Politics › Nigeria Announces $5.8 Billion Deal For Record-breaking Power Project by Aldebaran(op):
(CNN)
The government of Nigeria has announced the award of a $5.8 billion contract to build what will be the largest power plant in the country.

The 3,050-megawatt Mambila hydroelectric power project in the state of Taraba will be delivered by a consortium of Chinese state-owned construction firms.

The megaproject will feature four dams between 50 and 150 meters tall, and take six years to complete, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, told reporters in Abuja.

The Chinese Export-Import Bank will finance 85% of the development, with the Nigerian government contributing 15%.

Minister Fashola claimed the project will deliver far-reaching benefits.

"(Mambila) will have a transformational effect on all of Nigeria's socio-economic development," he said through a government spokesman, "It will have considerable positive impact on electricity supply nationwide, productivity, employment, tourism, technology transfer, rural development, irrigation, agriculture and food production."

Celebrities › My Drug Costs N1.7m A Pack – Ailing Sadiq Daba by Aldebaran(op): 10:37am On Sep 14, 2017
Chux Ohai

It is no longer news that seasoned broadcaster and actor, Sadiq Daba, is down with leukaemia. Unknown to many of his fans and admirers, the actor, whose role in Kunle Afolayan’s award-winning film, ‘October 1’, attracted a lot of attention awhile ago, practically lives on a drug called Gleevec, used for the treatment of the disease.

Although he gets supplies of the drug free-of-charge from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, courtesy of a donor agency based in the United States, it is very expensive off the counter and can only be obtained from the institution.

“To get the drug at OAU, you have to go through a process of evaluation. Then you are recommended to the foundation that supplies the drug. But, if you are going to buy it off the counter, a pack of it will cost you about N1.7m. And this will last for three months,” he said, in an interview with our correspondent in his Lagos residence.

Daba’s battle with leukaemia started toward the end of 2015. The disease virtually caught him unawares. At first, he had thought that he was having the first symptoms of a minor ailment.

“I thought I had malaria fever. So I went to a hospital in Abuja for a test. After a series of tests, the doctor was shocked. He told me that what I had was beyond them at the hospital. He advised me to seek help from a tertiary institution. Tertiary institution, in this case, simply refers to a university teaching hospital. That was in 2015.

“Then I went to the Dermatology Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and it was confirmed that I had leukaemia. Fortunately, the disease was not overblown yet. It was still at the early and manageable stage. I was placed on drugs,” he recounted.

But, midway into the treatment of the ailment in 2016, Daba had a relapse and he was hospitalised for about three months. “I was rushed from my residence to the Lagos State Emergency Unit. Again, I was fortunate to encounter a group of dedicated and courteous medical staff there who took great care of me. I was placed under observation for 48 hours and, thereafter, they wheeled me to the General Hospital where I was admitted,” he said.

He recalled that during his stay at the hospital, which lasted two months, the chief medical director of LASUTH came on a ward visit and recognised him as he lay on his sickbed.

“It was nice that he visited the ward at that point because my bill was almost over N1m. The good doctor went on to slash the entire bill by 50 per cent. I will never forget that,” he said.

After leaving the hospital, Daba started attending a dermatology clinic where he met one Dr. Balogun, a consultant on dermatology, whom he described as a “fantastic person”. Although the doctor placed him on a regular diet of drugs, it failed to solve his problem. Eventually she advised him to go to the “only medical centre in Nigeria where leukaemia patients are treated and the right drugs are available” for the treatment of the ailment. That centre is at the OAU, Ile-Ife.

“She gave me a referral letter. But I was scared because there was a proviso that I might undergo a bone-marrow surgery. For the first two months, I could not go to the university simply because I was trying to avoid the surgery,” he said.

While he struggled to overcome his fright, the broadcaster had another relapse. This time, he was warned that he needed to go for proper medical treatment at OAU. Somehow, when he got there the doctors had to skip the bone-marrow operation and he was placed on drugs.

