The influx of commercial motorcycle riders into Edo State is fast increasing on daily basis across the state.

The okada riders as fondly called who were displaced from plying their trade in some parts of Delta State, especially Warri and Asaba were now having solace in neighbouring Edo State to source for their daily bread.

Community News’ visit to various okada parks across the metropolis gathered that since the Delta State governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan had placed an outright ban on okada riders in some choice parts of the state, all they could do was to find another state that has no such law banning them from performing their daily duties.

In a separate chat with some of the okada riders who volunteered to speak, at the Idogbo in Ikpoba Okha Local Government, Area of the State, Community News gathered that they have no where to run to after they werebanned from operating in Warri, their former base, all they could do to ride their motorcycle and take succour in the area.

Also, at the Aduwawa and Eyan areas respectively, some of them claimed to have come from Asaba after being chased out by the governor from operating in the city.

They added that efforts to settle in some parts of the state like, Isele Ukwu, Agbor, Umunede and other areas yielded no positive results as they said that the people there were hostile to them due to the increasing rate of crime in the area.

However, one of the leaders in Aduwawa who spoke with Community News stated that they decided to allow the new entrants to operate as long as they did not constitute nuisance or commit crime within their operating areas, adding that adequate monitoring were being conducted on their activities on daily basis.

In another area, they were said to have beenbanned from operating until they could secure a guarantor who will stand for them in case of any atrocities before being allowed and that such measures were being taken to check their excesses.

afam4eva: Are you implying that riding an okada is an illegal way of making money? What crime are they committing by offering a service to people?

afam4eva: How come i didn't see this. I think this is an insult of people's source of livelihood. If anything, the ban of okada is a lazy way of bringing sanity to Lagos.

afam4eva: Yes, there are other means of livelihood. That's why the unemployment rate of Nigeria is over 60%. Talk is really cheap but in reality things don't seem rosy like you people paint them to be.

babapupa: Okada was restricted in certain areas, not banned ad was done in other states.

This is not about anybody's ivelihood, this is about public safety and law and order. Your livelihood doesn't equal anybody's life and safety. Sanctity of and protection of human life comes before money and only irresponsible leaders puts such considerations before law and order and safety.

Okada is not the only occupation available, there are other jobs out there and the state offered to retrain them free of charge with business funds.

They can go into armed robbery, but that's what we have police for. They either get killed or locked up so that's a mute argument.

afam4eva: If it just stops at naming other sources of livelihood then most Nigerians would be millionaires by now. Do you know how these people suffered to even buy their okadas which were mostly destroyed by the Fashola regime. Do you just change work without capital? How about the Lagos state government providing these okada riders with loans so that they can use it to start new businesses.

afam4eva: have the numbers of BRT, Danfos and keke Napep increased tremendously such that it will assuage the pains of the average Lagosian? Haven't you noticed the high population of people in bus stops?

I also want lagos to advance but i can't remember when banning okadas became of of the pointers of a developing city. What is development when it's not directed at the people.

Okada is not the only source of livelihood. Armed robbery is there too. So, when one door is closed another is opened.

afam4eva: The bolded is just a proof that the government have failed in implementing traffic rules, so the best thing for them to do is to make the job easy for them by banning okadas altogether. How about the government rising up to the occasion and performing their duty with more dedication and a strong aversion to recklessness by okada riders. They shouldn't take the short way out. The high rate of okada accidents is mainly due to the way they are driven and not because they're okadas.

Btw, it's not like i'm against the ban of okada but as i keep saying, an alternative mode of transportation could have been profered for Lagosians which could in turn be the new source of livelihood of these okada riders.

afam4eva: Do you know how many people that have died via car accidents? Should cars be banned too? Should planes and boats also be banned? Of course the fastest way to solve an issue is to ban it outrightly especially when it's the poor that use it more often. How about putting in measures that will reduce okada accidents. I guess the government is too lazy for that.

Buchika: for your information its only in the city centers of the state capitals of the south east that okada is banned and never the entire state as implied by one comment, banning is one thing and achieving the aim its was banned in the first place is another thing, okada business did not evolve over night and stopping it over night won't solve any problem but add to the existing one. All the places in the south east where okada was banned is still battling with kidnap and armed robbery case. If we can tell ourselves the truth okada business is a child of circumstance begotten by the failures of our successive governments. Singling out the okada riders as our sole traffic and robbery problem is nothing but hypocrisy of the highest order.
