Okon Lagos Launches Attitudinal Action campaign: #DoTheRightThingNow

There was an outpour of praises on the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, for his philanthropic gestures to the citizens of the state.

The commendations were made on Monday when the Special Assistant to the Governor on Ethical and Social Reorientation, Mr. Ime Bishop Umoh, led the Right Attitude Campaign group to the Ministry of Women Affairs Children Rehabilitation Home, with loads of relief materials to the inmates.

Mr. Ime Bishop stated that the gesture was to afford the inmates,a sense of belonging and to make them know that they are a part of the society, saying that the extension of the Governor's arm of love shows that they are part of the Akwa Ibom project

He sensitized the inmates on the need to shun all forms of social vices and turn a new leaf in order for them to be discharged from the remand home, saying: “In line with the Dakkada philosophy, you need to rise to the faith of that greatness which you were destined to be.

“For you to be great, you must learn to #DoTheRightThingNow. And for you to do the right thing, you must turn a new leaf and shun every form of social vices and whatsoever crime that led you to the remand home.”
The New Media Aide to Governor Udom Emmanuel, Mrs. Meflyn Anwana, admonished the children to love God and live right as the society awaits their productive contribution ,she added that they can achieve all they want to become in good faith only if they believe, live right and make the best of every phase of their lives
It would be recalled that Governor Emmanuel had emphatically noted that the life of every Akwa Ibom person means a lot to him.
The Supervisor to the rehabilitation centre, Mrs. Comfort Benjamin, thanked the Governor for remembering the rehabilitation centre after it had long been forgotten. She noted that majority of the inmates who are mainly children ranging from 10 to 18 years of age, were not based on criminal offences, but as the result of failed relationships.

Also, the manager of the home, Elder Anietie Etukudoh, while lamenting the challenges faced in reforming the lives of the inmates, said that most of them whose parents are nowhere to be found, try to run away, narrating a scenario where a girl attempted to jump over the fence and escape.
He however thanked Governor Emmanuel for his humanitarian gesture, and prayed for God’s blessings upon him, stating that most parents, when reconciled to their children, express appreciation to the government for taking care of the children whom they had lost hope of seeing again thinking that they were dead.
The interactive session saw the children aspiring to be great people in the society with the tall dreams of becoming actors, presidents and several other quality positions.
Also, in the meeting were Ndifreke Patrick - Executive Director of Greater Tomorrow Initiative. Kusin Ekanem, Executive Director , Mentoring for Excellence , the programme coordinator of Heroes of Excellence , Joyce Essien,Joseph Bassey of M and E specialist. EYF, Goodnews Nelson of Youths for Change Initiative and Kingsley Atang the Publicity/Outreach Coordinator Youth Alive Foundation.

The Right Attitude Campaign is a group powered by the office of the Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Ethical and Social Reorientation, Mr. Ime Bishop Umoh, to sensitize the general public to #DoTheRightThingNow.

It campaigns for a change of attitudinal behaviour with several inscriptions such as: “Today’s Juvenile Delinquent Becomes Tomorrow’s Notorious Criminal”; “This Is Akwa Ibom, Love Is Us”; “A Broken Home Today Breeds A Broken Society Tomorrow”; “Don’t Destroy Akwa Ibom With Your Mouth Or Pen”; “I Am An Akwa Ibomite, I Rise To The Faith Of Greatness” DAKKADA Kpon Ebe Owo, "DAKKADA Kpon Anwaan Owo", to mention but a few.

BLOGGER JAMIL MABAI ARRESTED FOR CRITICISING GOVERNOR MASARI FOR BUYING COFFINS

THE police in Katsina said yesterday that it arrested Blogger, Jamil Mabai for criticising the purchase of 3000 coffins for distribution to mosques by the state governor, Aminu Masari.

Mabai had criticised the rationale behind the purchase of 3000 coffins at N40,000 each when the governor is yet to pay outstanding salary to civil servants in the State.

He wondered whether the governor wants the people of the State to die with the purchase of the coffins.

Justifying his arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Katsina State, Usman Abdulahi said... Click here to read more http://www.akstrending.com/2016/09/blogger-jamil-mabai-arrested-for.html?m=1

PoliticsPdp Legal Adviser In Embezzlement Adventure. *** Lands Gov Udom In Trouble As I by akstrending(op): 1:31pm On Sep 18, 2016
PDP LEGAL ADVISER IN EMBEZZLEMENT ADVENTURE.

*** LANDS GOV UDOM IN TROUBLE AS IKONO MASS DEFECTION TO APC LOOMS.

...AS GODDY UMOH DISAPPEARS WITH 2MILLION PLUS.

By Moses Edem

If care is not well taken, all efforts made by the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel to ensure that all the facets of these society enjoy dividend of Democracy may be jeopardized in Ikono local government Area as a result of incessant sharp practice by the state Legal Adviser of PDP, Barr. Goddy Umoh, himself a native of the area.

Some months ago, the said Umoh, was accused of anti party activities and betrayal of the governor on the Front Page of The Post Newspaper, a publication he is yet to refute.

Suffice to add that, his aide, Mr. Idongesit Ukaetuk was in the last dispensation allegedly indulging in this anti party activities, a case where all party officers drew the attention of the then Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio and that eventually led to the removal of Barr. Goddy Umoh as a commissioner.

