John Otunba Payne, born 1839, was a notable Nigerian sheriff and colonial administrator in 19th-century Lagos.

He held important registry positions across the Supreme Court of Lagos and various other judicial departments, including the Police Court and Chief Magistrate's Court.

Besides his official roles, he kept detailed diaries, providing valuable insight into Lagos life during that period, he also organized first census in Lagos back in 1881 which was then known as the first official census of Lagos.

Tragically, Payne was killed at his home in Lagos in 1906 by an unidentified attacker, and the mystery surrounding his death remains unsolved.

Indeed... That's the photograph of the legendary, well-educated, Victorian-era icon of Yoruba descent, John Otunba Payne. He died in 1906, long before the Northern Protectorate and Southern Protectorate of Nigeria were merged or amalgamated together in 1914.

This is old news. Folasade Ojo would have learned her lessons by now about reading up on other cultures before taking action. It's clear she was totally ignorant about Benin customs and traditions which share some similarities with Yorubaland BUT also has major differences otherwise she wouldn't have gone ahead to do that so-called installation ceremony of a market woman leader in Benin.

She should sit down in Lagos Island and Lagos State and be their Iyaoloja-General and NOT even extend her Iyaoloja-General to other Yoruba States as each State is distinct in terms of the appointments of Iyaolojas and Babaolojas by any Yoruba Oba. Period.

The BEST way to win in the next Presidential elections cycle convincing would be for the Nigerian President and the Governors to crash the cost of living in terms of food, medicine, transportation and much more for those folks in Nigeria. The use and massive deployment of CNG would radically make people vote for his political party so that he can ensure the completion of his administration's legacy projects such a as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway construction which which is to last for 8 years and more. If a new government replaces him, they will discontinue that construction work just to spite him. Stability in governance is key to sustainable development in any country.

2. We implemented a dark mode for Nairaland with the most intuitive UX: a sun toggle on your upper right.

3. We further relaxed the minimum character rule because many people were still struggling with it.

Look @Seun, while you're doing a good job in tweeking the UX of this discussion forum, you have to get all your "politics section moderators" and majorly the NL super moderators to be more serious, give them a warning and ensure they individually BAN those paid trolls and monikers who deliberately insult and call President Tinubu a drug baron or drug lord. Tinubu was NEVER charged in in the United States I. 1993 as a drug baron BUT only forfeited $460,000 to the U.S. government due to the backlog of unpaid taxes on his bank accounts. It was a civil suit, NOT a criminal suit. The remaining money in his 8 United States bank accounts were returned to him out of the $1.8 million he originally had in those bank accounts. It's a total shameful and annoying that a discussion forum that was founded by a person from the SW of Nigeria has been allowed to be hijacked by well known bigots and monikers with ipob affiliations to openly insult a whole Nigerian President under the nose of your super moderators who repeatedly see these defamatory posts pushed to the Nairaland front page.
