Ochereome Nnanna, the Nigerian columnist who slandered the Yoruba on Facebook last Friday, has vowed to stay on as the chairman of Vanguard’s editorial board, amidst calls for his ouster.

“I do not see why I should resign because I did not have Vanguard’s mandate to do what I did,” Mr Nnanna told PREMIUM TIMES by telephone Sunday night. “It was my personal opinion. Why should I resign? For what?”

Mr Nnanna said those demanding his resignation are pro-government elements who are desperate to get back at him for using his column to amplify scathing reviews of controversial policies of the Buhari administration.

“Let them start to run the country very well and make Nigeria start to see the dividends of good governance,” Mr Nnanna said. “I will commend them.”

PREMIUM TIMES reported how Mr Nnanna on Friday slandered the Yoruba ethnic group as “sophisticated morons” in a Facebook thread over the award of Nigeria’s highest honour to Moshood Abiola.

He apologised for the comments on Sunday morning, but demands intensified for him to step down after what appeared to be a pattern of prejudicial epithets gained broader circulation online.

Those concerned about his continued stay as Vanguard’s editorial board lead made a composite compilation of some of his controversial posts in recent months.

In one of such, Mr Nnanna called Femi Gbajabiamila, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, a “moral slowpoke” while reacting to news reports that the top lawmaker purchased an exotic vehicle for his wife.

Wale Adedayo, a journalist and public affairs commentator, said the Vanguard risks harsh consequences if the paper fails to relieve Mr Nnanna of his post by Wednesday.

“If by then, Vanguard continues to keep him as one of them, it is a definite stance that the newspaper support his bigotry,” Mr Adedayo said in a Facebook update Sunday afternoon. “We’ll be left with no option than to initiate a campaign to boycott Vanguard newspaper across every part of Yorubaland and beyond.”

Mr Adedayo said there could be a potential backlash against Yoruba interests across the South-east, but said that would “be part of their sacrifice to stop the persistent preaching of hatred against our accommodating position in this part of Nigeria.”

Mr Nnanna said his critics are out to smear him over an isolated transgression for which he had apologised, saying those whose opinions count to him have already accepted his remorse and moved on.

“I have already apologised,” he said. “People who really mean well have accepted my apologies and have been calling to check after me.”

“People will say all sort of things, if you pay attention to what people say, you would not be able to move forward in life,” he added. “I know that majority of Nigerians are very, very discerning. I don’t think it is as bad as that in their mind.”

The columnist said he had received unwavering moral support from his Yoruba colleagues who know him in person and could attest to his long-standing principle of inclusiveness and tolerance.

“Most of my colleagues in the industry who are Yoruba are fighting my battle for me because they know me very well,” he said. “That is what defines me.”

“I am a patriot. I love this country. What I do not like is the way the country is being run, it is wrong. If they start doing well tomorrow, I will be the first to commend.



“What you write on a daily basis, there are people who do not like it. Some of them have been meeting , They hide somewhere to try and smear you, but God is more than them,” he said.

Mr Nnanna said he has been a columnist for over two decades, and Vanguard is one of Nigeria’s largest dailies.

The paper had distanced itself from Mr Nnanna and said he would be investigated, the outcome of which Mr Adedayo and many others are anxiously anticipating..

“While we are carefully interrogating the circumstance that led to that comment, with a decisive response to the author, we wish to acknowledge that the statement was made entirely as part of a private conversation,” the Vanguard said in a statement Saturday. “Vanguard dissociates itself totally from such unwarranted but careless, private outburst.”

The paper said Mr Nnanna’s outburst contravened its institutional values, adding that an investigation would be conducted and a “decisive response” would be meted out to the columnist.

Although Mr Nnanna insisted to PREMIUM TIMES that the fallout was not sufficient for his resignation, he expressed maximum deference to his newspaper’s management and said he would respect the outcome of its investigation.

“Honoring June 12 is appreciated but exploiting Abiola’s name for 2019 election will splash oil on the pearl.

“Some of those invited and honored by the villa in the name Abiola or June 12 were people who betrayed Abiola and abandoned the struggle even when chief MKO was alive, others even disowned, condemned and denied him in his hours of need. There are judases of June 12 now honoured in the name of Abiola.

“The greatest honour the government can do to the spirit of June 12 is to habitually respect the rights of Nigerians to differ and to dissent without persecution, obey court orders and prosecute the war against corruption without discrimination.

“Honoring democracy heroes will make no meaning if we don’t live up to the principles and noble ideals they were identified with and upon which they lived and sacrificed their lives for.

“Honoring Chief MKO Abiola and the June 12 struggle shouldn’t be the only reason the south west or any other part of Nigeria should re elect the Present Government; the government must strive hard to end the mindless bloodshed and violence in the country and must respect the rule of law and rid itself of budding autocratic tendencies.

“There is the need for the National Democratic Coallition, NADECO, to reconvene immediately to guide the President and the Parliament on how best to honour the June 12 struggle, to avoid the coronation of traitors along with heroes.”

It also posthumously awarded the highest honour of the land, GCFR, to late Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12th 1993 presidential election. His running mate as Vice President, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, is also to be invested with a GCON. Furthermore, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN, the indefatigable promoter of human rights and the man who fought relentlessly for the actualization of the June 12th elections and indeed for democracy in general, is to be awarded the GCON.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) received this great news with great joy. We are overwhelmed with emotions. This is the boldest step ever taken by any civilian administration since 1999. We commend President Muhammadu Buhari for identifying with democratic and progressive elements in this country. The recognition of June 12 is another strong evidence of ‘change’. It further cements Buhari’s forthrightness, courage, love of justice and flair for fairplay.