Bittered by the removal, Umoh surrendered his polling unit to his then benefactor, Sen. John James Udoedehe and PDP lost woefully.

Why do I need to recall this stale news? It's is as a result of the recent happenings in the society, if not clearly stalemate, it may lead to another blow on the governor.

Recently, the governor in his magnanimity doled out twenty million Naira each to all the thirty one local government areas across the state. In Ikono, the cheque was received by Barr. Goddy Umoh, who was the resource person nominated in 2015 in the area by the Ukana cabal where his unalloyed loyalty lies.

To the surprise of everyone. Umoh, singlehandedly seized the sum of two million naira, claiming that he was mandated by the governor to use the cash and pay the governor's brother, sister and relatives.

The issue, initially triggered queries, investigations and gnashing of teeth. Politicians wondered why the governor should be so interested in money meant for Ikono people, when other Local Government Areas had their fair share of largess.

It was later discovered that, the claim by Barr. Goddy Umoh, was into a daylight robbery. As such, the Special Assistant to the governor on Interministerial, Hon. Jack Essien decided to clear his doubt by sending him this message, "I've made calls to my contacts across the state and have discovered that no single local government has done any PR with the money His Excellency the Governor graciously made available for the people. As a Special Assistant to the Governor I have the right to advise that it will be in our common interest if you call another meeting and redistribute the 2m naira to the eleven wards in Ikono to touch some more people at the electoral units as intended by the governor. This is my humble advice, Sir. Thanks. Jack Essien."

Our reporter on contacting Goddy Umoh had it claimed that the said Jack Essien, Hon Victor Udofia and Hon Iboro Ekanem who are all public officers holders in Ikono submitted to his argument on PR but later reacted as he refused to yield to their pressure of giving them a fair share of the 2million naira agreed for PR to government house family. On noticing that it was a dubious act, Goddy Umoh changed his rhythm by claiming that the cash was meant for Udom key men in power.

Till date, no one in Ikono knows the fate of the embezzled 2million naira. Already the cash has developed turmoil between different segments of Ikono people.

"A leader should be sincere, takes into cognisance the dreams and aspirations of his boss. Goddy Umoh Is not helping the government in this aspect. He has succeeded in heating up the politics of Ikono with more decampees. This is the same way he behaved many years ago with my Boss Godswill Akpabio with embezzlement of election funds that caused his removal as Chairman election committee to Hon Clement Bassey as replacement. It later escalated to his position as Commissioner being sacrificed" Hon Jack Essien deposited.

It behooves on the governor to proffer solution to this pressing saga which has thrown the political class of Ikono into disrepute.

Umoh knows what he is trying to achieve, it is left for the governor to keep an eye on his gambit else by tomorrow, he may be surprised by what the actions and inactions of Barr. Goddy Umoh will cause to his political future.

BusinessFeature : Akbc And Its Notorious Banana Peels by akstrending(op): 8:02am On Sep 13, 2016
By Ndiana Ekpenyong|Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation is an agency of the Government of Akwa Ibom State with the larger canvas of its work force being civil servants. There are also adhoc-staff and independent producers. Considered as a family, the State’s radio and television are both on the stable of AKBC. Both units share facilities and personnel and a Director-General as the General Overseer. Unfortunately, this mouthpiece of Government has become slippery with the erection of banana peels by saboteurs who have elevated their dubious economic interest far and above public good and interest.

Recently AKBC has been in the news for a twisted reason. In a publication reasoned as inane and entitled AKBC D-G in N30m Scandal, Top Directors in Dirty Fight for D-G’s Post, the report left no one in doubt as to its target and mission. To give a semblance of honest reportage, there is a conscious blend of facts and fiction to confuse the reading public and those familiar with the goings-on at AKBC.

But by this strategy, the report has unwittingly betrayed its insider connection thus affirming the publication as targeted. It is an obnoxious character trait that often constrains many to accept the not so complimentary reference of civil servants as “evil servants” as valid. It is the putrid moral behavior some of them gleefully exude that has given rise to this entrenched public perception.

Fortunately AKBC has been presided over back to back by men of God of the stature of Pastors. It is an advantage that ought to shape the attitude ad conduct of its workforce. But sadly, this has been of little consequence as the people have persisted in their old ways with murkier dimension added as if to achieve a full cycle.

Not even the calm mien, accessible nature, understanding character, winsome manners, genial behavior, simplicity and general warmth of Pastor Anietie Ukpe, former Chief Press Secretary to the former governor, Senator Godswill Akpabio have compelled a change of ways by these saboteurs who act as people sold to an evil cause.

The publication conveying the N30million Scandal is the machination of these saboteurs who believe that the DG, Pastor Ukpe should be punished for daring to bring to an end the routine sabotage that has become entrenched as a tradition in AKBC. To end the sabotage, some minor reforms had to be carried out by way of rotation or transfer of staff.

Some of the affected staff saw the action as a shove that had become a push and so had to make a brutal re-launch with the intent to annihilate their common enemy being the DG using any method conceivable. The method they considered plausible and effective was a scandal that bordered on fiscal responsibility. In their warped thinking, that would earn the DG a sack and a replacement with one of them for a convenient return to status quo-ante. We would return the issue of N30million later.

Let us x-ray Pastor Ukpe’s stewardship so far with AKBC. His appointment as DG, AKBC came in July 2015 and he resumed on July 17, 2015. There were misgivings among workers of the corporation who felt that the Director-General ought to have come from among them.

