The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wants the National Assembly to investigate alleged treasury looting by the President Muhammadu Buhari since assuming office in 2015. A statement by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the Buhari regime looted N26.7 trillion, $322 million and N500 billion. It urged the National Assembly to protect the interest of millions of suffering Nigerians by invoking its powers under sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to recover the funds alleged to have been looted. See full text below. The Peoples Democratic Party charges the National Assembly to, upon resumption, assert itself and accede to demands by Nigerians to investigate the widespread insecurity, economic depression, treasury looting, abuse of office and violations that stamped the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration since May 2015. The PDP urges the federal legislature to protect the interest of millions of suffering Nigerians by invoking its powers under sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to recover the over N14 trillion stolen by government officials and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last four years. The PDP holds that a legislative action has become imperative, as the Buhari-presidency has failed to give cogent explanation on the alleged looting of over N9 trillion through sleazy oil contracts as detailed in the leaked NNPC memo; a situation that directly points to officials’ culpability. Nigerians also want the National Assembly to investigate the issues surrounding the reported stealing of N1.1 trillion worth of crude oil using 18 unregistered companies, as well as the alleged looting of over N2.6 trillion in shady oil subsidy regime. The PDP urges the National Assembly to also investigate the alleged siphoning of $322m repatriated funds as well as the trillions of naira stolen under shady projects such as the ‘tradermoni’ project, among others. The party notes that only recently, the wife of Mr. President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, raised the alarm that over N500 billion meant for poverty alleviation under the APC-led government did not get to the designated beneficiaries. The PDP holds that the humongous looting under the Buhari-administration is directly responsible for the economic hardship Nigerians have been subjected to in the last four years. Our party, therefore, urges the National Assembly to save the nation by recovering and channeling the stolen funds towards the welfare of Nigerians, while the culprits face the law. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/07/buhari-regime-looted-n267-trillion-322.html

The former national legal adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Muiz Banire has warned the party to brace up for real test in 2023 when President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term in office ends, adding that the cracks in the leadership circle of the party will make it difficult for it to survive. The three-time commissioner in Lagos State stated this on Thursday at the 2019 opening ceremony of United Action for Change, which was held in Oshodi, Lagos State. Speaking on the theme “The Nigerian Youth,” Banire advised both the general public and the leadership of the party on how to safeguard its future, adding that its future lies on how the elders treat the youth. “It is the president that is holding the party together. When he leaves office, the party will scatter and that is when we will face a real test,” he said. “We have people who run the party as if it is a union. Others think the party is their family meeting and want to dictate what will go. If the party fails, the young generation will have to start afresh.” He advised Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to put plans in place to start building a decent generation of youths, adding that the practice where governors install their cronies in local government elections should be abolished. “Since the local government wants to be autonomous, it will be better for the federal government to also see the elections of these local governments. Local government elections are supposed to be breeding ground for future politicians who should be mostly youths, but governors have turned it to selective posts,” he stated. He also advised youths on how to overcome intimidating old political moneybags: “If you people can gather and have a representative; if you can look for how to be relevant to your immediate environment; and if you can say no to the pressure of corruption, maybe then, you will have a chance to become leaders. These elders can’t make a policy that will benefit you, even I can’t in totality make a policy that will benefit you, it is you who should be making policy for yourself.” Otunba Olufemi Okenla, Chief Executive Officer, Ibis Hotel, who was also the chairman of the planning committee, enjoined youths to make the most of the three-day camping seminar. “This is the fourth edition which shows that there is progress. We are trying to build leaders who will be selfless and diligent in their services. The main aim of this gathering is not for you to meet people, but how you can use the person you are meeting here for good for yourself and another,” he stated. Dignitaries scheduled to appear at the three-day seminar included Mr Gabriel Ogbechie, Group General Manager, Rainoil, Dr Garba Abari, Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA) and Mrs Ibidun Ighodalo, wife of respected Lagos Pastor, Ituah Ighodalo among others. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/apc-to-face-real-test-in-2023-banire.html

