pension and these pensions will be invested in rebuilding the infrastructure of this Country. “That was the dream 30 years ago. I was on that Committee alongside Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. It was the Committee that gave birth to the pension funds that we have in the Country today. Those pension funds have in excess of N16 trillion under savings but no outlet to invest them on, but forced to invest in short-term papers issued by the Federal Government. “With transactions like this coming on stream, we will be creating opportunities for these pension funds to take our savings and put them into investments that will really develop Nigeria. This transaction for us is significant and we believe and hope that it's the first of several that will come.” On the economic benefits of the project, the governor noted, “The Benin-Asaba artery is very critical to the economy of Nigeria because it's that route that moves bulk of goods from the port in Lagos State, in the West, to the Eastern and South-South parts in Nigeria. You can imagine the cost that transporters and logistics managers have to bear and which has been translated into prices because of the bad nature of the roads.” He continued: “60km of this road is in Edo State and a large portion of this road starts from Ring Road through Abudu and Agbor to Asaba. The Edo State Government at some point in time had to invest money to do remedial work on that road because we were almost cut off. “I am glad that the Federal Government has now concessioned the road and not just to anybody but people who know what to do and have real money, not portfolio managers who sign contracts and sell the same. “We know the winners of these concessions very well and this transaction we believe in and it is very core to the economy of Edo State. As a State, we have no hesitation to also invest our money on that road. We have already started investing as we have spent almost N1 billion doing remedial work on the road. Now that we have been offered equity shares on this road, I want to commit that the Edo State Government will invest in this concession to fast track the process and any other concession of roads that goes through Edo State.” On ensuring the timely completion of the project, Obaseki stated, “Having started with this project, I want to implore you to fast track the process so that people will see that it is real and try to overcome the challenges caused by the rainy seasons.” He further noted, “I hope that the Federal Ministry of Works would now consider very urgently to terminate the Benin-Auchi road contract and put up the road for concession as the Edo State Government will support that initiative because that is the way to go. “Let us tell ourselves the truth, the Federal Government doesn’t have the kind of money required to rebuild the roads to the standard they should be and this is the way to go. The cost of this road, N228 billion, is more than a quarter of the entire budget of the Federal Ministry of Works. For us to continue the old model of expecting the Federal Ministry of Works to reconstruct our road is like a pipe dream.” “This is a call on the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently terminate all contracts of the Benin-Auchi road and put up that road quickly for concession like this and the Edo State Government will support it,” Obaseki charged. On his part, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Triple A Infrastructure Nigeria Limited Mr. Ike Chioke, said the agreement with the State Government is for the complete reconstruction of the Benin-Asaba Expressway under the HDMI Concession to Africa Plus Partners. Also, the Managing Director of Triple A Infrastructure, Niran Ajakaiye, while revealing further details of the partnership, reassured that the project will be world-class, noting that the road construction project will commence from Benin in Edo State, to Asaba in Delta State and terminate at the Second Niger Bridge. He stated, “What we are going to do is expand and upgrade the road to world-class and best standard road. In some locations, we are expanding to 10 lanes, and in others, eight lanes and so on. We are glad to have the Edo State Government partner with us on this project as an equity investor.” Ajakaiye added, “Once this road is done, it will be a world-class asset for the benefit of Edo and Delta States and will open up the corridor to the East and the West of the Country. Thanks for partnering with us.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_2109 L-R: Edo State Commissioner for Justice/Attorney General, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi; Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Engr. Obaseki orders reaccreditation of over 6,500 vigilante personnel, moves to boost security ...condemns attack on security operatives in Oja, vows prosecution of culprits ...charges citizens on effective use of State emergency numbers 112, 739 The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has ordered the reaccreditation of all operatives of the State’s Security Vigilante Network, numbering over 6,500, in a renewed effort to strengthen the State’s security architecture to combat crime and ensure the security of lives and property of residents. Obaseki gave the order during a security briefing at the Solomon Arase Command and Control Centre in Benin City, the Edo State capital, in the company of all security chiefs in the State. Reassuring the government’s commitment to the security of lives and property of Edo people, Obaseki said his government will continue to collaborate with security agencies to combat crime and criminality in the State. He said, “We are having this security briefing this morning to let the public know the measures that security agencies and Edo State Government are doing to secure lives and properties in Edo State. “We all are aware of the security challenges in the State this weekend, particularly in Edo North, where in the guise of burial some citizens resulted to arson and assault on security agencies in Oja Village. “Government can’t fold its hands and allow a breakdown of law and order in the State as appropriate actions will be taken and we have resolved to deal with what happened last Saturday. We will not accept a situation where citizens attack members of the security agencies, it’s not acceptable. As a government, we will deal with those involved in the incident.” On reaccreditation of the vigilante in the State, Obaseki said, “We heard some kidnappers took over a checkpoint and attacked some policemen on patrol, but none lost their lives in the incident and this has prompted the government to commence a total revamp of the vigilante structure. “Commencing today, only the vigilante personnel trained in the Nigerian Police Training School under the arrangement with the Edo State Government will be allowed to serve in Edo State. All vigilante groups and persons trained so far, about 6,500 men, are required to report to the Police Staff College where they received training for accreditation. The commander will be issuing instructions on the specific dates for reaccreditation.” He added, “After the reaccreditation, anybody or group acting as vigilantes without being trained by the Edo State Government will be dealt with like criminals. Come out for the exercise, as we want to re-identify them and put them in our security information system software that we have developed. It will help monitor and track their activities.” The governor, while reassuring sustained partnership with security agencies in the State, said, “The State will collaborate with Federal agencies, manning 24/7 hours Command and Control Center to ensure any incident, crime or breach of security is reported and all security agencies are in full alert to deal with such. “Citizens are encouraged to call the security emergency numbers 112 or 739. These numbers should be called in any time of distress or security breaches in Edo State.” Reassuring potential investors that the State is safe and secure for business, the governor noted, “We are introducing this security alert because we are aware and have had reports that some players in the political space naturally benefit from crisis situation, and we had reports that some are trying to bring in miscreants to man and support their political structure. “We are aware and Edo will be peaceful as my administration will deal with anybody who takes action to upset our security like a common criminal.” He added, “We are not waiting for incidents to happen before we respond. We are addressing issues ahead of time and want to inform the people that we now have a fully manned Command and Control Center as our security emergencies numbers are now active.” On his part, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye said “Edo State Government in collaboration with the Inspector General of Police is bringing in about 4,000 policemen into the State to ensure peace and development in the State.” Also, Commander 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Oduyebo said his men will continue to collaborate and support other sister security agencies to ensure the safety and security of the people.
