The governor, represented by the State Commissioner for Orientation and Communication, Chris Nehikhare, noted that the launch of the digital studio, transmission room and other state-of-the-art facilities within the EBS was part of the government’s efforts to revamp the state’s media assets and upgrade them to meet global standards. Obaseki said, “Today, we are commissioning a brand new digital studio for EBS. The studio equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities is just more than a technological advancement. In an era where information is vital, this studio will serve as a beacon of knowledge, creativity, and cultural expression. “With this new FM studio and the transmission room, we are not only enhancing our broadcast capacity but also empowering local voices. This platform will enable us to reach wider audiences, promote local talents, and ensure that every community has a voice in the conversation. “As we move forward, let's embrace the opportunity this studio presents and together we will strengthen our shared values, celebrate our diversity, and build an informed society.” He further, “The facility is very impressive and the staff have shown dedication to this project, and I sue for the sustenance of the projects as Government has invested so much because of the trust it has for the staff.” Obaseki added, “Our target is to make EBS a station to listen to and ensure we attract the best brains and hands across the country.” Earlier in her welcome address, the station’s Acting General Manager, Mrs. Rachel Osareimen Oboyo, commended the governor for the revamp and upgrade of the State’s broadcasting service, equipping and setting it up to compete favorably with other media outfits in Nigeria. She noted that the station was down some two years ago but the governor turned it around with world-class digital facilities ensuring it competes favourably in the media space. The General Manager stated, “It’s remarkable for EBS and the people of Edo State, as the new radio digital studio comes live. It has been a journey by the administration of His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki to see that the once-forgotten radio station of the State is alive and working. “It is no news that EBS radio and TV was down some two years ago but today, a digital transmitter and world-class radio equipment have been installed by the state government. I’m satisfied with my achievements in 8 years, Obaseki says …we’ve restored hope, empowered our youths for the future …gov, Mbah, Tambuwal commission Benin Technical College, Education hub, others …names College of Education Hub after Tayo Akpata …Obaseki led a people-centered govt, has transformed the State in eight years, say Mbah, Tambuwal The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said he is leaving office as the governor of the State very satisfied having undertaken bold reforms and projects that have transformed critical areas of the State, including education, healthcare, economy, infrastructure and job creation, among others, improving the livelihoods of the people and placing the State on the path of growth and economic prosperity. The governor said this on Tuesday, when he led his Enugu State counterpart, Dr Peter Mbah and the former governor of Sokoto State and Senator for Sokoto South Federal Constituency, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal and other dignitaries to commission various projects in the State. Some of the projects commissioned include the Benin Technical College and some internal roads within the college spanning over 12km as well as the Edo State Education Hub which houses the Ministry of Education, Directorate of Educational Quality and Accountability, Directorate of Higher Education, the State Examination Board, the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB), Library Board and Board of Technical and Vocational Education and Training, among others. Others at the event are the State Deputy Governor, Engr. Marvellous Godwins Omobayo; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Osaigbovo Iyoha, Commissioners and other members of the State’s Executive Council, traditional rulers, and education stakeholders, among others. At the Commissioning of the Benin Technical College, Obaseki said his government has restored hope of the people of the State, rebuilt Edo’s economy, and empowered and equipped young people in the State for the future. According to him, “This project is something I had to do because when I contested as governor of Edo State in 2016, we were facing existential threats. Our children didn't want to go to school but rather preferred to travel for greener pastures. The rate of irregular migration and human trafficking was very scary for me. At the time, over 30,000 young Edo boys and girls were in Libya trying to cross into Europe; we had the data. You can imagine how many died on their way there.” He continued: “While campaigning, I promised to restore hope and did what politicians don't normally do, promising to create over 200,000 jobs, and by grace we have surpassed that. “These jobs were not created by the government or the civil service as we focused on developing skills and training our young boys and girls in institutions like the Benin Technical School that just wanted hope and opportunity in life. “When I resumed office on November 12th, 2016, I visited the Secretariat and the next day, I was at the Benin Technical College. If I am to create 200,000 jobs, I need the institution to do this. But what I saw when I came here, I almost wept and I made a commitment that restoring this school and renovating it will be my priority.” Obaseki added, “I am glad this afternoon that a week to my exit in office, I can see a rebuilt technical college giving hope to thousands of young boys and girls. This is a greater joy and gift from God as I am leaving office very satisfied. I came, saw the State of the college and I did my best to revamp and rehabilitate it.” Obaseki at the commissioning of the education hub said the facility is a testament to his government’s revamp of the education sector. The governor also named the hub after foremost educationist and Commissioner for Education in the old Midwest State, Chief Tayo Akpata. He said, “Today, we are here to commission the Edo State Education Hub and this facility is like a summary of what we have done in Edo State. When we came, we met our educational system in disarray but today we are leaving a very organized education system. This hub represents that because this hub is everything education. “In this facility, we have created a hall of fame for our teachers. The whole reform in Edo’s education sector was anchored on the teacher. The EdoBEST programme succeeded because we focused on teachers who eventually teach the children. Teachers should be at the core of any education reform.” Commending teachers in the State for supporting the reforms of the education sector, Obaseki added, “As I leave, I want to thank all the teachers and educationists who laid the foundation of education in Edo State.” Describing the governor as a transformer, the Enugu State governor said Governor Obaseki has not only transformed Edo’s education sector but enhanced the learning abilities of Edo people. He noted, “I am deeply honored to be invited to commission this landmark project as it's a testament to the commitment of Governor Obaseki to transform the education sector. “The governor has had an outstanding term in office with various remarkable transformational projects which not only transformed the education sector but enhanced the learning abilities of the Edo people. “In the last eight years, the governor has been planting and it's our hope that the young ones and people of Edo State would reap from the bountiful harvest of your selfless work for Edo people. “It’s our hope that when the history of this State and Nigeria is rendered, posterity will not only be kind to you but will also preserve a noble seat for you for the great work you have done in Edo State.” On his part, Senator Tambuwal while celebrating the governor’s achievements in the last eight years, described Governor Obaseki as an achiever and pacesetter. He stated, “I am impressed with what I have just witnessed this afternoon through the philosophy of Governor Godwin Obaseki, and in no distant future Edo people will be missing you. “I must commend you for the initiative of the education hub. It's yet another first and has not been seen anywhere in Nigeria. I urge the people coming after you to continue with the good work as it’s not about politics but about governance and the people of Edo State and Nigeria.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R: Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; former governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, and the Executive Secretary, Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA), Dr Omosigho Izedonmwen, during the commissioning of the newly constructed Primary Healthcare Centre at the newly constructed Tayo Akpata Education Hub, in Iyaro, Benin City, on Tuesday, November 5th, 2024.