The Bank’s Director, Corporate Communications Department, Isaac Okorafor disclosed that the intervention was for requests in the agricultural and raw materials sectors, adding that the Chinese Yuan, on the other hand, was for Renminbi-denominated Letters of Credit. There is a strong rumour that the Distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu who has been in the senate for 20 years, wants to run for governorship election of Enugu state come 2023. Ekweremadu is from Mpu, Aninri local govt in Enugu west senatorial district. Enugu west senatorial zone has 5 local govts - Aninri, Awgu, Oji River, Udi and Ezeagu. Zoning has been entrenched in Enugu state, and Ike Ekweremadu should not allow some jobbers deceive him. His Excellency, Barr Sullivan Iheanacho Chime is from the same senatorial zone with Ekweremadu, he was in power for 8 years thereby serving the 8 year term of their senatorial zone. The zoning began in 1999. Dr Chimaroke Nnamani from Enugu east senatorial zone (Nkanu) did 8 years and handed over to Sullivan who took the turn of Enugu west senatorial zone. Sullivan Chime in the spirit of zoning handed over to Nsukka zone in which the incumbent gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi will complete their 8 year tenure by 2023. By 2023, it should be the turn of ndi Nkanu. The rumour of Ike Ekweremadu plotting to run for Guber in 2023 will fail. If he must be governor, he should wait till 2031, when it will be the turn of his zone. Meanwhile, Ike Ekweremadu has been in govt since 1999. Attempting to destabilize the zoning system having lost out at the senate leadership after 20 years wont be good for his ending career. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/senator-ike-ekweremadu-set-for.html

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, of persecuting Muslim students in the institution. This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by the Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola. “Adeleke University is a serial violator of Allah-given fundamental rights of Muslim students. This institution forces Muslim students to attend church on Sundays. It makes it mandatory for students living in the hostel to attend church every Wednesday and Saturday”, it read. “The practice of any other faith on campus except Christianity is banned. Muslim students must not be seen observing Salat. Hijab is a taboo in Adeleke University. Yet all these Islamophobic practices are smartly hidden from prospective students of the institution until they have paid the exorbitant school fees and can no longer withdraw.” MURIC called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to come to the rescue of Muslim students in Adeleke University. “In particular, we invite NUC to take a look at the students’ handbook of this institution, especially pages 7, 49, 50, 56 and 60. These pages, to our mind, contain rules that infringe on the religious freedom of Muslim students. As a regulating body, NUC has a duty to intervene in this matter as part of its oversight function on Nigeria’s universities. “Such intervention is necessary at this juncture to enhance quality control. We remind NUC that man is body, soul and spirit. These three organs must function without hinderance for students to perform maximally. As things stand today, Muslim students of Adeleke University have been deprived of the spiritual component of their humanity. We therefore call on NUC to investigate this issue as a matter of urgency. Religious repression is a potential threat to peace, law and order. “MURIC is aware that such practices of religious intolerance exist in a few other private universities. We therefore advise Muslim parents and Muslim students to take necessary precaution. They should investigate very well before picking universities of interest. “Many private universities do not bear Christian names but they pursue Christian evangelical goals. Worse still, they lack the spirit of tolerance. Muslim candidates who have already chosen private universities where they are likely to become victims of Islamophobia are, therefore, advised to apply for a change of university before it is too late.” https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/adeleke-university-accused-of-forcing.html

The Young Progressive Party (YPP)’s Senator-elect, Mr Ifeanyi Ubah, on Saturday, disclosed that he is not supporting Sen. Ahmad Lawan’s Senate presidential bid for any political gain. Ubah, who will be representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the 9th Senate, gave the clarification while speaking with newsmen shortly after the party’s stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja. Senator Andy Uba (APC), who represented Anambra South in the 8th Senate, his younger brother, Chris Uba (PDP), had filed petitions challenging the outcome of the election at the tribunal. According to the YPP senator-elect, the insinuation that he was backing Lawan in order to secure his election victory at tribunal was untrue. ”From day one, I have always have my position. I have consulted with my party, we looked at his pedigree. He was the Senate leader in the 8th Senate and politics is about risk. We looked at his resume and we found out that he is the right person to support. ”Even if he never makes it, let us assume but that we don’t pray for, I will still work with him. I am the only YPP senator-elect. So I need to form alliance in the Senate and that is what politics is all about,” he said. Ubah said his support for the All Progressives Congress preferred candidate was a universal practice, even in the United States (US). He urged the lawmakers-elect to ensure that the election was conducted in a peaceful, free and fair manner. ”We want to have a rancour-free legislature in the ninth Senate. And that is why YPP has a position on whom we are supporting. The person who will at least give us that value we are seeking for. My words to Nigerians out there is that they should watch the performance of the YPP in the ninth Senate,” he said. According to him, a journey of a million mile starts with a step and I believe that ninth Senate will be a very good platform for us to demonstrate our competence. Ubah, who said he was proud to be the pioneer YPP lawmaker, restated that he had no plan to dump the party. He said YPP was a party to watch in the next election. ”The takeaway from this meeting is that we are strategising on how to takeover and everybody should know that YPP is a party to watch in the next election,” he said. The National Chairman of the party, Comrade Emmanuel Amakiri, who noted the economic challenges confronting Nigerians, said YPP comprised a new breed of politicians that is ready to bring innovative ideas into Nigerian politics. https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2019/06/08/9th-senate-why-im-supporting-lawan-ifeanyi-ubah/

