Obaseki dazzles investors at Belt, Roads forum, showcases Edo’s energy, petrochemical potential …Edo only subnational invited to global economic conference in China The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, took the global stage at the Belt and Road Investment Forum, in China, to showcase opportunities in Edo’s energy and petrochemical sectors, urging investors to leverage the opportunities provided by his government’s business-friendly reforms for trade and investment expansion. The governor, while giving his presentation in Fuzhou, China, said the State is packed with numerous opportunities for investors in the energy and petrochemical sector. The event was organized in Fuzhou, the largest city in Fujian Province where, coincidentally, the majority of the Chinese companies operating in Edo State are headquartered. Over 150 countries were in attendance with Edo State as the only sub-national government invited to speak at the 10th Anniversary of the Belt and Road Global Chambers of Commerce and Associations Conference. Obaseki said his administration will continue to strengthen the business relationship with the Chinese business community as Edo State is the third State in Nigeria after Lagos and Ogun with the largest number of Chinese companies. He noted that Edo State has a fast-growing reputation as the energy and petrochemical hub of Nigeria which is a big attraction to potential Chinese investors with prospects of affordable gas exploration. According to him, through a strategic partnership with the State Government, the Chinese business community in Edo State has grown steadily from a couple of companies to over 10 manufacturing steels, tiles, roofs, ceramics, and wood, including the largest glass company in West Africa. He further noted, “We have also been fortunate to reap the numerous benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative because we now have flourishing industrial development in Edo State. Thanks to the numerous industrial companies from China, led by Rongsheng Steel Companies which has significantly promoted industrial development in my State and created numerous jobs.” In addition to his plenary remarks at the opening ceremony of the Belt and Road Global Chambers of Commerce and Associations Conference, Governor Obaseki is scheduled to hold close-door meetings with the Fuzhou business community. Obaseki to lead Delta, Ondo, Ekiti to repurchase shares, reorganize BEDC to solve electricity crisis The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said plans are underway by Edo, Delta, Ekiti, and Ondo States, to buy back their shares from the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and reorganize the distribution company, providing a lasting solution to the electricity crisis in the affected States. Obaseki said electricity is key in driving development in any society, noting that his government has over the past seven years taken deliberate steps to encourage investments in the electricity sector to grow the State’s economy. Speaking to newsmen, Obaseki said he is in talks with the governors to buy back their shares in BEDC, ensuring Edo, Delta, Ekiti and Ondo States generate and distribute their own electricity. He said, “I am discussing with my brother, the governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and one of the things we talked about is the technicality of electricity. People think of seeing light, forgetting about the technicality involved and the last man on that channel that distributes the light is the distribution company. “I, Delta, Ekiti and Ondo governors, we have to approach Fidelity Bank and buy back the shares in BEDC. We would make an offer to buy that back to reorganize this Company to enable us to have an Edo, Delta, Ekiti and Ondo Distribution Company.” “Without electricity, we can’t go anywhere. We have our own local grid which we can distribute to various communities as without electricity we are not going anywhere. Electricity is needed for economic growth and development. Those who have cheaper gas will have cheaper electricity and it will lead to cheaper cost of manufacturing and production.” The governor continued: “We don’t need to wait for Abuja for money but rather have a mind shift to activate and galvanize what we have to create the money our people need. “Now we are all in darkness; any politics that keeps us in darkness is bad politics as everybody wants light no matter the political divide. No political party wants to stay in darkness, as the conversation started many months ago on purchasing the shares of BEDC, we can rapidly progress. “The original buyers of the shares of BEDC know what they did. They went bankrupt as the bank took those shares and tried to sell to others but we have signified our interest to buy to ensure the bank doesn't sell to the wrong people that will keep us in darkness again.” He added: “We will buy, let us sit down to discuss. We want to buy the share not because we want to run an electricity business or Company but want to sit at the table to supervise and decide on the expert that will do it right. Maybe it's time to take charge of our own territory. Benin electricity should give Benin light while that of Delta produces that of Delta State, it's possible.” |