But Pastor Ukpe, a long standing journalism practitioner in the State who is at home with his colleagues was a soothing balm that he is on account of his personal qualities including people skills. The corporation quickly held a meeting and accepted him as one of their own. And so unlike the resistance appointees face in other such corporations, Pastor Ukpe, on account of his common touch walked into the warm embrace of convivial members of AKBC family.

Sometime in November, 2015, the executive governor of the State, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel was scheduled to be on live broadcast with the State’s broadcast station. Curiously, there was a report that the transmitter which had been in use before then had shut down. Frantic efforts were made to resuscitate the transmitter but to no avail.

Management had to go to NTA to negotiate for the use of its transmitter while AKBC used its Outside Broadcasting Van (OB Van) to transmit that broadcast. Stories of sabotage filtered to the DG’s ears who warned the staff against such insidious act. He called on all to pray against such satanic development warning that he is a pastor who believes in prayers. But before this, the man in charge of the transmitter collected various sums for the rehabilitation of the said transmitter but failed to deliver.

At another time, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh called the Director-General informing him of the Governor’s intention to give a live broadcast.

The DG alerted everybody to prepare for the important guest the station was going to host. Before one could snap a finger, there was a report of the malfunctioning of the transmitter. The DG was alarmed. Every effort to fix the transmitter for that event was futile.

Fortunately, the event was cancelled as the Governor had to travel abroad. But the DG realized at that point that an insider sabotage was afoot. “I began to piece together snippets of report I had from some of the workers. It was unbelievable to contemplate such unethical behavior by someone employed by the same Governor and Government he is sabotaging”, the Director-General observed with dismay.

Then came another live broadcast. The DG said that based on previous experiences, he refused to inform those on the transmitter but shared the information as classified with other relevant units. The DG said that strangely, Engineer Emman Akpan who headed the transmitter unit called him to complain over why his unit was no informed of the planned Governor’s broadcast.

The DG said he apologized to him and accepted responsibility for that information lacuna. This was on Saturday. But to the DG’s dismay, he was informed on Sunday, the day of broadcast that the transmitter had shut down. He rushed to the station to ascertain the veracity of the alarming report. This singular act confirmed all previous suspicious. The incensed Director-General informed them that if the transmitter did not work, he was going to report them to the Governor as well as recommend them for dismissal.

He told them that it was the fear of the sabotage that they have carried out that restrained him from informing them of the Governor’s intending broadcast. He accused them of working from within as black legs and APC agents that are determined to sabotage government’s efforts. The then head of Engineering Department, Rev. James Okorie told the DG with every ounce of certainty that the transmitter would work when those behind it want it to work. The fuming DG walked out of the transmitting room to wait outside. Shockingly and in line with Rev. Okorie’s observation, the transmitter began to work again about an hour later.

It was at this point that it became clear that reforms were inevitable to break the ranks of the masterminds of these machinations. The DG asked for the rotation of the engineers to break that stranglehold of monotony. For doing this, the DG had sinned and come short of their mercy. But the challenge was not over. Not long after then, the transmitter was again railroaded into a cul de sac. It stopped working and ABKC programmes had to be transmitted on startimes platform. The complaint this time was a component called grid module.

The DG was inundated with suggestions of what should be done to restore the grid module. Before now, the repair of the grid module was a regular occurrence. The so called repair had become a goldmine for some people as they unconscionably deployed this stratagem to fleece the corporation of various sums of money. This time, they proposed that the grid module be sent to Italy for repairs.

To do this, about N2million was to be set aside. In the face of the present economic dire-strait, expending such amount did not appear to be a wise course of action. So management had to put on its thinking cap to explore for alternative option. It was the exploration of this option that led to the discovery of one Engineer Mfon Inyang, a staff of AKBC who was said to be adept in the repairs of transmitters and was already handling those of Abia and Cross River States. The DG sent for him and upon enquiry and satisfaction on his competence asked him to join in exploring for a lasting solution for the perennial challenges brought about by the corporation’s transmitter.

Engineer Mfon Inyang who was supposed to join Engineer Emman Akpan, the head of the Unit and others in finding a solution to the crisis met a lot of frustrations. He did not have the co-operation of those in the unit who had constituted themselves into a formidable obstacle and could also hardly be availed with materials like schematics diagram of the grid module to facilitate understanding and possible repairs. And more than anything else, the erected banana peels to ensure that Mfon’s efforts failed.

The insider abuse continued with accusations and various reports to the DG that Mfon was on the concluding verge of facilitating the obituary of the transmitter. The head of the Unit, Engineer Emman Akpan who refused to show up while Engineer Mfon battled with the transmitter advised the DG to withdraw Mfon without delay from the unit. But the DG showed firmness and encouraged Mfon to continue.

Faced with many frustrations, Engineer Mfon Inyang invited one Engineer Clement Bassey from Abuja. When Engineer Clement arrived, he asked for the head of the unit and log book. Still, Engr. Emman Akpan refused to subscribe his co-operation. He rather reiterated to the DG of the need to send the duo away or be ready to witness the complete destruction of the transmitter.

But using the log book and know how Clement and Mfon were able to use exciter to start the transmitter but that provided very limited reach. They had also gone to Onitsha to purchase capacitors which they fitted and loaded on the transmitter. On September 5, a full repair of the transmitter was achieved by a staff of AKBC assisted by Engineer Clement Bassey from Abuja. More than half of the cost proposed by Engineer Emman Akpan for repairs in Italy was saved.

