Obaseki inspects ongoing revamp of Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Palm House, Edo School of Health Tech

…assures speedy completion

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has inspected the ongoing revamp of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, the Edo School of Health Technology, and the Palm House, all in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The governor, who was in the company of members of the State Executive Council (EXCO), assured speedy completion of the projects and all other ongoing projects in the State.

Speaking to journalists after the inspection tour, Obaseki said, “The whole idea is that as part of our finishing well agenda, we want to make sure that every project we started as a government is completed. So, we wanted to see the status of these projects under construction.”

At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, the governor expressed satisfaction with the level of work done, adding that the facility would be ready for use in no distant time.

According to him, “You saw that we have finished with the Out-patient Department and work is in full gear to complete the in-patient ward and the emergency section. The whole idea is that, having brought down the Central Hospital, we now have a network of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and the Edo Specialist Hospital. You now have this comprehensive health hub that would compete with international hospitals with up to 12 specializations.”

Noting that his government took a deliberate step to revamp the School of Health Technology having met it in a state of disrepair, the governor said, “You know I visited here several months ago and you could hardly believe the state of the school. For any government that wants to render services to the people, the foundation of any health care system is the primary health care system. That is the school that trains and equips manpower to support and service the health care system.”

According to him, “We have six specializations, and at any point in time, we would be able to cater for over a thousand students or five hundred for each stream. I am pleased with the progress of work done so far. As I promised, before the middle of next year, these projects would have been delivered.”

Obaseki also inspected the Palm House Benin, which is the last project among the series of projects that have been completed at the Secretariat Complex along Benin- Sapele Road, noting that the upgrade was a total overhaul from its former state of disrepair.

PoliticsObaseki Charges New Council Chairmen, Others, On Accountability, Transparency by Aisosa25(op): 7:03pm On Oct 23, 2023
Obaseki charges new council chairmen, others, on accountability, transparency

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged the newly inaugurated local government chairmen, vice chairman and secretaries, to ensure inclusivity, accountability and transparency in the discharge of their duties.

The governor gave the charge during a two-day onboarding programme for new local government council chairmen, in Benin City.

The governor, who declared open the programme at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City, the Edo State capital, charged the council officials to prioritize developmental projects to positively impact and improve the lives of the people at the grassroots.

The governor said, “We are here to onboard our newly elected local government chairmen, vice-chairmen and secretaries to ensure they key into our policies and programme to deliver good governance to our people.

“We believe in the autonomy of local government because the constitution provides that local government should be autonomous. We should also insist on accountability and transparency to our people. You are autonomous but accountable because the resources at your disposal to undertake developmental works in your various local government areas belong to Edo people and should be accounted for.

“Our focus is to ensure that the resources we receive in Edo, either from federal allocation, taxes raised from our people or money borrowed are judiciously and properly utilized and accounted for. It's a pitiable situation we experience in Nigeria where individuals elected or appointed suddenly begin to feel that the institution belongs to them and that they can do what they like as they are there to serve their families, themselves, friends and not the people. They sometimes feel they should not be accountable and anytime accountability is demanded or required of them, they see it as witch-hunting.”

He continued: “In Edo, over the last seven years, we have made sure we run a government where the people feel they are included and heard and the government in place is there to serve them and it is expected that the same trickles down to the local government areas. Our government, whether State or local government, should be seen as inclusive, accommodating all shades of opinions. Whether you voted for us or not, all should be included in the decisions that we make.

“We have not focused on individuals but on policies that will touch the lives of the people as this has made them feel included in our government. The social well-being of our people is critical to us as they expect the government to do some things for them and we are focusing on the people rather than individuals. We have the responsibility as a government to take fundamental policies that will help in organizing society and development.”

The governor further noted that his government has undertaken holistic reforms across various sectors of the State, including education, health, and economy, among others, placing the State on the path of sustainable and accelerated growth.

Obaseki said, “Basic education is free and qualitative in Edo and we have put it at its very best. Developing that aspect is necessary as basic education is the responsibility of the local government.

“Basic education collapsed in Edo State as we saw it, but my administration is doing its best, working so hard, and putting in a lot of resources to ensure it thrives. We have not been able to refurbish all of our basic schools and one administration alone can’t. That is why we hope for a good succession to enable the development to continue.”

“The healthcare system at the foundation also collapsed before we came into office but we are doing our best to revive it. We also focused on institutional reforms as you will come and go as local government chairmen but institutions built will remain. You must ensure that your Institution is strong enough to live after you may have left office.”

The governor charged, “The era of subsidy is over and we are moving to the era where Nigeria will only survive based on what it produces. The future will be determined by how we organize our local government and State to support economic activities as it is based on taxes received from economic activities that we can run local government and State. A day will come when what we raise and get from Abuja will not be enough and sufficient to run the local government. We need to lay the foundation for that day to enable us to survive without oil.”