With EdoBEST, other reforms, we’ve strengthened our education system, says Commissioner … ‘how we transparently utilized World Bank fund’ The Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Oviawe, has said the foresight and political will of the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, is responsible for the landmark transformation and advancement recorded in the education sector over the past seven years. Speaking to journalists in Benin City, the Commissioner said the education sector is one area where Governor Obaseki has outperformed his peers, adding that the development was made possible by the reforms introduced by the governor in 2017. According to her, “The governor had the vision and then had the political will. From the very beginning, he said to me, look, always tell the truth, always tell the people the truth, what is working, what is not working, and I have stood by that ethos. “He is somebody that has compassion for the people, for the downtrodden; he’s somebody that has the right kind of values as the leader.” She said the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST), launched on April 19, 2018, has continued to record huge success, improving learning outcomes across schools in the State. The Commissioner said, “So, when in 2021 the governor decided that we had done considerable work at the basic level and these children that are going through a reformed basic education system are coming up to junior and senior secondary and if those levels of education are still in decay, then all the efforts done on basic would have gone to waste. “June 2021, EdoBEST 2.0 was launched. The EdoBEST 2.0 is not just an acronym; it is an aspiration that Edo wants to be the best at every level of education, whether basic secondary, technical, vocational or tertiary.” She also disclosed that teachers’ skills and welfare were also prioritised, with an upward review of salaries to make them among the top earners in the country, with a backlog of salaries, promotions and allowances taken care of by the governor. According to her, “We’ve had remarkable successes, particularly at the secondary and TVET levels. We've been able to strengthen our education delivery system.” On funding of the EdoBEST programme, the Commissioner disclosed that EdoBEST was fully funded by the state government until 2022 when the World Bank heard of the programme’s success and offered some level of funding through its P4R Programme. She noted that the funding process was transparent as the funding was fully accounted for, with PwC employed by the World Bank to verify the process, adding, “That’s why I’m very comfortable and very confident in our records so far. Even though detractors may misrepresent it as being arrogant, it's not. We know where we were, we know what we met on the ground and we know how far we've come.” “I believe Edo is the first State that the World Bank was giving that facility. Typically, the World Bank does not fund States directly, they go through the federal government, but they were so confident in the abilities of Governor Obaseki, they were so impressed.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/with-edobest-other-reforms-weve-strengthened-our-education-system-says |

At the 3.65km road construction project, the governor said, “First, it’s the first infrastructure tax credit project that we are undertaking in Edo State and by any sub-national. It's only the national government that can be able to give tax credits for the purpose of infrastructure. “Wealthy taxpayers can use the tax to fund infrastructure projects such as the building of roads. When we saw that this was possible, we quickly issued an Executive Order. Commissioner for Finance, that law must be translated into law within the next 90 days so that we would have the infrastructural development and social investment tax credit law. Saro Africa took advantage; see what they have done with their tax credit, using it to build this road. “I thank you for believing in us and taking the risk of building this road. We encourage other Nigerians as well as sons and daughters of Edo State to come with their tax credit to get the benefits for Edo State to enable us build our infrastructure. It's part of the mix of financing of building infrastructure.” While inspecting the ethanol factory, Obaseki noted, “I am glad that so much progress has been made at the ethanol factory and the very vital and important sessions have been commissioned in phases. Five out of seven of the main facilities have been commissioned and it's only two left. The ones commissioned include cassava and water treatment, amongst others. “This is just a pre-commissioning and opening. We are here to see how much progress they have made and we are quite pleased with the success. We have no doubt that they will meet their estimated time for this project, which is the first quarter of next year. “This is important because it's better to imagine how much cassava will be procured from farms around. In addition to what we have to consume, we will be using more of our own products. “This project is one out of three other facilities. Edo should expect more jobs for youths and we hope we would have fulfilled most of our promises made in 2016 where our youths lost hope and wanted to travel but we have brought hope, job, and development.” He added, “We have to increase production domestically, because of the cost of importing products into this Country. The more we can produce, the less we depend on foreign exchange. We want to use what we have to boost production. Any Country that can't feed itself can't be called an independent nation.” During the commissioning of Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited, Governor Obaseki expressed delight at the progress made by his administration in attracting investment to Edo State. He stated, “I am glad and can't express how excited I am to formally cut the tape and walk