The Lagos State chapter of Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) on Wednesday urged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reintroduce the monthly sanitation exercise in the state in order to improve the environment. The state Chairman of the party, Mr Olumide Oguntoyinbo, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. NAN reports that Sanwo-Olu, during a visit to the Olusosun dumpsite on Friday had said government would seek the views of residents on whether or not the exercise should be reintroduced. . His predecessor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, had cancelled the exercise, which restricted movement of residents from 7 a.m. to 10.a.m. on the last Saturday of every month to enable them clean their surroundings Ambode had claimed that a megacity like Lagos could not afford to halt economic activities for three hours and that the movement restriction was unnecessary. Oguntoyinbo told NAN that the cancellation of the exercise had thrown up many environmental issues, saying that Sanwo-Olu should not waste time in bringing it back. He said if the state must reclaim its lost reputation of being one of the cleanest, all residents must encourage the state government to bring back the exercise. “Lagos is too dirty now; we should not deceive ourselves. Everywhere you go, all you see is filth. “This problem started when the last administration cancelled the monthly sanitation exercise and reversed some other good environmental policies of the state . “So there is an urgent need to restore Lagos to the clean days. Gov. Sanwo-Olu should bring back the sanitation exercise to promote the culture of cleanliness to improve the environment. “All residents of the state should encourage the governor in whatever efforts he is making to make the state clean again,’’ he said. Oguntoyinbo urged the state government to urgently clear all illegal dumpsites across the state to prevent outbreak of diseases. He also said a good number of major drains and canals had been blocked with refuse, urging the government to clear them to avoid flooding. Oguntoyinbo warned residents to stop illegal dumping of refuse and open defecation, saying such practices posed health and environmental dangers. The PPA Chairman urged Sanwo-Olu to be very firm in the implementation of environmental laws as that would help in achieving a clean state. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/ppa-urges-sanwo-olu-to-reintroduce.html

Early this morning according to the leader of cattle breeders in Nigeria. He expressed his shock on how serious the governors of South East has been in their refusal to give them their lands for cattle rearing. Leader of the group, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, in a statement issued in Abuja , said the decision was surprising to them considering the cordial relationship that had existed in the zone between the group and the five state government. He said that, since they are claiming to be stubborn, and had refused to give us their lands in peace, it will be taken by force and entire south east will be raided and taken over by herdsmen. He said Miyetti Allah had never failed to appreciate the commitment of the host governors in ensuring their safety, even in their rational insistence that their people must not infringe on the rights of indigenous farmers to cultivate and harvest their crops without any hindrance. He also mentioned that it's an insult that the Igbos do not value anything that has to do with cow only their business and money and yet they eat cow meats. Siddiki said: “It is evident that our organization’s advocacy for peaceful coexistence among indigenous farmers and herdsmen is increasingly making successes in the South East. “This explains our surprise at the latest stand of the governors, which, if implemented, will not only frustrate our people from carrying out our legitimate livestock rearing business in this part of the country, but might be suggestive of a kind of suspicion that might undermine the mutuality of the claim of brotherhood. “We are mindful if the various negotiations and consultations still going on in respect of the contentious issues of ranching, colonies and grazing areas across the country, we are hopeful that these issues are considered dispassionately in the interest of Nigeria and the generality of it’s citizens. “We of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders of Nigeria, south east zone, consequent upon the existing understanding we enjoy with our hosts, and in response to the latest stand by Full details at https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/south-east-will-boil-any-moment-from.html