On his part, Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., while speaking to the participants, charged on quality service delivery to Edo people at the grassroots, adding, “Government is all about the people and whatever we do, the people must be considered. As Chairmen, the welfare and security of your people should be your concern and priority. The chairmen should live within the local government areas and provide services for the people as you got to that office following their mandates.”

2023 BOWFT: Betsy Obaseki says increased private sector sponsorship ‘ll sustain women’s preseason football tournament

…holds draws, unveils mascots, theme song for third edition of annual tourney

…Edo First Lady hails Edo Queens for Sheroes Cup victory, rewards team

The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has said the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) has continued to receive increased private sector sponsorship which will ensure that the tournament is sustained beyond 2024.

She noted that since the tournament’s inception, it has kept pushing for the development of young girls in Nigeria using football as a platform.

The First Lady of Edo State said this at the draw of the third edition of the BOWFT, themed, "End Gender-Based Violence,” held at the Presidential Villa, in Government House, Benin City.

The official mascot and theme song for the third edition of the annual Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament which will commence on Monday, October 23rd, 2023 with 13 female teams battling for pre-season glory, was also unveiled.

Per the draw, Edo Queens, Naija Ratels, Remo Stars are drawn in Group A; Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, Confluence Queens, Group B; FC Robo, Fortress FC, Heartland Queens, Rivers Angel, Group C while Delta Queens, Ekiti Queens and Osun Babes FC are in Group D.

Mrs. Obaseki noted that since its first edition, the tournament has continued to grow and the organisers have kept to the promise of ensuring standard and world-class recognition, adding that the BOWFT has been recognized by FIFA, the world football governing body.

According to her, “This tournament is private sector-driven and it has nothing to do with the Edo State Government as the tournament will continue to be held even after my husband leaves office as it's funded by the private sector.

“Sponsorship for this tournament continues to increase every year because corporate entities see what we are doing and they have begun to identify with the tournament. We got an award from FIFA for the tournament and this gave us international recognition.”

Betsy Obaseki said most of the clubs participating in the pre-season tournament play in the top female league in Nigeria except two others amateur teams from Edo State brought in to be groomed, trained and exposed.

She added, “This is geared towards creating a pathway for girls to excel in this noble football career.

“The governor has fought to eradicate human trafficking and illegal migration in the State and this tournament has added value to that fight and today Edo State which used to be number one is nowhere near number 10.”

On other activities lined up for the tournament, she said, “The tournament also has a seminar on the side where speakers are brought in to discuss issues affecting the girl-child. In the first edition, the theme was “Promoting the Girl-Child”. For the second edition, we had “Fight Against Drug Abuse”. This year’s edition is “End Gender-Based Violence.”

Betsy Obaseki, who received a trophy won by Edo Queens at the 6th edition of the Sheroes Cup organized by Ratels Sports Development Foundation, Abuja, rewarded the female team with N1 million, charging them to ensure that they win the third edition of BOWFT in Benin City.”

The female Football teams in this year’s tournament are representing Nasarawa, Edo, Bayelsa, Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, Imo and Osun States.
Guests at the event include sports editors from media houses across the nation; Executive Chairman Edo State Sports Commission, Yusuf Ali; former Chairman, Edo State Football Association, Frank Ilaboya, amongst others.

According to her, “The Edo State Government under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki, has in the past seven years, taken deliberate steps to engender inclusive and sustainable development, providing opportunities for women and youths to realize their fullest potential.

“Governor Obaseki, described as the most women-friendly governor, has more women occupying top positions in his government (over 30 per cent), which affords the State the opportunity to leverage their creative thinking and innate potential to build a better and inclusive society.”

She noted, “Through EdoJobs, the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has continued to train and empower more women and youths in the State, encouraging them to tap into the potential of digital technologies. Over 25,000 women and 100,000 youths have benefitted from various training programmes on in-demand tech skills in fields such as Web Development Fundamental, Data Analytics Fundamental and Digital Marketing Fundamental, among others.”

Alufohai added, “The 2023 Alaghodaro Summit, being the last to be celebrated under the leadership of the women and youth-loving governor will enable the State government to assess the impact of its policies and programmes on job creation, youth and women empowerment, basic and technical education and youth and women participation in governance, among others, while hearing directly from the ultimate beneficiaries of these reforms, who are Edo women and youths.”

Obaseki laments, blames Nigeria’s problems on poor leadership decisions

... ‘I warned against today’s hardship but was ignored’

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has blamed the current socioeconomic challenges bedeviling the country on poor leadership decisions by the nation’s leaders.

Obaseki, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said as an investment banker, he foresaw the hardship faced by Nigerians today as a result of bad economic decisions by leaders of the country and several raised alarm on the need for corrective measures to today’s dire situation but was ignored.

He said as governor, he understands that Nigerians are passing through very tough and difficult times, urging them to be resilient and not lose hope.