Daba was full of praises for the team at the Department of Dermatology, headed by Prof. Mohiz Durosinmi, that handled his case. “Prof. Durosinmi’s team was absolutely fantastic. Otherwise, I would have been dead,” he said.

The doctors also warned him not to skip the drugs, donated to OAU by the Max Foundation, even for one day. For this reason, he has visited the university from his residence four times. However, wondering what would have been the situation in the absence of such collaboration between the foundation and the institution’s dermatology department, he said, “If the Max Foundation had not been doing this and as a patient, you were to spend money for treatment, you would be dead.”

Education › 10 Things Your Body Language Says About You by Aldebaran(op): 7:41pm On Sep 13, 2017
The only language that’s seemingly universal, is body language. How we carry ourselves and behave around others physically can send out strong messages, both positive and negative.

A video by The HUB has detailed 10 things we can tell from our own, and others’, body language.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=EhFPMTWSsso

1. Eye contact

The video says:

"How your eyes meet with other eyes normally is an indication of confidence, interest and honesty".

Good eye contact is crucial for interviews, it states. But when it comes to staring, things get a bit trickier.

"Good, strong eye contact is one thing, a hard stare is another. This is not universal".

In areas such as Eastern Europe it’s fairly normal for people to stare at you, “they’re not being creepy or aggressive as people would assume in the UK and US”.

2. Male legs

"For men, the classic manspreading shows the dominant person, someone who likes to be in charge: “the kind of people who give themselves ‘you da man’ pep talks in the mirror every morning”.

"In most European and Asian countries, men often sit with the left leg crossed over the right with both pointing downwards. In the US this will probably indicate a closed nature but if one leg is horizontal with the ankle resting over the knee, then this is a confident and often argumentative pose".

3. Female legs

Most female leg poses involve the legs being together, the video says; spreading legs is rare because females’ pose has been influenced by clothing.

Then there’s the “ankle lock,” where one foot wraps around the other and is a sign of repression or fear.

4. Playing with hair

"Running your hands through your hair, especially taking hair away from your face, is often a sign of flirting and openness, the video says.

Playing with hair is not always a good sign, though. Holding hair indicates awkwardness and nervousness".

5. Drumming fingers

Drumming your fingers on the desk is a “loud and obvious message” broadcasting your impatience or frustration. It’s also something you often don’t realise you’re doing. It can be a sign of nerves, the video explains, when “your body doesn’t know what to do with itself”.

But it can also be used more deliberately, often  by “More dominant people” to show they’re not happy with something.

6. Arms and hands

"The most common body language signal of all is crossing your arms. You don’t need to be a psychologist to know what it means".

It’s probably one of the first major signals that children learn to read, the video says, and when parents cross their arms it often means the child is in trouble.

Or, it simply means you're cold.

However, crossing your hands behind your back often means the opposite: "shyness turns to fearlessness, anger becomes calm".

Rubbing your palms together shows you’re expecting a good outcome, while holding your palms open and facing up makes you more trustworthy, since you’re showing you have nothing hidden in them.

7. Where you point your body

When it comes to body language your chest, the video says, your chest is an arrow: where you point it indicates where your interest lies.

In a meeting, it says, if someone’s chest is pointed away, they’re either not interested or they disagree with what’s being said. Same goes for a cinema date:

"If you’re on a cinema date and they’re leaning on the far armrest there’s probably no Hollywood happy ending".

8. Shaking hands

A weak handshake, the video says, implies a “lack of determination and commitment”.

Using both hands to cup a handshake from below shows “sincerity and a desire for closeness”, whereas cupping it from above shows dominance.

9. Lying

Body language can help you get away with lies more easily.

"If your eyes go up to the right, it implies we’re using our imagination, not your memory, so you’re making something up".

Another sign of lying is a dry mouth, so don’t lick your lips or swallow strangely.

10. Flirting

We mimic each others' body language to show we're on the same wavelength, the video states, but just make sure you don't go overboard or it'll look very odd.

