Politics › Breaking: Soldiers Go On The Rampage In Borno, Turn Against Officers by alcmene(op): 1:59pm On Dec 16, 2016
Nigerian soldiers of the 21 Brigade of the Nigerian Army deployed to rout Boko Haram from the dreaded Sambisa Forest in Borno State early Friday went on the rampage by turning against their officers and firing gunshots in all directions.
People familiar with the matter said the troops complained of mistreatment and then began to shoot indiscriminately, threatening to kill any officer who stands on their way.
“The brigade is based in Bama but is currently deployed at Bula Bello in Sambisa for Operation Rescue Final,” a military insider told PREMIUM TIMES.
“But suddenly soldiers started mutinying at 6AM today, firing in all directions and threatening to pull out of the operation.
“As some of them fire gunshots, some started preparing vehicles to move out of location. They also warned officers to steer clear or they would be shot dead.
“They are saying their commanders have been treating them badly and telling them lies. As I speak to you, the firing is still going on, and there is confusion everywhere.”
The commander of the Brigade, Col AG Laka, could not immediately be reached to comment for this story.
The Nigerian Army is yet to issue a statement on the incident.

Contacted, the spokesperson for the Army, Sani Usman, a brigadier general, declined comment on the development.
There have been repeated cases of mutiny by Nigerian soldiers since the war against Boko Haram began, and the Army has tried over 100 soldiers for the offence.

The worst case occurred in May 2014 when troops of 7 Division, angered by the death of 12 of their colleagues in a Boko Haram ambush, opened fire on the vehicle of their General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Ahmadu Mohammed.

Politics › Buhari’s Experience Needed In Gambian Crisis’ by alcmene(op): 2:16pm On Dec 14, 2016
The coalition of seven political parties that produced The Gambia President-elect, Adama Barrow, is looking up to President Muhammadu Buhari to deploy his vast experience, alongside other African leaders, to resolve the political logjam in the West African country.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, one of the coalition members, Hamad Bah, spoke with the media during the high-level ECOWAS /AU/UN Joint Mission to The Gambia on Tuesday.

He said: “We need the experience of President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria in many ways. Like President Jammeh, he is a former military officer, so he knows how the military thinks, and would be able to talk to him appropriately.

“Again, President Buhari was in the opposition in Nigeria for about 12 years, before he won election in 2015. So, he also knows how the opposition thinks. He can feel what we feel. We are quite glad that President Buhari is here, it gives us a lot of hope.”

The high-level team, in series of meetings that lasted the whole of Tuesday, met with President Jammeh, twice, conferred with Barrow, consulted with security chiefs, members of the diplomatic community, leadership of the electoral commission, and many other interest groups.

The consensus was that President Jammeh needed to respect the result of the December 1 election, which he had earlier accepted, congratulated the winner, only to recant a week later, calling for fresh polls “to be conducted by a God-fearing electoral commission.”

Police say two explosions have ripped through a market in northeast Nigeria’s Madagali town, and a survivor says they killed at least 10 people.

Boko Haram Islamic extremists are blamed for the attack Friday morning on the edge of the group’s Sambisa Forest stronghold, which Nigeria’s military has been bombing ahead of ground assaults.

Since the military has dislodged the extremists from towns and villages this year, the insurgents have been attacking soft targets.

Survivor Ahmadu Gulak says the two explosions struck simultaneously at opposite ends of the market selling grains and vegetables. He says he counted at least 10 bodies and many wounded people being ferried to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

Police spokesman Othman Abubakar confirms the blasts but says he has no toll of victims yet.

“Don’t forget that nobody even knew the team will emerge victorious". “If we were confident they will emerge victorious, all the federation would have done is to plan for process of participation and entitlement.''

From this statement we can infer that:

1)That the Minister did not expect our girls winning- classic case of the administration. FAILURE.!!

2) That if the girls had lost, they would not be paid a dime.

