Moments before his surgery, an elderly man in Savona refused to be operated on when he discovered the anaesthetist on shift was a woman. The 70-year-old was to undergo surgery at the San Paolo hospital in Liguria last week to repair an inguinal hernia. Medical staff had performed the required pre-surgery x-rays, blood tests and electrocardiograms, but as he was being prepped in the operating room the patient suddenly refused to let surgery to his groin area proceed unless the anaesthesia was administered by a man. “Buongiorno. I am the anaesthetist you don’t want. Would you like to tell me what the problem is?” the doctor told him. The patient said not to take it personally but he had heard "talk" about the hospital's female medical staff and did not want to be treated by one. His wife also joined the argument, insisting “no woman would lay a hand on him.” Frustrated, angry and with five other surgeries lined up for the afternoon, the anaesthetist and lead surgeon called their superiors before returning with a solution. “This is not a private clinic and you can’t choose your doctor from a catalogue,” she told the patient. “We have this team on shift today, so if you are fine with that then let’s go into the operating room and do what we need to do, otherwise, the head of surgery suggests you sign to be dismissed and be treated in a private structure where you can demand whatever you like. Good day. ” The man signed the paperwork and left the hospital. Head of Anaesthesiology Brunello Brunetto defended his medical team, saying “regardless of their gender, all the anaesthetists have my trust and are all fully capable of fulfilling their role.” Savona Mayor Ilaria Caprioglio expressed full solidarity with the anaesthetist and all the hospital's female staff, calling the episode "absurd, incomprehensible and unacceptable." Reached by phone, Regional Health Councilor Sonia Viale said her office has decided to bill the patient for the pre-surgery procedures he underwent before then refusing treatment. In Italy, the cost of health care and hospital procedures is almost entirely covered by the state. “It is a politically sensitive topic in a hospital structure because patients could raise various reasons – even religious – to refuse treatment by a woman, so I must be very strict about any case to come forward in a health system that I can proudly say is one of the most advanced in the world when it comes to offering quality care for free to everyone.” This time, however, the bill is on its way. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/07/20/man-refuses-operated-discoveringanaesthetist-woman/

Usain Bolt overcame a rare bout of nerves and a slow start to produce a winning farewell in front of his home fans in Jamaica. The sprint great, winner of eight Olympic gold medals, will retire from competitive athletics after the World Championships in London in August. The 30-year-old's final race in Kingston, at a meeting featuring most of the world's leading athletes, attracted a crowd of more than 30,000, including the island's Prime Minister Andrew Holness and IAAF president Sebastian Coe. Bolt was slowly out of the blocks but quickly took command of the race and crossed the line in 10.03 seconds before making an emotional victory lap in front of his adoring fans. "I don't think I've ever been that nervous running a 100m. I think that was possibly one of my worst races. My execution was poor, my start was poor as always. I think in the last bit I lost it a little," Bolt said. "But I didn't expect anything spectacular. [It was] my first race since January when I ran a 150m and some relays in Australia so I just wanted to stay injury free, put on a show for the crowd and shown them I'm thankful for the support over the years. "Just the atmosphere and the people, the support they came out and give me tonight, it was really nerve-racking. I never expected this, I knew it was going to be big, the stadium was ram packed so thank you guys for coming out and supporting me." Mo Farah was also in action at the Racers Grand Prix event, winning the 3,000m in a time of seven minutes, 41.20 seconds ahead of Australian Patrick Tiernan and Jamaica's Kemoy Campbell. South African star Wayde van Niekerk continued his fine form with a world's best run of 19.84 seconds - also a national record - in winning the 200m. But there was a shock defeat for 800m great David Rudisha, who ran his fastest time of the season so far but was caught and passed by Kenyan team-mate Willy Tarbei, who won the race in one minute, 44.86 seconds. http://www.skysports.com/more-sports/athletics/news/29175/10911887/usain-bolt-wins-emotional-final-race-in-jamaica