through this facility. This is one of the first investments we encouraged investors to make way back in 2017. To show our commitment, the State Government and EDSOGPADEC co-invested in this project. Like most projects, it has its own challenges but due to the doggedness of the promoters, they were able to overcome the challenges. “This project is not only completed but we are looking at expanding by another 6,000 barrels per day. Our MoUs are now beginning to pay off, as people and the opposition who do not understand what MoUs mean are the ones who have a problem. We have to ensure that those that didn’t go to school govern us again. “We have to sign an understanding with the private sector and investors to give them assurances that the government will be there to support this project. That was why we signed this MoU and several other MoUs.” Obaseki added, “We are glad that the management of this Company and project have remained steadfast and use this opportunity to appeal to the Federal Government to align with what the State is doing as we have done our own bid from this project. “We have raised the money, given them the land, communities supported, now the project is ready but no road to bring feedstock. We can’t get crude oil which is required as feedstock into the project, meanwhile, we are a crude oil exporting country. “We are appealing to the Federal Government to support businesses and come to their aid to move this country forward. We will continue to support those businesses who have the raw materials to produce.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC-1 L-R: Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Obaseki is my friend despite political differences, says Oshiomhole …commends gov for Alaghodaro Summit, devt strides in Edo The senator representing Edo North Senatorial District and former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has said the incumbent governor of the State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, remains his friend despite their political and party differences. Oshiomhole spoke while giving his goodwill message at the 2023 Alaghodaro Summit, with the theme, “The Edo Story: Creating Shared Opportunities into the Future,” taking place in Benin City, the Edo State capital between November 8 and 12, 2023. The Alaghodaro Summit is organised yearly by the Edo State Government, in partnership with the private sector, to mark the anniversary of Governor Godwin Obaseki in office and showcase the progress being recorded in transforming the State into an investment haven. Oshiomhole, who thanked Obaseki for hosting the Alaghodaro Summit and inviting him, said he wants the world to know that Godwin Obaseki is his friend not enemy. He noted, “Being friends doesn’t mean we can’t disagree or have different opinions but we must treat ourselves with love and care. “Regardless of what people say, we should not give the impression that different options translate to war. People don’t need the tears of leaders joining them to lament but taking bold steps to solve the problem facing the people.” According to him, “Having the privilege as a governor, I have high regard for the Office of the Governor and for the governor himself. To have all the civilian governors elected in the State present here today speaks volumes. We definitely belong to different political parties but the sum total of those parties is not equal to Edo State. What this means to me is that we can politic differently but never have doubt about the shared commitment to the citizens of the State that should be the greatest in Nigeria. “The language of leaders matters to followers. What defines democracy is that of ideology, even if we share the same destination but the route to get there may differ, it should not be a matter of war. I thought the world should know that Godwin is my friend. It doesn’t matter; being friends does not mean we cannot debate or disagree but being friends means we treat ourselves with love and care and bring our followers together.” The senator added, “I am happy that with all the challenges in Nigeria, Nigeria is greater than the challenges.” Earlier, Obaseki said his government has, in the past seven years, reengineered Edo State for growth and development, and consciously laid a solid foundation for the State’s future. The governor in his address at the summit, noted that the government focused on six thematic pillars, including institutional reforms, economic revolution, social welfare, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability and arts and culture, noting that the bold reforms have positively impacted the lives of millions of Edo people, placing the State on the path of sustainable and accelerated growth and development. Two former governors of the State, John Odigie-Oyegun and Lucky Igbinedion, were also present at the event, with both of them taking to the podium at different time to commend Obaseki for his lofty achievements and visionary leadership, which they said has transformed the State and placed it on the part of greatness. Alaghodaro 2023: Obaseki tees off golf tourney, reels gains of reforms in sports, others The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, at the weekend, teed off the 2023 Alaghodaro Golf Tournament at the Benin Club Golf Course, Benin City, the Edo State capital, as part of activities lined up for this year’s Alaghodaro. The Alaghodaro Summit is organised annually by the Edo State Government, in partnership with the private sector, to mark the anniversary of Governor Godwin Obaseki in office and showcase the progress being