The National Association of Nigerian Students has threatened to boycott the 2019 general elections should the Federal Government fail to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The chairman of the Abuja chapter of NANS, Mojeed Omolaja, stated this in Abuja on Wednesday at a one-day conference organised by Online Publishers Association of Nigeria with the theme: “Free Press and objective reporting in the 2019 election year.” He also distanced the FCT chapter of NANS from the faction of NANS led by one Akpan Daniels Bamidele who was said to be a student of Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The Bamidele-led NANS had visited President Muhammadu Buhari where he endorsed his re-election. Omolaja insisted that the NANS officials who paid courtesy call to the President were not fair, adding that the FCT chapter of NANS stood for integrity. He said, “We in the FCT here are not part of those who went to eulogise the President; we stand for integrity and anything we get right in FCT will be got right in all the states of the federation because we lead and others follow. “The Nigerian students will not vote in the forthcoming election if academic activities do not resume in the universities. “In this forthcoming elections, we the FCT chapter of NANS that controls other chairmen in other states have deemed it fit not to participate in the election until when ASUU calls off the strike, because they can’t be playing with our future. “Their children are going to school abroad and we are here and they still want their children to come and rule over us with their lackadaisical attitude towards our education. It is quite unfortunate that at this point in time students are at home doing nothing. “The major reason we are at home is that ASUU is on strike and we expect the Federal Government to meet their demands because this incessant issue is a catastrophic setback to the students. “Imagine somebody spending seven to eight years to finish a four-year programme. It is not done abroad. Is it because our parents don’t have the financial muscle to send us abroad?” https://punchng.com/we-wont-vote-if-academic-activities-dont-resume-in-varsities-nans/ |

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Senatorial Candidate for Benue South, Abba Moro, on Tuesday criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, saying that the party promised Nigerians change but ended up bringing pains and hardship to the people. Moro stated this during the inauguration of his ward-to-ward campaign in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state. He urged the people to vote for all the candidates of the PDP in the 2019 elections. “The All Progressives Congress promised Nigerians change but ended up in bringing pain and hardship to Nigerians,” he said. The former Minister of Interior challenged his opponents to name projects they attracted to Benue South while they were in power. He added, “Many people will come here to seek your votes. They will call us names, they would say unprintable things against my person but we should not hesitate to ask them to name projects they were able to bring to our community while they were in power. “We have a candidate who was a deputy governor for eight years. We have a candidate who was a Permanent Secretary for years. Kindly tell them to name people they empowered or projects they were able to put up in our land. “I was doing well as lecturer before I ventured into politics, not because I was poor but because I needed to help my people back home.” The former chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area said he was able to create employment opportunities for people from Benue South as Minister of Interior under the last administration. “Some of you can attest to the fact that I helped many of our sons and daughters, especially the youth while serving as a minister. “If you go to Civil Defence, Fire Service, Immigration and Prisons, you will see our people there. I was able to fix them there as a minister. “In 2015, people voted for change and today we have seen the outcome of the so-called change. People now live from hand to mouth, no food. There is hunger everywhere in the land. Is this the change you want? “Send me to Abuja and you shall see the outcome,” Moro said. The PDP candidate for Otukpo/Ohimini Federal Constituency, Johnson Ahubi, warned the people of Benue South against wasting their votes on other candidates. https://punchng.com/abba-moro-says-apc-promised-change-but-brought-pains/ |

ABUJA – THE cold relationship between the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, was openly displayed, Tuesday, in Abuja during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, with the former refusing to accept handshake extended to him by the police boss. Both were at the event held at the National Archade, Abuja, to mark the climax of the activities of the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration. The police chief, who was standing near the mounted podium at the event, had saluted the Senate President, preparatory to a handshake as has been the practice, but instead of walking towards Idris to accept the handshake from him, the Senate President steadily looked at him and walked away to shake the service chiefs who were standing together with the IGP. But the case was different with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who had arrived at the occasion not only in company of the Senate President, but also took walked to the podium to take salutes at the same time. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/01/breaking-saraki-snubs-igp-idris-at-armed-forces-remembrance-day/amp/

ABUJA – The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress APC, Yekini Nabena has accused the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP of hiring a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC as an ‘election consultant’ as part of last-minute strategy to win the forthcoming polls at all costs. Speaking Sunday in Abuja, Nabena, who declined to to disclose the name of the former INEC chairman, however challenged the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to deny the allegation and equally charged relevant authorities to investigate the veracity of his allegation. “Following the exposure of the PDP’s initial plot to use Russian hackers to compromise INEC servers, the PDP has now hired a former INEC Chairman as an election consultant. This INEC Chairman was notorious for rigging elections for the PDP over the years. “The plan is to use INEC officials who remain loyal to the former INEC Chairman and under his payroll to compromise the system from within.” Nabena said. Asked to comment on the uproar that greeted the recent appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari as chair of INEC’s ad hoc committee on National Collation Centre for the 2019 elections, the Bayelsa-born APC Chieftain said Nigerians should not be deceived by the PDP-sponsored protest and fake news over her appointment. “The baseless protest is a ploy to create a distraction for their (PDP’s) election rigging and hacking plans. “The PDP has deliberately chosen to be blind to the fact that Mrs. Amina Zakari is not a blood relation of the President as it alleges. In fact, her appointment was done by their very own former President Goodluck Jonathan. “Besides, INEC has publicly stated the roles of its recently inaugurated adhoc committees. The collation centre committee chaired by Mrs. Amina Zakari is in charge of operational logistics of the centre such as electricity, internet, live transmission as well as accreditation for access to the ICC and security of the venue. “Mrs. Amina Zakari’s committee is not saddled with actual collation of results. Only the chairman of INEC, who is the returning officer for presidential election, decides the validity of votes”, he said. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/01/rigging-plot-pdp-hires-former-inec-chairman-as-election-consultant-nabena/amp/

Atiku also, yesterday, distanced himself from what he described as a video he claimed was concocted by the Buhari campaign to the effect that he planned to hand over a portion of Borno State to Boko Haram in a peace deal. In a statement issued on his behalf by his media adviser, Mr. Paul Ibe, Atiku recalled injunctions against the use of state resources for political campaigns as given by the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. In the statement, he said: “We wish to remind President Buhari and the APC that the use of state videos released by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture is illegal under the Electoral Act 2010 as amended. “The media is awash with advertisements with the hashtag #PMBDIDIT and signed by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture and referencing so-called achievements of the APC administration in the states of Abia, Kwara, Lagos, Ebonyi, Delta and Kano, among others. ‘’These are without doubt 2019 presidential campaign materials produced by the Ministry of Information and Culture using state resources and apparatuses to benefit President Buhari. (See attached videos). “This appalling conduct, which is clearly in violation of Section 100 of the Electoral Act, is even more shocking when it is recalled that the state resources being used to the illegal advantage of President Buhari are being drawn from agencies, which, for over three years prior to this election, failed to perform their duties to the benefit of Nigerian citizens. The Ministry of Information and Culture must stop this illegality immediately. “We demand that INEC issues an immediate cease and desist order to both the Ministry of Information and Culture and to the broadcast channels running it. “We also insist that INEC register the media spend behind it as part of the APC’s total N1 billion campaign spend limit. Meanwhile, the PDP has called for an urgent meeting with INEC to discuss issues arising from reports on PVC buying.
