This shows that this strike is not ending soon, its rather unfortunate that both ASUU nd FG aren't concerned with welfare of the students |
FG condemns ASUU’s new demands on november 26, 2013 at 2:40 am in news By LAIDE AKINBOADE & PETER OKUTU ABUJA — The Federal Government, yesterday, condemned the new conditions which Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists must be met before the five-month old strike could be called off. The three conditions were payment of four months salaries, which accumulated during the period of the strike; immediate implementation of the N1.2 trillion offered by the government to public universities, starting with the release of N100 billion this year and the balance of N1.1 trillion to be spread over five years from 2014. The union also demanded that the salary arrears must not be paid in piecemeal. These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council, NEC, of the union that met in Kano on Friday. Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, condemned the new conditions but assured that he would present them before President Goodluck Jonathan. EBSU breaks ranks, recalls students Meanwhile, the management of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, EBSU, yesterday ordered lecturers and students of the institution to return to classes following the inability of ASUU to end its strike. A statement by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Sam Egwu, stressed that the institution had resolved to resume academic activities regardless of the ASUU-FG dispute, adding that academic activities would resume in all the campuses of the institution from today, Tuesday, November 26. EBSU chapter of ASUU however, said that lecturers would not return to classes until their demands were met in line with the position of its national body. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/fg-condemns-asuus-new-demands/ |

ASUU: 'We'll shut down Nigeria - Labour Thursday, October 10, 2013 advertisement ...Gives FG one-week ultimatum From PETRUS OBI, Enugu Labour activist and General Secretary, National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Joe Ajaero has given the Federal Government one week to resolve its differences with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) or cripple the country with the mother-of-all-strikes. Ajaero who was speaking during the opening of a training workshop organized for labour leaders in Enugu, threatened to ally with other unions across the country to join ASUU on a solidarity stike if the impasse persists. He said: "If ASUU issue is not addressed, we will shut this country alongside other unions. We will ally with other unions and make sure that nothing works in this country." Ajaero said government was being insensitive to the plight of Nigerian students because the children of the rich are studying outside the country. "This is not a strike based on demand, it's based on agreement. As government, you must honour your agreement. Here, there's no social security, the price of food is high, the same goes for electricity tariff. We are going to join our children to stay at home and let them run the system," he threatened. The labour leader said that the time has come to bar public office holders form sending their children to schools abroad or travel overseas for free treatment, noting that not until then, will government take the various institutions serious and put things the way they should be. Ajaero however, reassured electricity workers that the union would ensure that everybody receive their entitlements before the final handover to private investors and urged them to make good and judicious use of the money and not go on spending spree. "They are playing politics with us but all we have told them is to give us our entitlements and we will handover tomorrow. They said before the end of this week; if we don't see evidence of payment, we won't handover." According to him, the workshop is to prepare them for better management of the funds through skill acquisitions and entrepreneurial skills and urged them to take the workshop serious. http://odili.net/news/source/2013/oct/10/513.html |
Before BRT drivers kill us all by Bayo Olupohunda (bayoolupohunda@yahoo.com) "I will kill you and nothing will happen. Useless woman, you die you be saara'', the area-boy looking Bus Rapid Transit driver fumed and raged as the traffic slowed down at the Lekki Roundabout in Eti Osa, Lagos. The subject of his rage was a private vehicle driven by a lady who had out of panic swerved dangerously to avoid being rammed from behind by the bus. Earlier at the Ajah terminus of the BRT, I had watched in horror as the same red painted LAGBUS with serial number GO14 and registration number AGL173XA recklessly joined the expressway as he made to leave the terminus. With headlights flashing and horn blaring, horrified motorists frantically got out of its way to avoid being hit. The driver became even more reckless as he sped towards Obalende. Swerving dangerously from side to side with the horn blaring menacingly, he warned other motorists to steer clear of his way or risk being crushed. At a point in the journey, he peered out and hollered invectives at another motorist, ''Ma pa e danu'', which literally translates to (I will send you to your early grave). It was scary. The driver was simply uncontrollable and abusive. He kept raining invectives on any passenger who dared to challenge him on his irresponsible driving. In spite of several warnings by passengers and other motorists who were horrified at his reckless disregard for traffic regulations, he impudently drove on. His road rage created panic among motorists. With the manner the driver behaved on the afternoon of Monday, September 28, 2013, it was clear he was either under the influence of intoxicants or that he thought himself above the law. It was a most terrifying sight. At the Chevron toll point, the speed from Ajah was so much that he almost rammed the toll barrier. The alarm bell at the toll gate went off. But he hardly noticed. He simply increased his speed. Motorists who had noticed the long, monstrous vehicle barrelling at a top speed towards them cleared out of its way in panic. Then came the moment that shocked motorists, passengers and pedestrians alike. A female driver on the fast lane had been oblivious of the bus racing towards her. Then without notice, the BRT driver accelerated, and almost ran the woman over. The woman, out of fright, quickly swerved to the middle lane. It was a miracle that she did not cause multiple accidents. The driver levelled up with her car and let out unprintable rant at the hapless woman. It was the height of irresponsibility by a driver who was supposed to be aware of the importance of safety on our roads. Still he drove on, exhibiting more impudence towards Obalende. In Lagos, the menace of BRT bus drivers is fast becoming one of the major hazards that make driving in this mega city a dangerous experience. But the