The governor said, “I know as a Governor that we are all going through suffering in the land. I understand how the economy works and saw this ahead of time. I have been shouting since I became Governor that the way we are going and the kind of decision many of us politicians were making will bring about hardship.”

He further noted, “Nigeria was never like this before. God in his mercy endowed Nigeria like no other Country in the World. How many countries in Africa have 100 million people not to talk about 200 million? God designed us as the biggest market in Africa. God gave us all and the problem we are facing as a nation is the one created by us, particularly our leaders.”

Obaseki charged, “If you are a leader and you are not ready to sacrifice yourself, then you are not ready for leadership. Leadership is not how much you can get for yourself. Nigerians are suffering today due to bad leadership. Nigeria is rich in terms of resources and has no business with poverty and suffering. We can grow and produce all we need to consume in Nigeria, so why are we not doing it?”

Fuel Subsidy Removal: Over 700,000 commuters benefit from Obaseki’s free bus scheme in one month, save over N314.7m

One month into the Free Bus Ride Scheme by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led State Government, 706, 398 commuters have benefitted from the scheme, which covers both intra and inter city services operated by the State-owned Edo City Transport Services (ECTS), as part of support to Edo people following soaring cost of living occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

This is as over N314, 665, 500 was saved by beneficiaries of the service for the one-month period on commercial services.

The Edo State Commissioner for Communications and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, disclosed this while appraising the performance of the scheme, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Nehikhare noted that the service was introduced by Governor Godwin Obaseki on September 11, 2023 to run for initial two months, as part of the government’s welfare package to alleviate the sufferings of the people of the State, particularly the poorest of the poor as a result of the negative impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

Analyzing the data generated by the free bus ride scheme in one month, he disclosed that 14,324 passengers benefited from the inter-city service while 692,074 passengers benefited from the intra- city service.

“If the commuters were made to pay for these services, a total of N314,665,500 would have been expended by them, however, this money would have been saved by the commuters due to the free bus service offered by the state government,” Nehikhare said.

According to him, “This free bus ride has become popular among Edo people. It is helping them save their transport money since the service commenced on the 11th of September. Edo people have been directly touched by these initiatives. We are pleased by the appreciation we have received from Edo people since the programme commenced.”

He further said, “The Edo State Government takes the welfare of Edo people seriously and we want Edo people to use the free buses regularly. We know that before now transportation has always consumed close to 50 per cent of families’ budgets. So, the gesture is to help so that they can channel this money to some other needs such as feeding and housing.”

The Commissioner urged the people to take advantage of the free bus service scheme, which is still ongoing as it is expected to run for initial two months, with 1,500,000 commuters expected to benefit from the service during the period.

The service covers the existing routes operated by ECTS cut across the three senatorial districts of the State, spanning Auchi – Igarra – Ibillo–Ososo; Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo, and Abudu-Ubiaja, Abudu-Urhonigbe and Ewohirin to Ewatto while the intra-city routes are Ramat–Kingsquare; New Benin–Kingsquare; Kingsquare – Ekenwan Road; Kingsquare–Airport Road; Kingsquare–Sapele Road and Kingsquare – Adesuwa, Kingsquare–Ogida; New Benin – Upper Mission; Kingsquare–Ugbowo; Kingsquare–Agbor Road; Kingsquare–Upper Sokponba; New Benin – Ugbowo and New Benin–Aduwawa.

Edo tourism sector gets major boost as United Nigeria Airline begins flight operations to Benin

The Edo tourism sector has continued to attract attention from key investors and players in both the national and global economy, with the latest coming from the United Nigeria Airlines, which has concluded plans to commence flight operations to Benin City, the Edo State capital, further increasing the number of airlines operating in the State.

The Benin route has continued to experience increased passenger traffic in the wake of the opening up of the business space by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, which has resulted in a lot of business and tourist visits to the State.

The development was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Dr. Uyi Oduwa-Malaka, who led the management team of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), to visit the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, at the Government House, Benin City.

The visit, according to her, was sequel to the series of engagements by her ministry with the management team of Oba Akenzua II Benin Airport.

She noted that the various engagements with the management were, “on fostering a mutually beneficial alliance with the government. This is with a view to improving the tourism potential and investment drive in the State.”

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FAAN, Kabir Yusuf Mohamed was represented at the meeting by the Director, Commercial and Business Development, Mr. Muyiwa Femi-Pearse.

Describing the outcome of the meeting as satisfactory to both parties, Uyi-Malaka disclosed that, “we were therefore not surprised, but much elated to hear that the United Nigeria Airlines has just added Benin City to its flight routes.”

The Commissioner quoted the Managing Director of the United Nigeria Airline, Obiora Okonkwo, as stating that, “the last seven years have witnessed sustained investment in tourism and has made Edo State the cynosure of all eyes and we have decided to partner with the state to grow her economy by commencing flights into the Benin Airport in the next few weeks.”

