Foreign AffairsRe: Trump Warns Taiwan Against Declaring Independence, Hours After Summit With China by AlphaTaikun: 12:46am On May 16
God1000:
Donald Trump has cautioned Taiwan against formally declaring independence from China.

"I'm not looking to have somebody go independent," the US president told Fox News on Friday, at the end of his two-day summit with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Trump earlier said he had "made no commitment either way" about the self-governing island - which China claims as part of its territory and has not ruled out taking by force.

The US has long supported Taiwan, including being bound by law to provide it with a means of self-defence, but has frequently had to square this alliance with maintaining a diplomatic relationship with China.

Washington's established position is that it does not support Taiwanese independence, with continued ties with Beijing being contingent on its acceptance that there is only one Chinese government.

Many Taiwanese consider themselves to be part of a separate nation - though most are in favour of maintaining the status quo in which Taiwan neither declares independence from China nor unites with it.

In his interview with Fox News, Trump reiterated that US policy on the matter had not changed.

"You know, we're supposed to travel 9,500 miles (15,289km) to fight a war. I'm not looking for that. I want them to cool down. I want China to cool down."

On the flight back to Washington, the US president had told reporters that he and Xi had spoken "a lot" about the island, but said he had declined to discuss whether the US would defend it.

Xi "feels very strongly" about the island and "doesn't want to see a movement for independence", Trump said.

"The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations," Xi warned during the talks, according to Chinese state media, adding: "If mishandled, the two nations could collide or even come into conflict."

Asked if he foresaw a conflict with China over Taiwan, Trump had said: "No, I don't think so. I think we'll be fine. [Xi] doesn't want to see a war."

China has ramped up military drills around the island in recent years, raising tensions in the region and testing the balance that Washington has struck.

Late last year, the Trump administration announced an $11bn ($8bn) package of weapons to be sold to Taiwan, including advanced rocket launchers and a variety of missiles, which Beijing condemned.

Trump said he would soon decide whether that sale could go ahead, adding that he and Xi had discussed it "in great detail" and that he would speak to Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te first.

"I may do it. I may not do it," he told Fox News.

"We're not looking to have wars, and if you kept it the way it is, I think China's going to be OK with that. But we're not looking to have somebody say, 'Let's go independent because the United States is backing us'."

The US has previously provoked anger from China for seeming to soften its stance on independence.

Its State Department dropped a statement from its website reiterating Washington's opposition to Taiwanese independence in February 2025 - something Beijing said "sends a wrong... signal to separatist forces".

US officials in Taiwan said at the time: "We have long stated that we oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side."

Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said his team had been monitoring the US-China summit, and had maintained good communication with the US and other countries "to ensure the stable deepening of Taiwan-US relations and safeguard Taiwan's interests".

He said Taiwan had always been a "guardian of peace and stability" in the region and accused China of escalating risk with its "aggressive military actions and authoritarian oppression".

CEO RNR Global Emporium, Ambassador Rotimi Ramalan Expands International Partnerships Through China Business Visit

Rotimi Ramalan Strengthens Nigeria–China Fashion and Industrial Partnerships During 18-Day Business Tour

Nigerian fashion entrepreneur and business executive Ambassador Rotimi Ramalan has successfully concluded an 18-day strategic business tour across China focused on expanding international partnerships in fashion, textile manufacturing, industrial technology, and renewable energy collaboration.

The business visit, undertaken in August 2025 under his fashion brand RNR Global Emporium, is being regarded as a major step toward strengthening global relationships capable of supporting the future growth of Nigeria’s fashion and manufacturing industry.

Ambassador Ramalan arrived at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on August 9, 2025, before proceeding to Merlinhod Hotel, where he stayed during part of the international business tour.

During the visit, he explored several of China’s major textile and manufacturing hubs, meeting with leading fabric merchants, production experts, fashion accessory suppliers, and industrial technology manufacturers.