It would be recalled that Engineer Emmanuel while serving as head of the transmitter unit worked with Engineer Eke Ekpoh. It is said that Engineer Eke has no official relationship with AKBC but operated on terms and agreement only known to him and Emman Akpan. According to insider source, the clarification is necessary in the face of insinuations that Engineer Eke is consultant to AKBC. The insider is quoted to have said that no document exist to give this claim any force of validity. Of course Engineer Emma Akpan and about five other staff of AKBC that worked under him while heading the transmitter unit have all been transferred out of that unit. That unit is now headed by Engineer Mfon Inyang.

Let us return to the touted missing N30million. It is the transfer of these dubious personnel that has raked up the scandal of the missing N30million which is as porous as it is deficit of truth. When Governor Udom Emmanuel approved the subvention of N30million to AKBC, Pastor Ukpe did not only announce it to management, he also shared the information with other members of staff.

According to a reliable source, the money was lodged at Keystone Bank with authorization to source for and transfer foreign exchange for the purchase of UPS that would protect the transmitter, inverter and other accessories. It is to also procure components for the rehabilitation of an abandoned transmitter that would serve as alternative. Unfortunately, keystone Bank was unable to get the requisite foreign exchange to transfer for the purchases.

The said sum was moved to Union Bank which has recently acquired some but not all the foreign exchange outlay yet. According to the source, as soon as the equivalent outlay is gotten, the money would be transferred accordingly for the purchases. The source stated emphatically that the money is intact and has not been tampered with in any way whatsoever. The source further reiterated that the said position is verifiable.

It is unfortunate that we come from a clime where those who commit moral felony carry with them vengeful hearts rather than remorseful hearts. There is the erroneous belief that everything about government should be a duplicitous transaction. And anybody who attempts to stop such transaction is an enemy that should be crushed, vilified or scandalized. That sadly is Pastor Ukpe’s burden. He rose against entrenched impunity and the reactionary forces are up against him with a scandal that borders on fiscal rascality.

The laissez-faire nature of the civil service has encouraged acts of impunity and attitudinal challenges. The civil servant is deluded with the illusion of security in the service. The reality of the many hurdles to scale before he is punished with dismissal for serial official breaches has fastened them to the cesspool of impunity. They know that they can always get away with any breach.

There is the need for a re-orientation of the civil servants to reinvent in them the culture of ownership or entitlement. Let them know that if they fleece the system, they are fleecing themselves. The civil service must also expand its statute’s book to incorporate deterring actions that would curtail the excesses of some civil servants so that a culture of discipline, anti-corruption and decency can be sustained.

CareerWhy There Is Hunger On The Streets Of Akwa Ibom By Cavil Inwang by akstrending(op): 10:07pm On Sep 01, 2016
WHY THERE IS HUNGER ON THE STREETS OF AKWA IBOM
BY Cavil Inwang

Growing up as a younger man, on the streets of Uyo, I had already acquired experience a little too vast for my age.

As at 2008, I started work as a phone repair Engineer/technician at the popular Ibom Plaza. During this period, I had my initiation into the 'Street' business experience.

You will agree with me that today's Akwa Ibom is not the same as yesterday's.

Back then I was so discouraged by peers, friends, cousins, and relationships who probably thought I was stooping too low to become a road side 'Phone Repairer'

But I never gave up, because I was determined to make a difference, have always wished to promote the reputation of my State, Akwa Ibom, in whatever way I could, including offering solutions that were difficult to come by.

I saw people who were like me, who had the same enthusiasm, some more determined than I was.

Now, how did we get here? Today we no longer use our hands to work; we are not ready to sacrifice; to follow instructions, be loyal, dedicated and committed.

We've, lost guts for sincerity and our conscience has grown weed, we now rely on Living a lie and trading falsehood for plates of breakfast.

Our success and hope are now based on the promises of mankind. We've betrayed the pledge of our national anthem.
The love and fear of God have all departed from us, as we now drug ourselves with opium served by agents who tell us we are good to go when we are not even ready.

Coming generations are unlucky and, yet unborn, are disappointed by our actions and inactions. Trust me, our parental upbringing is wailing for more attention.

The Youth plays a very important role in the society, but in Akwa Ibom that role has lost it value. Every Youth you see making it, can attribute his success to governments and Politicans.

This has to stop, we have to wake up and realize that a system built to divide, impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do.

We must apprehend, disarm and deescalate this negative mindset of ours. We've all been given a package to sell, how ready are we to market this package?

Governor Udom Emmanuel has come to deliver good governance in the fertile ground of Akwa Ibom State. It will take our collective effort to promote, discuss, defend, support and uphold the economic importance of Akwa Ibom State to the world and to prospective investors, irrespective of your political affiliation.

Numerous milestones have been set up, investors have been contacted, lands purchased, some given, ground breakings done. But the street sector finds itself missing in the scheme of programmes.

The street has an important role to play in all this, let's the note; a role that can never be over emphasized, and which will eventually spice up the expected boom in our economy.

Now this goes to those of you who think the burden of the brutalized is to comfort the bystander, we say NO to your tendencies. If you have no interest in the distribution of meaningful opportunities for the Youth, then do not make suggestions for those who do. Sit down.