Obaseki swears in SAs, SSAs in Owan West, East LGAs, urges paradigm shift in nation’s politics

…says governance should be about devt, improving peoples’ lives

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has inaugurated 44 Special Assistants (SAs) and 10 Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) in Owan West and Owan East Local Government Areas of the State.

The governor, while swearing in the new aides at the Edo State College of Education in Afuze, called for a paradigm shift in politics in the country to a new era centred on genuine service, development and bettering the lives of the people.

Obaseki said, “I am here to tell you that I care about you and it will not be business as usual. I will take care of you.

“Politics must change, politics is about the people and politicians must care for their people. Enough is enough. We cannot say we are in politics and are poorer for it. Politics must help us to get out of poverty.”

He continued: “If I can come here to inaugurate you that means I don’t want you to leave here. You cannot be in Benin or Auchi and be working here. If I get a report that you are not in your base, you will get a letter from me replacing you. You are not absentee SAs or SSAs. If you know that you will not be in the community, let me know now so that I can get those ready to work for us in the party.

“It’s not just another employment but we are here to deliberately make sure that in every ward we have one SA and in some cases, one SSA. They are to take care of and be my eyes and ears in every ward. No week must pass without me getting a report through the SSA of what has happened in your ward.”

The governor further noted, “I want to know if the teachers we are paying are working. I want to know the state of our primary health care centres in each ward, and also that of security in each ward before I hear from other sources. I want to know how people are living in your ward and community. Are they able to eat? Can they go to the farm? If not, why and what can we do about them?”

On his part, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, commended the people of Owan West and East local government areas for their continuous support, which led to victory in the last local government elections in the State.

He said, “We are here in Afuze for the inauguration of Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs) to the Governor in both Owan West and Owan East local government areas. We acknowledge what you have done for the party and the role you have played in the last election that resulted in the massive win at the polls.”

Obaseki makes case for democratisation of education in Nigeria

...says over 400,000 children benefiting from Edo basic education reforms

…Edo First Lady expresses satisfaction with impact of reforms in education sector

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called for the democratisation of education in Nigeria to bridge the education gap and address the country’s dysfunctional education system.

The governor made the call during a courtesy visit by members and executives of the Federal Government Girls College, Benin Alumni Association, at the Government House in Benin City.

Obaseki congratulated the school on their silver jubilee celebration, acknowledging the efforts of former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Gen Samuel Ogbemudia, and the then Minister of Education in the creation of the school.

He said, “We lobbied for the school to be set up in Benin City at that time and the focus and creativity of our governor was to acquire a large portion of land designated as an education hub as you have the University of Benin, and Benin Technical College close to you.

“This school and all others set up at that time were to be part of a system as the thinking after the civil war was to create a united country and also give opportunity for our diversity relating to gender.”

Obaseki continued: “The issue of educating the girl-child is not new to us as a State. That is why we were very concerned when we came into office seven years ago. We concentrated on what was going on with the girl-child following incidents of human trafficking and irregular migration. This led us to prioritise education, particularly education for the girl-child.

“We have turned the situation around as Edo is no longer amongst the first 10 States in the country in terms of human trafficking. We are not where we want to be but will ensure that the examples of institutional building we have seen in the Federal Government Girls College Benin and other Federal Government Colleges across the country trickle down across our educational system.

“This is necessary so that we don’t create a dangerous situation that is emanating from the country with the opportunity gap because of the educational divide we have created. We must democratize quality education and make sure that we remove issues or incidents of learning poverty from our country as we have emphasised education in Edo State.”

He further noted, “We have reset the education system in Edo State through basic education. In Edo State, we have ensured that every child, particularly the girl-child has access to high-quality basic education which is the foundation upon which every other thing rests.

“We are glad today that we have almost 400,000 of these children in our school system. We know each and every one of them as we are able to monitor them through the use of technology. Our goal is to make sure that every child in Edo at the age of 10 is able to read, write, and do their sums right. We are already seeing the results.

“As a State, when a child comes into our educational custody at the age of 6 years, we have responsibility for that child till that child is 15 years old as we create the basics for that child to live a self-sustained life even if that child doesn't have opportunity to go forward.”

Obaseki charged, “You have to belong to the group that will advocate for proper transformation of the education system in Nigeria. Our education is in crisis as our education managers have messed things up. The dropout ratio between primary six and SS1 is 50 percent which is responsible for high trafficking in Nigeria as we have to build the education sector in the country to be able to optimise our potential.”

The leader of the delegation of the alumni body and Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, thanked the governor for the developmental strides in the State especially in the education sector.

PoliticsWe’re Building A Resilient, Sustainable Urban Environment For Edo People by Aisosa25(op): 5:56pm On Oct 12, 2023
We’re building a resilient, sustainable urban environment for Edo people, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government remains committed to creating a safe, resilient and sustainable urban environment for the people of the State.