The sum of £211,000,000 (N81.9bn) has been seized from a Jersey bank account that belonged to a former Nigerian dictator, General Sani Abacha. Abacha was a Nigerian army officer and de facto president between 1993 until his death in 1998. He laundered money through the US into the Channel Islands and now that money has been recovered. The UK Metro is reporting that the money was put in accounts held in Jersey by Doraville Properties Corporation, a British Virgin Islands company. The Newspaper said the money was now being held by the government until authorities in Jersey, the US and Nigeria come to an agreement on how it should be distributed. Any money that Jersey does keep will be put into the Criminal Confiscation Fund, which is used to pay for a variety of projects. In the past, the fund had been used for the new police station and developments at La Moye Prison. It is expected that even more money held by Doraville is likely to be seized and paid into the Civil Asset Recovery Fund in the future. Case timeline In 2014, at the request of the US authorities, the Island’s Attorney General applied for, and the Royal Court granted, a restraining order over the Jersey bank account balance of Doraville. The purpose of the restraining order was to preserve the money until a final civil asset recovery order could be registered in the Royal Court. Doraville applied to the Royal Court for the restraint order to be discharged, but the Royal Court dismissed the application in 2016. Then in 2017, Doraville challenged the Royal Court’s decision, taking the case to Jersey’s Court of Appeal. That challenge was again rejected. Finally, following the decision of Jersey’s Court of Appeal, Doraville made an application to appeal against the restraint order before the Privy Council – Jersey’s ultimate appellate court. In February 2018, the Privy Council announced its rejection of this final legal challenge. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/breaking-uk-seizes-abachas-n82bn-from.html

Beneficiaries of the National Social Investment Programmes (N-SIPs) in Kano, on Monday came out in large numbers at Murtala Mohammed Library to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo over their success at the 2019 polls. The special prayer organized by the beneficiaries themselves witnessed a large turnout of people led by different Islamic scholars, officials of the programme and thousands of beneficiaries. Shortly after the prayer session, participants at the event separately paid tributes to President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo for the success of the programmes, urging them to sustain the schemes. Speaking to newsmen on behalf of beneficiaries at the prayer event, Mr. Maitala Bawa, thanked the President and the Vice President for the introduction and implementation of the National Social Investment Programmes, acknowledging the impact it has had on many individuals, families and communities. He said that the various components namely: N-Power job scheme, the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, Conditional Cash Transfer, and the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) schemes – TraderMoni, MarketMoni and FarmerMoni, have been very helpful to many poor Nigerians. Mr. Bawa also commended the efforts of the coordinators at all levels and urged them not to rest on their oars in the Next Level of the Buhari administration. Earlier at the event, Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SIPs, said “the National Social Investment Programmes have impacted many lives across the country and plans are underway to improve on the gains recorded in the past three years”. Over 180,000 traders are currently benefitting from the Trader Moni programme and we are hoping to engage more people in the state.” “In the next four years we will escalate the numbers especially for N-power we are recruiting another 120, 000 or more. We know that Kano being the largest state is going to receive the lion share as well. “To round-up our programme for the conditional cash transfer from 15 local government, we are going to spread to all 44 local government areas of the state this year to make sure that every nook and cranny of Kano that are devastated with poverty are touched. “The TraderMoni too is going to be increased, because we intend to give another 2 million people loans this year,” he added. Ahmed urged all beneficiaries, including those in Kano, to pray for the success of the programme in the Next Level and for President Buhari, noting that “the President needed prayers, not only for good health, but for divine guidance and protection to succeed in his second term”. According to him, “Nigerians, irrespective of their religion or political inclination must continue to pray for the President, noting that the nation is undergoing positive changes under his leadership.” https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/kano-thousands-of-sip-beneficiaries.html

