President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday presented a N7.298 trillion 2017 budget before a joint session of the National Assembly, stating that the budget was designed to drive infrastructure, enhance growth and investment, boost local production and consumption and create jobs. Buhari, who arrived the chamber of the House of Representatives at 1.59 p.m., said the budget comprised N2.98 trillion non-debt recurrent expenditure, capital expenditure of N2.24 trillion (including capital of statutory transfers) and a fiscal deficit of N2.36 trillion (about 2.18 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP). He said the deficit would be financed mainly by projected borrowing of about N2.32 trillion, while N1.067 trillion or about 46 per cent of the borrowing would be sourced from external sources and N1.254 trillion to be borrowed from the domestic market. Furthermore, he said the budget consisted of statutory transfers of N419.02 billion, allocation for debt service of N1.66 trillion and a sinking fund of N177.46 billion for the retirement of certain maturing bonds. The president added: “Based on these assumptions, aggregate revenue available to fund the federal budget is N4.94 trillion. This is 28 per cent higher than 2016 full year projections. “Oil is projected to contribute N1.985 trillion of this amount. Non-oil revenues, largely comprising company income tax, value added tax, Customs and Excise duties, and Federation Account levies, are estimated to contribute N1.373 trillion. “We have set a more realistic projection of N807.57 billion for independent revenues, while we have projected receipts of N565.1 billion from various recoveries. Other revenue sources, including mining, amount to N210.9 billion. “With regards to expenditure, we have proposed a budget size of N7.298 trillion which is a nominal 20.4 per cent increase over 2016 estimates, of which 30.7 per cent of this expenditure will be capital, in line with our determination to reflate and pull the economy out of the current recession. “Distinguished members of the National Assembly, the 2017 budget is based on a benchmark crude oil price of US$42.5 per barrel; oil production estimate of 2.2 million barrels per day; and an average exchange rate of N305 to the US dollar.” Buhari, who said the budgetary allocation to the judiciary had been increased from N70 billion to N100 billion, added that the increase was meant to enhance the independence of the judiciary and simultaneously enable the judges to perform their functions effectively. He gave the breakdown of recurrent expenditure to include N482.37 billion for the Ministry of Interior; N398.01 billion for Ministry of Education; N325.87 billion for Ministry of Defence; and N252.87 billion for Ministry of Health. According to him, the government had decided to maintain the personnel cost of about N1.8 trillion in order to complete the work that had been started, which he said would include the elimination of all ghost workers from government payroll. He pointed out that adequate provisions had been made in the budget to ensure that all civil service personnel who had not been enrolled on the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) platform were captured. The president also informed his audience that the Efficiency Unit of the Federal Ministry of Finance had been mandated to cut certain overhead costs by 20 per cent in order to eliminate all non-essential costs and consequently free resources to fund the capital expenditure. A breakdown of capital allocations to various sectors as presented by the president shows that the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing got the lion share of the budget with N529 billion. This was followed by the Ministry of Transportation with N262 billion. Others are: Special Intervention Programme, N150 billion; Ministry of Defence, N140 billion; Ministry of Water Resources, N85 billion; Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, N81 billion; Ministry of Interior, N63 billion; Ministry of Education, N50 billion; Universal Basic Education Commission, N92 billion; Ministry of Health, N51 billion; Federal Capital Territory (FCT), N37 billion; Niger Delta Ministry, N33 billion; Niger Delta Development Commission, N61 billion; Presidential Amnesty Programme, N65 billion; and rehabilitation of the North-east, N45 billion. The budget also includes N100 billion for Special Intervention Programme “as seed money into the N1 trillion Family Homes Fund that will underpin a new social housing programme”. The president said: “This substantial expenditure is expected to stimulate construction activity throughout the country.” He said higher allocations had been made for infrastructure projects because they would have multiplier effects on productivity, employment and would boost private sector investments in the country. The president added: “Efforts to fast-track the modernisation of our railway system will receive further boost through the allocation of N213.14 billion as counterpart funding for the Lagos-Kano, Calabar-Lagos, Ajaokuta-Itakpe-Warri rail line and the Kaduna-Abuja railway projects. “As I mentioned earlier, in 2016, we invested a lot of time ensuring the paper work is done properly while negotiating the best deal for Nigeria. I must admit this took longer than expected, but I am optimistic that these projects will commence in 2017 for all to see. “Given the emphasis placed on industrialisation and supporting (small and medium enterprises (SMEs), the sum of N50 billion has been set aside as federal government contribution for the expansion of existing, as well as for the development of new export processing and special economic zones. “These will be developed in partnership with