One of the major highlights of the trip was his visit to the renowned Changjiang Fabric Market, where he sourced premium materials including luxury shirt fabrics, 100 percent linen, wool, cashmere, and high-quality suit materials for future fashion productions.

Ambassador Ramalan also toured the famous Guangzhou International Textile City, where he interacted with several manufacturers and suppliers specializing in luxury fashion accessories such as Swarovski buttons, premium garment accessories, and embellishment materials.

According to him, the visit provided an important opportunity to establish direct international relationships capable of improving production quality and expanding global business opportunities for African fashion brands.

As part of the tour, Ambassador Ramalan travelled alongside the Forever Sole African distributor from Nigeria on a two-hour flight to Zhuji, where they visited the manufacturing facility of Forever electric monogram machines.

During the factory tour, the delegation was introduced to over 25 advanced industrial embroidery and monogram machines used in garment customization and mass production.

Discussions during the visit focused heavily on the importance of industrial collaboration between China and Nigeria, technology transfer, and the future of modern garment manufacturing within Africa.

The delegation also visited the famous Sijiqing Silk Market, where they explored the world of premium silk fabrics and discussed future partnership opportunities within the luxury textile sector.

Another significant aspect of the tour was a visit to a high-capacity production warehouse, where Ambassador Ramalan observed advanced automated production systems capable of producing thousands of garments within a short period.

He described the experience as an eye-opening exposure to the future of industrial fashion manufacturing and production efficiency.

Further expanding the scope of the visit, the Nigerian entrepreneur toured the popular Kinbo Fashion Accessories Market, where he examined various fashion accessories including decorative buttons, Swarovski stones, customized clothing labels, luxury brooches, branded hangers, and garment finishing materials.

In addition to fashion and textile engagements, Ambassador Ramalan also held strategic discussions with a Chinese solar manufacturing company concerning the production and installation of solar panels aimed at supporting factory operations and improving energy efficiency for his production facilities and showroom in Nigeria.

Speaking on the significance of the trip, Ambassador Ramalan emphasized the importance of global collaboration, innovation, and industrial partnerships in advancing the Nigerian fashion industry.

“The future of African fashion lies in building strong international relationships, embracing technology, and creating opportunities that will empower the next generation of entrepreneurs and manufacturers,” he said.

Industry observers believe the China business visit reflects the growing ambition of Nigerian entrepreneurs who are increasingly positioning African businesses within the global manufacturing and commercial ecosystem.

Through strategic international networking and industrial partnerships, RNR Global Emporium continues to strengthen its vision of becoming a globally recognized brand in fashion, luxury fabrics, and innovative manufacturing solutions.

PoliticsRe: Amaechi Once Threatened To Leave Because ADC ‘Pampered’ Obi - Bolaji Abdullahi by AlphaTaikun: 12:06am On May 16
SlavaUkraini:
Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, once threatened to quit the party over what he described as the “pampering” of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

Abdullahi spoke during an interview with Symfoni TV via YouTube on Thursday.

The ADC spokesperson was reacting to Obi’s claim that “internal battles, endless court cases and uncertainties over the party’s future” informed his decision to leave the party on May 3 for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-governor of Kano.

Abdullahi said Obi lacks the moral standing to make such a claim against the ADC, noting that he enjoyed more privileges than any other opposition coalition leader during his time in the party.

He added that the preferential treatment accorded Obi once prompted Amaechi to complain to David Mark, the ADC national chairman, accusing the party leadership of making too many concessions to the former governor of Anambra.

“There was a time Amaechi went to ADC national chairman David Mark and was threatening to leave the party because the ADC was pampering Peter Obi and that he was conceding everything to Obi,” Abdullahi said.

“I had two deputies under me, and one was nominated by Peter Obi. Amaechi and Atiku can’t point at anybody they nominated in the NWC. The national organising secretary was a Peter Obi man.

“Before Obi joined the coalition, we had other people like Osita Chidoka working hard for the coalition building.

“He was hoping to be the national organising secretary, but when Obi came, and in order to give him a sense of belonging, we gave that position to Obi to nominate someone.