recorded in transforming the State into an investment haven. In its seventh edition, the Summit is taking place in Benin City, between November 8 and 12, 2023, with the theme, “The Edo Story: Creating Shared Opportunities into the Future.” The governor was joined at the golf course by his Delta State counterpart, Sheriff Oborevwori, among other dignitaries. Obaseki, at the event, reeled out gains of his administration’s reforms in the sports sector, noting that the reforms have increased participation in sports in the State. He said, “Our administration has done much in sports, ensuring more citizens participate by not making sports an exclusive government agenda. We set up various associations and ensured that people participate in the governance of sports of their interest, with government support and acknowledgment which makes it a turning point for sports in the State. “We took out sports and created an inclusive governance arrangement for sports by creating a Sports Commission. The Sports Commission is the only government agency charged with sports as no other government institution has that mandate." Speaking on the achievements of the Alaghodaro Summit over the past seven years, Obaseki noted, “First, it marks the institutionalization of a process of planning and building consensus around issues, which has come to stay. It’s the basis for how the government should run. “The second part of this Alaghodaro for me is more like a vindication of the things we say we would do seven years ago and when you verify, there is nothing we talked about or proposed that we did not do. It's a process of confidence building. This has changed the narrative as we can have people in government who keep to their promises.” “Thirdly, it’s the very strong feedback from the citizens. The citizens have acknowledged today that we have made progress as a government and there is a consensus that really we should all support Alaghodaro because it’s on how we progress in our society and State. We have made remarkable progress in Edo.” On his part, the Delta State Governor, represented by his deputy, Monday Oyeme, noted, “I have learnt a lot in Edo State, and with the permission of His Excellency, I will import some of the things I learnt back to my State. “With this tournament, I have been convinced to become a golfer as I took my first shot today as a golfer and I will come back to the State and properly join the club. I am impressed and thank the governor of Edo State for giving us the opportunity to witness the celebration.” PHOTO CAPTION Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (3rd left); representative of the Delta State Governor and Deputy Governor, Monday Oyeme (4th right); Chairperson, Hospitality, Logistics, Protocol and Security sub-committee for 2023 Alaghodaro, Isoken Omo, with other participants during the 2023 Alaghodaro Golf Tournament at the Benin Club Golf Course in Benin City, on Saturday, November 11, 20

Alaghodaro 2023: At Edo Women Conference, Betsy Obaseki leads charge against marginalisation of women in politics …hails Gov Obaseki for giving more women opportunities in govt …salutes Edo women for role in realization of MEGA Agenda The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has challenged the continued marginalisation of women in politics in the country, particularly at the local government level, urging for more strengthened legislation to encourage women's participation in politics at all levels. Mrs. Betsy Obaseki made the call at the Edo Women Summit which was held at the Lawn Tennis Court of the Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, as part of activities to mark the 2023 Alaghodaro Summit. The conference brought together women from the 18 local government areas of Edo State, and other stakeholders to deliberate on issues concerning women and the girl-child in Edo State. Commending Edo women for their role in the realization of the Making Edo Great Again (MEGA) Agenda, the Edo First Lady noted, “This is the last Alaghodaro which is the reason why l said let us bring the women together to celebrate all of us and to thank every one of you for being great and progressive women. You have given the Governor such wonderful and marvelous support since we came on board. “I see faces that I first saw in 2015 before Governor Obaseki became Governor; when we were campaigning. You are still with us believing and refusing bribes from the opposition from time to time, election after election. You remain determined, standing strong with the Governor, believing in him, and staying with him to the end. Your reward would not only be in Heaven, rather you will begin to enjoy them here on earth.” Warning against the marginalization of women in politics, Mrs. Obaseki added, “I want them to remember that election is coming. It is women who make things happen; those of you in authority and in power who allow this thing to happen both in Government and in the party. Women cannot be disenfranchised and marginalized and you expect to be successful.” PHOTO CAPTION L-R: Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki; Wife of the Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Mrs. Barbra Agbebaku; Deputy Speaker, Hon. Alaghodaro has provided platform to chart path for Edo’s growth, devt in 7 years, says Ighodalo The Chairman Board of Trustees, Alaghodaro Economic Summit Ltd/Gte, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, has said that the yearly Alaghodaro Summit, has in the last seven years provided a platform for public and private sector participants in Edo State to chart the course for the State’s