the private sector, as we continue our efforts to promote and protect Nigerian businesses. “Furthermore, as the benefits of agriculture and mining are starting to become visible, I have instructed that the export expansion grant should be revived in the form of tax credits to companies. “This will further enhance the development of the agriculture and mining sectors, thereby attracting more investment and creating more jobs. The sum of N20 billion has been voted for the revival of this programme. “Our small and medium-scale businesses continue to face difficulties in accessing long-term and more affordable credits. To address this situation, the sum of N15 billion has been provided for the recapitalisation of the Bank of Industry and the Bank of Agriculture. “In addition, the Development Bank of Nigeria will soon start operations with US$1.3 billion focused exclusively on small and medium-sized enterprises.” Buhari further said agriculture remained the expression of the federal government’s commitment to diversify the economy with what he described as an historic allocation of N92 billion to the sector. He said the sum would compliment the efforts by both the Ministry of Agriculture and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to boost agriculture output “through increased intervention funding at a single digit interest rate under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, commercial agriculture credit schemes and the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System for Agricultural Lending”. The president also said the government’s agriculture policy would “focus on integrated development of the sector by facilitating access to inputs, improving market access, providing equipment and storage, as well as supporting the development of commodity exchanges”. He also said the government in 2017 would pursue job creation by improving the skills of the labour force, especially young people and consequently work with the private sector and state governments with a view to establishing and operating model technical and vocational education institutes. Buhari said the government had proposed to boost healthcare through the expansion of coverage to primary healthcare centres and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). On the Special Intervention Programme, the president added that the 2017 budget proposal had retained the allocation of N500 billion for the programme which he said would comprise the Home-grown School Feeding Programme, Government Economic Empowerment Programme, and the N-Power Job Creation Programme, The N-Power programme, he said, would provide loans for traders and artisans; effect conditional cash transfers to the poorest families and provide funds for the Family Homes Fund (social housing scheme). full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/buhari-presents-n73tn-budget-to.html#more

In spite of repeated calls by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, calling on all police commands in the country to withdraw mobile policemen serving as personal guards, a 49-year-old estate consultant based in the United States of America, Mrs. Toyin Momodu, has raised the alarm over the invasion of her property by armed policemen on the instruction of one of her her tenants, names withheld. She alleged that the said tenant is colluding with a senior police officer, who has dispatched policemen with guns to the building for a 24-hour surveillance, “in a brazen attempt to take over the property from her.” The house is a five-apartment building on Adebola Street, off Adeniran Ogunsanya, Surulere, Lagos, which Momodu said she bought from the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) 15 years ago.Momodu is not alone in her fears about the sudden appearance of policemen. Other tenants have also expressed fear about the activities and intentions of the said tenant, who has mobilized, at least, six policemen to stay in the compound as his bodyguards everyday. Momodu told The Guardian that she got hint of the unusual police presence in her compound some days ago when a tenant sent her an email to inform her that heavily armed men had taken over the house. Explaining how the tenant came to live in her house, she said: “I rented out all the four other apartments in the house and left one to be used by me and my family when we are in Nigeria. It is fully furnished with a large generating set. I was advised to sublet it so that everything would not lie fallow for the period I am abroad. So, my brother informed me that he had found someone who, wanted to rent it for an initial period of three months. “I didn’t even ask what he did because I believed his stay was just temporary. We agreed on the payment of N8,000 per night, which amounted to N240,000 per month. In March 2016 when he came, he first paid N168,000 and later paid N400,000, totaling N568,000 for 71 days rent. “But since the last N400,000, he stopped paying. I called him to find out what was wrong but he said he promised to pay his debt, which is now over N2 million. After that, he issued cheques, which the banks said were dud. It was after I got wind of the policemen in my compound that I was forced to come to Nigeria to find out what was actually going on. “When I got back to Nigeria and went to my house, I asked the six policemen what they were doing and they said they were guarding one of my tenants. I have told him to leave my house. I even told him to forget the money he owed because I just wanted him out. But he has refused to move. I am actually afraid of going into my own home now,” she said. Momodu said she had reported the matter at the Bode Thomas Police Division, where the Divisional Police Officer had ordered the said tenant to immediately vacate the house. When our correspondent visited the house on Tuesday, two armed police sergeants and a corporal were sitting in the compound. One of them, Sergeant Odetola Victor, challenged why anybody would want to take the picture of the house while he also threatened to get our reporter arrested before the intervention of passersby prevailed http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/landlord-alleges-sabotage-as-tenant.html#more2