Obaseki, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, said the government is making headway with the State’s 30-year development plan, tackling environmental degradation, and has embarked on massive regeneration of the forests in the State, encouraging the private sector participants to own forest lands and plant trees that will not be harvested in the next 30 to 40 years.

According to the governor, “We are taking advantage of the urbanization we are witnessing today to build a very resilient urban environment for our people. Benin City alone is home to 50 percent of the population of Edo State.

“There’s nothing bad about urbanization but our responsibility as government is to make this urban environment resilient, sustainable and strong.

”He added, “Urbanization can pull some challenges including overcrowding which Benin City is facing seriously. Environmental pollution and degradation is another issue which led to the setting up of the Edo Forestry Commission to deal with the issues of forestry.

We have embarked on massive regeneration of the forest, encouraging private people to own forest land and plant trees that will not be harvested in the next 30 to 40 years.

”The governor further noted: “Since 2016 we came into office. We have had to deal with one nagging issue which is the physical structures of Edo State where we witnessed massive rural migration to major cities not designed or planned to accommodate the habitat settling in them. We remember the unfortunate situation we had up to 2016 and 2017, emanating from the high rate of migration, and human trafficking; as all these put pressure on the City.

“To administer Edo State as a government, we had to create a plan for the future of the State and we embarked on the design of the Edo State Regional and Benin City Urban Master Plan. We procured the services of a specialist to fly over our State and we now have a very accurate and digital map of what our State looks like from that exercise.

“This information brought in experts to produce the Edo State Regional and Benin City Urban Master Plan which will last over 30 years. Long before now, Edo people have always planned their habitats, but the master plan developed in the 60s has expired.

”He reassured, “We are keen on greening and cleaning our environment. We should take advantage of the environment rather than destroying it. We are keen on cleaning the cities and making them green. Our goal as a government is to restore urban city Benin to its natural state of being in the rain forest.”

Edo trains, evaluates workers for 2022/2023 promotions

The Edo State Government has commenced the training and evaluation of officers in the State’s public service who are due for the 2022 and 2023 promotions, in line with the ongoing transformation of the State's public/civil service.

Addressing participants at the two-day training session for officers between Salary Grade Levels 07 and 16, at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City, the Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., said the State’s civil and public service is now well primed for excellence to deliver quality services to the people.

He restated that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led state government remains committed to realizing the vision of making Edo the best State to live and do business by the year 2050.

Reassuring the government’s commitment to the welfare of the workers, the Head of Service noted, “I am excited about this, and it is our hope and expectation that we will continue to do this. We don’t want a situation where you are due for promotion, and you do not get it. It is now a matter of importance, and going forward, Edo State civil/public officers will not have to suffer stagnancy in their career growth.”

Okungbowa said he is confident that the officers have the capacity to deliver excellently on their assigned duties, adding that Governor Godwin Obaseki is delighted and pleased with how fast and far the service has moved in such a short period of time.

The Head of Service commended the officers for fast adaptation to the e-governance policy and the seamlessness with which they are operating and delivering services, adding that Edo State remains the model and benchmark for other States to measure their e-governance and procurement compliance.

He noted that it has been the policy in Edo State to train officers to build their capacity as well as evaluate them before they are promoted to the next higher level, urging the workers to put in their best, ensuring quality and efficient service delivery to the people of Edo State.

Obaseki charges youths on innovation, harps on digital solutions for govt, private sector

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the State’s adoption of an e-government platform and investment in digital infrastructure would provide new opportunities for youths to innovate and create digital solutions for use by government and the private sector.

The governor said this on Thursday during a Zoom call with participants in the MTN ICT and Business Skills Training Programme, in which youths from across the country participated in a four-week intensive training session.

The governor disclosed that the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) age provides youths with opportunities to build careers in the digital economy, applauding MTN for training youths in innovation and entrepreneurship.

According to him, “For many of you, this will be a redefining experience because you have acquired skills in business and ICT that could possibly redefine your life. It is important that as a country that is in a hurry to industrialise and increase productivity, we must begin to engage our young people, train and get them ready to take advantage of the opportunities that exist. For opportunities that do not exist, young people should be able to create these opportunities.”

Obaseki further noted that the world has gone digital, stressing that it was important that young people embrace technology.
He said, “For us in Edo, our entire government platform today runs on a digital platform. We don’t use paper. We recognise that as a government. And if we do, we know that many businesses that rely on us must also go in that direction.

“It is important that we support the entrepreneurship instinct in young people. By moving onto a digital platform in Edo State, what we have done is to create opportunities in over 50 ministries and agencies to interact digitally and come up with support solutions for citizens. It is not unique to Edo. The world has now become digital.