While there's alarming slack in zest among young people, there's hunger on the streets. And you do understand what hunger can birth, don't you.

We are done watching where young voices are no longer recognized in public. Our few years of valuable experience, our opinions are neglected and we ourselves abandoned by policy makers - needed for war only - our talents often cartigorized as Local, ghettolized and demeaned, and then the category called Mature trying us on like customes before discarding our bodies like rotten onions. There's an end to all this. And the revolution has already begun.

What we see in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Jo’burg has been growing within restless souls here in Akwa Ibom State. If you're intent on watching, you won't be disappointed. Give us a little time.

I would rather that the society, and those who pull the rings in the society, take our side in this discourse. Encourage us, because Eyen Owong Akpon - the Child has grown.

MONEY COUTURE: ‘Sack Your Boss’ Conference comes to Uyo

Two days ago my boss had a meeting with all staff telling us of the need to restrategize to grow our business in this unstable time. He said companies are laying off staff and slashing salaries and our firm may not be any different if we don't restrategize.

I asked myself a question what happens if things don't come to play? Is there a plan B for me or most of my colleagues?
I decided I will have to sack my boss before she sacks me, after all, I never really liked her because she doesn’t really do much, but earns a fortune.

PoliticsEmmanuel Ukpong-udo On The Altar Of Mercantile Journalism by akstrending(op): 5:52pm On Jun 20, 2016
Emmanuel Ukpong-udo On the Altar of Mercantile Journalism.

By Nsikak Umoren
The emergence of Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-udo as the political leader of Ikono has attracted intense media attacks. These are no doubts the handiwork of the few disgruntled elements that are not comfortable with the kind of inclusive leadership the young leader is giving to his people.

These elements are still in the woods, believing that leadership is synonymous to old age and that one has to bath in the murky waters of politics before he could be become a Political Leader. To them, leadership is opportunity to suppress interest of the greater number for selfish motives. It is a fact that they expected Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-udo will subscribe to their hideous intentions and leadership of selected few. They rolled out drums and celebrated his emergence with the hope that they had found another willing accomplice in the personality of Obong Ukpong-udo.

Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-udo, a seasoned technocrat and professional has a distinctive idea of leadership, having been exposed to leadership within the private sector and determined to give meaningful leadership to his people. Disappointed, these disgruntled fellows took to blackmails, character assassination, image smearing and slandering. They employed and hired the services of hatchet and mercantile writers, and wheeler dealer local tabloids to carry out their objectives, giving the reputable and highly revered Political leader of Ikono all sort of names in the public space. These are no surprises in anyway; trading on pull-him-down commodity is the preoccupation of failed and expired politicians. Despite these unnecessary attacks on him, Obong Ukpong-udo is focused and determined to serve his people. He philosophy is that “Not everyone deserves to know the real you. Let them criticize who they think you are”, thus he is not perturbed by activities of mercenaries of evil.

The recent of such media hatchet and mercantile report was published on the Global Post newspaper of Friday 17th June, 2016, alleging that the Political Leader is now herbalist and has since been dethroned, with a rider further alleging his involvement in immoral activities. These allegations to any sane person are baseless, lacking in facts, but only figments of imaginations writers who lack creativity and thus turn their barren minds to casting tars on hard earned reputations of people. Since Global Post newspaper has lent itself to this kind or journalism, it is therefore not a surprise that the medium is consulted for this hatchet job. But the writer of this treatise lacks basics knowledge of fair journalism, thus giving rise to one-sided reportage with no face or name to the source of the report. One may therefore asks, if the report was that factual and verifiable, why did the source not be bold enough to let her name on print? If it was that true, why didn’t the writer give his byline? It is demeaning of journalism profession that people could concoct information and let it go on print for public consumption as news. This, going by known standard and ethnical judgment is no journalism.

Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-udo in the eyes of sane persons has built a reputation and will never condescend to things that are not depicting of his personality. Those allegations are concoctions by detractors whose objectives are to distract the focused political leader of Ikono from discharging worthy service to his people. A man who has his people at heart and has gone out of his way to render sacrificial service to the people will in no way consider evil against the people he serves.

Those failed, expired politicians with impunity and oppressive tendencies are further disappointed that Obong Ukpong-udo apart from not toeing their line of evil leadership, does not dole-out his personal income to fund selfish interest of the few acclaimed politicians. Against their expectations, the young leader who is in tune with current realities is focused on building capacities, developing the youths and giving supports to the less-privileged ones in the society. He has so far shown direction and proven that he is ready to serve the interest of the greater number.

The champions of this hate treatise must come to terms that Obong Ukpong-udo is a leader with a difference and his ready to write his name in gold as a leader that leads his people to freedom, abundance and restoration of the glory of the area. He was chosen by the people; he is living for the people and will not subscribe to the desire of few selfish and discontented politicians. As a professional, he knows his onions and is passionately servicing the interest of the majority of the people of Ikono.

They must know that the position of Political Leader of Ikono is not vacant. Obong Ukpong-udo was not imposed on the people of Ikono as postulated by these failed politicians in their reports. He was rather chosen by Ikono people to be their Political Leader and he was officially installed and honoured by the people. It could be recalled that, the political leader of Ikono, Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-udo, after his official reception at Ikono, was honoured by Ibibio Leaders under the aegis of Uyo Senatorial District Leaders Forum and the Ibibio Monarchs ably led by HRM Essien Ekidem who gave him their royal blessings to succeed in his office as the Political Leader of Ikono. It therefore means that Obong Ukpong-udo is the recognized political leader of Ikono and must be given that due regard.