Less than 24 hours before the presentation of the 2017 budget, the executive arm tuesday submitted a revised 2017-2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) to the National Assembly. In the new document, the government increased the projected N6.866 trillion 2017 budget to N7.298 trillion. It also predicated the budget on an exchange rate of N305/$, from the initial N290.Whereas it retained the 2.2 million oil production volume and $42.50 per barrel oil benchmark, the executive arm also increased domestic borrowing from N1.072 trillion to N1.253 trillion. It, however, reduced foreign borrowing under the revised MTEF from N1.336 trillion to N1.067 trillion. It also increased aggregate capital expenditure from N1.939 trillion to N2.243 trillion and raised recurrent non-debt from N2.5 trillion to N2.629 trillion, but put its revenue target at N10 trillion. Recurrent expenditure was revised to N1.66 trillion. The executive is also projecting a budget deficit of N2.3 trillion in 2017 as against N2.4 trillion in the 2016 budget. While appearing before the Joint Senate Committee on Finance and Appropriation, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, said the government had opted to increase the budget projections from N6.9 trillion to N7.3 trillion because Nigeria could only end the recession if more money is pumped into the economy. He also said the 2017 budget would be financed through an early licensing round, royalties, promissory notes, and loot recoveries. Udoma said the federal government would award new oil licences, review the current joint venture arrangements with oil companies, marginal oil fields and mount pressure on revenue generating agencies to exceed expected targets. According to him, of the N10 trillion revenue target, N5 trillion would be generated from the sale of crude oil, while the balance of N5.06 trillion would be generated from non-oil receipts. He said non-oil revenue would come from corporate and company taxes, Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Company, stamp duties, capital gains tax, value added tax (VAT), customs, excise, fees, surcharges on luxury items, special levies and federal government independent revenue. Udoma added: “I know N7 trillion seems larger than N6 trillion. But in actual dollar terms, the 2017 budget is smaller. We have had challenges in revenue generation in funding the 2016 budget, so we are trying to get to the bottom of revenue generating agencies in order to raise more money. “On independent revenue expected from revenue generating agencies, we need to work with the National Assembly. The issue of 80 per cent of operating surplus is a problem that must be paid to the Consolidated Revenue Fund. We need to work with the National Assembly to review certain clauses of the law. We need to be more imaginative and creative in order to get out of the problem that we have with revenue generating agencies. more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/24-hours-to-budget-presentation-fg.html#more

Certainly in Nigeria. We have talked but we have not taken action. What is Talk without action.Instead of cursing and abusing our leaders. We should think of ways to make changes.A simple step we made was to take was to create a petition on behalf of this players in solidarity. more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/superfaiconsnigerians-are-not-ready-for.html?m=1

Hypertek Boss, Innocent Idibia, Mr Tuface has great and strong genes, this is a fact that cannot be denied. For all we cared, his children from three women could be from just one as they all look alike in an uncanny manner. Tuface’s two children from Sumbo Adeoye are so much like their father that one easily sees their father’s look in their eyes. His two daughters with wife are no different, despite the fact that they are girls, they still clung to their father’s genes. His three kids with Pero are also his little replicas. A picture from Isabel Idibia’s 8th birthday celebration threw this glaring fact in our face once again. Thierry Henry wants Arsenal to draw on their 2006 Champions League heroics to defy history and overcome Bayern Munich after the clubs were again drawn together in the competition on Monday. Arsene Wenger’s side will meet the Bundesliga champions over two legs for a spot in the quarter-finals, having been pitted together on Europe’s biggest stage for the fourth time in five seasons. Bayern knocked the Gunners out at the same stage in 2013 and 2014, while they met in the group phase of last season’s competition. But Henry – the club’s all-time record goalscorer – believes Arsenal’s run to the final a decade ago can provide inspiration for the current crop. “I remember when we drew Real Madrid the year we went to the final in 2006 with Arsenal, I remember people were like, ‘it’s over for Arsenal’,” the Frenchman told Sky Sports. “And I remember guys there [at Madrid] going, ‘it’s a good draw, we’re happy’ – they finished second, we finished first in our group. We were the so-called first team that everybody wanted to play. But we managed to reach the final and we beat Real Madrid. “If I was a player now I would take that as a challenge. People think we can’t beat them, we played them before, we lost against them. more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/henry-insists-arsenal-can-beat-bayern.html#more

