Represented by the Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. Labaran Maku, the VP regretted that violence in the north had led to a devaluation of the elements of peace. He said, “Northern Nigeria is the most complex part of the country because of the numerous ethnic groups. There are places you go in the North where it is difficult for people to understand each other’s languages. In one local government area in Nasarawa State, there are more than 15 different ethnic groups, with nine different languages. The North is a complex entity which needs the intervention of our leaders. “The Sultan of Sokoto was able to rule the northerners because he brought everybody under one canopy. The challenge for all of us then is to have frank discussion with members of the community. If violence should persist in the North, it will take another 10-30 years for them to develop like other parts of the country. “We believe that the North is far behind other parts of the country in terms of development; if you go to the South-West and South-East, you will notice that there is homogeneity in terms of aggregate ethnic culture.” The VP regretted that the North, which used to be one of the most peaceful parts of the country where people show solidarity, no matter their tribes, religion and ethnic background, had now become notorious for crises. By Wole Ayodele A judge of the Taraba State High Court, Justice Philipus Andedur Wednesday took a swipe at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stressing that the anti-graft agency adopts selective Justice in the prosecution of suspects. He said arraigned suspects were perhaps unfortunate people, who probably were unable to interfere with investigations. The Judge, who disclosed this while hearing the case brought before his Court by the EFCC against Bello Ibrahim and Alhaji Sani A. Mazang, the former chairman and assistant secretary of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Yorro local government area of the state, said those who looted large sums of money were allowed to move freely, while those who stole small sums were prosecuted. The accused persons were arraigned before the Court on a two-count charge of Criminal Conspiracy contrary to Section 97 of the Penal Code Law and Criminal Breach of Trust by Public Servants Contrary to section 315 of the Penal Code Law. Others arraigned before the Court on same charges include the Mr. Phillip A. Timothy and Rimamsoshiti Bako, chairman and secretary of NULGE in Ussa local government area, while the Vice Chairman of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Suleiman Aliyu was also arraigned on a one-count charge of Criminal Breach of Trust by Public Servants Contrary to Section 315 of the Penal Code Law. Justice Andedur further disclosed that based on his conviction that the Commission was being selective in bringing people to Justice, he had opted to withdraw from handling the cases of the Commission and had protested against his inclusion among the Judges to handle its cases but was forced to stay on by the State’s Chief Judge who insist that his name had already been forwarded as one of the Judges to handle the cases. According to him “Those brought forward for trial by the Com mission are the unfortunate ones who probably are unable to interfere with their investigations. I don’t like selective Justice and that’s why I protested to the Chief Judge that I don’t want to handle EFCC cases but he told me my name has already been forwarded and until its deleted, I would remain one of the Judges to try the cases.” THISDAY NEWSPAPER |