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday handed over 35 brand new buses to civil servants for transportation to and from work. The governor had on resumption of office on Thursday promised to refleet the Central Bus System, CBS, the body handling transportation for civil servants, as almost all buses being used to convey civil servants to and from work were dilapidated. Four days after the promise, Sanwo-Olu handed over the buses to the CBS on Monday at the Car Park, Lagos Government Secretariat, Alausa, in Ikeja, Lagos. Head of Service, HoS, Hakeem Muri-Okunola commissioned the new buses and thanked the governor for catering for the welfare of about 120,000 workers. Muri-Okunola stated that in line with Sanwo-Olu’s manifesto, he made good his promise by refleeting the entire CBS. He said it was now a clarion call on civil servants to rededicate themselves to effectively service delivery. “You have to start doing your job well. If you have been doing your job well, it is a call to be excellent in service delivery. “You cannot rely on bureaucracy but getting the job done, be ICT compliance. Join hands with the governor to build Lagos,” he said. Muri-Okunola added the CBS drivers would have to undergo training to be able to drive the new buses as they were technical to operate than other buses. He said the drivers would have to go to the Lagos State Drivers Institute, LASDRI for retraining and re-certification before they could drive the buses, saying that by next Monday, the buses would be put to full use. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/sanwo-olu-hands-over-35-new-buses-to.html

President Muhammadu Buhari has been advised not to rely on his political appointees if he must succeed in his second term. Prophet Sam Olu Alo, founder of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Grace of God Prayer Mountain, Adamimogo Outreach, who gave the warning, said the president would be committing great error if he would put his trust on his aides. Instead, the cleric admonished Buhari to seek the face of God to be able to deliver on his electioneering promises to Nigerians. Prophet Olu-Alo poke in Lagos during the dedication of a new church auditorium tagged ‘Power House ‘ built by his Ministry at Baoku Close, Ogombo, Ajah-Abraham Adesanya Ajah. The Ekiti born cleric urged Buhari to put all his hope in God, who has the capacity to turn around the fortunes of any nation. Alo said Nigerian leaders must learn how to dedicate their leadership to God like the Biblical David, saying this remained the best way for their dreams and policies to be realised. “President Buhari should not believe in his own capacity and that of his appointees to be able to deliver for Nigerians. “He must consider God, who made him President after fourth attempt and at old age as very important for him to be successful,” he advised. Alo said the church was established to propagate the gospel and increase the frontiers of spiritual rebirth for Nigerians. He added that the country needs God’s intervention at this period to be able to overcome its multi -faceted challenges. Those who ministered at the event included Pastor Gideon Obiwale, Chairman, CAC, Osogbo DCC; Pastor Olu Eyebiokin, Superintendent, Agege DCC; Pastor J. Adelakun (aka Ayewa), Evang. Esther Igbekele and Evang. Bisi Alawiye-Aluko, a gospel musician. Alo said his ministry was not anchored on money and wealth acquisition, but to spread the gospel for people to be saved from their ruinous path. “The building of this church was conceptualised to move the work of God higher, particularly to propagate the ideal of CAC founder, Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola. “Apart from spiritual healing and rebirth which many had benefited, our ministry also believes in humanitarian services. “Thousands of poor people, poor students and others have been empowered through scholarship and job creation and that is what the work of God is all about, to make people happy by loosening them from afflictions.” https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/second-term-mandate-dont-rely-on-aides.html

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has reacted to statement by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) that Governor Seyi Makinde was wrong to have sacked council chairmen in the state. In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Akeem Olatunji, the party said APC was yet to recover from the electoral shock it suffered after the 2019 elections. The statement read: “The attention of Oyo State PDP has been drawn to a reckless and unguarded press release credited to Oyo State APC in which they kicked against measures to prevent premeditated violence by members of the proscribed NURTW and looting spree in the local councils across the state. “It is pertinent to note that Oyo State APC leadership is yet to grapple with the fact that its eight-year ignoble reign of suffering, impunity, desecration of traditional institution and unimaginable looting of the state’s resources have come to an end. Hence, their attempt to stifle efforts of Engr Seyi Makinde PDP-led administration to reconstruct and reposition Oyo State to reclaim her lost glory. “ He explained that the dissolution of the local governments and LCDA was long overdue, “as the former Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, knew very well that they were illegal contraptions, created to empower his SENACO faction to the detriment of other tendencies in APC, while all laid down rules, procedures and processes in creating LCDA and organising credible elections were violated…” Claiming that the recent pockets of violence witnessed in the state, which necessitated the proscription of NURTW could be traced to APC in Oyo state to create artificial unrest to discredit the new government, he said the immediate past administration forgot that the poor populace they once governed was at the receiving end of their crude means of playing opposition. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/06/you-are-yet-to-recover-from-electoral.html