Ikono people are proud of the leadership style of Obong Ukpongudo. They are happy that he has brought exceptional leadership to bear in the area are willing to give him the needed support to continue to do more.

Those who are looking for the position must be reminded that God enthrone leaders and that they should look elsewhere. They must turn away from blackmails, image smearing and character assassination and join hands with the dynamic and visionary political leader to give the needed leadership to Ikono.

Enough of this backstabbing and unnecessary distraction!

AYAYA INT’L STORMS AK WITH MEDICARE, RELIEF MATERIALS FOR UNDER-PRIVILEGED

By Godwin Akpan

When a group of young, intelligent and vibrant youths stormed Akwa Ibom State some four years ago from the United States of America with an Organization known as AYAYA International with Board of Directors, including: Eno Umoh as President, Shalini Malaki, Director of Operations, Andima Umoren, Director of Philanthropy and Tracy Ekong, Director of Finance, with primary objective of providing for the less privileged, the sick, the orphans and the physically challenged, not many took them serious.

Many thought this is just a group of young guys seeking attention from the public, while to some others; it is a calculated attempt by some yankee boys and girls to attract sympathy from the state government or probably for some political considerations. A few others feel this is just a razzmatazz. But for AYAYA Int’l led by its highly-spirited and pragmatic president, Eno Umoh, the philanthropic gesture shown over the years is their little way of showing love to the less privileged in the society. According to Umoh, “AYAYA International has come to stay!”

Born, bred and schooled in the US, Eno Umoh and his associates (all based in the United States) have no business, whatsoever, coming down to Akwa Ibom to spend their hard-earned resources if not for the unwavering commitment, love and compassion they have for the needy, especially those in Akwa Ibom State, for as they would say: ‘Charity begins at home’.
Just like the wise men in the scriptures who travelled several kilometres to give to the little Jesus when he was born, these great Nigerian/American citizens, annually fly several kilometres from America to Nigeria, defy the present day hardship to render selfless services to humanity; services that have no short, medium or long term economic benefits. They believe they are so loved by God and should as a matter of principle love God in return, and such love can only come through giving. They thus demonstrate that one cannot love without giving.

Leadership especially within the social sphere is considered by many as an opportunity by the man or woman at the saddle to be in total control of proceedings within the system, and at all times call the shot. But leadership for Umoh and his lieutenants in AYAYA is all about selfless service and ultimately, more service to humanity. They consider their commitment to service through the platform; AYAYA International, as an opportunity and privilege to render services to the society beyond whatever they received from the system. This simple philosophy and understanding are the nuggets and the unifying factors that shape the approach, behaviour and importantly define the cordial relationship existing between the leadership of AYAYA and the rest of the team for years now.

Born in Ikot Udo Esang in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, the president of AYAYA, Umoh, along with his committed and passion-driven associates, has given hope to several communities in the state, through the provision of life changing items worth hundreds of dollars. Some of the beneficiaries of the magnanimity shown by this group are:

Holy Family Sisters of the Needy, located in Ini LGA
St. Louis’ Handicap Centre, Ikot Ekpene
Motherless Babies Home, Onna
Special Victim Centre, Uyo
L.C.N, Ikot Otong Children’s home
Friends of the Needy Home, Okobo

Asked where the inspiration and commitment to assuage the plight of the needy arose from, Umoh, who is the Chief Operating Officer of Global Air Media in Baltimore, USA, has this to say: “Every day we get to read in the newspapers and watch on Television the high level of poverty in our country, especially among the less privileged, displaced persons, physically challenged and several others, and this is quite disturbing and unfortunate.

“While these sets of persons are living in squalor and abject poverty, some others live in unimaginable affluence. The disparity between the poor and the rich in our country is quite alarming.

“The government has been doing quite a lot in helping the needy. International organizations have been quite supportive. Individuals as we hear have also come in to salvage the situation. But I think a lot is still needed to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, or better still reduce the poverty level in our country,” Umoh noted.

For Tracy Ekong, Director of Finance AYAYA International, “When we get to read stories like this, we always draw the attention of our parents to probe into why such negative stories would be associated with Nigeria. But their responses at all times have always been that we also have the responsibility of impacting on the lives of the less privileged in our society. They always let us understand that government alone cannot do everything.

“So we decided to help the less privileged, especially the Orphans, Physically challenged and the internally displaced children in Akwa Ibom. And we are doing this through our NGO, AYAYA International. We initiated and started AYAYA some four years ago. It runs an annual social programme in Nigeria that comes up in the month of May.

“We raise monies by ourselves, buy several academic and other relevant materials and distribute to the various organizations that directly see to the welfare of our target. This we are bent on sustaining for as long as possible”, Ekong submitted.

For Andima Umoren – the director of philanthropy of AYAYA International, providing educational materials for the vulnerable children to enhance their academic knowledge is the most important and impactful exercise AYAYA has embarked upon over the years. “If you asked me, I would say that the greatest achievement we have recorded as a group is impacting on the academic lives of these vulnerable children. Every other item provided them is secondary. With proper and solid educational upbringing, you are most s certain that the future can only be but bright for these kids”.