Obaseki: We’ve transformed Edo into a centre of creative excellence, leveraged advantage in arts, culture to drive tourism, economic prosperity ... You mustn’t let Edo go back to the dark days, gov charges youths ... leads Ihedioha, Donald Duke to unveil MOWAA Institute, commission Creative Hub Post Production Centre, Edo Film Project Residence …former govs celebrate Obaseki’s achievements in 8 years, say he has modernized vision of Edo’s founding fathers, built on legacies The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the investment in the State’s creative, arts and culture sectors over the last eight years, has transformed the State into a centre of excellence for the creative arts, repositioning the State as Africa’s arts, culture, and tourism hub. The governor said this when he led the former governor of Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, and other dignitaries and stakeholders to the official unveiling and preview of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) Institute and Campus, in Benin City, the Edo State capital. The guests also joined in the commissioning of the Edo Film Project Residence (Edonimose) and the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub Production Centre as well as the inspection of the Radisson Hotel Project, all within the Benin metropolis. Others at the governor’s entourage include the Edo State Deputy Governor, Marvellous Godwins Omobayo; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Osaigbovo Iyoha; candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo 2024 governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo and his wife, Ifeyinwa, and chairman of the Edo PDP, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, among others. Obaseki, addressing the diplomatic community, representatives of international museums and other stakeholders at the unveiling and preview of the MOWAA Campus, said the project which is part of the State’s cultural district, holds immense employment and investment potential for the State and will be a key driver of tourism and economic growth. According to him, “Eight years ago when I assumed office, we set out a plan which was very uncertain and difficult. As we laid down our plans on how to regenerate, restore and reform our State, we did what every other government would do. “First, we built roads, rebuilt our institutions, focused on our economy, dealt with our environment, and built infrastructure; that is what every other government does. But we did one thing that fewer governments would do in defining their agenda for development. “We brought culture and took art and culture as a priority for our renaissance as a State. If you look through West Africa, I don't think there are many places that can boast of our kind of heritage. What is key and fundamental for us is how we, through the centuries, built institutions. That is the representation of who we are but that knowledge has been lost because it was not written down.” He continued: “As a leader, our responsibility is to envision, visualize and create that vision of what is to be. We know that culture for us holds a significant place and helps us tell our stories better. “This project started about six years ago after conversation and discussion with the Benin Dialogue Group on how to preserve what we have and also how to interpret to the rest of the world our culture. “The reason why, as a government, we supported this project is because of the significant opportunities in job creation and the benefits of engaging our people in an asset like this, and what it represents. Eight years ago, I couldn't boast of assembling people like this but eight years after, the story has changed as people now want to come to Edo State to come and see.” He added, “I am sure you heard of the criticism that we brought down a hospital and built a museum. But in two days, we are going to be commissioning one of the biggest hospitals in South-South Nigeria in Benin City. We didn't pull down a hospital for a museum but rather, we built a museum and built a better hospital.” Obaseki at the launching of the Edo Film Project Residence, said: “Today, we are commissioning projects related to culture and creativity. We just finished unveiling MOWAA as one of our biggest advantages in the State is our culture and history. Our heritage is respected and celebrated around the world. When people come to Edo, they want to see the cultural representation of our culture and history in the city. “This led us into putting together our plans when I became governor in Edo and we brought culture as one of our thematic pillars of this administration that will drive our development. We have designed and created a cultural district for Edo. We are praying and hoping that successive administrations will complete it.” He added, “This facility is part of the cultural district. It's to provide support to artists to come into the cultural district for performances.” At the commissioning of the Edo State Film Post Production Center, Obaseki urged the people, especially youths to play an active role in safeguarding the progress made in the State in the last eight years, and not allow the State go back to the dark days of underdevelopment and retrogressiveness. According to him, “We have done several commissioning since last week and each of them have their roles in our society. Today is different as we are talking about the creativity of our people, building on the heritage that we have, which is across the spectrum of human activities. “MOWAA for instance is a repository where we store, preserve and conserve our past as it is an institute that helps us think about the future. Our cultural district is going to be a major attraction for the City. Edo is the home of culture and we are now creating the space to enable you to see the culture and heritage of the people when you come to Benin City.” Obaseki added, “This facility today is helping us complete the circle because we want Edo to be the hub of creativity in Nigeria. Whether we are talking about visual arts, creative arts, film, music, and design, they are all natural to us as the people are here. What the government is doing is creating the enabling environment and the infrastructure to support our people's creativity. “This facility which we are commissioning today is a facility that would help artists produce and finish their production as this one is to help them edit their production. It's an end-to-end service that we are providing for our creatives in Benin City, Nigeria as they don't need to go abroad to complete their production. Whatever they intend to produce, they produce here in Edo State using this facility.” Appreciating the governor for his impactful projects across various sectors of the State’s economy over the last eight years, Ihedioha and Donald Duke, described the governor as a transformer who has prioritized the welfare and wellbeing of his people. Ihedioha noted, “Your Excellency, you have done well in the last 8 years. You have led your people well. In terms of power, you have led the country. Today, Edo generates more power than any State in the federation. In the area of education, you have shone like a million stars. In the area of arts, culture and tourism which is synonymous with Edo State, you have shone like a true son of the soil. “In the area of health, we appreciate the quality of health delivery to your people and you have created wealth for your people. Edo is one of the most industrialized States in Nigeria by virtue of the investments you attracted as the governor of Edo State. “You have made Edo State a tourist destination as I joined you today to unveil the MOWAA Projects which is a classic one and you will be remembered in years to come. You said you don't want the vision of the late Samuel Ogbemudia to die but you have immortalized his vision.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_1 L-R: Edo State Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi; former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke; former Governor Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Engr. Obaseki commissions Airport Road Parks and Gardens, names recreation centre after Prestige Hotel The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, commissioned the Benin Airport Park and Garden, one of nine model parks and gardens developed by his government to bring about functional recreational activities for residents and visitors within the Benin metropolis. The governor was joined by the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki; the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory senatorial district, Senator Ireti Kingibe; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Osaigbovo Iyoha; Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Arc. Joshua Omokhodion; Chief Medical Director of Benin Military Hospital, Brigadier General PO Aborime, and Managing Director, Prestige Hotel, Mr. Felix Edosomwan, among others. Obaseki, who urged the community and other residents on the protection and security of the centre and other government projects, named the centre the Prestige Gardens and Park, after the iconic Prestige Hotel, Benin City. He said, “This is part of the plan of making Edo great again as Benin City was a very planned city. In our villages and communities, we all have villages and town squares where people relax and have community meetings and social interaction. This place is created to ensure we meet and commune together. “Edo State is used to things of beauty and we have done our best to maintain it. It creates community bonding. We are here to change things and not here to follow the old order. Edo State must now have open areas where people can come relax and enjoy themselves.” Obaseki added, “We have set up an agency called the Parks and Garden Agency and urge Edo people to inform us if they see any free space so we can take it over and beautify it like this. We have started with nine like these.” According to him, “We have two in Gapiona and I heard that they are ready, and soon we will go and commission it. We have another one at Iyioba where we recovered some land after constructing Textile Mill Road. We have another one at Urora. Anywhere we have constructed a drainage system, we have constructed a park because of the water body.” He continued: “We pray that future governments will see it as beautiful and something that we need to do and construct more parks. “We already have the structure and agency to help us with things like this as we continue to develop more. This park is for the use of members of the public. It's your property as you will join the government to keep it safe and clean. It will be easier to maintain and sustain when we work together.” Obaseki further charged, “We urge the Nigerian Army to protect it for us. We also have the owner of Prestige Hotel to help us maintain this park. And because we see you as a co-owner who will help us maintain the park, we will name it Prestige Park and are leaving it in your care as you continue to improve on what we have done. “When we thought of this public space and how to create, manage and maintain it, we created a revenue model to sustain it. All the billboards around here are revenue dedicated to the management of the park and providing the things needed for the park. The military has agreed to secure that park while prestige hotel will support the sustenance of the park.