“The skills you have learnt in the last four weeks are applicable globally and therefore it is important that you continue to hone your skills, invest and improve on yourselves. What you have done is not an end in itself. If anything, it is just the beginning because upskilling is a life-long experience. You have gone through this exercise this year with MTN, but that shouldn’t be the end, you should continue to look for other opportunities to improve yourselves.”

Obaseki commends Edo Rep members for supporting calls for repair of federal roads in Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has applauded the members representing Edo State in the House of Representatives for lending their voice in support of the call to the federal government to immediately begin repairs of dilapidated federal roads in the State to ameliorate the sufferings of the people and boost economic activities in the State.

The commendation comes as the House of Representatives on Tuesday decried the sordid state of federal roads in Edo State and the entire federation, and urged the various federal government agencies including the Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to come up with a speedy modality for the reconstruction these failed roads.

The resolutions were sequel to the adoption of a motion titled, ‘Need for the Reconstruction of the Federal Highways in Edo State,’ moved by Edo representatives on the floor of the National Assembly. The rep members; Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, Dekeri Sunday and seven other lawmakers.

The lawmakers said Edo State serves as a transit point or drive-through for travellers, connected to the East through Ewu/Uronigbe/Agbor/Asaba Roads, the West via Uzebba_Ifon/Ofosu/Okada/Ovia roads, and the North via Auchi/Ekpoma/Benin and Afuze/Sabongidda Ora/Sobe roads, noting that the State is facing serious threats of being cut off from the rest of the country, causing severe hardship on the residents of the State.

Reacting to the call by the lawmakers, Obaseki, who decried the poor condition of federal roads across the State and its consequent impact on the State’s economy, expressed disappointment that his several calls to the failed Federal Government roads to be fixed have not elicited any positive response.

According to him, “We commend our representatives at the National Assembly for the call to the federal government to immediately commence the repair of dilapidated federal roads in Edo State, lending their voice to the several calls we have made in the past on the poor condition of the roads and the need to pay urgent attention to these roads to ameliorate the sufferings of motorists and other road users, without eliciting any positive response.

“We are proud of the action of these our illustrious sons at the House of Representatives which has further solidified their commitment to the welfare of the people of Edo State, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Edo State Government in improving the quality of life of our people.”

Obaseki further noted, “While we have begun efforts to carry out palliative work on a few of the federal roads like the Benin-Sapele Road and Benin-Agbor Road, we urge the federal government to seize the golden opportunity presented by this call to immediately initiate the repairs of all their failed roads in Edo State to ameliorate the sufferings of motorists and our people on the roads.

“We also call on all Edo people at home and in the Diaspora as well as Nigerians to join their voices in calling on the federal government to live up to its responsibility and fix these roads, which is part of the reason they are entitled to over 52 per cent of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) receipts monthly.”

Obaseki tasks registrars on efficient technology adoption in record keeping, administration of tertiary institutions

...as ARNU commends gov’s developmental strides in education, other sectors

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has tasked members of the Association of Registrar of Nigerian Universities (ARNU) on the need to leverage technology in streamlining record keeping and administration of tertiary institutions in the country.

This is as the body commended the governor on his developmental strides in education and other sectors, noting that the gains he has made in education is enviable and historic.

Obaseki, who spoke during a courtesy visit to the Government House, Benin City, by the association led by its Chairman and Registrar of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Mr. Ife Oluwole, assured the association of the government’s continuous support.

According to him, “You are the administrators of universities and determine how the universities function. With the current thinking in administration, there is a need to advance the role of technology in administering universities. Your association has a lot to offer.

“With technology and digitalization, it will be interesting to know where you are in terms of keeping records and digitizing your records. We are glad that you are in the State to think through how to administer the universities as part of your retreat.”

He said the State government has two universities while the federal government has one, with several others privately owned, noting that his administration is thinking through how best to regulate them.

According to him, “As a State, how do we regulate our institutions? Should we not have some responsibilities? Should we not understand what is going on in your institutions? What should be the role of the government? We should understand what you are doing and get reports from you. We would be looking forward to the communique that will come out from this retreat from your vibrant association.”

The governor further noted, “I will look at the strides made in education as I declare your retreat open on Friday. What we are doing as a State that is not said or heard is forcing a rethink in the role of government in education, particularly tertiary education, in an era where budgets are constrained and government has so much to do. What should be the role of the government in education?”

In his response, Chairman of the Association of Registers of Nigerian Universities (ARNU), Oluwole thanked the governor for his developmental strides in the State, particularly in advancing the education sector.

He assured the governor of the readiness of the association in assisting and supporting the State in the advancement of its developmental strides.

“Your commitment in prioritizing education and recognizing its importance is commendable as history will not forget you for the all-round development witnessed in the State during your tenure,” he said.

Oluwole noted that members of the association are in the State for their annual retreat which is a platform to exchange ideas and explore new approaches to address the challenges in the education sector.

He further thanked the governor for paying several years of pension arrears of retirees in the State, saying that, “as you have made a statement that for any nation to flourish, equality and prosperity must be available to everyone.”