Health › Director In Lagos State Civil Service Allegedly Commits Suicide-The Punch by Aldebaran(op): 3:01pm On Sep 12, 2017
A director in the Lagos State Ministry of Youths, Mr. Oludare Buraimoh, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging in his room.

Buraimoh, who lived at Unity Estate, Phase II, Gbonagun, Abeokuta in Ogun State, took his life at about 4.00p.m. on Monday after attending to his son, Dotun, who was reportedly ill.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that many sympathisers, who spoke in silent tones about the incident, were seen in the compound.

Dotun told NAN that the incident happened around 4.00p.m. after his father gave him a drug to treat his malaria.

“We were both at home; he came to give me a drug and left me thinking he was going to retire to his room. But when I did not hear his voice, I called him, but no response came.

“I, thereafter, went to his room only to find him hanging from the ceiling with a traditional Aso Oke tied to his neck and a stool with which he committed the suicide.

“I then alerted the neighbours, who, in turn, told me to alert the police, which I did,” Dotun said.

The wife of the deceased said she had yet to come to terms with her husband’s act.

“I don’t know what came over him, it is inexplicable. We have been surviving through thick and thin and now that we ought to sit down and enjoy, after all the years of toiling, he decided to take his own life.

“He did not show any sign of depression at the time he committed suicide. He was in high spirits; what led him to this remains a riddle,” she said.

The Obantoko Police Station, where the incident was reported, confirmed the suicide.

DSP Rasheed Olaleye of the station confirmed the incident but declined to give further comments, saying that the DPO would be in the best position to handle the enquiries.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the General Hospital, Abeokuta, after due clearance from the police.

Science/Technology › 12 Monkeys Die From Heart Attacks In India After They Were Scared By A Tiger by Aldebaran(op): 6:12pm On Sep 11, 2017

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKTDsc67U04

A dozen monkeys have been found dead in a forest in India - with veterinary experts claiming they suffered simultaneous heart attacks after they were scared by a tiger.

Locals discovered the monkeys in a forest clearing and were initially baffled by the apparent mass death.

Suspecting the mammals had been poisoned, postmortems were carried out which reportedly revealed they all had heart attacks at the same time.

Vets in the Kotwali Mohammadi area of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh carried out investigations.

Vet Dr Sanjeev Kumar said: 'It was confirmed in the post-mortem report that the monkeys died due to cardiac arrest.

The monkeys could have died due to tiger's roar as tigers often traverse that area.'

Forest department workers found the monkeys on Monday and an upsetting video shows them stuffing the bodies in polythene bags.

Villagers reported tigers are often in the area and were heard roaring at the time of the deaths.

The claim of a mass heart attack has been criticised by wildlife experts, however, who suggest the animals were more likely to have died from an infection.

Dr Brijendra Singh, a veterinarian, told the Times of India: 'Monkeys are a wild animal and they don't die in this manner. All the monkeys might have been suffering from some infection that claimed their lives.'

Education › Five Lions Escape From Sanctuary,Govt Warns Public-The Punch by Aldebaran(op):
Rural Safety Coordinator of Fochville in Western Johannesburg, South Africa, Warrant Officer Jan Esterhuysen, has confirmed that five lions escaped from an unknown sanctuary in Gauteng Province on Saturday.

“We responded to a distress call and were surprised to see a pride of five lions in a farm at Fochville, busy feeding.

“We identified a large male and four smaller lions. Tracking them at night was difficult,” Esterhuysen said.

He said nature conservation and other role players were converging on the area to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman of Nigeria Union in the province, Mr. Trust Owoyele, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Johannesburg that the body had received information about the missing lions, warning Nigerians resident in the area to keep safe.

“We have a sizeable Nigerian population in the area. We advise that for now, they should stay away from farms, parks and bush because the predators could be hiding there.

“We also call on our people to be cautious of their movements in the night, especially in lonely areas because the lions have been sighted feeding on a cow in a farm,” he said.