“And there are several other people holding party positions that he nominated. That was how we lost Osita.”

Abdullahi said the ADC leadership deliberately made concessions to Obi, believing that inclusiveness was necessary for coalition politics.

Many questioned why we gave Obi such privileges, but it’s because we recognised that politics is a game of additions, and if we have to make some concessions that are not going to kill anybody, then we have to make them,” he said.

“So, if anybody should be complaining of a toxic environment or marginalisation within the party, I don’t think it should be Obi.”

He further dismissed claims that the ADC is being controlled by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

“Obi and Kwankwaso probably yielded to the propaganda that ADC is an Atiku party. That is simply not true,” he said.

Abdullahi also criticised the current administration, accusing governors of “criminal diversion” of federal allocation funds for President Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

“Governors are diverting funds from the federation account for a presidential campaign. That is a shameless and criminal act,” he said.

He further criticised the judiciary, alleging that some government agents had compromised public trust in the institution.

“Some government agents have turned the judiciary into a disgrace. The people no longer trust it — they see it as an extension of the federal government,” he said.

PoliticsRe: Kwankwaso Has Phd, But Nigeria Needs Wealth Creator Like Me – Obi by AlphaTaikun: 11:59pm On May 15
blamingthedevil:
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said that what Nigeria needs today is a wealth creator and manager like himself.

Mr Obi told MD/CEO of News Central Kayode Akintemi on the programme ‘60 Minutes with Kay’ aired on Thursday that no presidential aspirant, including President Bola Tinubu, can match his experience as a wealth creator.

He stated this in reaction to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, who said at Chatham House in London in 2023 that he had a PhD and was more qualified to be president than be Obi’s running mate. Kwankwaso was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at the time.

Both men have now joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with Kwankwaso likely to become Obi’s running mate in 2027 after the party zoned the presidential ticket to the southern region where Obi comes from.

“Qualification is a perspective and it depends on where you’re coming from. He (Kwankwaso) said he was more qualified because he has a PhD which is not bad. I don’t have a PhD,” Obi said.

“He has some experience, he’s exposed. He was a minister. There’s no doubt about that. I don’t think his claim was wrong but for what Nigeria needs today, Nigeria needs a wealth creator, wealth manager.

“I have built reputable businesses from scratch locally and internationally. Nobody today in this context, including the president, can claim to have passed through my experience.”

Obi said in reaction to being tagged a “common trader” that trading and making money from it is one of the most difficult things to do else everyone would be a trader.

“What Nigeria needs today is somebody that creates wealth, not somebody who shares wealth, somebody who can manage resources more efficiently and save for the future,” he said.

Indonesia has started receiving crude oil shipments from Nigeria as part of efforts to diversify its import sources and reduce reliance on West Asian supplies amid growing concerns over a global supply crisis.

The supply from Nigeria is already underway, and shipments are arriving, said Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Oil and Gas director general, Laode Sulaeman.

According to Antara news agency on Wednesday, he said Russia, the United States and Nigeria were currently among Indonesia’s main alternative crude oil sources due to their large supply volumes.

He also assured that Indonesia’s domestic energy reserves, including crude oil, fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), remained secure.

Indonesia imported about 20% of its crude oil from West Asia before conflicts in the region escalated.

In April, following talks with Moscow, Indonesia secured a commitment for the supply of 150 million barrels of crude oil from Russia, with deliveries scheduled in stages until the end of 2026.

Sulaeman noted that Indonesia has been prioritising crude oil from areas with shipping routes that bypass the Strait of Hormuz.

On Monday, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said that Indonesia is set to begin importing Russian crude within weeks.

‘I’m sorry, my daddy’ – Desmond Elliot apologises to Gbajabiamila

Lagos lawmaker Desmond Elliot has publicly apologised to his political mentor and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, saying he may have offended him during the course of his political engagements.

Elliot made the apology during an appearance on TVC’s “Your View” programme on Friday, where he stated that any misunderstanding between them was unintentional and reaffirmed his commitment to party unity and development in his constituency.