Obaseki pledges extension of service years, forwards Harmonised Retirement Age Bill for teachers to Edo Assembly

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has disclosed plans by his administration for the extension of the service years of teachers in the State.

To achieve this, the governor has forwarded the Harmonised Retirement Age Bill for the extension of retirement age for teachers in the State to the Edo House of Assembly (EDHA).

Obaseki revealed this when he addressed teachers at the 2023 Teachers’ Day ceremony held at the Conference Hall of Teachers House in Siluko Road, Benin City.

The bill, he said, is to harmonise the present service and retirement age of teachers, which provides for the extension of the service years from 30 to 35 years and retirement age from 60 to 65 years, noting that as soon as the House passes the bill into law his administration will commence its implementation with immediate effect.

According to him, “As per release of approval letters for a harmonised retirement age for teachers, I don't see why you should worry. I will not say something that I will not do?

“This is an issue of law. I have sent a bill to the House of Assembly to pass it into law and domesticate it and as soon as I get it from the House of Assembly, I will begin to implement it.”

The governor commended the teachers for their commitment to the education sector of the state and implementing the policies of the administration with due diligence, with special reference to the EdoBest policy, which he said has been hugely successful and acclaimed globally.

To this end, he said his administration has the interest of the teachers at heart as they have done well to develop the education sector as the foundation for the accelerated growth of the State, stressing that he would continue to do all within his powers to ensure that their welfare is placed on the first charge in the State.

The governor also promised the teachers that his administration will pay them half of their December salaries in addition to the full month's salaries, alongside the 13th month promised Edo State workers.

“Teachers say I should give them palliatives or gifts for today. I have already promised all workers in Edo State that you will get your 13th month salaries this year. What I will add as a gift to celebrate the teachers because of the World teachers’ day celebration is that, all the teachers will get an additional half a month bonus,” he said.

Obaseki warns against politics of lies, manipulation, swears in new aides in Edo Central

...says politicians must work to earn public trust to win elections rather than rely on courts

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has warned against politics of lies, manipulation and blackmail, noting that politicians must begin to put in deliberate efforts to earn the trust of the people to win elections rather than rely on court judgments for political power.

Obaseki gave this advice during the inauguration of Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs) in Edo Central Senatorial District, in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Council.

The SSAs and SAs were drawn from Igueben, Esan West, Esan South East, Esan North East and Esan Central LGAs of the State.

Obaseki said, “One of the criteria used for this appointment is that you must reside in your wards and if not, we will withdraw your appointment. Any SSA or SA working outside the local government or operating from Benin City will be dropped immediately.

“You are supposed to give a report monthly which will be reviewed to improve the lives of the people. You are a very important plank of our administration.

“We have just gone through our local government election and you campaigned with me and I thank you for what you did, which made it possible for us to have achieved the results we achieved during the election.”

On winning and losing elections by politicians, he noted, “I heard that some people are complaining that they lost the election. I wonder why they will win the election when they didn't come out to campaign. Well, that is the nature of our politics as they believe that the Court will appoint people into power. They rely on the Court for political power rather than hoping on the people for political power.

“Politics is being played on lies, misinformation, and rumours as a way to get political advantages. They want to confuse our people but your job is to put the record straight, letting the people know the truth.

“We have Chairmen and Councillors who will administer the local government councils but those we are swearing in today are officers responsible to the Governor of Edo State as your role is different from that of the local government.

“We have done a lot across the State, particularly in Esan land. EdoBEST has brought confidence in our children and we will be grateful in years to come. When these children will be occupying big and important positions across the world, we will appreciate the investment in education.”

He added, “We have done a lot and tried to make changes in the progress of the State and your job is to let me know what is happening in your locality. We are working to ensure the wards across the State have first-class Primary Healthcare Centers as we are training health workers to man our primary health care centers.

“I need to know what is going on in terms of security and creating economic opportunities for our young people. You must continue to keep us updated as you are the eyes and ears of the governor in the various wards you come from. We will train you and have an onboarding session with you in line with our government’s vision to make Edo great again.”

Teachers' Day: Obaseki commends Edo teachers, adds extra half-month bonus to 13th month salary

…says they are building foundation for Edo greatness

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has promised to pay teachers in the State an extra half-month bonus in December, in addition to the 13th-month salary to be paid to all workers in the State, as part of gifts to celebrate the teachers on the occasion of this year’s World Teachers' Day.

Obaseki made the promise while addressing the teachers during an event to mark the day in the State, with the theme, “The teachers we need for the education we want," held at the Conference Hall of Teachers House in Siluko Road, Benin City.

Commending the teachers for their role in societal development, Obaseki promised to ensure better welfare for the teachers, providing them with the skills, tools, and other incentives to effectively deliver on their roles in society.