In her submission, Shalini Malaki, who directs the general operation of AYAYA, said: “Four year on the line, we as a group are very satisfied with the improvement seen in the general well-being of the different homes AYAYA has visited. The children academic and social well-being has improved tremendously. Some of the kids now speak like some of us with American accent, and this gives us complete joy. It shows that our efforts and resources have been properly utilised. Our parents are key to the success of this exercise. They support and encourage us to help people irrespective of social, political and ethnic divide. What we do bring us closer to our people; the people of Akwa Ibom. This gesture will continue for as long as possible.”

Gestures such as these are what we often advocate through the platform FOR THE LOVE OF NIGERIA, and indeed, the continuous impact of AYAYA Int’l on the lives of the under-privileged and physically challenged in the state, especially in a period like this where there is global hardship and paucity of funds should be commended, encouraged and replicated in our society. And with partnership coming from credible organization such as: USAID, University of Uyo and Akwa Mfon Association, USA, continuous services to humanity by AYAYA International would only get better. This organisation needs our support and encouragement, for by so doing, our society will be a better place. Indeed, the AYAYA philanthropic disposition is truly FOR THE LOVE OF THE PEOPLE.

Certification And Training AdvertsAKEES Sponsors 200 For World-class ICT Training At APTECH @akees_project by akstrending(op): 5:49pm On May 16, 2016
About 200 Akwa Ibom people, who registered with AKEES for Information Technology skill acquisition, have been sponsored to an International ICT institute, APTECH for a short course programme on ICT, set to kick off soon.
In a seminar on Saturday May 14 at Ibom Hall in Uyo, hosted by the ICT institute, tagged APTECH CAREER QUEST, to introduce prospective students to APTECH, enlighten them on their educational programmes, benefits of acquiring World-Class schooling on ICT and the scholarship aide policies; the Akwa Ibom Enterprise and Employment Scheme, AKEES announced that all the seminar participants will automatically receive 100% scholarship to attend the APTECH short course.

Announcing this, the Coordinator of AKEES, Mr. Ufot Ebong praised the participants who turned up for the Seminar, even as he maintained that there are others who were informed of the event, but failed to attend it, thereby disqualifying them from another opportunity to get world class education for free.
“There are hundreds of thousands of people who were aware of this programme, but these are the ones who are serious. These people who came for this seminar have done very well. They could have been like others who prefer to hang around people’s homes looking for handouts”. He said.

APTECH, an ICT training institute that commenced operation 30 years ago in India, in affiliation with Middlesex University - with campuses in London, Uk; Malta, Dubai and Mauritius - award internationally recognized Certificates. According to Mr. Seetan, representative of APTECH international, students of APTECH enjoy the best of ICT education, comparable to what is obtained in any other ICT educational institute anywhere else in the world. It is expected, according to the resource persons, that APTECH trained professionals can work in any organisation’s IT department or even create a job to employ others.

Mr. Inibehe Otoho, Business head of APTECH Education, Uyo, announced that APTECH is offering a complete ICT career programme, to last for 2 years; and also a short course to last for 3 months. The complete programme would be for those interested in the APTECH Advanced diploma in Software Engineering (ADSE), and who may proceed, on graduation, to any of the campuses of Middlesex University for a one year programme that would earn them a BSc Degree; while the 3 month course would be for non-students, who would also be certified by APTECH.
Mr. Ebong, who also is the Senior Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Governor on Technical Matters and Due Process, assured on the State Government’s determination to maintain transparency and due process in the execution of all AKEES programmes for the people of Akwa Ibom.

“The Governor of Akwa Ibom State is a man who came from the organized private sector. He is not a man who will approve something that will be politicized. He is not a politician in the routine sense of the word. I am also not interested in politicizing this programme. We will not be involved in something that would leave people deceived. There is a list of people who showed seriousness by registering and attending this seminar. They will also be the only ones to benefit from the scholarship”. He added.

Science/TechnologyHow APC Used BOTS On Social Media To Deceive Nigerians By Cavil Inwang by akstrending(op): 4:16pm On May 13, 2016
Social Media Trends Series (1) : How APC Used BOTS on Social Media to deceive Nigerians
By Cavil Inwang

The 2015 election campaigns that secured victory for many APC candidates was arguably the most competitive, most vibrant and cost intensive; it also was the first to engage the use of the Social Media the most in the history of Electioneering in Nigeria.
Using Twitter, the APC’s mastery of propaganda coupled with a dedication to Social media use, gave the party the edge over an over-confident PDP. Although both parties made some effort, the APC’s was on an advanced scale.
Using social network visualization tools such as Flocker and Gephi, I have discovered a reliable way of detecting ‘BOT (ROBOT) accounts to examine the number of connections targeted Twitter accounts have with other users.
Bots have few connections, while real users tend to have far more. Using the software, I have been able to identify many cases of bots used to sabotage events and protests.

I have been watching the rise of Twitter BOTS in Nigeria and other countries since the 2015 elections, and have noticed fake accounts promoting the candidate who is now president of Nigeria.
A typical example was during the #AkwaIbomIsPDP campaign, which was a zoning agitation campaign aimed at analyzing the zoning formula of the Akwa Ibom Political system. This campaign recorded massive audience participation and trended on Twitter nation-wide. But also it attracted the attack of APC spammers who disrupted the campaign and they brought down contents; pictures and tweets that had the hashtag after 24 hours of its creation, using Twitter Bots. Pictures and tweets posted by thousands of users were deleted.