Keshinro Ololade, aka Lil Kesh, speaks about his career, relationship with Olamide and his new record label Was it your childhood dream to become a music artiste? I have pretty much been around music all my life, and the love for music has gotten me this far. My dad is a pastor and he owns a church. HWhat was your dad’s reaction to your decision to become an artiste? My dad was cool with it. He lets you do whatever you want to do. He feels that whatever his life story is doesn’t have to affect the way his children live their lives. According to what he used to tell me, everybody must live his or her individual stories. He watched me grow from being part of the choir, learning to play drums, and attending music shows. Till now, he gives me all the necessary support and respects my decisions. Considering that your dad is a pastor, isn’t he bothered by your vulgar lyrics? Those vulgar songs are basically about me doing my job and he doesn’t interfere. Besides, not all my songs are vulgar. I have recorded songs like Ishe, Semilore and others. However, the ones that go viral are the ones with vulgar lyrics. I understand my markets, and I know the demography I’m directing my music to, which is the youth and adults. I’m a blunt entertainer, but I consider my fans, and always try to give them what they want. But this year, I decided that I’ll feed my fans with more meaningful songs that will inspire them. What inspires you to write such vulgar songs? Most of those songs were not written; we just go into the studio and ‘vibe.’ However, my environment inspires me and it’s not like I deliberately try to be vulgar. Beyond the stage persona, who is Keshinro Ololade as a person? I have a dual personality in the sense that I could go into the studio and come up with crazy songs that would entertain people. I could also be home alone relaxing, and listening to soft and mid-tempo songs. Listening to my songs, some people may think I’m a loud and local boy, but they’re usually surprised when they meet me and see that I’m calm and cool-headed. I’m not that outgoing, except if I have to attend events. What’s your educational background? I went to a number of primary schools, all in Lagos. I also attended secondary school in Lagos before proceeding to the University of Lagos to study Linguistics. However, I had to defer my admission because of my hectic schedule. Right now, I’ve enrolled at the National Open University, where I’m studying Mass Communication. Some people believe you came out of nowhere to rise to the top in the music industry. Can you share some of your struggles? I have always been a hustler. I started my career by attending several talent hunt competitions, and I won some of them which made me quite popular in school. At a point, I was always hanging around studios because I had no money to record songs. How did you meet Olamide? I recorded a song titled Lyrical in late 2013, and Olamide heard it sometime in 2014. Apparently, he loved it, and he said he wanted to meet me. When I met Olamide, he had a contract ready for me, and that was how my career kick-started. I was blessed enough to record a hit song within months, and my career has been growing ever since. I have always seen Olamide as a king, and I even respect him more now. How would you describe Olamide as a boss? Despite the fame and fortune around him, Olamide is just like the guy next door. He is easy-going and down-to-earth. He is friendly with everyone and he could eat from the same plate with you without airs and graces. Was it really your label mate, Viktoh, who introduced you to Olamide? Yes. Viktoh is a friend to Olamide’s younger brother, DJ Enimoney, and he had known Olamide for about five years before I came into the picture. We used to meet at some talent hunt competitions, and he was the one that played my song, Lyrical, to Olamide. He actually signed both of us on the same day. It was reported that there’s bad blood between you and Viktoh? That’s just the figment of some people’s imaginations. VIktoh will always be my brother. We all have our different times to shine. Let’s talk about Shoki… I think Shoki is my biggest song to date. It became popular barely weeks after it was released. Initially, I was in denial because I didn’t know the song was that big. At some point, people like American singer, Missy Elliot, uploaded a video of herself dancing to Shoki. To be honest, it put pressure on me, because it was almost bigger than Lil Kesh, the brand. Your style of music is similar to Olamide’s. Wasn’t he afraid of you overshadowing him? No, there’s no competition between us. Olamide built the YBNL family in a way that we all love one another. Even if he is meant to release a song, and one of his artistes also wants to release a song, he would defer his to allow his artiste’s song to be put out. Besides, I won’t say I decided to do music like Olamide; it came naturally to me. We’re both from Bariga, and we have the same musical influences. YBNL has a sound of its own; it is not an Olamide sound, or a Lil Kesh sound. Do you feel you know enough about the music industry to float your own record label? Olamide brought us up to know every single detail about the music business. There weren’t many protocols, and he made me know all the industry contacts needed for distribution, promotion, PR and basically all parts of the business. He didn’t treat me like an artiste, but as a brother. Anyway, my label, YAGI is directly under YBNL. Olamide still handles the business for me. I’m just responsible for myself financially, but anytime I want to drop a new single or video, Olamide knows about it. YBNL is still Lil Kesh’s management, and the idea of floating