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R: Managing Director, Prestige Hotel, Mr. Felix Edosomwan; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Arc. Obaseki launches Edo Digital Policy, commissions Nigeria’s first State-owned data centre in Benin …says we’ve digitally revolutionized Edo, moved State into super digital highway The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said reforms by his administration in the digital and technology space over the last eight years have revolutionized the State, launching the State and its people into the super digital highway. Obaseki spoke at the launch of the Edo State Digital Policy and the Edo Data Centre, which is the first data centre owned by a State in Nigeria. Noting that the reforms have repositioned Edo as a leading state in digital inclusion in Nigeria, Obaseki noted that the government is leveraging technology as a catalyst for socio-economic development and inclusive growth. He said, “I welcome you to the only data center owned by a State in Nigeria. This event is significant because we have started a revolution in Edo State, a digital revolution. We are rounding up with a policy statement that will guide this revolution into the future. “The population of Edo is skilled towards the youths as they are born in a digital age. The future is digital. It will be difficult to navigate the world today without technology. If you want to develop and grow rapidly, you must begin to think of how to use technology. “The pace of the advancement of technology in the world today is scary. So, just imagine those who have not started yet; I don't think they can live in the future world. In Edo, we have always been ahead in our history. We have been a knowledgeable people as we interacted at a global level over 500 years ago on our own level. “To catch up, we had to do something else and different. That was why from the beginning it was clear to us that we had to introduce technology and make sure that we begin to retrain our young ones, the youths, to own this digital world and the confidence in it.” Obaseki added, “We have moved Edo into the digital superhighway and to operate on that superhighway, they must know the rules and must be guided by certain rules and practices. That is what we are doing today and incorporating in this policy document. This will enable everybody to understand the shape of this high way and what they need to do on this high way.” The governor continued: “I had the privilege of working with young people in Edo State and working together, we set up EdoJobs and the Edo Innovate Hub as these have helped our young people and till date, over 50,000 young men and women have benefited from various training and programmes from Edo Innovate. We have been lucky to build a digital ecosystem which has grown rapidly. “Years ago, as the Chairman of the State’s Economy Team, we set up the ICTA but we struggled all through but we kept it alive, and set up the law governing it. The agency is principally responsible for providing technology for the government. “I am proud today of what we have done in Edo State which is all-encompassing as no aspect of government in Edo State that has not been digitized or in the process of digitization. All Government jobs have been digitized, and it is not difficult to operate in Edo as files can't miss again.” According to him, “Technology has made it easy for our children to learn in school through the EdoBEST programme. We have over 400,000 children in our public schools. We have data in all our public schools, teachers, parents and ward of our pupils. “You can go to any of our primary healthcare centers today without seeing your records, especially if you have registered and with our health insurance. Security, healthcare, agriculture, education and other areas, we have introduced technology. “This policy will help you to understand how to adopt technology in the services you are providing and enhance your earnings. “As a State we are proud that we have the largest and longest fiber optic connection and network in Nigeria. There is no local government headquarter in Edo that is not connected with fibers as we are just closing out a fiber connection to over 60 primary healthcare centers and the implication is that we can get doctors, sitting in America and consulting with a doctor here in Nigeria.” On the launch of the data center, Obaseki said, “Our data center is like a warehouse where we store all the data for people and government and it's important for us as a State as the center can support as many businesses in Edo State and in the South-South as possible.” He added, “Security is the fear of people, especially about securing cyberspace and we have a policy that shows us and tells us how to sustain our digital space. Edo State is now digital and will remain digital. We have come of age and are the most digital State in Nigeria and are ready to assist other States to get to where we are today.” Earlier, in his welcome address, the Edo Commissioner for Digital economy, Science and Technology, Ifaluyi-Isibor, who noted that Edo is the first State to develop a Digital Policy in Nigeria, commended the governor for his efforts at digitalizing Edo’s economy. According to him, “We have recorded many firsts in terms of digital technology, as the State is the first in Nigeria to develop a digital policy. In today's world, technology has taken all aspects of our lives. “Our goal as a State is to create an environment where digital technology takes the lead as this Edo digital policy will promote purposeful government. Edo State will continue to take the lead while others follow.” In her remarks, Dr. Osasuyi Dirisu, the Executive Director of Policy Innovation Centre of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), while commending the foresight and visionary leadership of Governor Obaseki, said the policy will strengthen government digital capabilities and programmes through an enabling environment and advocacy for inclusive socioeconomic development in the State. While commissioning the Data Center, the Chief Executive Officer of Anchor Telecoms and President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Mr. Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere, said the world-class facility will help boost innovation and facilitate the digital economy drive of the State Government. Obaseki: We’ve improved land administration, sanitized built sector to drive progress, prosperity in Edo …Ikimi, Obaseki, others commission built environment hub ...Gov shares story of how his land with C-of-O was reallocated, resold by landgrabbers …Edo immortalizes late Daniel Omoigui, names GIS building after Nigeria’s first Surveyor General The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and chieftain of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), High Chief Tom Ikimi, among other dignitaries, on Thursday, commissioned the Edo Built Environment Hub, which houses the Ministry of Physical Planning, Housing, Urban and Regional Development; Edo Geographic Information Service (EdoGIS); the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, and the Edo State Public Building and Maintenance Agency. Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Godwin Obaseki, said his government has over the last eight years taken deliberate steps to improve land administration and sanitized the built environment sector to sustain investors' confidence, as part of efforts to drive sustainable growth, progress, prosperity in the State. Other dignitaries at the event include the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; the Candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2024 Governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo; his deputy governorship candidate, Osarodion Ogie; Chairman of the Edo PDP, Anthony Aziegbemi, and the Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, among others. Obaseki, who shared the story of how his land with a Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) was reallocated and resold by land grabbers, said his government has sanitised the built environment sector and guaranteed security of lives and property, repositioning the State as one of the best places to live and do business in the Country. As part of the commissioning, the governor immortalized the late Daniel Omoigui, Nigeria’s first Surveyor General, naming the EdoGIS building after the late Surveyor General from Edo State. He said, “I had the privilege of serving as head of the economic team before becoming governor and just looking at Benin City, Edo State, the biggest value and asset that we have is our location and therefore our land in Edo State is premium. “Location is everything when it comes to land and real estate. Because of the location of Edo State, the land is premium and there’s no way to realize the value and benefit of our land if it's not well organized. Edo is one of the richest States in this country in terms of land resources. “Our land transverses every aspect; we have swamp, rainforest and savanna. We have minerals, large reserves of gas but all of these need to be mapped and because when information is not available, it's as good as having dead assets.” Obaseki continued: “It was clear before I became governor that one of the first things we have to do is to start the process of getting the information of our land resources. One of the first processes we did was to make contact with one of the companies to help us provide and source the information on what we need on our land assets. “We have always had a planned environment and by the time I became governor, it was another story. Our land administration process had collapsed. Even as a governor, I had a C-of-O on a property at Iyekogba and yet that property was resold and the new owner built on it. It's terrible and that was the situation we met; we can’t develop in this manner. “The process of developing a house was hijacked by CDAs as you have to settle them in all fronts before you complete your house as if they are building control. Land is the greatest asset anybody can have and the moment you administer the land well; things move on well. “We have provided security of lives and properties and Edo is now a place to live and do business as we have taken a deliberate step with sustained efforts, planning and hard work. The transformation in Edo State is as a result of proper planning.” On development of various hubs across the State, the governor said, “The idea of the hub is cheaper, easier, and more efficient when government agencies are located and situated in one place. We have acquired more lands for the built environment sector as we have one in the right and the other in the left and this would amount to about nine hectares of land. All the agencies that will need to do something about the built space will be located here.” On immortalization of Nigeria's first Surveyor-General of the Federation, Daniel Omoigui, the governor stated, “We have an outstanding Edo legend who is not here with us but when he passed on few years ago, during his funeral service, I made a promise that being the first Surveyor General of the Federation of the Edo extraction, that we were going to honour him. “Today as part of Commissioning, we are going to place a plaque to name this GIS Complex as Surveyor Daniel Omoigui Building. He is represented here by members of his family. He is a great man; read up on him and see the fight he fought for the creation and boundary adjustment for Edo State.” While commissioning the building, High Chief Tom Ikimi, commended the governor for his developmental strides across various sectors of the State, noting that the project will enhance coordination and further reposition the State as a model for sustainable urban development. Obaseki, Zamfara gov, Dauda Lawal, others commission newly reconstructed Edo College of Health Sciences, Technology ...we’ve revamped our health institutions, built a resilient system to cater for Edo people ...Obaseki has rekindled hope in Edo, Nigeria, says Zamfara gov The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his Zamfara State counterpart, Dr. Dauda Lawal, and other dignitaries, on Wednesday commissioned the Edo College of Health Sciences and Technology (EdoCOHEST), which has been reconstructed and upgraded to meet global standards. Obaseki at the 3-in-1 event, including the commissioning, matriculation and 60th anniversary of the institution said his government in the last eight years has revamped all healthcare institutions and built a resilient system to cater for the health care needs of Edo people. Others at the event include the Edo State Deputy Governor, Marvellous Godwins Omobayo; candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo 2024 governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo and chairman of the Edo PDP, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, among others. Governor Obaseki, who called for support from all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of all programmes and projects embarked on by his government to better the lives of the people, said the revamping of institutions is part of his administration's commitment to build on the legacy of the State's founding fathers. Obaseki said, “60 years ago, our founding fathers, having broken away from the Western Region came and founded the Mid-West Region and decided that an institution like this was very important to our healthcare system and therefore founded this school 60 years ago. “For some accidents of history, people came along the line and never appreciated an institution like this. But COVID-19 opened my eyes to the State of healthcare in Edo State and Nigeria. Our inability to respond to COVID-19 scared me of that pandemic. “COVID-19 caged everybody both rich and poor and the lessons of COVID-19 for me is that we should be able to build our own. We must build our healthcare system. “Healthcare is not just the hospital or infrastructure you see but the most important thing in the healthcare system are the people who must be able to deliver services to you. “COVID-19 opened my eyes. The school of nursing closed down, no accreditation, school of health technology was closed down too. How are we therefore employing people working in our hospital? Obaseki continued, “I brought down Central Hospital and have no regret as we now have 10 primary healthcare centers replacing that and serving the people well now. Go and see what we have done with Oredo Primary Healthcare Center, Amagba, Evbuotubu and other places we are building centres. “Nigeria has more than 25,000 political wards, and the policy is that there must be one PHCs in every ward so that the sick doesn’t need to travel far to get medical care. We have almost 200 wards in Edo. If you need 10 people in each PHC, how many workers would we require. That's about 2,000. Where do we train them? “In Nigeria, we need more than 250,000 healthcare workers from our PHC system. “To develop any system, the focus must be on the middle level manpower and it's important to train every other worker in the chain to enable us get quality healthcare. “An