Nigeria is set to experience an annular solar eclipse that will be visible all over the country with different degrees of totality on September 1, 2016, even as astronomers in the United States (U.S.) prepare for a spectacle of solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer. The term eclipse is most often used to describe either a solar eclipse, when the Moon’s shadow crosses the Earth’s surface, or a lunar eclipse, when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow.Annular solar eclipses have a “ring of fire” and occurs when the Moon moves in front of the Sun but does not cover the Sun’s discs completely. The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), said yesterday that the highest degree of obscurity in Nigeria during this natural occurrence will be in the southern part of the country particularly in Lagos where it is expected to have 80 per cent obscurity while the lowest degree of obscurity will be about 45 per cent and this will be observed in the northern part of the country, particularly in Sokoto.Head of Media and Corporate Communications of NASRDA, Dr. Felix Ale, in a statement said the annular eclipse would be observed as a partial or near total eclipse across the country with Abuja the Federal Capital Territory expected to be about 60 per cent. The annular eclipse is expected to occur between 7:15 a.m. and 10:03 a.m. with Read full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/08/nigeria-to-experience-annular-eclipse.html?m=1

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Segun Enikuemehin, who dared to ask some military men who were assaulting a civilian to desist from such a dastardly act is currently at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) with one of his eyes totally damaged. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when Mr. Enikuemehin came upon the military men beating a harmless civilian. Convinced that the military officials would beat the man to death if nothing was done, he reportedly walked up the angry soldiers and pleaded that they let the man go or hand him over to the police if he had done something illegal. The military men would not take such effrontery lightly as they descended on the Good Samaritan and started beating him as well. But not even the beating from the soldiers would discourage him, and he managed amidst his own beating to rescue the already battered man, whom he then took to the Adekunle Police station at Ebute Metta. Our sources say that thereafter, Mr. Enikuemehin led the police back to the venue of the incident. Upon sighting him in the company of the policemen, the soldiers, who were by that time already cooling off at a nearby beer parlor, became even enraged and descended on Mr. Enikuemehin, during which they eye was plucked out. The damaged eye was reportedly picked from the ground and the man rushed down to the Read full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/08/man-eye-is-been-plucke-out-by-nigeria.html?m=1

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, in Abuja on Friday said he was willing to enter into negotiation with the Federal Government to secure his release and end the political crisis which has continued to trail his continued incarceration. He also denied claims that he was working with some militant groups in the Niger Delta region, including the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta and Niger Delta Avengers.Speaking through his lawyers, Ifeanyi Ejiofor and Amobi Nzelu, at a press briefing, Kanu said he was not opposed to negotiation to secure his freedom from detention which he described as “politically motivated and orchestrated.”They however said the IPOB leader would not renounce his ideology for him to be released, because “IPOB is bigger than him.” Ejiofor said, “Kanu will not renounce his ideology, IPOB is bigger than him. He cannot say yes or no to renouncing it. But he is opened to political resolutions of the problem. Nobody has approached him for negotiation where he is kept. President Muhammadu Buhari said, yesterday, that Nigerians were suffering today because of the sudden drop in the price of crude oil in the international market. The President, who stated this while playing host the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, and United Nations’ Under-Secretary-General, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, in Abuja, however, said his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability was serving the country in good stead, despite severe shortage of resources in the country. He said: “It has been a very difficult year for Nigeria. Before we came to office, petroleum sold for about $100 per barrel, then it crashed to $37, and now oscillates between $40 and $45 per barrel. Suddenly, we’re a poor country, but commitment to transparency and accountability is not making people know that there is severe shortage.” Asking UNFPA to bear with Nigeria in whichever area the country could not live up to its responsibilities at present, the President said exploding population and different cultural practices in the country provided fertile ground for research to organizations such as UNFPA. He thanked the UN agency for its commitment to saving lives in Nigeria, particularly of women and children. On food security, President Buhari said reports from the North-East of the country were encouraging, saying people were returning to their farmlands, with the guarantee of relative security. Prof Osotimehin, a former Minister of Health in Nigeria, said UNFPA was determined to promote health care facilities across the country, noting that reduction of Read more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/08/buharinigeria-is-poor-country.html#more

Nigeria has lost its crown as the economic King of Africa to South Africa and now ranks as Africa’s second largest economy consecutive years.According to Bloomberg and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Nigeria is enriched With a gross domestic product (GDP) of $296 billion. Many factors have however affected the economy of the most populous black Nation and has now succumbed to South Africa as the economic ‘Giant’ of the African continent. Here are major reasons why Nigeria lost its place: CRUDE OIL CRASH According to Lukman Otunuga, research analyst at Forex Time (FXTM), the crash in oil prices on the international market is the prime reason Nigeria, an oil-dependent nation, lost its place to South Africa. “The extended periods of depressed oil prices and persistent global uncertainty have caused the world’s previous largest economy in Africa known as Nigeria to lose its title to South Africa,” Otunuga said. Oil prices have fallen by over 65 percent since 2014, having a direct toll on the Nigerian economy. NAIRA ‘FLOATING’ DEVALUATION South Africa’s economy regained the position of Africa’s largest in dollar terms, due to the crash of the naira against the dollar. As the naira fell against the dollar, the South African rand — on the other hand — appreciated against the dollar. In 2016 alone, the rand has appreciated by over 10 percent against the dollar, while the naira has fallen by over 40 percent. Analysts believe that if the naira was floated earlier in the life of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the over 40 percent drop from 197 to 310 against the dollar could have been avoided. Though attempts have been made to assure Nigerians that there are no plans to increase the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly referred to as petrol, AKELICIOUS has gathered that the actual price at which the product should sell at filling stations is N151.87 per litre. This “realistic” price is more than the maximum N145 per litre fixed by the Federal Government on May 11, 2016 when it liberalised the downstream oil sector, marketers with knowledge of the market and the pricing mechanism told one of our correspondents on Tuesday. This, they said, was basically due to the continued scarcity of the United States dollar, adding that the true price of petrol was N151.87 litre, judging by the current ex-depot price of the commodity. In Tuesday’s exclusive report by The PUNCH on a looming hike in petrol price, dealers explained that the ex-depot price of the product was N133.28 per litre and that the marketers were doing their best to manage the situation. They stressed that the dollar hit an all-time high last week, as it exchanged for N400 at the parallel market, and called for urgent steps to address the situation in order to sell the PMS at the approved rates. In a move to avert a price increase, it was learnt that the government conveyed a meeting of stakeholders in the downstream oil sector on Tuesday, which was held at the headquarters of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency in Abuja. One of our correspondents gathered that participants at the meeting included officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the PPPRA, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association, Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners, as well as other concerned persons. Explaining that the actual cost of the PMS had increased beyond the N145 per litre fixed rate, an oil dealer who attended the meeting stated that when the distribution margin for petrol was added to the ex-depot price, the real cost of the commodity was N151.87 per litre. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, said, “Since the ex-depot price is around N133.5 per litre and the selling price is N145 litre, when you remove the ex-depot cost from the selling price, you’ll get about N12. Now, from this N12, consider the distribution margin and other costs from the depot; if all these costs are less than N12, then the marketers are Read more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/08/marketerspetrol-should-sell-for.html

There are a lot of myths surrounding what pregnant women should eat, and what they should avoid. Here's a pregnancy diet reality check to help separate fact from fiction. Can pregnant women eat runny eggs?