a new label was a joint decision. When will you be signing your own artistes? It might not be anytime soon, but we’re definitely going to do that. When I feel mentally and financially ready, I will cross that bridge. Right now, there’s still a lot of work to be done on Lil Kesh. Do you still visit Bariga where you grew up? No, I don’t. Why is it so? It’s called the hood for a reason, and I have to consider a lot of things before going. I’m like a king in Bariga, and a lot of people love me there. If I’m to go there, it has to be a grand entry with security in place because a lot of people would definitely troop out to the streets. Besides, my family does not stay there anymore. I have relocated them to a better neighborhood. You have found fame and fortune at an early age. How have you been able to manage it? I always say I may be 22 years old biologically, but in my head, I’m older than that. Age is not maturity. It is your experience that makes you, and I have seen a lot. From being in the ghetto to living a better life; these things have built me. Let’s talk a bit about the Headies. Did you feel robbed that you didn’t get the Next Rated Award? I have put that behind me as it isn’t relevant to my career. As far as I’m concerned, my award is living a good life. Awards don’t determine which artiste is the best. So far you are nominated for an award, you are a winner already. You have also been nominated for this year’s Headies. Will you be motivating your fans to vote for you? It’s not just about me and how I feel about these things, it’s about my fans. They supported my music this year, and that’s why the album got nominated. I’m going to post about the award on social media, and appeal to my fans for support. Can you recall the most awesome part of your career? Anytime I step on stage and thousands of people are screaming my name. What’s the craziest experience you have had with a fan? There was a time I was on Lagos Island, and some street boys stopped all the cars on the road, saying nobody should move until they had all taken pictures with me. It was crazy on that day as their action caused massive traffic build-up. more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/lil-keshno-big-deal-signing-on-fans.html

Wife of Nigerian President, Aisha Buhari, has claimed that she has not received any gift from anyone since her husband assumed office as the number one citizen of the country, warning those who would want to gift her this season to bury the idea. Mrs. Buhari made this disclosure at the unveiling of a new campaign against graft tagged, “Women Against Corruption” in Abuja, on Wednesday. According to her, she did not also intend to collect gifts as the wife of the president even in the future. She said, “People have been trying to bring some gift items to me but I have not been collecting them. Right from when I was campaigning with the Wife of the Vice President for our husbands, we did not take a dime from anyone and we have continued like that till today.“I have never collected any gift and I am not ready to do so even in the future,” she said, and received thunderous applause from the audience made up of top government officials, Nigerians women and businessmen. Aisha recently sparked controversy when she openly came out to criticize the government of her husband. Concerned about the aftermath of the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State, Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, one of the closest allies of President Muhammadu Buhari, thursday admitted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was going through a difficult period, but expressed optimism that the party would pull through it soon. Amosun was believed to have been one of the kingpins behind the election victory of the party in Ondo State. His comments came on the heels of a fence-mending meeting between the leadership of the party and Senate President Bukola Saraki and other principal officers of the Senate who are members of the party, at the APC national secretariat in Abuja wednesday.Amosun, who was particularly concerned about the new status being accorded him within political circles since the Ondo election as the new leader of the APC in the South-west, rejected the title, but reiterated his support and loyalty to Buhari and the APC. Amosun was apparently reacting to the disenchantment within the party over the Ondo governorship election that is threatening to tear the APC apart. A National Leader of the APC, Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, for instance, have been identified as critical chieftains of the party that have opened talks with the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to form a new mega party that would wrest control from the APC in 2019. In a statement he personally signed, Amosun said: “For the avoidance of doubt, I am not, by any stretch of imagination, the leader or new leader of the APC in the South-west. I am a loyal party member, and I shall stand by our party and of course, with President Muhammadu Buhari. I am also obliged to respect all our leaders in the state, South-west and Nigeria. “This is the minimum that is required of every party member by custom, and by the constitution of the party. I acknowledge that these are rather difficult times in the life of our party and in the nation. “I am confident that we shall overcome and our party, the APC, and our dear country will come out even stronger, more viable and united.” Addressing the issue of his assumption as the new APC leader in the South-west, the governor added: “I have noticed with consternation the recurring misnomer and mis-description in political nomenclature particularly as they relate to the politics of the South-west, and by