Youth Action on Tobacco Control and Health (YATCH), an NGO, has urged the Federal Government to enforce the tobacco control law to reduce the prevalence of tobacco smoking and its health risks. Its Executive Director, Mr Seye Omiyefa, made the appeal on Friday in Lagos in commemoration of the World No Tobacco Day, marked annually on May 31. Omiyefa said that the enforcement of the law would help to push forward the goal of the organisation to sensitise millions of youths in the country. “Passage of the draft tobacco control regulations in Nigeria on May 21 is a bold step by the National Assembly and it is commendable. However, this has been delayed for four years. “YATCH urges the government to expedite the process of gazetting the regulations and commencement of enforcement by the relevant agencies of government. “The law will create an easy environment for us to disseminate our intervention plans,” he said. The officer said that the organisation had sensitised over 350,000 students on the effects of tobacco smoking. He said also that it plan to sensitise two million students by the end of 2020 with substance abuse prevention intervention plans. “YATCH has visited over 125 secondary schools sensitising them on the effects of tobacco smoking. “We are currently carrying out a substance abuse prevention intervention in five secondary schools in Ibadan. “This is expected to increase to 50 schools by the end of 2019. “The platform of the Youth Action Against tobacco club created by YATCH will be employed to disseminate and create a team of experts including stakeholders in the schools. “This will ensure that the stakeholders properly carry out and support YATCH’s initiative of Substance Abuse Prevention in secondary schools,” he said. Omiyefa said that tobacco had negative impact on people’s health such as lung cancer and chronic respiratory among others. He said: “Research has shown that smoking cigarettes or any form of tobacco affects lung health because a person breathes in, not only nicotine but also a variety of additional chemicals. “These chemicals are responsible for a substantial increase in the risk of developing lung cancer. This risk is 25 times greater for men and 25.7 times greater for women. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/05/ngo-tasks-nigerian-govt-to-enforce.html

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has struck out a case before it challenging the nomination of Senator Uche Ekwunife as the Candidate of the People's Democratic Party in the recently conducted Anambra Central Senatorial election. The Plantiff, Mr Ifeanyi Francis Udechukwu approached the court seeking to nullify the Candidacy of Senator Ekwunife. Delivering the judgment on Friday, the presiding Judge, Justice Okon Abang described the plantiff as a meddlesome interloper and a busy body. The Judge read that the plantiff lacks the locus standi to institute the case. Speaking further, Justice Abang affirmed that the plantiff's action is statute barred having been filed out of time. "Both the PDP constitution and the electoral guidelines allow a party to withdraw and substitute a candidate", he held. The court further held that the plantiff's commencement of the action is repugnant to the PDP constitution and affirmed that Senator Uche Ekwunife's nomination was done in compliance with the PDP's constitution and the electoral act. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/05/court-strikes-out-suit-challenging.html