effective primary healthcare center helps detect diseases and safe lives because the disease is treated entirely and will not lead you seeking medical care abroad. “These students here in this school will be trained to the highest quality because the facilities on this campus is better than the facilities in many universities in Nigeria. Just go round and see for yourself. “I was here about two days ago to come and inspect the facilities here and saw young students coming into the institution for their academic pursuit, I was almost emotional.” He continued: “In 2016, when I came in as governor, these young people did not have this opportunity but rather were victims of trafficking and illegal migration and were turned into slaves. The young ones had no hope as nobody cared for them as it was always about politics. When I look around and see the opportunities we are creating for young people, I have no regrets. If there is a need to fight, I will continue to fight for the interest and the betterment of the young people of Edo State.” On the facilities in the institution, the governor noted, “This campus has free Internet, 24/7 electricity from Ossiomo Power and we have ensured that the selection process is based on merit. “This project was started a year ago. I wish we had money, we would have started it earlier. People make things happen, not money alone. “We hired the management of the institution about 6 months ago and they have worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth takeoff of the programme. We are thinking about exchange programme with other institutions like this.” On his part, the Zamfara State Governor who commended Obaseki for prioritizing the needs of the people, noting that Governor Obaseki has rekindled hope in Edo State and Nigeria. He said, “It’s truly a privilege and honour to be here at the instance of my brother and the good people of Edo State to share in this milestone in the life of the Edo college of Health Sciences and Technology, especially of the matriculating Students. “As we gather here, I am reminded of the transformative power of vision and determination under the capable and visionary leadership of His Excellency, my brother, Governor Obaseki who have rekindled hope in Edo State that with a clear vision, excellence is possible despite all odds. “Listening to the details of this whole project, I commend my brother for this shining example of what can be achieved when resilience, vision, and dedication comes together. As I looked at the students being matriculated here today, I will say to you that you are the symbol of our hope and pride. “You represent the abundant potential that exists in Edo State and in our Country in general. Don't limit yourself, study and excel. Protect this investment for yourself and future generations of students yet to come.” The governor added, “Aside from producing health professionals, I pray that this institution would be a bridge to connect people, create jobs and foster economic growth for both within and outside Edo State and stand as a testament to unlock talents.” Earlier in his welcome address, the Provost of the Institution, Dr. Moyo, thanked Governor Obaseki for investing in the institution which has now become one of the best schools of health sciences in Nigeria. According to him, “I thank the Executive Governor of Edo State for bringing this College Project to a positive reality. If not you, Your Excellency, who could have remembered us. For what you have done, the management and staff of this College will ever remain grateful to you.” To the matriculating students, he charged, “Our vision is to make the Edo State College of Health Science and Technology (EDOCOHEST) the best, and the top 3 (three) colleges of health sciences and technology in Nigeria, and this will be reflected in you as our students. “The future holds many challenges and success for all of you. Each of you will have your own unique opportunities to grow; and I am therefore confident that you will rise to every occasion.” As part of the event, Governor Obaseki on behalf of the college, presented an award of excellence to Governor Dauda Lawal for visionary leadership and support for excellence. Other awardees are Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Osaigbovo Iyoha; Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Stanley Ehiarhimwian and Managing Director of Public Building and Maintenance, Engr Austin Osakue. Obaseki: We’ve laid foundation for an Edo that ranks among leading sub-nationals in Africa …says Nigeria must prioritize agric devt to turn around economic fortunes …commissions Edo Agric Hub The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government, over the last eight years, focused on laying the foundation for a progressive and prosperous State that ranks among the leading sub-nationals on the African continent. Obaseki who spoke at the commissioning of the Edo Agriculture Hub, on Airport Road, Benin City, said the project is part of efforts to revitalize agriculture to boost the State’s economy, tackle food security, and drive sustainable development in the State. The governor was joined at the commissioning by his deputy, Marvellous Godwins Omobayo; former governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Osaigbovo Iyoha; candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo 2024 governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo and chairman of the Edo PDP, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, among others. Obaseki, who noted that his government has de-risked agriculture and is supporting farmers to boost agricultural development, said that if the nation must turn around its economic fortunes, the country must prioritise investment in agriculture and development of the sector. He said, “I want to thank the former governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, as we have achieved a lot because we continued with some of his successes. “We commissioned the Edo State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Iguoriakhi, and through that project laid a solid foundation for a great Edo State and a State that is currently ranked amongst the leading countries in Africa. “We are here to continue with the consolidation process of our economy. When you talk about the economy of Edo State and Nigeria, it's based on agriculture as it is ranked as one of the largest contributors to our Gross Domestic Product (GDP). “If we are going to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria and Edo State, the priority must be agriculture. It's more important today than it was in our history as we took food security for granted. We never thought that there would be a day when many people would not be able to eat one meal a day. This is what is confronting us in the country today.” Obaseki continued: “In Edo State, we will show the way and not follow anybody. Part of what we are doing here today is part of the process to revitalize agriculture in the real sense of the world. Our biggest asset in Edo State is land. “If we must feed the population of Edo State, we have to begin to rethink how we utilize our land in Edo State to provide food for our people. In the past, we imported food but this time around, we don't have such money. “Our challenge as a State is how to produce our own food. We must produce all we eat and produce in abundance so that we can sell some for those that don't have our kind of soil; the thinking will start from the government.” According to him, “We have to emphasize that food production is important and must have food security to be secured as a country. We can’t continue to run a country while depending on others outside to feed us. How will you explain that a country like Nigeria spends over $500 million a year to import dairy products? We can rare our own cattle and build our dairy industry but the government needs to provide leadership. “Edo State Government is providing that leadership and thinking as we have created a conducive environment for it to happen. This hub was due to the thinking. “We decided to bring everybody that has to do with food production into one place, leading to the birthing of this agricultural hub that we are commissioning today.” On facilities in the hub, Obaseki stated, “Everything relating to food production and cultivation is located here. We have 15 agencies and programmes located at the Edo State Agricultural Hub. We have enough space to expand and accommodate more programmes in the next 10 years. “Key to agriculture is training and we have built a lot of training capacity and capabilities here in this hub. We have a lot of training rooms, library, and meeting rooms where farmers can come to get information.” Earlier, Mr. Donatus Imaghodor, the Chairman of Edo State Cassava Growers Association, in his address, said the establishment of the hub will not only facilitate access to modern farming techniques, innovative processing methods, and essential resources that can help us overcome challenges in the agricultural sector but will ensure Edo State is rightly positioned as a food Hub in Nigeria. According to him, “It is both an honor and a privilege to stand before you today as we witness the commissioning of this significant Agriculture Hub in Edo State. This facility represents a remarkable step forward in the Edo State Government's commitment to advancing agricultural practices, boosting local economies, and enhancing food security for our communities. “As the Chairman of the Nigerian Cassava Growers Association, I am particularly excited about the potential this hub holds for cassava production and processing. Cassava is not only a staple food for many but also raw materials for industrial users and a vital cash crop that has the power to transform the livelihoods of our farmers. “The establishment of this hub will not only facilitate access to modern farming techniques, innovative processing methods, and essential resources that can help us overcome challenges in the agricultural sector but will ensure Edo State is rightly positioned as a food Hub in Nigeria. It is a testament to the Government’s effort to improve productivity, increase income, and ensure sustainability in agriculture.” Commending the governor for his foresight, he charged, “Let us seize this moment to work collectively towards a more prosperous and resilient agricultural sector in Edo State. I encourage all stakeholders to engage actively with this hub and take full advantage of the resources it offers.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R: Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Rebirth, relaunch of Nigerian Observer signposts our vision to make Edo a formidable media hub, says Obaseki ...Tony Iredia, John Momoh, Nduka Obaigbena, Sunny Irabor, Nosa Igiebor, others inducted into Nigerian Observer Hall of Fame The Edo State State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the rebirth and relaunch of the State’s newspaper, Nigerian Observer, is a testament to his government’s vision to make Edo State a formidable media hub. Obaseki who spoke at the commissioning of the Nigerian Observer New Office Building and Edo Printing Centre, said the state's newspaper has now been rebranded and upgraded to meet global standards. During the event, veteran journalists, including Tony Iredia, John Momoh, Nduka Obaigbena, Sunny Irabor, Nosa Igiebor, Frank Aigbogun and Ebenezer Abiodun Aloba, a founding staff of the Nigerian Observer, were recognised and inducted into the Nigerian Observer Hall of Fame in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the development of the nation’s media industry. Other guests at the event include the Edo State Deputy Governor, Marvellous Godwins Omobayo; former governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion; Candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party in Edo 2024 governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo and chairman of the PDP, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi. According to Obaseki, “I welcome you to the commissioning of the rebranded and rebuilt Edo press center. What we have tried to do here is to upgrade the premises where the Nigerian Observer was birthed 60 years ago to now become a media center in Benin City. “The vision of our founding fathers, including General Samuel Ogbemudia 55 years ago brought about perhaps one of the most advanced printing and media houses in Nigeria to be set up in Edo State. “When we came into this premises to work on this press center, the quality of the printing machines we saw here were top at that time. This shows the vision of our leaders, as we are building on the back of people who ruled the State before we came in.” Obaseki added, “The commissioning of this edifice is a testament to how far we have come as a people and also signals as a sign post of our vision to make Edo State a formidable media hub.” The governor continued: “The media business in Nigeria today is largely dominated by Edo people and it's not a coincidence as you can see from the award of the Observer Hall of Fame given here today. “The Nigerian Observer is a nurturing ground. Alongside this new building, we have established the Edo press center which is equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities for all