extension, the country as a whole. “I refer to the emerging tendency of referring to me and some other members of our great party as the ‘Leader(s) of the South West’ or ‘New Leader(s) of the APC in the South West’. “When that phrase was first brought to my attention, particularly during the weeks preceding the Ondo State gubernatorial election, my immediate reaction was to ignore same as yet another distractive antics of the opposition. “Somehow, the misnomer stuck and it came to appear rather more frequently in several other fora and publications, including respectable gatherings and the media. “Lies and misconceptions, when told and asserted repeatedly with gusto, have the tendency to assume the toga of the truth. It is for these reasons that I have considered it of critical importance to set the records straight. “As the governor of an APC controlled state, Ogun, I am a huge stakeholder in my party. In all that I do, in the open and in private, the bigger interest of our party remains the guiding principle for my actions, decisions and alliances. “I grew up in the old Western Region, where loyalty to corporate goal and party supremacy was the hallmark of a true party member, and indeed every citizen.”Amosun maintained that “true leadership” could not be by conjecture or wishful thinking. “From the template that we inherited from our forbearers, it is usually earned. In political parlance, leadership also evolves. If we take this as our guide, even as governor, I have leaders from my state and at the national level http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/apc-is-going-through-rough-patch-amosun.html?m=1

Governor Willie Obiano has presented his administration's draft estimate and roadmap for the 2017 fiscal year put at 115.5 billion naira to the state House of Assembly. A breakdown of the 2017 draft estimate titled " Budget for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth" will see the state spend 56.6 billion naira on Recurrent Expenditure and 58.9 billion naira on Capital Expenditure, reflecting the focus on significant infrastructural development during the year to stimulate the local economy towards recovery. Projected on a crude oil price benchmark of 42 dollar per barrel and 305 naira to a dollar exchange rate estimate, the draft estimate represents an 11percent increase from that of last year whose budget size was put at 101.4 billion naira. The budget is also designed to prioritize production over consumption, targeting a Recurrent to Capital Expenditure ratio of 49:51, with major Capital projects plans in key sectors of the State economy. These include Works and Infrastructure with a budget of #24 billion, Agriculture 5.4billion, Education 3.4billion, Youths Empowerment and Social Investments 1.6 billion among others. Presenting the budget estimate, Governor Obiano who described it as his administration's response to the very difficult economic situation forced upon the state by the present recession, stated that the primary focus remains the development of the state's economy and laying a solid foundation for a future that every one will he proud of. According to a new report by US-based Guttmacher Institute, and Ipas, a nongovernmental organisation that focuses on female reproductive rights, incidences of induced abortions are more common in the South-South and the North-East regions of Nigeria, while the South-West region is at the bottom The report shows that besides insurgency, the North East region of Nigeria is also plagued by a high rate of abortions – second only to the South-South.The proportion of abortions is lowest in South West, at 11 per cent, and highest in the South-South at 17 per cent, and 16 per cent in the North East,” the report says. It adds that at least 1. 2 million induced abortions take place in various parts of Nigeria every year. Olutosin Owolude, a consultant lecturer are the department of gynaecology at the University of Ibadan, who presented the report Thursday in Abuja, said increased rates of abortions, done mostly through unsafe methods, have further heightened maternal mortality in the country. “As we all know, Nigeria has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, presently put at 560 per 1000 births,” he said. Mr. Owolude said the study, which was conducted in 2012, went through series of checks before its publication in 2015. “These involve scientific methods that you have to rigorously follow,” he said. “It takes a long time to do this kind of study and to make sure that we do our analyses in a way that we are very confident of the findings,” said Mr. Owolude. “We typically do not want to reveal the results until we have the study peer reviewed and get expert opinion that we have done all we need to do to have a scientific finding,” he added. According to him, the number of induced abortions nationwide doubled from a previous report in 1996, which gave the number as 610, 000 nationwide. He associated the reason for the increase to poor economic conditions which he said has led to an increase in the desire for smaller families. He said Nigeria’s growing population, was another notable factor. Ipas country lead and senior advisor, Hauwa Shekarau, said the program was aimed at exposing the challenges of women and highlighting their reproductive rights, stressing that the life of one woman is as important as that of every woman. Church members, students and members of the family of late Miss Ifedolapo Oladepo staged a protest in Osogbo, Osun State, on Tuesday to register their anger over the alleged negligence of officials of the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Kano State, which led to the death of the 2016 Batch ‘B’ corps member. This is just as the Federal Government stated that the