The session was aimed at charting a new course for Nigerian women in the politics and governance of the country. The issues discussed includes women and youths empowerment, maternal and child health, girl-child education as well as the stake of women in federal government programmes. First, let me welcome all of you to this Press Conference. The reason for addressing you today is to provide an update on the recent decision of the Supreme Court regarding the candidates fielded by the APC in Zamfara State for the 2019 elections 2. It is important to provide a background to the legal process that culminated in the Supreme Court decision on 24/5/19. You may all recall that the Commission issued the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 general elections on 9/1/18, over one year in advance. 2. Among other activities, the conduct of party primaries was scheduled to take place between 18th August and 7th October 2018. 3. Unfortunately, the APC did not conduct its primaries in Zamfara State within this stipulated time and the Commission duly informed the party that it would not be in a position to present candidates for elections in the State. 4. Subsequently, various interested parties, including the APC itself, approached the court over the decision of the Commission. 5. Just before the election, the subsisting court judgment at the time ordered the Commission to include the APC on the ballot for the Governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly elections, which the Commission complied with. 6. However, since the elections were completed, a Court of Appeal judgment and now a Supreme Court judgment have determined that the APC did not conduct valid primaries for the elections in question. 7. In its judgment delivered on 24/5/19, the Supreme Court, having determined that the APC did not conduct valid primaries, said that the votes cast for the party in all the elections in question were “wasted” and ordered the Commission to recognize the runners-up as the winners. 8. This judgment affects the positions of Governor and Deputy-Governor, three Senatorial, seven Federal and twenty-four State Assembly Constituencies. 9. Following the judgment of the Supreme Court, the Commission has met in two emergency sessions and taken briefings from our lawyers and staff on the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment. 10. While the legislative elections (Senatorial, House of Representatives & State House of Assembly elections) are straight forward to deal with because they entail first-past-the-post or simple majority of votes, the Governorship election is determined not just by majority votes 11. … but also spread in accordance with Section 179 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). This means that we had to first discount the votes cast for the APC at the elections and then carefully rework the spread by Local Government Areas based on the new valid votes. 12. In compliance with the Supreme Court judgment, the Commission has now determined the winners of the elections in Zamfara State as follows: Governorship 1. GOVERNOR: BELLO MOHAMMED MATAWALLE, MALE, PDP 2. DEPUTY GOVERNOR: MAHDI ALIYU GUSAU, MALE, PDP. Senatorial 1. ZAMFARA NORTH ALHAJI YA’U SAHABI MALE, PDP 2. BUKKUYUM NORTH IBRAHIM MOHAMMED NA’IDDA MALE, PDP 24. BUKKUYUM SOUTH SANI DAHIRU MALE, PDP INEC will issue Certificates of Return to the new winners as follows: i. Governor & Deputy Governor-elect, Senators-elect & Members of the House of Representatives-elect will receive their certificates on Monday 27th May 2019 @ the Commission’s Electoral Institute at 2.00pm. ii. Members of the State House of Assembly-elect will receive their certificates from the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Zamfara State at the INEC State Office in Gusau on Friday 31stMay 2019 at 10.00am. I wish to seize this opportunity to draw the attention of all stakeholders, but particularly the political parties, to the implications of the Supreme Court judgment on the Zamfara matter. It is clear that properly conducted party primaries are cardinal to the proper internal functioning of political parties, the electoral process and our democratic system at large. Therefore, political parties must take very seriously the conduct of primaries according to all extant rules, including the monitoring of the processes by INEC to avoid a repeat of the Zamfara experience. I want therefore to remind us that the Commission has since 9th April 2019 issued the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 Bayelsa and Kogi Governorship elections by which party primaries are scheduled to hold between the 2nd and 29th August 2019. I appeal to political parties intending to field candidates in the elections to adhere strictly to this and other timelines in the Timetable and Schedule of activities. I thank you very much and I will now take some questions. Prof. Mahmood Yakubu https://www.akelicious.net/2019/05/read-inecs-full-statement-on-zamfara.html

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to embark on a fresh industrial action if the Federal Government fails to show commitment towards implementing the 2019 Memorandum of Action. ASUU National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi issued the threat during a briefing with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu while giving an update on the ongoing renegotiation with the government over the contending N25 billion on Wednesday. Ogunyemi said, “Since information on the amounts mentioned in the media went round, the ASUU has been inundated with enquiries on the union’s perspective to the story. “Funding for the revitalisation of public universities has for years been of very high priority to ASUU. “Reaching an agreement with the Federal Government has often been a frustrating journey for our union. It is often marked with protests, strikes and requires a conscious and focused engagement. The 2001 agreement, which gave birth to the 2009 agreement, was not an exemption. The exception here is the personality leading the government negotiation team. “The current leadership of the government team clearly lacks the academic disposition and humility needed to undertake such task. “Our members enjoy their work and hate to see any disruption in the smooth running of our universities. However, the level of frustration occasioned by the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards meeting the terms of the 2019 Memorandum of Action that was freely signed with our union is increasingly becoming unbearable. “We, therefore, call on all Nigerian patriots, parents and students including the Nigeria Labour Congress to prevail on the government to keep to the terms of our agreement. Otherwise, our union should not be held responsible for any disruption in the system.” https://www.akelicious.net/2019/05/ASUU-strike-lecturers-issue-fresh.html