My experience as a social expert, have observed similar behaviors in Nigeria. In many cases, the BOTS are run by traditional spammer’s targeting popular hashtags such as #AkwaIbomIsPDP for commercial and also political purposes.
After 24 Hours this hashtag was attacked by Twitter BOTS which deleted every content with pictures shared by over thousands of twitter users, not even a retweet was found tagged by this hashtag.

Spam bot’s impact on trending topics is hard to quantify. Activists using their hashtags for a noble cause may observe activites going on under their hashtags not knowing they are early attepts at malicious interference. Before long, usually, the interference succeeds in bringing down the campaign.

Recently we had an experience of this. On the 12th Of May 2016, the Nigerian Social Media Community started several campaigns using different hashtags that saw themselves to the top: #OccupyNigeria , #FuelSubsidy and #145Naira were amazingly robust. these hashtags where trended by angry Nigerian Social Media Users who shared their views on why the president removed fuel subsidy.
3 Hours after they began, #SURE-p was seen Trending, soon Topping the chart and sending all earlier trending topics below. In my research I have experienced that just because a hashtag is trending doesn’t mean it is popular.

This #SURE-p carried content from the past Government’s asking Nigerians to contribute to the counter-campaign by sending content meant to disparage the former administration of Goodluck Jonathan, whom they accused of removing subsidy and failing to reinvest the savings.
#SURE-P scaled through because a combination of spammers and activists put a lot of effort into trending the topic.
Also politically motivated spam bots can pose real problems for activists, particularly when they flood existing hashtags with useless content. This is another tactic of theirs. These efforts can have material effects on organizers of these noble cause campaigns.
These bots made it more difficult for the information to reach the public. For example #AkwaIbomIsPDP activists used this hashtag to share photos but the hashtag was pushed off the Twitter trending list by another hashtag. A cursory research establishes that the replacing hashtag was created and promoted by bots, based on analyses of the connections between the bot accounts and other Twitter accounts.

The Akwa Ibom state governorship tribunal got a lot of attention from Nigeria’s social media community. Beginning July 14, 2015, details of the tribunal’s proceedings found their way via content to the different social mediums, mostly twitter, using #AkwaIbom.
Twitter has a spam-bot problem, as basically any user of Twitter can tell you. These fake accounts are often just worthless throwaway handles designed to help desperate users trump up their follower counts, or brands with dubious ethics promote their products. So normally when you think bot, you think “annoyance.”

Bots often degrade the user experience and they weaken Twitter’s legitimacy.
So the question remains: who is running these anti-activist bots? Gallagher says that because of their appearance during the last Presidential election campaigns in Nigeria, the bots can commonly be referred to as “President-bots” and the ongoing assumption among activists on Twitter is that the federal government and opposition are behind the current crop of bots.
I see social media as a tool for people to connect, learn and build relationships rather than a platform to create behavioural patterns that makes it possible tool in creating awareness for a political brand.
And contrary to the feeling that social media causes civic disengagements, statistics have shown that 66 per cent of social media users actively engage in political activism online.

An IT analyst, Mr. Matthew Oladipo, also said that the type of messages parties and politicians post on social media could either make or break unity among the electorate.
He said, “We have about 80 million Nigerian youths, many of whom are users of social media. As the platform can liberate, it can also break our unity. Politicians have to find a way to make social media foster unity in the country.
“They should learn not to post offensive or inciting statements because that is not what we need”.

Events#YESS: AKTC Boss, Among Top Businessmen To Share Success Stories With Students by akstrending(op): 6:15pm On Apr 28, 2016
Young Entrepreneurs Success Story (YESS) is about sharing your success stories to a live audience, not a television interview neither a newspaper. It is about hearing from people who have made it before us, people who had been where we are today and who are currently where we ought to be. Hearing them tell their success stories can inspire us to press on.

It is not a strategy project. It is success stories supported by the Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Social Re-orientation, Mr. Ekpeno Gold. The Bible says ‘out of the abundance of the heart speaketh the mouth’. It is not what enters into a man that defines him but what comes out of him. The things that we hear directly affect us.

The initiator of Character and Success Project, Mr. Gideon Ekanem, said that YESS project is in line with the dakkada initiative of Governor Udom Emmanuel which charges the youths in the state to rise to the faith of greatness, explaining that YESS aims at changing Africa through success stories by reprogramming the mentality of the youths who are staging more living global businesses.

YESS targets students, those who are yet to leave schools, the new breeds and young graduates, but it is open for entrepreneurs in the market. The idea of bringing the students in, which does not reflect in the project, is not far from the fact that government cannot employ everybody. It is to prepare them not to graduate to join the number of the unemployed in the society.

It is to bare in their minds that as they graduate, they will have it at the back of their minds that they are launching into the corporate Nigeria, entrepreneurship and initiating themselves.

Those who will be sharing their success stories at the event, which is slated for Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, are Mr. Ubong King of Marine Security; Mr. Nsikak John, CEO, Nsik Motors, operators of Akwa Ibom Transport Corporation (AKTC); Mr. John Nta, CEO of Treasure Island.

At the special session, the Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA), Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke; Honourable Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Akan Okon, and the Vice Chancellor of the Akwa Ibom State University, Professor Eno J. Ibanga, will address the youths at the event.