growth trajectory. The Summit is organised annually by the Edo State Government, in partnership with the private sector, to mark the anniversary of Governor Godwin Obaseki in office. It also showcases the progress being recorded in transforming the State into an investment haven. In its seventh edition, the Summit is taking place in Benin City, the Edo State capital, between November 8 and 12, 2023, with the theme, “The Edo Story: Creating Shared Opportunities into the Future.” Briefing journalists in Benin City, Ighodalo said insights from the summits in seven years have helped in shaping the government’s reforms and programmes, which have bettered the lives of the majority of Edo people and placed the State on the path to sustainable and accelerate growth and development. He said, “The Alaghodaro Summit came after 10 months of Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration in 2017. He created the platform where top government functionaries, officials, heads of MDAs, and Permanent Secretaries, among others can interact with the private sector, business people, NGOs, and civil society groups. It is primarily to ensure we exchange ideas on the way forward for Edo people. “Obaseki is very focused on the developmental strides that must be made to move Edo State from where it was to a more desirable height. He set up a board and incorporated it as a company limited by guarantee and separate it from the government itself so as to enable us to drive the process annually. “We get recommendations from every Alaghodaro, and provide same to government and the government looks at it and sees parts which key into the government’s policies and plans. These have helped to enhance the development of Edo State and move our people out of poverty through strong infrastructure and others.” Ighodalo further stated, “There are lot of work to be done but in the last seven years, there have been transformational changes in the State and many of the ideas have come from the outcomes of the Alaghodaro Summit. “This is the seventh summit and each summit has been an improvement on the last and the recommendations from each summit have always been submitted to the governor and the State EXCO as it has helped in a lot of work done in the State. “We are proud to have been able to serve on the board and contribute to the developmental thinking and policy formation and reform steps in the State.” Speaking on activities lined up for this year’s summit, the Board Chairman said, “Alaghodaro starts today, Wednesday with this press briefing which will be followed by the Edo Women Conference to enable the women to give their own views about governance in the State. “Thursday, November 9th, we will be showcasing some of the things done in the State, particularly physical and other infrastructure around the State. We are embarking on a tour for this purpose. “The Oba has given us his consent for tourists to come into the palace for a tour of the palace and all the places we have our artifacts. We will bring them to the Observer Newspaper to enable them to see the renovation that happened here and hopefully, the first edition will be rolled out on Thursday 9th, 2023. We have success stories to tell the world.” He continued: “On Friday, the 10th of November will be the main day of the Alaghodaro Summit as the event will start by 9 am. The event will end with a State dinner where all our past governors since the advent of democratic governance in Nigeria will be recognised for their contributions to the development of the State and will be given awards by Mr. Governor. “Saturday will be for the Golf Tournament. We will also be having an Edo Food and Fun Fair as we will be bringing producers from the three Senatorial Districts of the State to sell produce at prices lower than the market. These products will be cheaper and the market will be at Garrick Memorial, along Ekenwan Road. We are getting our people to participate by creating a carnival-like atmosphere. “Also on Saturday, we will have a massive concert where our citizens come back home to perform and showcase their talents to encourage other youths to showcase the creative aspect of Edo people. “The governor will commission the world-class studio built at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub as it will welcome anyone that wants to record world-standard jobs. It will attract world-class entertainers who will use the facilities.” Ighodalo added, “On Sunday, we will have a thanksgiving praise evening, starting from 4 pm where we all will come to give thanks to God for what he has done in our State.” PHOTO CAPTION L-R: Chairperson, Hospitality, Logistics, Protocol and Security sub-committee for 2023 Alaghodaro, Isoken Omo; Director, Board of Trustees, Alaghodaro Economic Summit Ltd/Gte, Oluwole Iyamu SAN; Chairman Board of Trustees, Alaghodaro Economic Summit Ltd/Gte, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and Chairperson, Local Organising Committee and Executive Secretary, Alaghodaro Economic Summit Limited/Gte, Eire Ifueko Alufohai, during a press conference in Benin City, on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