printing and publishing needs. We have done this to diversify the risk in the newspaper business and hope that with the state-of-the-art facilities here, it will augment revenue here at the Observer.” Obaseki further noted, “We have maximized the use of this space by also locating the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub which offers opportunities to the State's creative economy and enhances the talent of the young population. All of these activities, the press center, the publishing house, and the creative hub were all crafted from the old premises of the Nigerian Observer which published the Bendel State-owned newspaper in 1968. “Some of the notable journalists we have hosted today came from the stable of the Nigerian Observer Newspaper after surviving several shutdowns due to economic and political reasons and today, the newspaper continues publication. “Looking back at the newspapers set up at the time, the Observer Newspaper is perhaps one of the few newspapers that may be surviving while others have gone into extinction. “We are here for a simple ceremony. First to commission the Nigerian Observer building which now houses the newspaper, and also the printing presses (three printing presses) with state-of-the-art facilities which we believe will be very viable as these facilities are not common in this part of the world. We hope that it will provide jobs and expertise in the printing industry to lots of young Edo people.” According to him, “The revamp exercise kicked off in 2022 after COVID-19 which involved the construction of new work spaces, facilities for printing and a complete redesign of the Observer newspaper. We are very aware that technology today plays a very vital role in the newspaper industry. “Before the press was completed, we launched the online version of the Nigerian Observer and every day the online version is published. I encourage all of us present to take advantage of the newspaper as it gives you all the information about the State. “I also want to let the printing industry in the south region know that we have a GOSS printing machine in Edo State and it can print books and newspapers. We also have a speed printing machine.” Earlier, Chris Osa Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, who chronicled the history of the Nigerian Observer, noted that “Irrespective of various upheavals the world media has gone through in recent time, we can say the Nigerian Observer has no doubt come of age in the reporting, printing, publishing and general journalistic business in Nigeria, considering the fact that most state-owned newspapers are no more in business.” According to him, “The Nigerian Observer, one of the legacy projects of Late Brigadier General, Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, Military Governor of Midwest State and Bendel State, is a response to the genuine demands of a people who increasingly began to feel that they need some outlet for the articulation of their own ideals with emphasis to inform, educate and entertain.” Describing the newspaper as an essential service sector of the communication industry in Edo State, the Commissioner said the state government embarked on the overhaul of the newspaper and publishing outfit to ensure that it takes back its pride of place in the society. He added, “The Nigerian Observer complex you stand today boasts of three new printing presses. With installed capacity of about 32,000 newspaper pages an hour, the same machine also prints books of all forms and sizes; Speed master machine for carrier bags and gifts, and a flex printing machine, all of the latest technology. The plan of the government is to make the Nigerian Observer a printing hub for the South South states in particular and the Nigerian nation in general.” *PHOTO CAPTION* DSC_01 Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Hon. Obaseki: We've improved lives of Edo people, restored hope of our youths in 8 years …commissions Edo College of Agric, says institution'll produce best, largest agric extension workers in Nigeria The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government in the last eight years focused on improving the lives of Edo people, creating opportunities and restoring the hope of the youths of the State. Obaseki said this at the commissioning of the Edo State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Iguoriakhi, in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of the State. He was joined by former governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion; candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for 2024 governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo; the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Marvelous Godwins Omobayo; Chief of Staff, Osaigbovo Iyoha; Head of service (HOS), Anthony Okungbowa, among others. According to the governor, “In the last 8 years, we have focused on our people, particularly our young people. We had to give them hope because when we came in 2016, our young people wanted to move to other countries and anywhere else except Edo State. At one time in 2017, we had over 30,000 boys and girls in Libya, and many of them died in search of a better life. “If we have institutions like this that can train them and give them skills, opportunities, and hope, many of them would have been alive.” He continued: “We made a vow to ourselves and God that we would not leave it the way we met it. We have made our mark and done our best. As we wind up, we pray that those that would come after us will continue to build upon what we have done and not take us back. “The focus of our administration was to create hope and opportunities for our people and to use our resources to develop the State. Our land across the State is fertile and blessed. “You can't have an impact in agriculture if the government doesn't create meaningful environments for agriculture and investors can’t spend resources building infrastructure to their farms because it is government’s responsibility. “As a government, we decided to rebuild all our institutions. From the School of Agriculture, School of Nursing, School of Health Technology, and College of Education, among others. This was to enable us help the younger ones with skills and set them up for the future so that they can live meaningful life.” On the facilities at the institution, Obaseki said, “We have built facilities that can train up to 1,000 students in different specialization. The infrastructure is world-class and can’t be compared to that of any University in Nigeria. “Our purpose is not to produce another set of people with certificates. We have too many people with certificates without skills. The purpose is to give opportunities and skills to anyone who has the opportunity of coming into this institution. You can’t come into this institution and leave without skills in agriculture. “We have assembled investors, using oil palm as a point of contact with other players in the agricultural space to put in resources in the school. It's not a political institution as 50 per cent of the governing council of the school is made up of people practicing in the agriculture industry. Just tell us the program you want and we will train the people so that you can employ them.” The governor added, “My dream is for this college to produce the largest number of agricultural extension workers in Nigeria because the biggest challenges to agriculture is support. This is what you see in some countries that have done so well in agriculture.” Earlier, the Edo State Head of Service and Chairman, Special Task Team for the College, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa thanked the governor for the vision that has become a reality with commissioning of the institution. He stated, "The commissioning of this institution marks another historic milestone for Edo people, particularly for the college which has opened its doors for agricultural research and knowledge for the people. This is the commitment of the future of agriculture.” Presenting his keynote address, Chairman, Leventis Foundation Nigeria, Ahmed Kazalma Mantey represented by Kayode Simeon, commended the governor for the project, adding that it will advance agriculture education and tackle food insecurity. Obaseki runs one of Nigeria’s most transparent govts, APC transition c’ttee dazed by documentation of projects, others, says Nehikhare …says Okpebholo’s team digging for dirt where there’s none, laments absence from meetings The Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, has said the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki runs one of the most transparent and prudent governments in the country, noting that the members of the transition committee of Senator Monday Okpebholo are only dazed and overwhelmed by the documentation of projects and other achievements of the incumbent government. Nehikhare, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, decried the absence of Okpebholo's transition committee for the second consecutive day from the joint transition session with the team of the State Government. He said the narrative that Okpebholo’s team boycotted the joint sessions over failures of the government’s team to provide necessary documents was false, noting that the government had provided both digital and hardcopy documents to the APC team who are only overwhelmed by the level of documentation of projects and achievements in the last eight years. Raising and showing some of the hard copy documents that have been made available to the APC transition team, Nehikhare insisted that the team must realize that they are a transition and not an inquisitive committee. He said, "We are here again for another transition committee meeting, and as we have noticed yet again that it's only the Edo State Government Transition Team that is present while that of the APC are yet to arrive at the venue of the meeting after over two hours of waiting. "Before the transition meeting started, we had to basically harass the APC to send us a list of their members and it took them days to respond. The Edo State Government did all that because it's the civilized thing to do. If a government is leaving power, it hands over power smoothly and orderly to the next government. "When handing over power, you are not just handing over the instrumentality of power but everything you have done while in Government, to showcase what you have done, the achievement and challenges faced while in power. During our inaugural meeting, we listed out the timetable of how this committee was going to meet because creating a transition Committee when a government is changing hands is crucial for ensuring a smooth transfer of power. We are only having this problem because our brothers from the other side most likely are not prepared for the kind of projects and achievements they saw in our documentation.” Displaying the documents, the Commissioner stated, "These are the hard copies of Edo State Government thematic pillars which were put in place in our normal way of working digitally. But our brothers said it's too complicated for them that they want hardcopy. We have made hard copies of these documents in 24 places but they later informed us that they have increased their membership to 27. We have yet again printed more copies.” He added: "A transition government like ours, we are very proud of what we have done and achieved and we have asked the incoming government to come and inspect what we have done. We have asked them to look at our projects and what we claim to have done but they have refused to even look at the documents.” Noting that they were only dazed by Obaseki’s performance in the last eight years, Nehikhare said during the last gubernatorial election, the APC made spurious claims and peddled lies that the government had no projects but they are today “overwhelmed with documentation, pictures, facts, and data of the governor’s projects and achievements.” He further noted, "Instead of them to face the issue of transition, they have turned themselves into inquisition team. They are asking questions only the Chief Executive can pass to the next Chief Executive. We have answers to all their questions in the document we are presenting to them. "They have a list of about 24 questions they want us to answer as if they are the ones dictating the transition but I would like to remind them that until after November 12th, 2024, Obaseki and this team are in power and are the team in government. "The Edo State Government does not take orders or instructions from members brought in for transition issues. We are not worried about financial data or Edo State assets, they are all documented. Edo State Government has developed the Edo State Government Asset Register as all assets owned by the Edo State Government both in the State and outside the State are all listed in the register. This is available for all Edo people to see.” According to him, "We are the ones transiting and would give them all the information they need. It's not true and quite embarrassing to say the PDP government can't provide them with documentary evidence of financial transactions. Sen. Monday Okpebholo will receive a very detailed handover note from Governor Godwin Obaseki. "Also on the e-gov platform in the office of the governor, all financial transactions, and bank statements, among others are on the governor's dashboard. The transition committee is not the incoming governor but is sent to verify what we have done. “We are here every morning at the recommended time to provide them with what we have done in our transition committee’s report. We will not tolerate lies from them as this government has been very transparent in all we have done and have received countless awards.” He reassured, "We are here to reassure Edo people that the Edo State Government is committed to a smooth handover as we will be here on a daily basis to provide the APC transition team with whatever information they require. The governor will give a detailed handover note to his successor as it's a standard practice all over the world. "As a government, we have provided documentation in digital forms but they said they want it in hardcopies and we have done the same. We have nothing to hide as we are ready to help them visit sites and projects undertaken by this administration.” https://www.godwinobaseki.com/News/obaseki-runs-one-of-nigerias-most-transparent-govts-apc-transition-cttee |