Owoyele said though authorities were working hard to get the lions, it was important that Nigerians in the area adopt safety measures.

Secretary General of the union, Mr. Emeka Ezinteje, said the national secretariat was aware of the development in the area.

He also urged Nigerians to be conscious of the missing lions and be cautious in their movement.

“The union appeals to relevant authorities to assist in capturing the missing animals as quickly as possible,” he said.

In July, four male lions escaped from the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga Province. They were later spotted at a private farm near the park. (NAN)

Health › The Medical Reason Why You Should Never Fall Asleep Before Your Plane Takes Off by Aldebaran(op):

When a plane ascends into the air or descends into its destination, the air pressure in the cabin changes rapidly with the altitude

It might be tempting to try and get as much shut eye as you can on flight but snoozing through take-off and landing could actually be bad for your health.

When a plane ascends into the air or descends into its destination, the air pressure in the cabin changes rapidly with the altitude.

If you’re not properly prepared to acclimatise it can wreak havoc on your eardrums - causing lasting damage.

As British pharmacist Angela Chalmers explained to Express: “A quick change in altitude affects the air pressure in the ear.

"This leads to a vacuum in the Eustachian tubes which makes the ears feel blocked and sound dull.

“Try not to sleep during takeoff and descent as you will not be swallowing as frequently and this can lead to blocked ears.”

According to MedlinePlus, a health information site by the US National Library of Medicine, if your ears stay blocked, it can create a number of health issues.

These include dizziness, ear infections, eardrum damage, and even nosebleeds and hearing loss.

By staying awake during take-off and landing, passengers can pop their ears helps to equalise the air pressure on the ear drums.

According to Medline Plus: “Swallowing or yawning opens the Eustachian tube and allows air to flow into or out of the middle ear, which helps to equalise pressure on either side of the ear drum.

“If the Eustachian tube is blocked, the air pressure in the middle ear is different than the pressure on the outside of the eardrum.”

7. Stem cell isolation - Ann Tsukamoto

Her patent was awarded in 1991 and since then Tsukamoto's work has led to great advancements in understanding the blood systems of cancer patients, which could lead to a cure for the disease.

Tsukamoto is currently conducting further research into stem cell growth and is the co-patentee on more than seven other inventions.

8. Kevlar - Stephanie Kwolek

This chemist invented the lightweight fibre used in bullet-proof vests and body armour.

Since her discovery in 1965, the material, which is five times stronger than steel, has saved lives and is used by millions every day.

It's found in products ranging from household gloves and mobiles phones to aeroplanes and suspension bridges.

9. Monopoly - Elizabeth Magie

A man named Charles Darrow is often credited with creating the most popular board game in history, but the rules were in fact invented by Elizabeth Magie.

Magie wanted to demonstrate the problems with capitalism with an innovative game in which players traded fake money and property.

Her design, which she patented in 1904, was called The Landlord's Game.

The game of Monopoly that we know today was published in 1935 by the Parker Brothers, who discovered that Darrow was not the sole creator and had, for just $500 (£385), bought Magie's patent and, well, monopolised the game

4. Space station batteries - Olga D Gonzalez-Sanabria

It might not have the catchiest name on this list, but the long cycle-life nickel-hydrogen battery has helped power the International Space Station, so it's pretty important.

Olga D Gonzalez-Sanabria, who is originally from Puerto Rico, developed technology which helped create these batteries in the 1980s and is now director of engineering at Nasa's Glenn Research Centre.

5. Dishwasher - Josephine Cochrane

A frequent entertainer, Cochrane wanted a machine that would wash her dishes faster than her servants, and be less likely to break them.

Her machine, which involved a motor turning a wheel inside a copper boiler, was the first automatic dishwasher to use water pressure.

Cochrane's alcoholic husband had left her with masses of debt after his death and this motivated her to patent her invention in 1886 and open her own production factory.
6. Home security system - Marie Van Brittan Brown

A nurse, who was often home alone, Marie Van Brittan Brown came up with an idea that would make her feel safer.

