Falana resigns from ThisDay editorial board over ‘fictitious’ report

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), says he has resigned from the editorial board of ThisDay newspaper after the paper published a report he described as “a figment of the imagination of its writers.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria explained in a statement that he took his decision after the paper published “without any factual basis” on April 3 that he influenced the appointment of Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the Chief of Staff to the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Falana said, “As the tendentious publication could not be justified, I was compelled to resign my membership of the editorial board of the newspaper.

“In a desperate bid to blackmail me, the forces of corruption who are using the newspaper to fight back proceeded to allege that Mr. Olukoyede was a lawyer in my office and that I seconded him to the EFCC.

“It was also alleged that the EFCC had given me one of the properties forfeited to the Federal Government by ex-governor DSP Alamieyeseigha.”

He, however, said Olukoyede never worked in his law firm and that he only met him for the first time about two years ago.

“Having not known him or worked with him closely, I could not have recommended him for any position of responsibility either in the EFCC or in other public office,” Falana said.

He also rubbished the claim that the EFCC handed a property to him, saying, “The second allegation is equally a figment of the fecund imagination of the fictitious writers in ThisDay newspaper.”

According to the human rights lawyer, although the address of the property allegedly given to him by the EFCC is not stated, it is public knowledge that all the funds and other assets forfeited by the late governor were handed to the Bayelsa State government sometime in 2010 by the then management of the EFCC.

He added, “Based on my belief in public accountability, I have never said that the properties recovered by the EFCC should not be investigated.”

He called on members of the public to disregard the report “of the reactionary elements who are hell bent on diverting the attention of Nigerians from the mega looting of our commonwealth by a coterie of plutocrats.”

I think his certificate might be authentic. I graduated in the 99 academic year too, but didn't defend my project till january 2000, thanks to the slow academic sessions and countless strikes. I resumed camp in Obubra, Cross-Rivers state in July 2000. I just checked now, and my NYSC certificate reads the same dates with Dino's.

This is not an intelligent thing to say and shows emotions ruled your actions rather than your head (please pardon me) because we know we don't vote parties in Nigeria, buy personalilties.

I was considering voting for Fashola if the APC made him their flag bearer.

I would not have even spent time considering it. I would have without reservation voted for Ibrahim Shekarau, former gov of Kano before Kwankwaso, if he had emerged. But the mistake (leadership-wise) emerged, and I could just not vote for him.

If it is not the individual that matters, ask yourself the question, "What kind of reputation would the federal govt and APC have earned for themselves if it was someone else (for eg Fashola) elected into office in 2015?"

By the way, I am a south-south man. I still have my senses in tact.

If you still think it is about parties, a new party can emerge in 2019, give an evident disaster their ticket, claim they are coming to clear the mess made by the PDP and APC, and you will still stand in the ques for many hours to vote their disaster in.

Going by current happenings around the politics in Nigeria it is glaring to say that APC government have fail us.

We were deceive into believing that they have change to give to the Nigeria but all we see are lies upon lies garnished with selective anti corruption fight targeted at those who they perceive as enemies. The deceit and ineffectual ineptitude is so numerous to mentioned here.

N6billion spent on new Vice President’s residence a waste of resources — VP Osinbajo

There is no need for a new residence for the Vice President as the current one, called Aguda House, is up to standard with enough space and well managed, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said.

The Vice President said this on Friday while responding to questions at the Pastors and Leaders Retreat of the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, Lagos.

Mr. Osinbajo said the N6 billion already spent on the project was a misapplication of fund but added that with the level of construction already done, it would not be abandoned.

He said the present administration would complete it but consider putting it to other use.

“There is no need for a new Vice President’s house; it is a kind of waste; we are now in a situation where we cannot abandon it; it has to be completed and used for a different thing,’’ he said.

Why vice president Osinbajo is living in a rented house

The official residence of the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has been under construction for the past 8 years.

So far, the project has gulped a whopping N6.215billion naira, yet the house remains uncompleted.

The project was abandoned five years ago owing to disagreement between the Senate and the FCT administration.

The contract was awarded in 2009 at a cost of N7billion but N6.215 billion was paid to the contractors.

In 2012, the then Minister of FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed, submitted a request for an additional N9billion.

The 7th Senate rejected it following an intelligence report that “the request for the additional cost was suspicious.”

The complex is made up of the followings: VP’s ADC’s house (N258m); Chief Security Officer’s house (N228m).

Mosque (N95m); Church (N84m); security quarters, (N114 m); boys quarters ( N288m); [color=#FF0000]Gate House (N55m);[/color] infrastructure (N1.7 billion).

While the government was trying to find a solution to the contract stalemate, a fresh row is trailing the new residence.

The Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, Hon. Herman Hembe said his committee was disappointed at the way the contract was being managed.

Hembe said: “In all, about 87% of the contract sum has been paid.

“You can go and take a look and say by yourself if the work done is commensurate with the funds so far paid.

“The committee has severally expressed disappointment over this very sad situation.”

The dog that will get lost will not hear the hunter's whistle. All men of goodwill has advised against this borrowing. The logic is simple. You don't borrow when you are not sure of the capacity to pay back within a specified period. Crude Oil was less than $50 per barrel on the average throughout Obasanjo tenor and he did not borrow a dime but paid all our past debts and also left substantial amount in our foreign reserves. There was also militancy in the Niger Delta during Obasanjo tenor and oil production was also affected but Nigeria do not go into recession. It is clear that what PMB lacks is good economic team and capacity to manage crisis! With the present economic team of PMB, borrowing $30billion will put us and the coming generation on the fast lane to Zimbabwe. The senate and the governors will surely not oppose it for it will translate to having enough to loot.