The governor said: “Teachers say I should give them palliative or gift for today. I have already promised all workers in Edo State that you will get your 13th month salaries this year. What I will add as a gift to celebrate the teachers because of the World Teachers Day celebration is that all the teachers will get an additional half-month bonus.”

Acknowledging the teachers for supporting the government’s reforms in the education sector, which has made Edo a model State in tackling learning poverty, the governor noted, “With the transformation we have taken in basic education, Edo is now a model to be copied globally as the world is asking us how we did it. I tell them anywhere I go that my teachers are the ones who did it.

“Edo children are no longer known for learning poverty. The world is talking about EdoBEST. Learning poverty is when a child that is up to 10 years old can't read a complete sentence or write. We say such a child is suffering from learning poverty.

“As a government, we owe our teachers in the State and are grateful to them for what they are doing for the future of Edo State as the children they teach are the future of the State. Our teachers are building the future of Edo State, which is human resources.”

He continued: I recall in 2018, I told the teachers that we have to do something and transform the education sector in Edo. But the problem we had in the past was that of trust because of failed promises over the years.

“But in six years, my administration has been able to build trust which is the foundation of anything in life. With trust, we have changed the landscape of education in Edo State. We still have challenges and problems to solve but they are not unique to us. We have done our best to improve in the sector.

“Teachers are the anchor of EdoBEST reforms. You have done well for our children and the reforms are far-reaching as people are coming into the State to learn how we did it. Our doors are open for them to learn how we have achieved what we have achieved.”

Describing the theme of the celebration as apt, the governor further stated, “We believe we have already started grooming the teachers we want that will help us fulfill the educational vision we want for our future leaders.

“We have equipped our teachers in the basic schools with technological devices to enhance teaching. We have laid 2,000km of fiber optic connection across the local governments in Edo State and our plan is to connect every school and empower more teachers to give better education and information to our students.

“We will build on what we have started and pray we get a successor that believes in education and the teachers to keep the sector moving.”

Noting efforts by the government to address teachers’ shortage, Obaseki said, “The EdoSTAR programme was started to discontinue the situation where just anybody teaches our children rather than trained teachers.

“Today we have 4,500 fellow star teachers and we pay them N40,000 and observe them before finally recruiting them into the mainstream of the education sector. We will continue to address the issue of insufficient teachers in our schools.”

On his part, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUJ), Edo State Chapter, Bernard Gbenga, said the World Teachers Day celebration is set aside yearly to celebrate, appreciate, recognize, and reward teachers for their contributions to the education sector and development of society.

He further commended the governor for prioritising the welfare of the teachers in the State, and taking deliberate steps to revamp and strengthen the education sector.

…say devt of new State correctional centres ‘ll help to reform inmates, decongest facilities

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration will collaborate with the Chief Judge of Edo State and the judiciary to reduce the high numbers of awaiting trial inmates across correctional facilities in Edo State.

The governor said this when he received the leadership of Edo State Judiciary led by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, who was on a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki said, “We are concerned about the large number of awaiting trial inmates in our correctional centres and would like our Chief Judge to do something different and give assurance of comfort to these people and reduce the number of awaiting trial inmates. We are ready to put in resources to support you in achieving this.

“We are ready to work with you in taking advantage of the new constitutional arrangement to build our own correctional facilities in Edo State to support the work you are doing. We have acquired land and are working on the design as the Attorney General of the State will be meeting with you to show you the plan we have in place.”

Commending the Judiciary for its role in maintaining law and order in Edo State, the governor noted, “The executive arm of government in Edo State will ever be grateful to the judiciary. The judiciary has been one key basis for the success we have recorded as they have helped us sustain the rule of law.

“When we came in 2016, this was not the case. It was not uncommon to find non-state actors taking laws into their own hands, becoming laws unto themselves. Sometimes, it’s better for us to reflect on what the situation was less than eight years ago. With the help of the judiciary, we have been able to maintain law and order in Edo State.

“Nobody can challenge this administration or accuse us of taking steps that are extra-judicial in our dealings as we have abided by the law of the land, which is why we enjoy the level of peace and stability today in the State.”

The governor further stated, “We want to thank you for the adoption of technology. In the executive arm, we are enjoying the benefits of technology as our sessions are now virtual and all the memos and approvals I give are now through technology. We will continue to support you to embrace technology.

“Advancement in technology is not restricted to Benin City alone as we have laid 2,000km of fibre optic connections across the State as it will help us deliver high connectivity to all your Courts in Edo State. We are delivering technology to our schools, hospitals, and also consultants in America offering telemedicine services to our people.”

On his part, the Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, who commended the governor for his continuous support to the judiciary, said the visit is to invite the governor to the 2023/2024 Legal Year.

He said, “We want to thank you, Your Excellency, for the cooperation in the past year and solicit for more cooperation in the coming years. You have done so well in terms of infrastructural development as new Courts have been built and also support in improving the judiciary technology-wise.”
