Good evening house, please one of my student is an aspirant of UI,his preferred course is Bsc mathematics. But when I checked online, the subject combination 2as English, Mathematics, physics, chemistry.Other websites showed English, Mathematics, one of Physics and Chemistry, and Further mathematics or Biology.I have tried to reach the Uni through their email, but I have gotten no reply. The main problem is the fact that this particular student of mine is poor in chemistry.
So I need to confirm if it is compulsory he registers chemistry as part of his UTME subject or if there is a substitute for chemistry. He Intends registering on Wednesday.

Good morning,
If you are in Ibadan, I'll advise that you go to UI admission office. You'll get first hand information about the subject combination there.

Fellow Nairalanders,

I'm pleased to wish you a Happy New Year!!

2024 will be the year of Nairaland's resurgence. I will face Nairaland squarely like I used to before the discouraging Data Loss Incident of 2014. I will hire more hands to help us to improve Nairaland.

The problems of Nairaland that we should have solved years ago will be solved.

* We will defeat tribalists, trolls, & spammers.
* We will complete our advertising platform.
* We will improve the UI and UX.
* Home page topics will be educative & fresh.
* We will reverse the anti-women trends.

However, I must warn you that things will get worse before they get better. Please stand with us and fight for us as Nairaland faces the tough challenges of 2024, which have already started.

Happy New Year and thanks for using Nairaland!

Hmm.....
Thank you for this. This is great sir.
I've read your write up, digest it and have a proper rethink.
.
The thing on ground now is that, going to study that engineering will be a hell for me as I would likely take much responsibility by myself and this will badly affect my grade and there my affect my chance in the labour market.
.
Now my plan now, is to drop out. Go to street, hustle and get much money, applied for next jamb, choose nursing.. but then I would have get much more money to fend myself through.
And focus squarely on finishing the bsc nursing... Not that I don't want to continue with the engineering but I'm considering the obstacle ahead. Even, I might reach some stage that I would be forced to drop out if financial crises arises when studying engineering. So for this reason, I thought it that I should pause for now, gather money, and then re-enroll...
And mind you, I have no academic challenge. I mean I'm brilliant to ace through jamb/p.jamb to get in to nursing.
.
Or whats your own thought on this
Should I strive through it, or I should just step down and go for nursing... And again I'm not choosing any of the course becos of passion but because of future security. So I have equal passion for all the course. I don't prefer anyone than the other. I'm good both at craming and calculation. So, I have no issue with passion at all.
.

Well done sir,

One of the challenges of quitting while you've not gotten the desired course is the psychological trauma that may follow such action.

Life is full of many variables. How will you fell if something went wrong (maybe from your end or not from your end) and you didn't get the admission next year.

How will you react to it psychologically?
How do you plan to sail such situation through?

I think the best thing is to strive to get the desired course without quitting the present one. Then when you've gotten your desired course, you quit the present one.

Also, you will have to read for Jamb and you need to score very very high to get for your desired.
So, it will be like you are complicating the issue if you quit the current one, start working and then hope to prepare for Jamb and post-utme and still score very very high in the exams.

Once you get the admission next year, you can use the small time in between admission and resumption to look for small money to start with.
Then you continue to rough it with the money you are getting from home (after that you can look if there's a way you can then be getting a passive income.)

God will help you through.