late corps member had renal sepsis occasioned by infection, which killed her.In Osun, the protest took off from the Freedom Park and was led by the National Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Mr. Idowu Odebunmi; the Deputy Coordinator of NANS in the South West, Mr. Saheed Afolabi, and the National President of the National Association of Osun State Students, Mr. Oladejo Bashiru The protesters, who were dressed in black and displayed placards bearing various inscriptions, marched through the Osogbo/Ibadan Road before proceeding to the state House of Assembly. They vowed to continue the protest until those who allegedly failed to give adequate medical attention to the first class graduate of Transport Management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Tehnology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, were exposed and punished. A representative of the Oladepo family, Mr. Bamiji Oladele, while addressing members of the Assembly, led by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Akintunde Adegboye, said the protesters decided to submit their protest letter to the National Assembly through the state lawmakers so that the death could be probed. Oladele said anybody found guilty of negligence in the case should be punished according to the law, adding that such would prevent recurrence of untimely deaths in the scheme. He said Ifedolapo was killed due to negligence because officials at the NYSC camp failed to attend to her on time. “The NYSC should tender a public apology to Nigerians. Investigation should be conducted into the circumstances that led to her death which should be made public and adequate compensation be paid by NYSC.” The NANS PRO said, “The NYSC should be restructured; heavy compensation should be paid to the family of the deceased and any official, who is found guilty, must be punished.” The Deputy Speaker, who addressed the protesters, assured them of the readiness of the lawmakers to take up the fight. He said the state House of Assembly had made known its readiness to probe the alleged negligence which led to the untimely death of the victim, saying they would not allow any cover-up. The remains of the corps member, who hailed from Ila Orangun, Osun State, were buried in Osogbo last Thursday Meanwhile, the Federal Government said Ifedolapo had renal sepsis occasioned by an infection. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, and the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, stated on Tuesday that the result of a test ordered by the government showed that the deceased “had kidney infection probably due to untreated urinary tract infection.” Kazaure said the corps member did not disclose to officials the ailment she had been battling with before resuming to camp. He said, “It is clear that the deceased had an ailment which she did not disclose. From the doctors’ report, the corps member died of renal sepsis occasioned by infection. Even to the untrained, kidney infections do not develop and degenerate to the level of mortality in three days. “The deceased first appeared at the camp clinic with complaints of headache and fever. On examination, the doctor on duty noticed rashes on her legs, which she claimed started appearing as a result of her use of second-hand knickers she bought without first washing them.” The NYSC DG added that the deceased was later referred to the Gwarzo General Hospital for treatment, where after examination, “the doctor concluded that the deceased had kidney infection probably due to untreated urinary tract infection.” According to him, Ifedolapo gave up the ghost after she had been stabilised for the long journey to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for immediate dialysis. Also speaking, Dalung said the public should disregard information on the social media that the lady died of negligence, adding that those “saddled with the responsibility of informing us should always try to crosscheck some of these things before they publish.” More at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/osun-students-protest-death-of-corps.html#more

The Ekiti State Chapter of the progressives party(APC) has asked Gov-Ayodele Fayose to forget any hope of joining the party from the People Democratic Party(PDP) saying the governor is not wanted in the ruling party. Reacting to media report quoting Fayose as planing to dump PDP for another party. Publicity Secretary. Tawio Olatunbosun said in a statement on sunday that APC could not be in the contemplation of the governor if indeed he wanted to move to another party. But Olatunbosun said fayose is day-dreaming if he nursed any hope of seeking refuge in APC controls the Fedral Government. Because he cannot survive it in an opposition party. His words Fayose is always seeking to be relevant in party politics with his party dominating at the centre to enable him get away with his many cases of illegality and lawless conduct. Fayose has been jittery and confused since the PDP lost Ondo State to the ruling APC against all odds and calculations and as a political gambler, who has traversed many parties since 2003 till present, starting from the PDP to APGA, Labour party, romanced briefly with ACN and PPA before moving back to the PDP even as he romanced AD in the last week governorship election, he is at his wits again to save his skin. “Sensing that PDP is in the throes of death, he is contemplating dumping the party for APC, but there is no place for him in APC as he is only looking for an escape route from prosecution for his various infractions on the law since his first aborted tenure as governor,” he explained. He added: “Fayose is a blight to any political association he finds himself. For instance, he chased those