Together with her husband Albert, Van Brittan Brown developed the first home security system in response to the rising crime rates and slow police responses of the 1960s.

The device was complicated, with a camera powered by a motor which moved up and down the door to look through a peephole.

A monitor in her bedroom also came equipped with an alarm button.

Asked to name important inventors and you might start with Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell or Leonardo da Vinci.
But what about Mary Anderson? Or Ann Tsukamoto?
You might not know their names, but they are just two of the female inventors behind everyday objects and scientific innovations.

Here are 9 inventions we wouldn't have, if it weren't for ground-breaking women.

1. Computer software - Grace Hopper

After joining the US Navy during the Second World War, Rear Admiral Grace Hopper was assigned to work on a new computer, called the Mark 1.

It wasn't long before she was at the forefront of computer programming in the 1950s.

She was behind the compiler, which could translate instructions into code that computers can read, making programming quicker and ultimately revolutionising how computers worked.

Hopper also helped popularised the term "de-bugging" that we still use on computers programmes today, after a moth was removed from inside her machine.

"Amazing Grace", as she was known, continued working with computers until she retired from the navy as its oldest serving officer, aged 79.

2. Caller ID and call waiting - Dr Shirley Ann Jackson

Dr Shirley Ann Jackson is an American theoretical physicist, whose research from the 1970s is responsible for caller ID and call waiting.

Her breakthroughs in telecommunications have also enabled others to invent the portable fax, fibre optic cables and solar cells.

She is the first African-American woman to gain a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the first African-American woman to lead a top-ranked research university.

3. Windscreen wiper - Mary Anderson

On a winter's day of 1903, Mary Anderson was visiting New York City when she noticed that her driver was forced to open his window, just to the clear the snow from his windscreen.

Every time the window was open, the passengers in the car got colder.

Anderson started drawing her solution of a rubber blade that could be moved from inside the car, and in 1903 was awarded a patent for her device.

But the invention proved unsuccessful with car companies, who believed it would distract drivers.

Anderson never profited from her invention, even when the wipers later became standard on cars.

The stadium wants to be 'the finest sports and entertainment facility in the world'.

'We are changing the game for everyone,' shouts its promotional literature. The evidence is widely available to support the claims.

The Falcons have played an exhibition match against Jacksonville at their new base and their first regular-season game there is on September 18 against the Green Bay Packers.

Video screens are everywhere - during NFL games they will show RedZone action (the league's highlights-as-they-happen service) - and seats have been widened by two inches to give more comfort to fans.

Queues for drinks shouldn't be long, with 1,264 beer taps serving 40 different brews at $5 a pop - almost 50 per cent cheaper than the league average - from 673 outlets and 24 bars or restaurants.

In fact, the stadium management claim on their website that fans will 'never have to wait in line for another round of Coca-Cola'.

With that in mind, it's just as well that constructors have added 22 per cent more toilet facilities for men and 30 per cent for women, when compared to the existing Georgia Dome.

It's an impressive feat of engineering and construction, made possible by 27,000 tons of steel and 150,000 cubic feet of concrete.

But there's something in it for friends of the environment, too.

The Mercedes-Benz will gather rainwater for reuse in its 600,000-gallon cistern, while 4,000 solar panels will generate electricity.

The venue has been eagerly awaited over its 39-month construction period, with sports lovers in Atlanta seeing its development first-hand given the new stadium has been built slap bang alongside the Georgia Dome, but it remains to be seen whether the city's MLS team can pack it out.

It's an arena like no other; a $1.5billion, multi-purpose, state-of-the-art venue complete with a roof that opens and closes like a flower in bloom, blending 21st-century technology with Roman architecture.

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is a thing of monstrous beauty and extraordinary design - an LED-clad coliseum that will house 71,000 fans of both the city's MLS and NFL franchises.

On Sunday, soccer will be the order of the day as Atlanta United play their first match inside the their new home.