This is coming on the back of the $560m investment in the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP) by leading Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs) companies and other private investors in the programme. Through ESOPP, Edo is driving the development of the most expansive oil palm project in Africa, with over 60,000 hectares being cultivated as farm estates. The ESOPP is one of the outcomes of the annual Alaghodaro Summit, organised by the private sector in the State to mark the anniversary of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration. The summit this year kicked off on Wednesday, November 8, spanning Sunday, November 12, 2023. It provides opportunity for dialogue and feedback with various stakeholders in the drive to make Edo Nigeria’s leading investment haven. While signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sanora Foods in Government House, GRA, Benin City, Obaseki said his administration has continued to create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive. “As a government, we are very supportive of businesses who want to undertake investment in our State, particularly agro- based businesses. I urge you to be very diligent and manage the expansion project,” he said. Earlier, the President/CEO of Sanora Foods, Charles Eghobamien, said the company is investing $100 million in the state’s agriculture sector. The projects, according to him, include a 15,000 hectares oil palm, soya beans and other seed oil crops; an edible oil refinery, a 15,000 bottles per hour bottling line and an animal feed processing facility. He added: “Our initiative is a global expansion and we have secured finance for the expansion. We have two markets, Indonesia and Africa. “We have a target to create 10,000 direct and over 15,000 indirect jobs. We have other investment and development in terms of innovations, technical expertise and also through our social responsibility to impact the community.” |

Central govt growing weaker, must renegotiate with states for solutions to current economic woes - Obaseki The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that with the prevailing economic challenges, the Federal Government, which is growing weaker, must renegotiate with States for solutions to current economic challenges. The governor said this when he received 21 first-class graduates who were recently employed into the civil and public service in the State, at the Government House in Benin City, the State capital. Speaking to the new workers, the governor said: “The central government is becoming weaker as it doesn't have the resources to undertake the responsibility it ought to take according to the constitution and this will lead to a renegotiation. The system is not sustainable but yet I don’t see Nigeria disintegrating.” Obaseki continued: “We need to invite young people to deal with the situation and set the nation on the right path, threading on the path that aligns with global development. We have set ourselves as a State on the path of development. We have embraced paperless governance, connected all our local governments to fiber optic internet and built infrastructure. With young minds like yours, we will take the world. “It’s a new world for you, young minds and running away from Nigeria will not solve the problem and the reasons why people are running away can be addressed by people like you. All we need to do is to create the opportunity, preparing you for leadership or having leaders like you to help check these challenges.” |

Obaseki charges religious bodies on nation building, partners churches for cleaner Edo The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government will partner with religious bodies in the State to safeguard the environment, ensuring a cleaner and greener Edo. Obaseki said this when he received the leadership of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Lagos Street, Benin City, led by Venerable Moses Onovwuke, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, in Benin City. The governor, who reiterated the role of the church in nation-building, said it is the duty of every parishioner to contribute to the growth and development of the church, ensuring it is able to meet its expected role in society. Obaseki, while making the case for the upgrade of the church to enhance its aesthetic appeal and improve evangelism, stated that the state government will partner with the church to clean up the area which is gradually being taken over by scavengers. According to him, “It’s the duty of every parishioner to contribute their quota to the development of the Church they worship in to enable them to impact the communities they operate in. “St. Peter’s Anglican Church is the oldest in the Community. Therefore, our activities should not be restricted to what is being done in the Church but rather engage in other activities that will make the Church attractive to youths of this generation. “We should do all we ought to do to ensure that scavengers and those people selling metals don’t take over the Church. It's not as if the government is not concerned about such situations but this is the kind of appeal that the Church should make to the government to work with the Church to clean up the environment and that of the Church.” He added, “I appeal that the Church property should be upgraded and made more decent to encourage the youths to come into the Church premises to participate in activities. The Church should be made attractive and embark more on evangelism to woo more young people into the Church to take over from the leadership of the Church.” Earlier, Ven. Onovwuke expressed appreciation to Obaseki for his developmental strides across all sectors of the State, noting: “It’s our responsibility to visit the governor as a member of the Church. We thank you for the promise you have made to help us improve the facility in the Church.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (left) with Venerable Moses Onovwuke, during a courtesy visit, at the Government House in Benin City.