Hmmm... Thanks for this sir.
.
At first, engineering is not glamorous has we painted it. The fee to sponsor oneself for msc in western countries is even enough to to establish a big business. Where would one get that money?
And the easiest route one can take is through scholarship, but getting that Is like a camel passing through a needle.
.
Infact to be factual, there is nothing available for engineering student in the labour market, except if that student can be patient to wait for like 5 years searching for job... This sucks me whenever I think about it. I felt depressed and discouraged at it.... I ever regret picking engineering at such a critical moment of life.
.
As for rn nursing, I don't care if my junior of less than 10yrs having bsc is promoted over me. Inasmuch as I am employed and I'm payed I don't care about anybody position. My aim is to get little experience and Japa.
But what scares me about the rn nursing is that are they gainfully employed like the bsc nursing? If yes then I don't care about position. I dont even want to care about what people say again. I see all those saying as deceit and poisons. That was how I was told then that nursing is a no go area that they are slaves to doctors. That no matter the year they spend in the hospital, a junior doctor will be ranked above them... What's my business with that?
This is how they polited my heart and make me loose the opportunity of choosing nursing then.
.
Now am after getting employed and paid well. Am less concern about what superiority has to do. Inasmuch as my aim is to japa. I don't care about superiority.
.
And nursing itself is a skill, you can decide to be independent and set up your own clinic, if you have the capital.
But with a b.eng, na only theory you will be thought, no practical knowledge... Engineering students are fashioned to seek for job but never to be independent. Except those that want to establish outside the scope of engineering.... engineering Is a pure scam.
.
And wait, instead of the years I will go do master, why can't I use it to go for bsc nursing once and for all.
And by the way if I finished the master and come here for msc, the inferiority complex will set in as I will always be a subordinate to PhD holders. Then there will be another quest for schooling again. That is too much for my age.
.
And for learning skill, I've been doing that. But they are easier said than done. Blogging, freelancing, web design or whatever are all saturated too.
.
If rn nursing might not provide me a job. Then I think I would rather go for bsc nursing instead of wasting my time on engineering course that will add no value nor skill on me. Only to be solving complex engineering maths and mechanics that add no value or money to life.
.
I must confessed. The fact is that I'm confused and totally depressed. I hardly sleep these days, I keep thinking and th of way out...
Sometimes i look at my junior junior who learn handwork doing well and making cool cash and here I am that I can't even get myself a decent dress... I cant continue the way. I'm just confused!!!!

Hello sir, reading your ordeal as regards admission to your preferred course, I will like to drop this:

I hope you find something to pick from it.

Seeing your age at present and the psychological state that you are as you've said here, it will not be advisable that you directly quit your present course. Quitting it while you have not gotten your desired course can make you to be further confused and depressed...

Here is it, your best option is still medicine or nursing.
With either of the two, your age will most likely not affect your chance of getting job after your study.

But this is what you can do, while still in engineering you can register for next year Jamb and pick either Medicine or Nursing in Federal University (Federal university because the financial implications will not be much, but if there is still money, you can pick state university). Then prepare to score very very high in the jamb and study the admission structure of the school that you apply for and prepare well for post-utme and pray too.

Also, because of time you can consider the SON option too, but please make sure you think through and think right before you make the final decision.

Though federal school may seems slow because of ASUU strike but in the long run the years will pass. Except if you can afford private or state university.

Once, you are able to secure admission for your preferred course you will most likely forget the pain of the past or the pain will not have effect even if you still remember it.

At this point, you don't need to be disturbed, depressed or confused. You need to make sure you think straight so that you can make the best choice.

My own case,
I finished secondary school in 2012, I have to spent some years to have my O'level results and I finally get admission to U I with 2018 JAMB. (Finished secondary school in 2012 and gain admission with 2018 JAMB)

I am currently studying MBBS in U I.

Go with both. The verification seems like its just a mere formality. I have a course mate that didn't attend our second verification because she couldn't get her results on time. She was still paid. The payment even came before verification. Just go with both.

Hello ma,
As a 300 level medical student without 200 level CGPA (Because there's no CGPA in medical school), can one use one's 100 level CGPA as current CGPA or what should one do in such situation?

Thanks.