who helped him win election in 2003 away from PDP and attacked several other members with thugs before he was sacked over criminal conduct only to return to the same party to cause more confusion in Sheriff/Makarfi fractious PDP where he paid his benefactors, including Buruji Kashamu, with evil. “APC will never accept such a destabilising character and does not have a space for such a demagogue without any ideological bent other than to seize state powers for personal benefits after causing confusion and disaffection among the leaders and running members to the bush.” He advised the governor to take the counsel of Plateau Governor Simon Lalong, who advised Fayose to stay in PDP and face the law over his alleged misappropriation of state resources and other pending criminal charges. He said: “No amount of defection to any party would save Fayose from prosecution. “It is an act of insincerity on the part of Fayose, who daily boasts that he is the leader of opposition, to now dump his party for the party in power thinking that would save him from prosecution. “The party he is planning to defect to is the same party whose members he has clamped in jail for over two years on trumped-up charges and whose many members were harassed, maimed and chased out of town shortly before the Presidential and National Assembly elections in 2015. “Fayose is a trickster and a professional conman who deceives his hapless followers by saying things he does not mean and making promises he does not intend to keep. “His latest hint that he may dump PDP which he later recanted has exposed him as a man of unstable character who should not be taken seriously.” More at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/apc-to-fayoseyou-are-not-wanted.html?m=1

The Arewa Young Lawyers Forum (AYLF) has disowned its president, Barrister Sadiq Ilelah, for calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Governor of the Central Bank (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. Ilelah had, in a statement recently, given President Buhari 14 days to sack Emefiele or face an action from his organisation. He alleged that the CBN governor had played a major role in the destruction of the Nigerian economy. Nigeria is currently battling with recession. But in a counter-statement made available to journalists, the AYLF, through its secretary, Barrister Usman Muhammad Ali, said Ilelah is on his own. According to Ali, the president of the organisation only stated his own opinion in the earlier statement as he did not carry any member along. He asked the public and President Buhari to discountenance the statement by Ilelah which was published on December 1. He said Ilelah’s statement necessitated a meeting of members of the organisation and that after a review of the situation, they agreed to make their stand known on the issue. The organisation said Ilelah’s statement lacks “the input nor the blessing of the majority of the executive members of Arewa Young Lawyers Forum. “Besides, the forum is at the point of consultation and collation of data on the same issue. Therefore it’s not time yet to jump into conclusions with indictment. “We are now busy with our investigation trying to establish with certainty the persons and institutions responsible for our economic woes. “To this end the forum has decided that the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele is not indicted neither is the Central Bank of Nigeria guilty as at now.” More at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/arewa-lawyers-disown-president-for.html?m=1

Former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta state, Chieftain Sunny Onuesoke has urged President MuhammaduBuhari to take seriously the advise given by former President, Chief OlusegunObasanjo. Obasanjo, had few days at an event, advised President Buhari to rise to the challenges posed by the current recession in Nigeria instead of wishful thinking and blame game that would not solve the hapless state of affairs in the country. Onuesoke who lauded the Obansanjo’s advise to President Buhari, said Obasanjo’s submission has summarized Buhari’s leadership style, adding that those with understanding should read and cry out for a change in approach before our nation comes crashing to an irreparable halt. “For the first time or so, I agree with Obasanjo’s submissions. Let us find a way out of this economic meltdown. Things are really bad and getting worse by the day. The present economic team and government as composed have proved themselves unable to pull us out of this economic problem,” he noted. He observed that Obasanjo has always spoken against virtually every Government anytime he believed things were not going well notwithstanding his initial support for such Governments. “He spoke against Shagari, Buhari/Idiagbon, Babangida, Abacha, Yaradua and Jonathan. Yet all these Governments he initially supported. You may not like this man or agree with him on many things but the truth is that he has been fearless in speaking about the State of the Nation under every Government,” Onuesoke recalled. ” Buhari is acting as if he inherited ungovernable Nigeria, recalled that Obasanjo met Nigeria in a far worse state in 1999 after the country has been grounded by the military, stressing that Obasanjo fought corruption then and still saved the economy” “Buhari is only fighting corruption while the masses are dying in hunger as he deepened the economy into excruciating recession . This is why Obasaning is warning that his focus on fighting corruption will amount to exercise in futility without fixing the economy. This is because corruption has been there and by the time Buhari leaves office, corruption will still be there . That’s the naked truth,” Onuesoke explained.