Obaseki to lead discourse on Nigeria’s future trajectory at George Washington University on Oct 23 The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, is billed to speak at George Washington University, on the sidelines of the World Bank/International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings, leading conversations on developing requisite human capital to build the workforce of the future. The session, tagged, ‘Nurturing Nigeria’s Future,’ and organized by the Nigerian Professionals Network (NPN), follows similar conversations held in England. Member of the Organizing Committee, Olumide Lawal, said, “The focus is to convene influential members of the Nigerian Diaspora, development partners, and global thought leaders to explore actionable strategies for harnessing Diaspora resources to fuel impactful investments in Nigeria’s development.” On the choice of Governor Obaseki, Lawal noted, “We are particularly excited to recognize your remarkable contributions to Edo State and Nigeria at large, making you a fitting speaker to share insights on Nigeria's development trajectory.” He added that the event would feature a fireside chat with Governor Obaseki, “where we look forward to an engaging conversation highlighting your work in fostering economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development. “Your leadership has been instrumental in driving impactful initiatives, and we believe your perspective will inspire both local and global stakeholders to deepen their engagement with Nigeria's progress. The event will also serve as a platform for recognizing your leadership, particularly in the areas of governance and human capital development, which have contributed significantly to positioning Edo State as a beacon of growth and innovation.” Governor Obaseki is increasingly wide-sought-after for his expertise and experience in re-imagining public governance in Africa, particularly in mobilizing international and local actors in reforming public education using evidence and technology in tackling learning poverty and leading transformational industrial growth through market-creating innovations. |
Edo govt gives Okpebholo 48 hours to provide evidence to substantiate looting allegations The Edo State Government has given Senator Monday Okpebholo 48 hours to substantiate the looting and vandalization allegations, which he levelled against the government. In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, the government challenged Okpebholo to provide the names of banks from which the government has taken any loans in the last three months according to his allegations or any other evidence to validate his spurious and baseless claims, in line with the principle that he who alleges must prove. He said, "The Edo State Government is giving a 48-hour ultimatum to Senator Monday Okpebholo to provide verifiable proof to substantiate his claims that government officials are looting and vandalising assets in the State. "We are a very serious government and there is no room for such spurious and unfounded allegations which is why we are demanding that Okpebholo and his handlers should within the next 48 hours provide credible and verifiable proof to substantiate their claims. " Okpehbolo must understand that the business of governance in Edo State is very serious, and the office of Governor is not for palace jesters. "It is on this ground that we demand that he, within the next 48 hours, provide empirical evidence to substantiate his spurious looting allegations against the state government." "Otherwise, he must tender unreserved apology to the State Government" Osagie averred. |
EDSG, Okpebholo’s teams to hold inaugural joint transition committee meeting The Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare has disclosed that the inaugural joint-session of the Transition Committee for the Edo State Government and incoming administration will hold on Friday, 18th of October 2024. Nehikhare said the primary objective of the joint meeting scheduled to hold at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) is to facilitate a smooth handover of government. He said, “I want to let the media know that we have received the names of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Transition Committee members and are pleased to announce to Edo people that we have scheduled the joint inaugural meeting for Friday October 18th at 10 am. The meeting will take place in JOOPSA.” According to him, “The primary objective of the committee is to facilitate a smooth handover of government. We look forward to the collaboration of all members in ensuring a seamless transition. This is the first time Edo State is going through this kind of transition from one party to another. We have to set the protocol to make sure everything is done right. “We would keep updating Edo people on a daily basis and continue to invite the press for adequate coverage for the weeks they will be meeting to enable the people to be aware of what is going on.” Nehikhare noted that both transition committees have 24 members on each side and the Edo State Government transition committee is led by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Joseph Eboigbe, while that of the APC is chaired by former Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Pius Odubu. |
Obaseki commiserates with Jigawa State over tragedy from tanker explosion The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commiserated with his Jigawa State counterpart, Malam Umar Namadi, over the tanker explosion in Taura Local Government Area of the State, which led to the tragic loss of over 150 persons and 100 others sustaining various degrees of injuries. Obaseki, in a statement, described the incident as unfortunate, praying for the repose of the souls of the departed. According to him, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death toll from the tanker explosion in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State which reportedly claimed the lives of over 150 persons with 100 others sustaining injuries. It is most disheartening. “Our prayers are with the families of the deceased even as we pray for quick recovery of those injured by the accident.” The governor said that the loss is tragic, noting that the State needs prayers from all and sundry, especially in this time of mourning. According to him, “On behalf of the Government and people of Edo State, I commiserate with the Governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar Namadi; the people of Taura Local Government and the entire Jigawa State over this unfortunate incident and pray that God will grant all the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of lives and strength through this time of grief." |
Wait until Nov 12 to begin governance, Edo does not have two governors – Govt upbraids self-styled governor-elect assistants The Edo State Government has advised associates of Sen. Monday Okpebholo to wait until November 12 to begin governance instead of making spurious allegations and claims aimed to create the impression that there were two governors in Edo State. In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, described recent statements by a so-called special assistant to the Governor-elect as spurious as it was not only incoherent and riddled with fake news but also contained unfounded conjectures targeted at undermining government. He said: “A self-styled special assistant who nobody knows issued a statement to create the impression that there were two governors in Edo State. Assuming he is really speaking for the Governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, the immodesty is most reprehensible. He made wild allegations, which he cannot substantiate because they are barefaced lies. “It is quite understandable that these elements are angling for jobs, but there must be some sort of clear-headedness and not this resort to outlandish and amateurish mudsling.” “The next administration begins on November 12, 2024, and actors representing the incoming administration should wait for this date to come before they begin to govern as there cannot be two governors of Edo State at the same time,” he added. |
We took bold, hard decisions to change the attitude of workers, reposition our civil service in 8 years, says Obaseki .... swears in members of Edo Civil Service Commission The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, said his administration has over the last eight years undertaken deep-rooted reforms to change the attitude and thinking of workers in the State and reposition the State's civil and public service for improved service delivery. Obaseki disclosed this at the swearing-in of members of the Edo State Civil Service Commission held at the EXCO Chambers in Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital. The governor said the focus and priority on the civil servants was deliberate because they are the most important asset of any government. Obaseki while inaugurating the five new members of the State's Civil Service Commission, charged them to improve on the innovations of his administration which has placed the State's civil and public service above others in the Country. The members of the Commission include Iguodala Aluyi who serves as Chairman, with Ehi Obaseki, Gilbert Adegboyega, Julie Olatunji, and Margaret Ohiowele as members. Recall that the Governor had on October 2, 2024, forwarded a letter to the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) requesting the confirmation of the five nominees as Chairman and members of the Edo State Civil Service Commission. Obaseki, at the inauguration on Tuesday, said, “This afternoon we have undertaken a very significant event and process with the swearing in of the new members of the Civil Service Commission of Edo State. “This is a watershed moment in our State. It’s a culmination of the very important and deep-rooted reforms we have undertaken in Edo State over the last eight years to reposition the Civil Service.” According to him, “The most important asset of any government, institution or State is the people who work in that institution. The most valuable instrument for the Edo State Government is the staff that works for the Government. If the people are the priority and assets, it therefore means that most priority and attention must be paid to such people. “In the last 8 years, we have taken deep-rooted steps to change the positioning, attitude, thinking, and infrastructure of our public service. I started with the public service and I am ending with the public service.” Obaseki said the Civil Service Commission has been designed to serve as a human resources agency of government and not a political contraption, noting, “That agency is supposed to nurture, hire, and train this critical asset of government. The commission is not an agency to be taken as another political structure. “The quality and character of the Civil Service Commission will determine whether the service makes progress or not. It must not fail to go through the high human resources principles to hire into the service, pay attention to training and mentoring of staff in government, ensure appropriate rewards and sanctions are melted out properly and fairly, and advice on reward and compensation commensurate with what it has put in to have a great service.” He further noted, “We have been deliberate in constituting this commission to strike the balance and make that shift between traditional thinking and staffing in government as well as the new thinking to manage the staff in government with sound principles. “In this appointment, we have a delicate balance of people with local and international experience in human resources management and retired civil servants with proven experience on how the civil service works. With this shift, Edo will never go back with the mistake made in terms of managing the workforce.” Charging the members of the Commission on effectiveness and efficiency, Obaseki said, “You also have to advise the government and broaden the scope of the commission to deal with all public servants.” “You are a professional organ in government and must strive