The real argument about the Senate forgery trial By Kingsley Adonijah Do not be deceived or confused by Saraki, Ekweremadu and the gang of rule benders in the Senate. They are trying, albeit unsuccessfully, to confuse the argument and reasons for their trial. What they did has more serious implications for our democracy than they want you to believe. The same rules they forged provide for how they could be amended and this is very clear. It is only members of the Senate in a public sitting that can bring about the amendment of its rules. Nothing more, nothing less. The instance where Saraki got himself elected by the minority was in contravention of the rules. Senator Ita Enang was the Chairman of Committee of Rules and Business in the 7th Senate. His Committee was the custodian of the rules. He was the one who had the responsibility to take in a motion for the amendment of the rules and guide the Senate through the amendment process. Senator Ita Enang in his statement to the police made it clear that at no time in the life of the 7th Senate were the rules amended. If there is anybody who should know, it is Enang.

Ekweremadu stated this in his reaction to his arraignment at a Federal High Court for alleged forgery of the Standing Rule of the Senate in 2015.

The Deputy Senate President in a statement he endorsed said it should not be mistaken that he, Senate President, Bukola Saraki or the other two accused persons, are on trial.
He noted that rather than them, the hallowed democratic principles of separation of powers, rule of law, the legislature itself, and indeed democracy are on a “ridiculous trial”.
He said: “I presented myself to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court today as an ordinary citizen of this great nation to plead not guilty to charges I did not and could not have committed.
“It is deeply troubling to note that people in high places who swore to uphold the law have dwindled into purveyors of falsehood and rumours who seek to smear and tarnish the reputation of law-abiding and responsible citizens as well as cripple the hallowed institutions of democracy.
“It is all the more disheartening that people who should know better use the colour of their office to pursue private vendetta against people they disagree with

The outgoing Deputy Consul-General of the United States, U.S, in Lagos, Ms Dehab Ghebreab, has advised
Niger-Delta youths to desist from every form of militancy, noting that the violence perpetrated by militants affects not only Nigerians but people of other countries.
Ghebreab, who spoke while addressing journalists in Lagos, harped on the need for the militants to channel their grievances to the government, rather than engaging in the destruction of facilities.
According to her, “Youths in the Niger-Delta should not resort to violence because violence is really destructive.
“They need to know that violence or militancy does not only affect people living in their region, but may also affect other countries.
“They should know that foreign companies are also doing businesses in Nigeria and that some may just want to come to Nigeria, but would only be ready to invest in places where their businesses would be safe,’’ she said.
Ghebreab, who acknowledged ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to ensure peace in the region, enjoined the government to redouble its efforts at making the planned dialogue with the militants a reality.

The House of Representatives yesterday expressed readiness to interface with the relevant authorities to ensure the release of an outstanding N35, 824, 488, 493. 27 for the Presidential Amnesty Office in the 2016 budget as part of plans to appease aggrieved militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
The release, it was learnt, is to enable the payment of arrears of stipends to 25,000 former agitators, in-training allowances, tuition fees and other commitments.
Adopting a motion sponsored by Ekpenyong Essien Ayi (Bakassi: Cross River: PDP) and 29 others, the chamber also urged the authorities to formulate a sustainable plan to end militancy in the area.
At the plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Sulaimon Yussuff Lassun, the lawmakers enjoined the restive militants to embrace dialogue and allow peace reign in the region.
Ayi noted that of the N55, 824, 488, 493. 27 proposed by the amnesty office, it was only N20, 000, 000, 000. 00 that was approved in the 2016 budget recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

China are ordering Apple to stop selling its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones in Beijing due to a patent infringement, according to reports.
The two phone models are said to infringe on an exterior design patent held by Chinese firm Shenzhen Baili for a smartphone called the 100C, The Wall Street Journal reports. Apple is filing an administrative litigation to reverse the ban, Engadget reports.

Two people were killed Friday after a small plane they were in crashed into a town house in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne, authorities said.
A Los Angeles County fire dispatcher said nobody on the ground was hurt.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) announced a series of long-awaited enhancements to its App Store on Wednesday, but the new features may not ease concerns of developers and analysts who say that the App Store model - and the very idea of the single-purpose app - has seen its best days.
The revamped App Store will let developers advertise their wares in search results and give developers a bigger cut of revenues on subscription apps, while Apple said it has already dramatically sped up its app-approval process.
The goal is to sustain the virtuous cycle at the heart of the hugely lucrative iPhone business. Software developers make apps for the iPhone because its customers are willing to pay, and those customers, in turn, pay a premium for the device because it has the best apps.
The store is now more strategically important than ever for Apple as sales of the iPhone begin to level off and the company looks to software and services to fill the gap. Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a recent conference call that App Store revenues were up 35 percent over last year.

A new militant group,the Ultimate Warriors of Niger Delta, UWND, has emerged in the oil-rich region southern Nigeria. The group announced its existence on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 presenting a string of demands to the Nigerian government.The Ultimate Warriors threatened to continue vandalism in the Niger Delta if their demands are not met by the federal government.

Among the UWND demands are that 60% of oil blocs should be owned by the Niger Delta region and the immediate commencement of academic at Federal Maritime University
The new militant group which spoke for the very first time on Wednesday also demanded that the federal government allow the $16 billion export processing zone otherwise called Delta Gas City project begin operations in earnest.
The group, gave the government a two-week ultimatum to ensure that their demands were adequately met for a lasting ceasefire in the region.
Spokesperson of the Ultimate Warriors, as it chose to be addressed, Sibiri Taiowoh, in a statement said if the FG truly wants peace in the region, it should award 60 per cent oil bloc to indigenous people from the region as its primary demand for a ceasefire.
The Punch reports that UWND further asked for commencement of academic activities at Federal Maritime University established during the regime of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Warning further, it said failure to meet its demands, would warrant total shutting down of vital oil facilities including Chevron BOP, Okan Platform, MEREN Gas Gathering Compression Platform and Chevron Tank Farm.