recklessness displayed by the driver narrated above will pale into insignificance when compared to the danger their fleet constitutes to road users. Still on the same Lekki-Epe Expressway, on a day that it rained cat and dog in the metropolis, another BRT vehicle with serial number FO15 and number plate XD 773 LSD suddenly emerged from nowhere and blocked the entire stretch of road linking Badore and Lekki- Epe Expressway. The bus, driven by one of the many reckless drivers in the BRT fleet had rammed a bus on the side damaging it in the process. Then, an argument soon snowballed into fisticuffs between the two drivers. The policemen at the scene of the accident wasted no time in blaming the BRT bus driver for reckless driving and for failing to observe the right-of-way. The traffic infraction and the argument that followed soon resulted into a major hold-up that lasted well over an hour on the busy intersection. But the encounter was not surprising. It fits conveniently into the recklessness that has come to define the operation of Bus Rapid Transit in Lagos. Across the city, BRT drivers have become notorious for their speed and impatience with passengers and motorists. They consider other road users as flies who can be crushed or maimed at will. With the frequent road rage displayed on Lagos roads by BRT drivers, it will not be long before avoidable carnage starts to happen if their recklessness is not curtailed. Recently, on the same Lekki-Epe Expressway, an elderly woman narrowly escaped being run over by a LAGBUS. In her attempt to disembark from the bus, the driver suddenly stepped on the accelerator. He complained that the woman was too slow to alight from the bus. Due to the sudden jolt, the woman missed her step and fell face down on the hard road. The driver drove on unperturbed. She narrowly missed being crushed by the huge tyres of the bus. Even when other passengers rebuked the driver, he remained adamant. For most Lagos residents, that type of encounter has become a daily occurrence. At the Victoria Garden City roundabout, another BRT driver caused a multiple accident the other day. Coming with full speed from CMS, he arrived at the roundabout only to realise too late that he had to slow down. But it was too late. He cannoned into a car in his path. This caused a ricochet as the car also rammed into another car in front of it. While the chaos lasted, the reckless BRT driver tried to justify his action. He claimed to be in the right. On another experience, yet another LAGBUS driver engaged in an open fight with a private car driver. He had been hell-bent on not ceding the right of way to the other motorist. In his attempt to forcefully bulldoze the bus through, he caused a massive dent on the car's rear. This action infuriated other motorists. But rather than being contrite, the driver stuck to his guns and became violently abusive. The ensuing argument later snowballed into a physical combat. As the fight raged, the police only stood to watch the chaos. Reports have continued to detail the atrocities of BRT drivers. A soldier was reportedly crushed to death a few weeks ago by a BRT bus in the city. On the Ikorodu-Ketu road where you have one of the highest concentrations of BRT buses, they are known for excessive speed, traffic breaches and constant road rage. For the Lagos motorist, the fear of BRT drivers is the beginning of wisdom. From Ikorodu to Mile 12, down to Obalende, the story is the same. Apart from the frequent violations of all known traffic regulations by BRT drivers, there is also the issue of maintenance. Governor Babatunde Fashola rightly expressed concern about the state of the buses and the attitude of drivers at a meeting with the operators recently. Many of the buses have become rickety and run down. This is due to the reckless handling of the buses and poor maintenance culture. Four years after its introduction, the BRT project is fast becoming a nightmare to Lagosians. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority should be alive to its responsibilities. As the regulatory body, LAMATA should have functioning complaints and monitoring units that will check the activities of the drivers and staff under the fleet of LAGBUS and those operated by the National Union of Road Transport Workers Cooperative. Erring drivers found to contravene the state traffic laws should be punished. The BRT project is too important to be allowed to die. http://odili.net/news/source/2013/oct/10/821.html |

siddiq202: If this new report is true, then the punch reporter needs to be questioned for lying against the Commissioner (Perhaps he/she has hidden agenda). If not, since there are still consultations on the matter, the Commissioner needs a query! |
Lagos Commissioner for Information Just claimed that Punch Newspapers lied on the LagosHijabBan in a Press Release. He claimed that the Lagos State Government has not banned the use of hijab in secondary schools. The Lagos State government has denied banning use of hijab in public schools, as the issue is still being looked into with a view to taking a broad-based stand on it. Muslims protest punishment of pupils for wearing hijab In a reaction to a report by Punch newspaper which credited the Commissioner for Education, Olayinka Oladunjoye, with writing off the possibility of allowing hijab in public schools, the state government rejected the report as incorrect, sensational and out of context. The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba, said the government was still making wide consultations on the issue and will only come up with a position after exhausting all the avenues that will allow for a peaceful resolution of the matter. To avoid a needless heightening of tension, the Commissioner advised the people of the state, particularly Muslim faithful, not to allow people with diabolic intentions to trivialise the issue of sustaining the peaceful co-existence of the diverse groups in the state. He also urged media practitioners to avoid sensationalism and inflammatory statement in their reportage of government activities so as not to create unnecessary confusion and misrepresentation of government position. According to him, what Mrs Olayinka explained at the briefing was that the government had held meetings with some key stakeholders and would still consult widely before taking a position, saying “it will therefore be premature and pre-emptive to say that government has rejected the use of hijab in public schools in Lagos”. The Commissioner added that it was strange that the explanation of a public officer about on-going effort to resolve an issue could be misconstrued to mean that government had taken a negative position on such an issue. He thanked Lagos residents for tolerating one another by living peacefully without playing up divisive interests and advised them to continue to be their brothers’ keepers. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/05/20/weve-not-banned-use-of-hijab-in-public-schools-lagos-government/ |