to be professional no matter the distraction to get the best into the service and retain them to enable us to strive,” he further charged. Appreciating the governor for the opportunity to serve, on behalf of other members of the Commission, Iguodala Aluyi noted, "I thank you for the opportunity given to us to serve as we will not take it for granted. “The confidence repose in this commission is a responsibility to work and collaborate in ensuring that Edo State Government workforce is propelled for maximum benefit.” PHOTO NEWS L-R: Members, Edo State Civil Service Commission: Gilbert Adegboyega; Julie Olatunji; Chairman of the Commission, Lalla Aluyi; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his Deputy, Engr. Edo 2024: CDS meets Obaseki, commits to a peaceful, free, and fair guber poll …says President Tinubu has mandated us to ensure a fair, credible process The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, on Wednesday, met with the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, reassuring that the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with its sister security agencies, would ensure a free, fair, credible, and peaceful gubernatorial election come September 21, 2024. The Chief of Defence Staff gave the assurance when he and other top military officers deployed to the State on election duty, met with Governor Godwin Obaseki, at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital. General Musa, who noted that the Nigerian Armed Forces were in the State to support and make sure the election was peaceful, called on political actors in Edo not to raise tension in the State because of the election. He said, “I am delighted to be here and my visit here today is to bring peace. Having watched unfolding events on TV and tension within the State, I usually want to come a few days before any election to preach peace. “As Nigerians, we should learn how to do things properly as there is no need to raise tension because of the election; it's not necessary. We have seen how other Countries conduct elections peacefully as people will be working, and doing their normal things while elections are on. I wonder why ours seem to be different. “I want to assure you that members of the Armed Forces are here to support you in this election and make sure that it’s peaceful. “Our mandate from Mr. President is that the Edo Governorship Election should be peaceful, free, fair and credible. This is what we are here to do; everybody you see here is here to ensure that it’s done. That is the mandate from Mr. President.” He further stated, “This is why I am here to see the troops and address them critically for them to understand the importance of free, fair and credible elections in Edo State. We give you the assurance that none of us are going to take sides as we would ensure that there is peace in Edo State. “Nobody is to take sides. Whoever is the person that is popular and the people want, the people should be able to elect such a person but not the person imposed on them. I can guarantee you. We have done it in other States in the past three elections, we want to do the same here. You would have noticed that it went well and we want to do the same here. The days of impunity are over; election is not war. People should not die because they want to elect a leader.” Commending Governor Obaseki for his government’s developmental strides, the CDS added,” I congratulate you on all your efforts and things you have done for Edo people. I have served in Edo State and the State has been part of me. I thank you for all you are doing and the warm reception.” Governor Obaseki, who was delighted to receive the Chief of Defence, said the visit was very reassuring to the people of the State. He said, “I want you to help me thank your men in Edo State. Since the resumption of the GOC, he has been very supportive in terms of security in Edo State. A few weeks ago, we went to commission an army operations base in Ehor which has stabilized security in the Benin Auchi axis. “We had approval to build another in Sobe which has reduced drastically the incident of kidnapping and banditry around that axis. We are writing to you through the GOC for approval for the third base along the Northern border between Edo and Kogi State where we are still having incidents. “The Chief of Air Staff has been kind enough to collaborate with them to set up a FOB towards the Okada axis. This tells you the level of support and cooperation that we have been receiving from your men.” He continued: “I am glad you are here today because some of the political actors don't seem to understand the national security implications of this Edo election. The way some people have conducted themselves, it's quite on becoming of people who swore to oath. “Politicians can behave the way they like but members of the security agencies should give the public assurances and confidence. We are not asking for any favour but saying that Edo citizens should be free to go to the polls to express themselves the way they wish, and we will accept the outcome of a properly conducted poll. “But when you have a situation where citizens are being intimidated by men in uniform, it's not acceptable. Last night, I was woken up at 3 am that some policemen at Edo Central were trying to arrest people. I got a call again this morning about a Sienna Bus with a mandate to come and arrest people. “We have people arrested and taken away from Edo to Abuja, instead of trying those they claimed to have committed a crime in Edo. The people arrested and taken to Abuja have been detained for more than two weeks on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police. “When we confronted the IGP in Edo, during the Peace Accord signing, he said they were arrested for murder but when they were finally charged to court, the charge read possession of firearms.” He further stated, “As I speak, we have our people arrested and being detained in Suleja, Niger State, because they don't want them to participate in the election on Saturday. When you create situations like this, it results in a lack of trust and confidence. “When an opposition candidate is campaigning with a police helicopter in the State, then I don’t think it’s fair as they are not creating a level playing field for all candidates. “Sir, if it's possible to appeal to the IGP because we know what EndSARS protests caused the people of Edo State in terms of rebuilding the burnt-down police stations “We received a lot of information and when we pass it across to the relevant authorities they fail to act. We have intelligent reports of arms movement and thugs being housed in hotels but nothing is being done.” “We don’t want an election that will lead to loss of lives because it’s not necessary. Once citizens feel they are not being treated fairly by the instrument of the state, you will see the kind of tension and violence that can occur in an election. Your presence here today is reassuring. There can't be a better assurance as you understand the national security implications of this election,” Obaseki added. Edo has Nigeria’s most professional civil servants who wouldn’t be coerced to vote for continuity, PDP replies APC Again, Kassim Afegbua, the Media Consultant to the Edo All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council, has come out with one of his infantile, mischievous, and utterly baseless statements, this time claiming that the jobs of civil servants have been threatened. In the hogwash which was a clear reflection of his warped thinking, Afegbua lowered the bar of commonsense, scribbling falsehoods, lies, and mistruths in his desperate attempt to cajole civil servants into voting his failed party and its deadbeat candidate. This is however not surprising coming from Afegbua, as these sorts of lies can only make sense in the jaundiced minds of his likes, for whom anything goes, and because anything goes for them, they think it is the same for other people. We want to unequivocally state that there is no such thing and the government never made any statements whatsoever threatening civil servants. The dimwitted scribbling is not only false but a figment of the jaundiced imagination of Kassim Afegbua, whose loyalty is to mammon and not the people. The civil servants in Edo State are Nigeria’s happiest workers. They are liberated and well-empowered and have no reason to vote for Kassim Afegbua’s sinking party, the APC, whose government at the centre has not only superintended the liquidation of the Nigerian State but has inflicted untold hardship and suffering on the people. In fact, the performance of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government in the last eight years, particularly in the civil service, including paying the highest minimum wage in the country, improving of working environment, introduction of health insurance for all Edo workers, prompt payment of salaries and pensions, migration to Contributory Pension Scheme, the training, retraining and continuous training for the workers, no civil servant in Edo State needs to be coerced to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Kassim Afegbua is only expressing his frustration having come to the understanding that the vote of every civil servant in Edo State will go to the PDP and he can’t deal with it. Afegbua can continue living in a fool’s paradise, lying to himself to satiate his gluttonous appetite while all Edo people who want the best for their State and have witnessed firsthand the bold and impactful transformation of their State in the last eight years under the leadership of Governor Obaseki come out on September 21 to secure the victory of the PDP and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, to build on the foundation that has been laid in the last eight years. *Crusoe Osagie* _Special Adviser on Media Projects_ September 18th, 2024 |
Obaseki commissions Sakponba, Sapele Road Junction improvement work, computerized vehicle centre The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, commissioned Sakponba and Sapele Road Junction improvement works, in line with the government’s commitment to improve the transport system. The governor also commissioned a computerized vehicle centre for the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) in the State. Obaseki who said his government has since 2016 focused on redesigning the State’s transportation system, said the State has continued to regulate the sector, ensuring a more effective and efficient system. He said, “We started regulating the way people behave on our roads and set up the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) to help out. We have seen a remarkable improvement in the system of transportation. We set up an independent board to manage transportation. We set up the Edo State Transportation Management Authority.” On the newly inaugurated junctions, Obaseki noted, “These junctions are in the transportation master plan which is a part of the 30-year Edo State master plan. Edo State Transportation Management Authority is in charge of everything related to transportation in the State.” He said his administration will install CCTV cameras to monitor the activities of motorists and check criminal activities across the State which will be linked to the command and control center. The governor stated, “I want to thank various transportation unions in the State as they are part of the master plan. You have been supporting our administration and your support is key. I appeal to you to collaborate with EDSTMA to ensure all plans are incorporated into the master plan. We need your collaboration to ensure the plan succeeds.” At the commissioning of the VIO Computerized Vehicle Inspection Centre, Governor Obaseki said the centre will help improve the worthiness of vehicles in the State, ensuring they are in good shape so as to minimize accidents. On her part, the Managing Director of Edo State Transportation Management Authority, Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor commended the governor for his developmental strides across all sectors of the State. Commending the governor for the project, she noted that "this transportation management system will be replicated across major junctions in the State. “The aim of the junction improvement work is to improve traffic flow and reduce the travel time of commuters. I appeal to pedestrians to always use the walkway as it's not for trading.” |