The apology follows earlier political tensions connected to the Lagos State House of Assembly leadership crisis, during which Gbajabiamila disclosed that he nearly lost his position at the Presidency over allegations linked to Elliot’s political activities.

Gbajabiamila had claimed that President Bola Tinubu confronted him over intelligence reports suggesting Elliot’s involvement in moves to impeach Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, an allegation he denied at the time.

Speaking during the programme, Elliot said he entered politics under the guidance of Gbajabiamila, whom he described as his “egbon,” noting that emotions and misunderstandings may have contributed to their differences.

“I’m not saying, oh, yes, media will come out, oh yes, Desmond begs again. Yes, because he’s my egbon. And I grew up learning everything I knew in politics through him,” he said.

He added that mistakes were inevitable in political relationships.

“To err is human, to forgive is divine. So I’m sorry, my daddy, if I’ve offended you in any way,” he said.

Elliot also apologised to whom he described as the “matriarch of Surulere,” expressing regret over any offence caused.

“To the matriarch of Surulere, mama, I’m sorry if I’ve offended you,” he said.

Despite the apology, the lawmaker maintained that he remained focused on strengthening the party and delivering on his mandate to constituents.

“But I will keep keeping the party strong. And to all Surulerians, my scorecard is there. You know the things I’ve done to make Surulere a better place,” he added.

BusinessRe: Experts Say Nigeria’s Next Billion Dollar Revolution May Come From Healthcare by AlphaTaikun: 10:43pm On May 15
Dpharmacist:
Experts Says Nigeria’s Next Billion Dollar Revolution May Come From Healthcare

For more than a decade, fintech transformed Nigeria’s banking sector from frustrating queues, endless paperwork and delayed transactions into instant transfers, digital wallets and mobile banking convenience.

Now, analysts believe healthcare may be next.

According to growing conversations within Nigeria’s healthtech ecosystem, the country’s healthcare sector today resembles banking before the fintech boom around 2012, filled with inefficiency, fragmented systems and massive untapped demand waiting for disruption.

A recent analysis by Nigerian product professional Dolapo R. Fasakin argues that healthcare in Nigeria is quietly entering its own “fintech moment” and most Nigerians are not paying attention yet.

The comparison is striking.

Millions of Nigerians still struggle with poor access to healthcare, scattered patient records, expensive out of pocket medical bills and outdated hospital systems. In many cases, patients move from one hospital to another carrying paper files while paying huge costs directly from their pockets during emergencies.

But beneath these long standing problems, a silent digital revolution is already happening.

The First Wave
The first wave of Nigeria’s healthcare technology movement focused mainly on infrastructure and government ICT development between the 1980s and 2015.

The Second Wave
After the first wave came a second wave between 2016 and 2022, where startups introduced telemedicine, online pharmacies, diagnostics platforms and digital HMOs, especially during the COVID 19 pandemic.

However, many of those platforms mostly served urban smartphone users, while rural and lower income Nigerians remained excluded. Investor enthusiasm also slowed after the pandemic funding surge cooled down globally.

The Third Wave
Now, experts say a third wave is emerging and this one may change everything.

The new focus is shifting toward AI driven healthcare intelligence, health financing, digital pharmacies, patient owned medical records, predictive healthcare systems, medicine logistics and preventive care.

One major opportunity lies in health financing. Although Nigeria’s National Health Insurance Authority Act technically supports wider insurance coverage, millions of Nigerians still rely heavily on direct cash payments for healthcare.

This gap is creating opportunities for startups to build flexible systems that fit how ordinary Nigerians actually earn and spend money.

Perhaps the most surprising argument is that the people likely to transform Nigerian healthcare may not even be doctors.

Instead, they may be engineers, pharmacists, product designers, fintech founders and data scientists building systems around real Nigerian realities.

And just like fintech transformed banking years ago, whoever solves healthcare access, trust and affordability at scale could define the next generation of African billion dollar companies.