Hi Oluwanimi. Good evening, you asked for advice based on admission experience in those schools mentioned. I know of OAU (cuz I had my first degree there) & UI. Two very transparent but not so easy to get into. Any aspirant with solid utme score and choose any of the two (OAU /UI) for MBBS. If you have a flawless O'levels, it'll boost your chances in OAU since the school still factor that in during aggregate calculation.
I've not sat for UI post utme before but there are solid tutorials in Ibadan that boasts of aspirants who aced the exam like it was nothing. So if you're considering UI, first have a mad ass utme score, then find your way to Ibadan, make enquiries about those tutorial centers and work your ass off studying. I can bet it that you'll make the right score to beat UI cut off. I'm not guaranteeing you admission but I'm here to tell you that I know a few medical students in UI who got in without knowing anybody or paying anybody. Just their results and since UI always publishes her cut off, so you can be guaranteed that if you meet her cut off you'll get in.
As regards OAU, well, she's like UI - transparent but not so simple. OAU post utme is 40% of the whole score, Utme is 50%, while WAEC is 10%. So even without sitting for the post utme yet. If you add your utme + WAEC aggregates together, you should have a maximum of 60%. So calculate your jamb score and your WAEC aggregates first, anything you get, subtract it from OAU 78.8 (that's the merit score for the ongoing 2021/2022 admission excersice). The remainder should be what you'd be aiming for in OAU post utme.
I have a friend who had 327 in utme and B parallel in his O'levels. Like that he already has (40.875 + 9) = 49.875. When he subtracted it from the last cut off, he needed to score at least 30/40 in OAU post utme to beat the merit cut of. And as it would turn out, he actually scored 30/40 in the exam. He was above this year's cut of by just 1 point if we use merit and by 3 points if we use catchment area. OAU post utme is not simple and at the same time, it's not the hardest exam in the world. In fact, I felt the last conducted one was quite easy as many that I know scored well.
UI still has a pending year in ground. Her fresher's would resume most likely maybe March next year. So if you're choosing them you'd resume by 2024. OAU on the other hand has a stable and balanced academic set. The 2021/2020 session is set to begin by January so if you're picking them now, you should expect to resume by maybe early 2023 or so. (all things equal without strike.)
The major issue right now is you acing your utme. Once you have a very good score in jamb, it'll make the list of institutions available for you to pick form longer. Different school use different admission methods. Have a good jamb score. Do your research about your school of choice. And apply to where you have the greatest chance of entry. That's the trick in few simple lines. All the best

Well-done for the analysis chief. Actually U I didn't have an outstanding session again. The ones offered admission recently will resume next year. So, if he writes UTME and gain admission into U I, he will resume in 2023. Other things being equal.

The reason why U I didn't have an outstanding set (pending year) again is because, she didn't admit any student from this year UTME.

Good morning everyone. I've just been offered admission to study Physiology in UI . I wanted to go for MBBS but my Jamb Scores were always too low , so I applied for Physiology on my 3rd Jamb . I'm hoping to switch to MBBS , Physiotherapy , or Medlab when entering 200L . From the advice I've gotten , I need a very High GPA . So please can anyone recomend textbooks for me to read or even just tell me the courses i'll take at 100L so I can read hard .

For 100L.

Physics 102, 103, 104, 105 and 118
Chemistry 156, 126, 176 and 191
Zoo 114, 116, 112, 115, 117 and 118
Bot. 141
CSC (computer) 101
Ges 107, 108 and 101

That's the courses for physiology 100 level .........
For phys, Chem and Zoo, the last course for each that I listed is practical.

Work extra hard in 100 level to be able to cross in 200Level and also pray there is space in the department that you want to cross to.

Will I ever become a doctor?

A medical doctor, yes you can become one.

There are many testimony of people who have had series of temporary defeats in their pursuit of becoming a medical doctor but they eventually become medical doctor in the long run.

While there are others who get in to university for MBBS immediately after their secondary school.

The key is if you want to become one, try to pay the price. Irrespective of the categories you belong to.

If you really want it, you will get it if you don't quit.

To answer your number 5, the only reason why I think MBBS is anywhere better than BDS is that, you have the opportunity to change specialisation with MBBS.

But, aside that, there is no difference between this two courses with respect to prospect and relevance.

BDS even have greater prospect than MBBS, because very few people are into it, and you can easily have your clinic immediately you are done.

You are regarded more of a surgeon than a physician unlike MBBS graduate.

I will choose BDS over MBBS, but the only reason I prefer MBBS is that it give flexibility to choose your specialty of interest, as we do develop new interest as we go deep into medicine.

I used to love Neurosurgery.

I used to love cardio-thoracic surgery.

I will even choose Obesteric and Gynecology over them now.

I never love paediatric, but I might later love it and venture into it. If there is any advantage MBBS have over BDS, this is the only thing.

Good afternoon sir.

An aspirant who got 210 in jamb, changed from mbbs to biochemistry, and I think my chances of getting admission is low. Now I changed my mind to study computer science instead. That's why I am asking. So how do I go about it?

You'll need mathematics in Jamb in computer science which I believe you'll not do in Jamb for MBBS.

This case seems complicated, you can try and come down to U I admission office if you stay around Ibadan.
But I don't know if Anthropology will allow you to cross to computer science. Why not chemistry, mathematics or physics.......