Obaseki begins palliative work on failed portions of FG roads, orders reconstruction of old Benin–Agbor Road …appeals to residents, commuters to remain calm The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has directed the reconstruction of the old Benin-Agbor Road. This is as the State Government commenced the palliative work on the failed portions of the Federal Government Benin-Agbor Road in Ikpoba/Okha Local Government Area of the State, and others to ameliorate the sufferings of motorists and other road users who ply the road. Obaseki, who inspected the ongoing palliative work being undertaken by the State Government, following the refusal of the Federal Government to attend to the road and other failed federal government roads across the State, lamented the poor condition of the road and the hardship imposed on the people due to the poor state of the roads. Pained by the outcry and pleadings of the residents and commuters, who trooped out in their numbers to welcome the governor and his entourage, Obaseki immediately directed the reconstruction of the old Benin-Agbor Road as a last-ditch effort by the State Government to end the sufferings of the people and commuters using the failed road. He ordered the Commissioner of Roads and Bridges, Engr. Ethan Uzamare, who was part of the inspection team, to immediately mobilise contractors to the site. Filled with joy and relief by the directive of the governor, the excited crowd commended and sang his praises for heeding their cries and pleas to end their sufferings and pains as a result of the hardship they go through daily commuting on the bad road. He said, “I know that you people have been suffering for more than three months now. Your markets have gone down and you cannot even get to your homes. I want to thank the youths for what you have been doing, and for maintaining order. Despite the suffering, you people have been peaceful. I want to thank you. The situation you have here today is beyond the state Government. This is a palliative work we are doing, it is remedial action and we have to go and look for money to do it so that we can ease the suffering. “This road as you know is not our road. It’s a Federal Road and the Federal Government has sold this road to somebody. They said they did a concession many years ago, about three years ago. So, they will not allow us to touch it. This one we are doing is by force because they know they cannot stop you and us but they are not going to refund us one kobo and we are not even going to worry asking them to refund us.” Obaseki added, “The permanent solution is, because this road is not our own and the Federal Government has refused to fix this road, we will now go and construct the old road which is ours. “So, we will start the reconstruction of the old road this dry season and as usual we will put up barricades. No trailer or truck will follow the road. If the federal government likes, let them not do this road. The minister is from the South East and this is the main road to the South East. So, if he doesn’t want his people to go for Christmas, he is on his own. We will look for a way to get to our homes. “Please continue to be law-abiding; we will work for you, don't worry. With what is going on in Abuja, they don't care about us but we will care for you. Please continue to be peaceful. We will do all we can to make sure this road is opened in the next two weeks,” he noted. On the governor’s entourage were members of the State Executive Council alongside other government functionaries. Present at the site was the leader of the Ikpoba/Okha Community, Ohen Iyeware Asenogwan Eghareva, with some of the youth leaders, market women, and residents.