AgricultureRe: How To Grow Peppers From Seeds by AlphaTaikun: 10:17am On May 15
jurgyvideos:
According to a lot of experience gardeners, growing peppers from seeds is simple if you actually give them warmth, light, and consistent care. Actually the process is almost the same whether you want sweet bell peppers or hot chili peppers,

What You will Need To Get Started
· You need pepper seeds

· You need seed trays or small pots

· You need seed-starting soil mix

· You need water spray bottle or watering can

· You need plastic cover or humidity dome

· You need grow light or sunny window

· You also need larger pots or garden space for transplanting

Step 1: Start By Choosing Quality Pepper Seeds
You can pick fresh seeds from healthy peppers or purchase seeds from a trusted source. According to most experience gardener’s Hot peppers and bell peppers both grow well from seed.

The popular pepper types are:

· Jalapeños

· Cayenne peppers

· Habaneros

· Scotch bonnet peppers

· Bell peppers

Step 2: Start The Pepper Seeds Indoors
Pepper seeds actually grow best when started indoors eight to ten weeks before warm outdoor weather arrives.

How to Easily Plant the Pepper Seeds
1. You need fill the seed trays with moist seed-starting mix.

2. Plant the pepper seeds about ¼ inch deep.

3. Make sure you cover lightly with soil.

4. Then Mist with water.

5. Then cover the tray with plastic or a humidity dome.

Make sure you keep the soil warm because peppers germinate best between:

25 c to 30 c

Seeds usually sprout in seven to twenty-one days although it depends on the pepper variety.

Step 3: Give The Pepper Seedlings Plenty of Light
Once sprouts Emerge:

· You can easily remove the plastic cover.

· The place the seedlings under a grow light for twelve to sixteen hours daily.

· You can keep the lights a few inches above the pepper plants.

· Make sure you water when the top soil feels dry.

Without enough light the plant seedlings will become weak and leggy.

Step 4: Transplant the Pepper seedlings Into Bigger Pots
When seedlings grow two to three sets of true leaves:

Lagos is daring to dream big. What you’re seeing here is the ongoing construction of Phase 2 of the Lagos Blue Line mass transit rail project. Following the successful launch and operation of Phase 1 running from Mile 2 to Marina for over two years work on the next phase is advancing rapidly.

And this is just one section of the rail corridor currently taking shape. Step by step, Lagos is expanding a modern urban rail system designed to transform mobility for millions across the city.

The Lagos Blue Line Phase 2 is rising fast

From Okokomaiko to LASU, Volkswagen, Trade Fair, Alakija, Festac, and down to Mile 2 visible progress is now unfolding across the entire 14km corridor.

From elevated rail sections to roadbed construction, work is actively ongoing across multiple stations and segments as Lagos continues expanding its metro rail network.

Train station structures are steadily rising along the Lagos Blue Line Phase 2 corridor as work continues toward expanding the metro rail network from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. Another visible step toward a more connected Lagos.

Construction on the Maza Maza Bridge for the ongoing Lagos Blue Line Metro Rail Phase 2.

This is part of the broader effort to complete the full 14 kilometre metro rail corridor stretching from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, with multiple train stations.

Impressive.
PoliticsRe: Gbajabiamila: Tinubu Almost Fired Me Because Of Desmond Elliot by AlphaTaikun:
Islie:
Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has opened up on the reason he fell out with Desmond Elliot, lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The issue between the duo had been discussed in political circles, however, became public after Elliot declared his interest for a fourth term.

Asked if there was any rift with Gbajabiamila, his strong supporter, the lawmaker said, “Our leader is a compassionate leader. A leader of thought. We are children. Children sometimes err. If I have erred in any way, my leader, I am sorry. Give me another chance, and let’s move on, and let’s bring more dividends of democracy to the people. Although he has not said that I have erred, I’m just saying that if I have, then this is the situation.”

But speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, on Thursday, Gbajabiamila traced the issue with the actor turned politician to the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly.