Obaseki, Ighodalo hail Edo teachers’ role in education revolution in Edo …urge support for PDP, Ighodalo to ensure sustainability of gains, successes The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended Edo teachers for their immense role in the success recorded in transforming the State’s education sector over the past eight years. The governor, who spoke during a meeting with the teachers at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said the teachers have by their invaluable service continued to contribute to creating a brighter future for the State and children in the State He was joined by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 21 governorship election in the State, Dr. Asue Ighodalo. The governor took the teachers down memory lane, recalling the times they were disgraced, humiliated, and intimidated by the previous administration, noting that his government has changed the narrative and has continued to prioritise the welfare and well-being of the teachers. Obaseki said, “How many of you remember in 2016 when they said you should come and do an examination? They humiliated you nationally and internationally. Those who didn’t even go to school humiliating our teachers. “Here you are today; you are the one still teaching the children today. The children are learning and you have transformed the sector, making the State a learning ground for other States and sub-nationals who are using our EdoBEST programme as a platform to transform their education system. You are rewarded effectively for your contributions to the development of the State. “It takes two to tangle. As a government, we believe in our teachers and their abilities and we have demonstrated it and we will continue to demonstrate it. Just do your part and leave the rest to us. “God will continue to bless you because you are touching and changing lives, creating a better tomorrow for our children and state by taking care of the children and pupils under your care as teachers in our schools.” The governor added, “I am here today to sit down to check if you have done your own part and if you have done it, then you need to be promoted. “You have worked from January till December; let's test and check if you have done well as we know you all have done well, you then will be promoted. You don't need to know anybody before you are promoted. That is the kind of government we wish to continue to run in Edo State. “The teachers own the land and know what to do in this election. I have almost 400,000 children in your care and those children have parents and they have seen what you have done in the lives of their children and want more for them.” Urging the teachers to come out en masse to vote for the PDP and its candidate to ensure the sustainability of gains, and successes, the governor stated, “People who did not go to school can't be interested in you as all the APC people don’t have meaningful education and will not want to continue with great reforms we have embarked on. “The next governor you will have known much about the administration and all the policies and reforms we have taken in the last 8 years. The day we launched the EdoBEST programme in the State, Asue Ighodalo called me to say that we have started a revolution in Edo State. “Asue Ighodalo’s interest in education has not changed since the first day we launched EdoBEST and he will continue from where we stop.” “I have over 15,000 teachers and I am handing them over to you and you need to take care of them because they are responsible for shaping the lives of our children,” he added. Ighodalo, on his part, commended the teachers for their support and collaboration with the Edo State Government to change the face of education in Edo State. He said, “I saw that we are creating a revolution from the first day we launched the EdoBEST programme, and with the programme, we are taking over the hearts and minds of young people, moulding and making it competently and realistically strong, preparing them to take over the leadership of the State. “I was part of the economic team for former Governor Adams Oshiomhole when Governor Obaseki was the chairman and I know how we struggled on the education front but with Obaseki in the leadership position, we have seen the difference. “We are creating a competent and capable workforce in Edo State that will immediately attract businesses, creating an enabling environment and a prosperous economy by a revolution.” Ighodalo added, “I thank the teachers for their determination in remoulding the minds and hearts of our young people to start the greatness of our State.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R (front row): Executive Chairman, Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs. Salami Ozavize; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, during a meeting with the teachers at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Speaking to the mammoth crowd of party faithful at the PDP campaign grand finale, Obaseki thanked the people for always supporting the party and his government, leading to the successes recorded by his administration in the last eight years. Urging the people to come out enmasse to ensure the party’s victory at the September 21 poll, Obaseki said, “When I came into office in 2016, I was told that teachers couldn't read, that they were not good and were abandoned but today Edo is number one in education. “When I came, they said civil servants were corrupt, not good, and were not paid salaries on time but today, we have the best civil service in Nigeria. When I took over office our pensioners were not paid but today they get their pensions on time. “In 2016, there were no jobs in Edo State, no hope for our youths as they were all traveling out of the country through illegal means out of frustration but we have changed the narrative, and created jobs for our youths.” He urged the crowd of supporters to vote for the PDP to ensure that the State continues to move forward, adding, “Our State is the safest in the country. Our vigilantes are the best in the country. Now they want to spoil all our achievements. “Will you vote for insecurity and people who did not go to school to lead us? The decision is clear and next Saturday is the election day and we need you all to come out en masse to vote for PDP and ensure Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie win the election and become the governor and deputy governor respectively. “ On his part, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar urged the people not to be scared or allow themselves to be intimidated but rather come out enmasse to vote and stay to defend their votes, ensuring that the party and its candidate emerge victorious. He added that the APC threatened to take over the State four years ago but they didn’t succeed because Edo people can't be intimidated, appealing to them to do same this time around and ensure Asue Ighodalo becomes the governor of Edo State. Also, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed said the PDP governors are more united than ever, urging the people to stay united and ensure the victory of the party’s candidate. The Chairman of Edo National Campaign Council and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri commended the developmental strides of Governor Godwin Obaseki, urging the people to vote for PDP and Asue Ighodalo to sustain the progress and development in the State. He said, “Obaseki has made a mark in Edo State in terms of development, performance, and human capacity development. Edo people need to vote right to bring in another competent person like Obaseki or a man better than Obaseki. “We should support and vote for Asue Ighodalo because he is the most credible candidate for this election. We will all be here next Saturday. We can't be intimidated or threatened by anybody or party. We will vote, protect, and defend our votes and ensure Asue Ighodalo wins the election.” Ighodalo and his running mate Osarodion Ogie were also presented with the party’s flag by the National Chairman of PDP, Damagun. Receiving the flag, Ighodalo reassured, “We will govern with sincerity, and transparency and do what will make Edo great again. Edo 2024: INEC, APC planning to postpone guber poll, Obaseki alleges …says nation’s democracy at risk, urges vigilance …‘Oshiomhole, APC campaigning with police helicopter’ ... ‘If APC writes results, they will meet the consequences’ The Edo State Governor and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is working in cahoots with the All Progressive Congress (APC) to postpone the September 21, 2024 governorship poll on the eve of the election. The governor who disclosed this while addressing members and leaders of the State’s chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) said the game plan was to destabilize the PDP and make way for the devious rigging plot of the opposition APC. Obaseki, who noted that the country’s democracy was at risk, urged for vigilance to avert plans by the APC to subvert the will of Edo people leveraging ‘federal might.’ Expressing confidence that the party will come out victorious despite the intimidation and harassment of its members and chieftains, the governor said, “We will win the next governorship election in Edo State but need to be vigilant as our democracy is at risk. Some people want to destroy democracy in Nigeria.” He continued: “We refused to sign the peace agreement yesterday because we don't know if what we have presently is the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) or the All Police Congress (APC). This is the new meaning of APC. Why will they be intimidating people? Aligning with APC to intimidate, scare and oppress citizens of Edo State. “I arrived from Lagos this morning and saw a police helicopter in Benin City to carry Comr. Adams Oshiomole. He has been using a police helicopter to campaign, and it's not fair. We all own Nigeria but how can the police be so partisan in this election? We can’t sit down for them to come and kill all of us. “They have told us that whether we like it or not, they will use federal might and write the results. We don't have any federal might but have the might of God and the might of the workers of Edo State. I know that the workers in the State will not keep quiet. They have to kill all of us first before they hijack Edo State.” He added, “On that day, make sure everybody comes out as we are much more than them; don't be scared. They are boasting in Abuja and have all sorts of plans but we are ready.” On ploys to postpone the guber polls, the governor revealed, “They plan to postpone the election on the eve of the election to destabilize us. But whenever they postpone the election to, we will win the election. It will be a long fight but we know it's a struggle.” He further charged: “I call on all the unions to stand firm to vote and defend their votes. If they refuse to allow us to vote, refuse to count our votes and refuse democracy in Edo, I have told them that it will be the beginning of a crisis in Nigeria. I am saying this with all sense of responsibility. “All we asked as Edo people is for the appropriate authority in charge of the election to allow the votes of citizens to count. We are pleading and calling on the international community to take note of what is going on and taking place in Edo State.” Obaseki added, “APC has not offered us an alternative. They have not campaigned on any meaningful thing we can hold them onto. They don’t have any credible candidate but all they boast of is federal might. They say they will write the results and we can go to court. We will not go to court because they can’t write the results. If they write the results, they will meet the consequences.” |

Edo 2024: APC candidate’s convoy crushes Emmanuel Edionwe, four others to death in fatal accident … one in critical condition at Irrua Specialist Hospital In what is perhaps a most tragic turn of events in the lead up to the Edo State 2024 governorship election, the convoy of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo has crushed one Emmanuel Edionwe and four of his friends to death on Warrake Road around Uzebba axis in Owan West Local Government Area in Edo State. The tragic accident has left the families of the deceased traumatized and devastated with many of them shattered by the fact that the victims were returning from a burial ceremony when they met their untimely death. The bodies of four of the deceased victims were deposited at the Edo State University, Uzaurie Mortuary in Etsako West Local Government Area. It was gathered that Okpebholo’s convoy rammed into the victims’ silver Camry sedan car when they were attempting to negotiate a sharp bend on the road, with many eye-witnesses stating that the accident occurred as a result of rough driving. A relative of Emmanuel Edionwe, one of the deceased, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: “We are devastated beyond words. Emmanuel was a good, easy going boy who should not be dead today. “He and his friends were driving in the Silver Camry car. After the accident, we just learnt that five of them have died after the collision with Okpebholo’s convoy. Emmanuel and four of his friends are dead. There is just one of them who is in critical condition and is now being nursed to life at the hospital.” Noting that Edionwe died at the Irrua Specialist Hospital (ISH) in Irrua, where he was later transferred to for specialist care, he said: “It was officials of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) that evacuated the bodies from the scene of the accident. Four of them died yesterday. One died this morning. There is only one surviving person in critical condition.” The source noted that Okpebholo sneaked to check on the victims in the hospital they had been rushed to in Auchi after the accident but that it was disheartening that the APC campaign council has refused to acknowledge the incident or even commiserate with the affected families. “We feel really bad that the APC has not said anything about the accident. It is insensitive. No one who suffers such a loss should be left without closure,” he said, crying profusely. |