Nigerian carrier, Air Peace, says it will begin flight operations to Johannesburg, South Africa and Sharjah, United Arab Emirates next month. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, announced the new routes at the inauguration of the airline’s Board of Directors on Wednesday in Ikeja. He said Dubai, Johannesburg, London, Houston, Guangzhou and Mumbai would soon join the airline’s international route network while plans were also on to connect more cities within Nigeria. Onyema said the airline had so far acquired four B777 aircraft for its long-haul operations with three already delivered ahead of the international operations. He said Air Peace had placed a firm order with Boeing for 10 brand new B737 Max 8 aircraft and that it would continue to monitor the situation based on safety concerns raised about the aircraft. Onyema added that the airline had also placed a firm order for 10 brand new Embraer 195-E2 jets and purchase right for 20 aircraft of the same model which would be delivered by May 2020. Onyema said Air Peace was well aware of the hostilities faced by Nigerian carriers outside the country and was bracing up for the challenge through massive investment in equipment. He urged the Federal Government to protect Nigerian airlines from the outrageous charges being imposed on them while operating outside the country or reciprocate such charges on foreign airlines flying into Nigeria. According to him, Air Peace has lost over N1. 2 billion in the last one year in flying to countries in the West Coast of Africa such as Senegal, Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia, due to exorbitant charges. “There is a gang up against Nigerian airlines. The Single Africa Air Transport Market (SAATM) is geared towards fleecing Nigeria and nothing more. “The government should reciprocate these charges to also discourage them from coming into Nigeria. “Air Peace may soon go to court to ban some airlines from operating in Nigeria if the government fails to do something about this exploitation and unhealthy competition,” he said. Onyema maintained that Air Peace was poised to dominate the African airspace and also compete with the legacy airlines following the acquisition of more aircraft for its flight services. “The reason I started Air Peace was to create employment opportunities for Nigerians and help in national development because I know that all the violence and security challenges we are facing will reduce if our youths are positively engaged. “I enjoin all Nigerians with means to invest in the country and help to create jobs to complement the efforts of the government,” he said. NAN reports that the nine board members are Mr Allen Onyema, his wife Alice, Chief Emeka Ngige (SAN), Mr Mutiu Summonu, Mrs Eka Okoro, Mr Benjamin Adeyileka, Mr Mohammed Danjuma, Mrs Ejiro Eghagha and Mrs Oluwatoyin Olajide. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/05/air-peace-to-begin-flights-to.html

The Nasarawa State Local Government Service Commission has released the promotions of over 8000 workers across the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state. Mohammed Bawa, the Chairman of the commission, stated this on Wednesday in Lafia, during the continued tour of the LGAs by officials of the commission. Bawa said that the commission decided to release the promotions because they had been piling up since 2011. “Though all LGAs workers have outstanding promotions of eight years, the commission was only able to release the promotion of over 90 per cent of the workers who are qualified. “Those whose promotions are still hanging have failed to produce their original certificates. “So, the affected persons were given the opportunity to provide their original certificates to the commission to enable it to release their promotions. “With this action, we have succeeded in releasing eight years promotions of over 8000 LGA workers in the state,” the chairman said. Bawa said that the tour was aimed at meeting the local government staff to hear their problems, assess the facilities in the council areas, with the view improving on them. The chairman also explained that the commission would commence extensive training and retraining of the staff in order to enhance their capacity for better output. He noted that the commission had concluded plans to organise workshops and seminars for the workers beginning from May 27. Bawa added that the commission would also grand financial assistance to workers on in-service training in recognised tertiary institutions as parts of the blueprint to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the system. The chairman called on the workers to be more dedicated to their jobs to complement the gesture. He also warned that the commission would not hesitate to discipline any staff caught flouting the rules guiding the conduct of civil servants in the country. In a remark, the Lafia LGA Chairman, Aminu Maifata, commended the commission’s chairman and officials for the visit as well as the staff of the council for their dedication and commitment. Maifata, represented by Abubakar Mohammed, the Secretary of the LGA, appealed to the commission to back the promotion with financial benefits and engage in comprehensive training of the staff. https://www.akelicious.net/2019/05/commission-releases-promotions-of-8000.html |