Majority lawmakers in the assembly had removed Obasa, longest serving speaker in the assembly, accusing him of high handedness, among other infractions.

But following high-powered intervention, Obasa got back his position and is currently on his way to the National Assembly.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Lagos, on Thursday, the President’s Chief of Staff said Tinubu summoned him over the involvement of Elliot in the assembly crisis.

“I almost lost my job because of Desmond Elliot last year. You can go and verify. The President invited him to his residence in Abuja during the Obasa saga and confronted me over reports linking Elliot to the crisis.

“Mr President called me to his study in Abuja and said, ‘I hear this Desmond is your boy.’ I said, ‘Yes, sir.’ He then said Desmond was among those causing problems in the Lagos State House of Assembly,” he stated.

Gbajabiamila said he defended the lawmaker without knowing that Elliot was involved in the plot.

“I told the President that Desmond was not part of them, but the President insisted and told me to call him to order,” he added.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives further disclosed that shortly after the meeting, he contacted Elliot and warned him to steer clear of the crisis.

“Three days later, the Director-General called me and said there was a serious issue, that my name was everywhere as the person supporting Desmond to push for impeachment,” he said.

Gbajabiamila said after this, he reached out to Elliot again, asking him, this time around, to issue a public statement, distancing himself from the plot.

The Chief of Staff said the lawmaker failed to do so.

“If not for the kind of relationship I have with the President today, I probably would not still be here as Chief of Staff,” Gbajabiamila said.

Accusing Elliot of attempting to whip up religious sentiment, Gbajabiamila told the party faithful that political office holders related freely regardless of religious background.

He narrated how the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) wrote him a letter to make a case for Elliot.

The President’s Chief of Staff said religious sentiment has no place in the constituency as people work together harmoniously.

My take is that 'Femi Gbajabiamila shouldn't have disclosed this sensitive information in the public domain. As a Chief-of-Staff to the President, that recording shouldn't have leaked.

For those who don't know about the history of Lagos State, Desmond Olusola Elliot and 'Femi Gbaja are paternally both indigenes of Olowogbowo in Lagos Island, Lagos State and things should have been kept under wraps by discussing in private.

However from the complaints I heard from several Surulere folks in the last 3 months, Desmond was accused of NOT doing enough for areas in Surulere. Desmond Olusola Elliot can still be useful to mankind in other ways and NOT bother too much if he doesn't make it back. "Every failure and setback in life has seeds of an equal opportunity." Period.

Very dumb thing to say. If that is what Rich people do, they would not excel. How many years before even TESLA became profitable?

Is US not borrowing and in debt? How can you expand economy if you are stuck in paying debts and not expanding. All the debts we are taking in will multiple the economy in folds.

How do you want to invite people to come and see our tourist centers, or move agro produce from North to South without good lasting highways.
What should be the focus is what the Govt is doing with the money and the plans to repay.

Obasanjo was there for 8yrs...please what are his lasting legacies? If he has done half of what Tinubu is doing, we would not be where we are but they spend $16 billion on Electricity Failure.

I have debt. I am not paying it off. I am instead investing. In 2-3 years, I will use the revenue from investments to pay off debts while still holding on to my investment. Please fact check to see how many countries carry debt? Are they all stupid and Obj is the wise one?
You're the ONLY one who made the MOST sense on this thread so far. I shake my head at the huge number of semi-literate responses on this thread. A large number of those making garrulous comments here are NOT well-informed about global investment dynamics.

How do small, medium to large businesses or any country's economy grow if they don't use loans got at single-digit interest rates? It's impossible to do that optimally with ONLY the export of natural resources from any country. Loans are supposed to be used for growth-based investments NOT for paying salaries or buying consumables that add no value.

Nigerian governments at all levels have to urgently focus on the mass education of a lot of these young people (who have populated the online space with disinformation) and make them realise that borrowing especially at single-digit interest rates for medium to long-term projects isn't a bad thing but a universal practice!