I thought the girls played against Cameroon as the only opponent; I didn't know they were also playing against Nigerian officials spiritually cool
Sports › Unsettled Allowances: We Never Knew Falcons Will Win AWCON- FG by alcmene(op): 2:15pm On Dec 09, 2016
The Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, on Thursday said the Federal Government did not expect the Super Falcons to win the just-concluded CAF African Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

He said that was why the government was currently facing difficulties in paying the players’ entitlements.

Dalung spoke with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja amidst continued protests by members of the victorious Falcons over their unpaid allowances.

The players had seized the trophy they won at the competition and said they would hold on to the trophy until the authorities concerned offset the N238.05m accumulated bonuses which they are being owed.

They had threatened that if President Muhammadu Buhari refused to address their grievances at the Federal Executive Council’s meeting on Wednesday, they would embark on protest on the streets of Abuja.

But the minister said the situation could have been avoided if the Nigerian Football Federation had envisaged that the team would win and put in place the process of paying their entitlements.

He said, “Don’t forget that nobody even knew the team will emerge victorious.

“If we were confident they will emerge victorious, all the federation would have done is to plan for process of participation and entitlement.

“It is already established in sports tradition, when you win this is what you are entitled to.

“The situation is highly unfortunate and I don’t like it. These girls have given confidence to women who want to embrace sports, so this will go a long way in killing this laudable achievement. It is unfortunate but we will make sure the right thing is done.”

The minister said his position had always remained that the process of request for funds for sporting projects must come earlier to meet the objectives.

He said if the federation had requested for funds on time, the process of settling the players would have been easier.

The minister admitted that the matter was not handled properly, regretting that there are also issues of outstanding payment of coaches.

Politics › Akinwunmi Adesina: We Were Mocked For 'Cassava Bread’, Now Everyone Eats It by alcmene(op): 3:34pm On Dec 06, 2016
Akinwunmi Adesina, former minister of agriculture, says the Goodluck Jonathan administration was mocked for introducing cassava flour and bread, which he claims all Nigerians now eat.

Speaking at the African Economic Conference in Abuja on Monday, Adesina said Africa must work on feeding itself and the world via import substitution.

“When I was minister in Nigeria, we moved aggressively on import substitution with use of cassava flour for use as composite flours in bread making and confectionery industries,” he said.

“People laughed us to scorn: Nigerians, they said, would never eat bread made from cassava flour. Well, unknown to Nigerians, flour millers, small, medium and large, have now all shifted to partial substitution of wheat flour with cassava composite flours.

“Don’t look for ‘cassava bread’, all your bread is now cassava composite flour-based. The industry has shifted. The story is not just in Nigeria. As we speak, several countries have taken the homegrown policy in Nigeria to help reduce their wheat imports, including Liberia, Togo and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).”

He said a “young graduate, Noel, from Bukavu in Democratic Republic of Congo, together with his colleagues, have moved into agribusiness. In just a little over one year, they manufacture cassava flour, well-packaged and standardised for bakers”.

“Today, Noel and his team 4 generate income of $4,000 per week, or $16,000 a month, or $196,000 per year. That means they are making over N78 million annually if converted into naira at the official interbank market rate. They are already multi-millionaires.

“He that has ears let him hear: The key to Africa’s prosperity is value addition in agriculture, in turning our products to money, in looking inwards. Africa must feed itself.”

Adesina said to take new agricultural technologies to scale, AfDB will soon be launching a new $800 million initiative – Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) – with the goal of reaching 40 million farmers over ten years.

He said the bank would invest $24 billion in agriculture and agribusiness over the next ten years.

America is a democracy where the rule of laws are observed by every individual no matter your statue!

Wole Sonyinka should surrender his green card to US Homeland Security before been forced by law to do so!

I am ready to go to court in America to enforce the law against Wole Soyinka.

The President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has warned that anybody who burns American flag or destroys permit card may lose citizenship or go to jail.

He posted this on his Twitter handle on Tuesday.

“Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag - if they do, there must be consequences - perhaps loss of citizenship or years in jail!,” he said.