Customs officials in Shanghai have arrested a woman attempting to smuggle two suitcases into China that were almost entirely made of cocaine. Airport authorities X-rayed the luggage of a woman flying from an unnamed South American country. The scan showed her luggage was darker in colour than normal, and also that it was unusually heavy even when it was empty. Testing revealed the luggage was made of more than 10kg (22lb) of cocaine. The incident took place in February but has only now been reported by the police. Drug traffickers have long been dreaming up ways to transport cocaine - making an entire leg cast out of the drug, or dissolving it into wine, as one Chinese couple was caught doing just last month. Hiding in plain sight The usual ways would be to somehow hide the drugs within the luggage or on your body. But constructing suitcases out of hardened cocaine and parading it in plain sight in front of security stands out as a first. When the woman was asked to empty her luggage, there was nothing suspicious at first glance - merely an empty suitcase. What tipped the officers off was that it was significantly heavier than any empty luggage ought to be. Compress and extract There have been similar cases in Europe where smugglers used glue and moulds to compress cocaine into a hard substance. Cocaine is a relatively rare drug in China, and the woman is expected to pay a heavy price for her attempt to bring it into the country. Chinese law dictates that anyone convicted of trafficking more than 50g of cocaine will be executed. It's the first time that this particular method of drug smuggling has been uncovered - yet it's unclear how many such suitcases might have passed under the eyes of unsuspecting airport security in the past. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-40186508

Tapjets, the Hail-A-Jet service company has revealed how modern mobile technology helped to detect and trace the fraud that led to the arrest of Nigerian singer, Dammy Krane and his accomplice, Chukwuebuka. The duo were arrested on June 2, 2017, in Miami, Florida. Tapjets said the fraud was detected with a small token of authenticity. “He (Dammy Krane) uses Samsung Galaxy 7, and messages did not come from that phone. However, that same phone was used to place the online order with credit card that does not belong to him,” Head of Flight Safety and Security for Tapjets, Konstantin, told Instablog9ja exclusively. “Same phone was used to register multiple accounts trying to buy with different cards until one finally worked. However, names did not match to zip codes etc.” The company revealed that Dammy’s accomplice, Chukwuebuka also tried to purchase flight on another phone with yet another card. “Total of five cards in an hour till one worked. We are 100 percent confident that our app was on that phone and order was placed via T-Mobile network from cell tower located in Miami area,” Konstantin continued. “We have coordinates of cell tower and proof that they took a car from that area to Opalacka airport. That’s where the arrest took place.” The company said it is not proud about the incident, but it wants others to think twice before stealing from companies. “Technology is very sophisticated and being an airline, we have access to the latest. I hope you can help in spreading the message that we are not on a witch hunt,” Konstantin concluded. While Chukwuebuka has been released on bail, it was gathered that Dammy who is facing 9 counts of fraud and grand theft is not eligible to bail yet. However, a defense attorney, Deborah Prager, has now been appointed to represent him. http://punchng.com/how-new-technology-led-to-dammy-kranes-arrest/

Kodi add-on service Navi-X shuts down over legal fears as streaming crackdown continues What is a 'Kodi box'?A MAJOR Kodi add-on will stop working because it’s afraid a brush with the law is on the cards. Navi-X allowed viewers to import movies, TV shows and live sports from illegal sources onto their Kodi video player. Without Navi-X it’s a little trickier for people to stream films using Kodi. It was widely regarded as one of the “best” media libraries and has been around for ten years. But the team behind it recently warned that it had become too risky to continue offering the service. In a farewell message posted online, the developers wrote: “Every good thing must come to an end. “After ten years of successful operation, Navi-X has sadly been discontinued. Navi-X was first released in April 2007, and is the oldest Kodi add-on of its kind. “There are a few reasons why we made the decision to close Navi-X, and hope that the hundreds of thousands of people who still used Navi-X daily will understand why it was best to discontinue Navi-X while it was still on top. “The main reason why the decision was made to discontinue the Navi-X service is the current legal climate surrounding Kodi.” The abundance of pre-loaded or “fully loaded” Kodi box sellers has put Kodi in the spotlight in the UK. As UK officials try to tackle copyright infringement, people who buy the illegal IPTV boxes ‘may be under investigation‘, the Sun recently revealed. The chief executive of FACT, the federation against copyright theft, issued the warning, saying “some poor, unfortunate person may be the first that is made an example of”. Sellers could face up to ten years in jail for peddling the technology. eBay and Amazon admitted they were wiping “fully loaded” Kodi boxes from their website. But the makers of Kodi say they will never stop Brits from accessing films using telly boxes. https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/3603040/kodi-add-on-navi-x-kicks-the-bucket-over-legal-fears/