June 12th, 1993 was the day Nigerians in their millions expressed their democratic will in the freest, fairest and most peaceful elections since independence. But greedy, selfish and tyrannical elements in the military annulled that election and held the winner captive and incommunicado for four years (1994 – 1998).

His wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, who was the greatest heroine of Nigeria’s democracy, was killed in the most bizarre manner while the husband was still in detention. Worse still, the military totalitarian dictators made sure that MKO Abiola, the hero of democracy, died in captivity (July 1998). Nothing could have out-Heroded Herod than the brutalization of the Abiola family and the destabilization of the MKO Abiola family business.

MURIC has always held that May 29th which was picked by previous regimes to mark Democracy Day was fraudulent and that June 12 was far more truly symbolic of Democracy in the Nigerian context. To this end, we have issued statements every year since 1999 demanding the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day and condemning the celebration of democracy on May 29. We appreciate the Federal Government for eventually sharing this sentiment. It is, indeed, a great achievement for us.

We doff our hats for the family of the late Chief MKO Abiola especially for their tenacity, doggedness and forbearance in the face of severe trials sequel to the criminal annulment of the results of the June 12, 1993 election and the assassination of MKO. We still grieve over the cruel killing of both MKO and Kudirat, his loving wife. We beseech Allah to forgive the couple, to grant them Al-Jannah and to continue to strengthen their families.

We send special solidarity message to Muhammed Fawehinmi, son of late Gani Fawehinmi and his mother, Mrs. Ganiyat Fawehinmi, who is indubitably a leading Nigerian amazon and the entire Fawehinmi family.

We also congratulate all Nigerians for this landmark decision. In particular, and with the Campaign for Democracy (CD) foremost on our mind, we felicitate with civil society and all human rights activists. In this respect, we single out late Dr. Beko Ransome Kuti, foremost leader of the CD, the tireless lawyer, humanist and human rights activist, Femi Falana SAN and Dr. Sylvester Odion Akhaine, CD’s first secretary general.

This singular action has marked out President Buhari as a true democrat and a champion of liberty. It belies the allegation of dictatorial tendency leveled against Buhari by his critics. Buhari has taken a step in the right direction and his name will be written in letters of gold in the hall of fame. It is most thoughtful and highly visionary. Buhari has delivered a major dividend of democracy. He has also hearkened to the yearnings of the people.

But to whom much is given, much is expected. Having proved level-headed, transparent, accountable, prudent and truly democratic, the present administration deserves the support of all Nigerians. Nay, a second term to enable it cross the ‘t’s and dot the ‘i’s.

This epoch-making decision should placate not only members of the old National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) but also Afenifere, all Egba sons and daughters and the Yoruba as a whole. Contrary to the misleading belief that Yorubas are marginalized, a Northerner, nay, a Fulani president has recognized a Yoruba hero. Not only that, a Yoruba man is the current number two citizen, a Yoruba man holds three powerful ministries: power, works and housing. This is in addition to two other major portfolios, viz, finance and communications held by two other prominent Yoruba citizens. The Yoruba never had it so rosy.

Yet like Oliver Twist, MURIC will ask for more from the father of this great nation, President Muhammadu Buhari. The declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day will definitely heal wounds and we appeal that another giant step should be taken to heal more wounds. We are referring to the case of Ken Saro Wiwa, the environmental activist of the Niger Delta. His case still hurts the Ogoni people in particular and the Niger Delta region in general.

We in MURIC believe that the killing of Ken Saro Wiwa was extra-judicial, unlawful, illegitimate and unconstitutional. Ken was murdered in his prime before his appeal was due. His killing was one of the unwise and unpatriotic actions taken by the military to fuel the hatred of one Nigerian ethnic group for another. We appeal to Mr. President to review his case, grant him presidential pardon, compensate his family adequately and give him a posthumous award of no less a status than the one given Gani Fawehinmi.

On a last note, MURIC affirms that the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day confirms the good intention of this administration. It confirms that this regime is prepared to reward hardwork, honesty and integrity. We therefore ask for prayers in all churches and mosques for Nigeria to overcome all obstacles, for peace to reign in the land, for love to permeate all nooks and cranies of our great country and for divine wisdom and guidance for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK) has reacted to a statement credited to President Buhari in which he said ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo has questions to answer concerning power project.

While speaking to supporters at the Abuja Villa, Buhari said, “You know the rail was killed and one of the former heads of state was bragging that he spent more than 15 billion American dollars on power. Where is the power?” he had asked.

However, Obasanjo has responded stating that the president’s claim is based on ignorance. Below is a statement he released.

It's a sad moment for the family of David Adeyemi Otitoj, who worked with Union bank in in Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti state before his untimely demise. The banker was shot dead by armed robbers during a robbery operation at the bank. In the operation that lasted over one hour, the robbers killed a policeman and also reportedly shot another banker in the arm. .

The deceased whose wife just welcomed a bouncing baby two weeks ago - was buried yesterday amid tears.

According to reports, the robbers stormed the bank which is located close to the Alawe’s Palace on Wednesday, May 16th, at about 2.45 pm and operated unhindered for over an hour. They reportedly blasted the bank’s security door with dynamite before gaining entrance. .

The robbers reportedly stole an unspecified amount of money.
